Rough Morning

Jack stared at Lee from where he stood with a pitful and saddened look on his face as he felt sorry for him having been put to his position by Lilly. If he was honest with himself, he didn't care whether Lee would fed him or not as he knew little food he had to choose from and how hard of a choice it will be for him. But he hoped that whoever he wanted to feed would be Clementine and Duck, though. He knew kids should always come first when it comes to stuff like this.

He glanced away from Lee, letting out a sigh as he shifted his attention from him to Clementine, Ben and Travis and saw Travis walking away from the former two with an annoyed look on his face. Jack nodded to himself, knowing he should have a conversation with either of the teenagers now to learn more about them. He brought them here in the first place and openly argued with Lilly and Larry about keeping them with them, after all.

"Hey." He called out to Travis upon finding himself close enough to him.

Travis turned towards him with his annoyed expression slightly fading away from his face after seeing Jack standing in front of him. He rubbed the back of his head, "Oh, hey...So, um, thanks for what happened back in the forest. For helping us with Mr. Parker and sticking up for us too..."

"No problem. It was the right thing to do." Jack replied, "How are you doing, by the way? I know all of this must be hard for you."

"I'm okay, I guess." Travis shrugged his shoulders, "Is my teacher gonna make it?"

"I'm not sure." Jack gave him an honest answer, "Katjaa is doing whatever she can."

"Alright. Cool..." Travis said in understanding, "I just hope your friend didn't have to chop his leg off."

"There was no other way. I'm sorry you had to see that." Jack apologized, "So, who are you people? Our group's gonna want to know. My name is Jack, by the way. Jack Weaver."

"I'm Travis Dean." Travis gave him a proper introduction, making a mental note out of Jack's name as he pointed towards Ben who was sitting next to Clementine and watching her and Duck draw something together. What caught his attention was the fact that Clementine was not wearing her hat. It suprised him a bit as it was rare to see her without it, "My friend over there is Ben Paul. We all came down from Stone Mountain for the playoffs, when...when everything happened."

"I see." Jack said in understanding, looking at him with a sympathetic look on his face as he knew how it felt like to be away from home when everything went down, "So. What can you exactly do? Can you shoot a gun or something?"

Travis nodded in confirmation, "Yeah. My dad was in the special forces and he taught me how to shoot."

Jack smiled at him, "Really? That's good. Maybe we could get you on watch or you could go out with the hunting group. Having a sixth member to equal the numbers whenever we split up would be a nice."

"Alright. That sounds cool." Travis replied.

"What about your friend?" Jack wanted to know.

Travis was silent for a moment, looking like he was thinking about his answer before finally giving it to Jack, "...Um, to be honest I'm not sure how Ben is like with the gun."

"I see." Jack said in understanding, "We could always train him if he won't be the best with it. Lilly set up the shooting training with Andre and Carley for all of us back when all of this started. It did wonders on everyone, including Doug, so I'm sure your friend will get the hang of it."

"Alright. Sounds good." Travis replied, "Before he'll get his gun training done, then I guess he could go scavenging a bit."

jack raised his brow at his choice of brow, "You guess?"

Travis rubbed the back of his head, "We really didn't have to scavenge until now. When we were at the gym, we had planety of supplies from the cafeteria food. We don't have any of it left now..."

"Your gym got raided?" Jack asked, "You said something about bandits attacking you camp when you first saw us."

Travis shook his head, bitting his lip a bit, "No. Our gym wasn't raided by them. It happened later. After what remained of us formed a camp outside of it after something happened Let's just say people who ran into us did more than stealing our supplies..."

"I see. I'm sorry." Jack said in understanding, seeing it must have been a sore subject and decided not to push it for the time being. He could try to do it again once Travis will get more comfortable around his group, "I won't push you on this if you don't want to talk about it."

Travis nodded, looking grateful and Jack about Jack not pushing him further on this subject and asked him, "S-So. Does that mean me and my friends can stay here?

"Yeah. I see no problem with it." Jack nodded at him, "I'm sure most of us don't have a problem with it as well."

Travis glanced behind Jack and pointed at Lilly who kept herself on top of the RV, "What about her? And the geezer?"

Jack chuckled a bit at the way Travis called Larry as he reassured him, "You don't need to worry about them. Even if they were against you and your friend staying here, they're still outvoted by the rest of us."

"Alright. Good to know." Travis smiled with relief evident on both his face and in his words, "Listen. You ain't gonna regret having me in your group. I know how to take care of myself and I know how things are like out there. I won't cause you any trouble. I promise"

"We'll see about that." Jack nodded in understanding, smilling at bit as he could see the confidence Travis had in himself and willingness he was showing right now. He knew he had to wait until Travis will prove himself before making any judgement, though. Words and actions were two different things. He looked over his shoulder at Clementine, Duck, Ben and Carley a second later, "How about we'll go sit down for a bit? I feel like both of us could use this after this morning."

"I'll be right behind you, man." Travis replied as Jack turned away from him and pushed himself into walk towards Clementine, Duck, Ben and Carley. He followed him and both of them made their way to them a second later. They sat down on the ground right after, placing themselves between everyone as Jack set his eyes on Carley and noticed they was she was looking at him.

Jack sighed, "Let me guess. It's about the argument earlier?"

"Yes." Carley nodded in confirmation, "We need to talk about you and Larry."

Jack shrugged, "What is there to talk about that won't be what you already know about him and me?"

"Could you stop trying to pick a fight with him so often?" Carley asked, "I know Larry can be annoying at times but your constant arguments aren't helping anyone."

Jack quickly gave her an honest answer, "If he wasn't giving me a reason to argue with him, then trust me, I wouldn't argue with him so often. Just because the geezer..." Travis smiled at the way Jack called Larry, "...thinks he's entitled to something just because Lilly makes a couple of decisions around here doesn't mean jack shit. He keeps complaining about everyone except for his daughter not doing anything for our group and yet I don't see him risking his life by going on the supply runs or going on the hunting trips."

Carley sighed, "I see. Nothing I will say will change your mind?"

"If you will get him to stop being such an asshole towards everyone in this place, then I will stop arguing with him and will even try to get along with him." Jack replied as Carley nodded in understanding, letting out another sigh due to her realizing how hard it will be to get Larry to stop acting like this. Jack shifted his attention away from Carley a second later and set his eyes on Clementine. He raised his brow as he had just noticed he did not have her hat on. It confused him as it was pretty rare to see her without it on.

Just he was about to ask Clementine about her hat, Lee walked over to them and stopped in front of Clementine, "Hey, Clem."

Clementine looked up at him, "Hey, Lee."

Lee pulled out a half of an apple and held it out to Clementine, "Here, Clem. You need something to eat."

"I love apples. Thank you. Are there more?" Clementine asked, looking at the apple she had just received from Lee.

"No. That was the last one." Lee replied.

"Oh, um..." Clementine started, feeling a bit guilty about asking the question.

"Enjoy it. You deserve it." Lee reassured her. As Clementine turned away from him and began to eat her apple, he shifted his look from her to Ben and Travis, wanting to see how the two teenagers were doing right after everything that happened in the forest, "How are you two doing?"

"I'm okay, I guess." Travis shrugged his shoulders.

"I already checked on them, Lee." Jack told Lee as Lee shifted his gaze to him, "They're as fine as you can be after something like this."

"Alright." Lee smiled at Jack gratefully, grateful he was considerate enough to check on the two teenagers as he shifted his gaze to Duck and held out some crackers and cheese to him, "Don't worry, Duck. I didn't forget about you. Here you go."

"Yeah! Oh, man, I'm so hungry!" Duck exclaimed as he eagerly he grabbed the snack from Lee's hand, "Thank you, Lee!"

Lee smiled at Duck's enthusiasm. It mattered not what you threw at him, sooner or later Duck would just shrug it off and be his loveable self again, "How are ya doing, Duck?"

"I'm okay." Duck smiled at him, nodding his head, "Me and Clementine are coloring."

Clementine help up her drawing which presented a cat, "Guess what it is?"

"I don't know...a dog?" Ben guessed.

Clementine shook her head at him, "No."

"I know! It's a goat, right?!" Duck exclaimed.

"No." Clementine once her head once again and looked at Travis, excepting him to voice his guess as well.

"...A horse?" Travis asked, saying the first thing that came to his mind as he wasn't really interested in this guessing game.

"No." Clementine repeated herself for the third time in a frustated tone.

"It's a cat, right?" Jack asked.

Clementine looked at the glasses wearing young man and nodded at her with a cute smile on her face, "Yeah. Exactly!"

Jack smiled and raised his brow at as he shifted his gaze to Travis, "What made you think it was a horse in the first place?"

"I dunno." Travis shrugged in a slight embarassment, "I suppose there's something wrong with me..."

"Glad you finally caught up with everyone." Ben stated as Jack, Lee, Carley and Travis all fell silent for a second. Travis pouted, shaking his head as Lee, Carley and Jack exchanged amused smiles with each other while Clementine and Duck were confused by it. They went back to drawing a second later as Ben look apologetic.

Ben looked at Travis with an apologetic look on his face, "I'm sorry. That just popped out. I only meant it as a joke."

Lee smiled at their interaction as turned away from everyone and walked over to Kenny, wanting to talk with him about his idea of leaving the motor inn and to give him something to eat, "Word's getting out that you wanna leave the Motor-Inn."

"That ain't no secret Lee. It's probably our best bet. I already spoke with Jack about it and he agreed to come with us. I'm certain Andre will be coming with him." Kenny replied, "Look you've been good to me and my family. You saved Duck from those monsters, and ya stood up to Larry at the drug store. I won't forget that. You and Clem are welcome to come with us."

Lee looked at Kenny with a thoughtful look on his face, thinking about this before giving him his answer, "The coast does sound like a smart idea. Maybe that is the best thing."

"I know that it is." Kenny stated, "I'm taking my family."

"Thanks for buying me time to get that guy out of the bear trap back there." Lee said.

"I can't believe you cut off his leg." Kenny shook his head, "I don't know if I coulda done it."

"I didn't have a choice. It was that or the walkers." Lee stated as he held out his hand with a beef jerky, "Here, Ken."

Kenny looked at the jerky, "How about my boy? He eat yet?"

"Yeah." Lee nodded in confirmation, smilling, "I gave him something."

"Then sure, hand it over, I'm starved. Thanks." Kenny smiled back at him gratefully as he took the food from Lee. Lee turned away from him a second later, having just given the last ration he had to Kenny due to him giving the first one to Larry earlier and waled over to Lilly. He looked up at her and gave her a nod, letting her know he just finished handing out the rations and Lilly gave him a sympathetic nod. Even though Lee had given the last ration to Kenny, she wasn't angry about it due to Lee giving the food to her dad earlier.

"It's not so easy, is it?" Lilly asked as Lee nodded in confirmation with a saddened look on his face. He afterwards shifted his gaze to Carley and Jack who quickly noticed him looking at them with the same saddened expression on his face.

"It's okay. I know you're still watching out for us." Carley told him, referring to herself and Doug.

"You fed the kids." Jack added, "That's what matters."

Lee turned to look at Lilly again, "I don't envy you. I don't know how you have the strength to do this every day."

"I don't have a choice." Lilly replied.

Kenny stood up from the couch and walked over to Lee with a smile on his face, "Hey, thanks for looking out for me and my family. I'm serious about that offer to come with us. You've more than earned a ride on the RV with me. Still, I guess some people aren't gonna be happy with your choices."

"I know." Lee sighed sadly as he looked over his shoulder at Mark and saw him shaking his head sadly.

"Ken! Lee! Jack! Come here, please." Katjaa suddenly called out for Kenny, Lee and Jack from where she was working on patching Mr. Parker up. The said three members of the group made their way around the RV and made their way to Katjaa. When the three saw Kat she was no longer working on Mr. Parker, even though she hadn't finished his leg. It didn't take more than three seconds to process why.

"He didn't make it, did he?" Kenny asked in a cold tone.

Katjaa shook her head, "He lost too much blood."

"Goddamn it!" Kenny stormed off, throwing his metal scrap to the ground, "I'm getting sick of this shit!"

Jack sighed, watching Kenny walk away from them, "I'll go talk with him."

"Ken, come back, there's nothing..." Katjaa started to say as Jack followed Kenny.

"Let him go, Katjaa..." Lee and Katjaa's words faded away from Jack's ears as he distanced himself more from them and made his way to Kenny.

Jack got himself in front of Kenny with a concerned look on his face, "What's wrong, Ken?"

"Besides the fact that that man is dead?! Nothing, nothing at all!" Jack's eyes widened a bit at Kenny's outburst as Kenny quickly regained himself from it and looked at him with an apologetic look on his face, "I'm sorry, pal. It's just been a bad day."

"It's alright. I'm just tryin' ta see if there was anything..." Jack was cut off by Katjaa's loud call of distress.

"Shit, Katjaa!" They heard Lee yell as they ran back to the scene. Andre, Larry, Mark and Lilly all turned away from what what they were doing right now and saw Mr. Parker who had turned into a walker trying to bite Katjaa after grabbing her from behind with Lee rushing in her aid and pulling Mr. Parker away from her.

Lee quickly turned towards Mark and held his hand out towards him, "Mark, the Axe! Hurry!"

Just as he uttered those words. Mr. Parker grabbed onto Lee and pulled him into the truckbed. Not wasting any time, Lee began smashing its head against the sides of the vehicle over and over again. Mark ran towards Lee and the walker, a firm grip on the axe as Lee pushed the walker off of him as Mark swung, missing his target as the walker lowered its head. He instead hit the back of the truck, shattering a window and getting the axe wedged between metal.

"Shit! It's stuck!" He shouted as Mr. Parker crawled towards Lee and grabbed a hold of his leg.

"Lee! Push him away!" Andre shouted, having just arrived at the scene with his police baton in ready. Lee did as he was told. He kicked Mr. Parker away from him and Andre wasted no time. The police officer quickly hit the walker in the head with his police baton and Mr. Parker stopped moving after the hit. He hit him a few more times after that to make sure the walker was really dead, killing him once and for all. Upon making sure the walker was dead, he looked down at Lee in worry, "You okay?"

"Yeah. Thanks." Lee nodded, getting himself up on his feet as everyone except for Clem and Duck, who stood out of the way, arrived on the scene while Kenny and comforted Katjaa who was still processing what had happened.

"Why'd you bring him here in the first place?! Asshole!" Larry shouted angrily at Lee.

Lilly ran over to her dad as soon as she arrived at the scene, her rifle in her hand, "Dad, calm down."

"You're gonna get us all killed!" Larry ignored his daughter and proceeded to shout at Lee.

"Oh just shut up, will you?!" Jack couldn't believe Larry would yell at Lee after he was just attacked. Until, of course, he remembered who he was talking to.

"Why didn't you tell us he was bitten?!" Kenny shouted angrily as Travis and Ben walked over to them.

Ben looked at him, "What?"

"He was bitten and you didn't say a god damn word!" Kenny shouted, his afce nearly turning red in anger.

Ben quickly shook his head, denying it, "But he wasn't bitten! I swear!"

Andre crossed his arms with a confused look on his face, "Well then how do you reckon your friend came back from the dead and attacked one of ours!"

"Wait. You don't know?" Travis asked as he looked around himself and saw everyone looking at him and Ben in a confused manner, "It's not the bite that does it! You come back no matter how you die. If you don't destroy the brain, that's just what happens. It's gonna happen to all of us."

"God help us." Lee gasped in shock, shaking his head after allowing himself to process this new information as whatever mood everyone was just in previously was replaced with shock now

"We're all infected." Jack said in realization, shaking his head.

"It makes sense." Mark stated, "In those first few days it spread so fast."

"Car accidents, suicides, everything was making more of them." Andre sighed.

"When we first saw it happen, we were all hiding out in a gym and everybody thought we were finally safe." Ben flinched as he forced himself to remember those memories he wished he could bury away in the distant part of his mind, "But one of the girls, Jenny Pitcher, I think, I guess she couldn't take it. She took some pills. A lot of them. Someone went in the girls' room the next morning, and... God..."

Sorrow filled everyone before the sound of a bell ringing suddenly echoed across the motor inn. Hearing, Andre and Carley quickly ran over to the fence with the guns.

"Doug, it works!" Mark smiled at Doug.

"Of course it works! I told you!" Doug replied happily.

"Shit, where'd this string come from?" A voice from outside said.

"Watch where you're walking, man." Another voice said.

"Back off!" Carley shouted as she and Andre aimed their guns at them. Everyone looked at her and Andre and saw them aiming their guns at the two strangers. Both men stood on the other side of the street. One raised his arms while the other held onto a gas canister.

"Whoa, you two, relax!" The taller from the two said, "Me and my brother, we...we just wanna know if y'all can help us out."

Lilly got herself behind Andre and Carley, "Carley. Andre."

"Are you armed?" Andre asked.

"Yeah. For protection. Dead could be anywhere." The younger looking brother, the shorter one from the two answered

"But, uh, I think you've got the upper hand here." The older brother added.

"Why do you need gas?" Jack wanted to know.

"Our place is protected by an electric fence. Generators provide the electricity." The younger brother explained as Larry's eyes widened at the idea that they were really protected by an electric fence.

"Our generators run on gas." The older sibling finished for his younger sibling with a proud smile on his face, "Look, we own a dairy farm a few miles up the road. If y'all be willing to lower your guns, we can talk about some kinda trade. I'm Andy St. John by the way. This here's my brother Danny."

"Give us a minute to talk about it! Don't try anything." Lilly replied, "Carley, Andre, keep your guns on them."

Andre nodded in understanding, "Got it."

"What are you thinking?" Lee asked.

"We need the food, Lee. I say it's worth the risk." Lilly replied.

Jack looked at Travis and Ben, "Are they the ones who attacked you?"

"No." Travis replied as Ben silently shook his head, "The guy who attacked us had masks on their faces."

"Then, we need a group to go with them and see if it all checks out. See if it's legit." Lilly stated.

"Yeah." Andre nodded as he continued to aim his shotgun and Andy and Danny, "We should check if this place is safe too."

"So, who's going then?" Mark asked as the group exchanged glances, wondering who should go with Andy and Danny to their dair

Lilly looked at everyone gathered around her before turning her gaze to Lee, "Lee, why don't you, Jack, Mark and Ben check the place out, see if it's legit."

"I'm coming with you." Carley told him as she put away her pistol as Ben silently nodded, not protesting being volunteered for the job, "I've got your back if anything seems fishy."

"I'll come as well," Doug added, "I want to check out this fence of theirs."

"I'll come too..." Travis began to walk towards the wall, seeing this as a chance to prove himself.

Lee stopped him, "No. Six is more than enough."

"Lee is right." Lilly nodded in agreement.

"Fine..." Travis sighed, reluctantly agreeing to stay behind as he glanced at Ben, "Stay safe out there, Benji."

"So, what do y'all think?" Andy asked after the group didn't answer to his and his brother's offer.

Lee glanced at Lilly one more time to confirm, when she nodded yes he looked back to the brothers, "You've got a deal. We'll bring some gas to your Dairy. In exchange, you'll give us some food to bring back. We'll see how it goes from there."

"Sounds fair." Andy replied, happy to have some deal so far, "Couple of gallons should power one of our generators for a while."

The small group going to the Dairy opened the gate and walked towards the brothers as Kenny and Larry closed it behind them. Lee, Jack, Mark, Ben, Carley and Doug stopped in front of the two strangers, waiting for them to lead. Andy and Danny nodded at them and turned around, beginning to walk in the direction of the dairy. The group of five followed them, slowly starting to make their way towards their new destination.

-----

The brothers lead Lee, Jack, Mark, Ben, Carley and Doug down a dirt road to their Dairy. It would have been too dangerous to take the main road. Lee, Doug and Carley walked together in the back of the group, keeping their eyes on their surroundings as Jack, Ben and Mark walked closely behind Andy and Danny, answering almost every question the group from the motor inn had for them.

"You know. It won't be my first time visiting a farm during all of this." Jack said as Andy and Danny glanced at him, growing interested by what he just said.

Andy raised his brow, "Really?"

"What was your first visit?" Danny asked.

"It happened in the first days of all this." Jack began to explain, "I stayed for the night at the farm of some guy named Hershel Greene. I don't know if you heard of him..."

Andy smiled a bit, "Hershel Greene. I'll be dammed."

"We haven't heard that name in a long time." Danny added, smilling a bit himself.

Jack raised his brow at their reaction, "You know."

"We met a few times. Our dad was friends with him." Andy nodded in confirmation, "How is he doing right now?"

Jack rubbed the back of his head, "I'm not exactly sure. I was only there for one night and I haven't really knew them before. Maybe you could ask Andre. He knew them long before all of this started and was the one who brought me there in the first place."

"Alrighty. We'll keep that in mind." Andy said in understanding, making a mental note out of it, "How was he doing the last time you saw him, though?"

"Pretty good, I suppose. His son Shawn almost died to the walkers, but we managed to save him in time." Jack continued to rub the back of his head as he recalled what happened with the fence. He looked over his shoulder at Lee, Carley and Doug, "Good thing Lee was there to help. Isn't that right?"

Andy turned to look at Lee as well, "Yeah, why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself, Lee."

"Where are you from?" Danny asked as and Andy slowed their pace until they were walking next to Andre. Carley and Doug willingly moved off to the side so that they could get a chance to talk.

"I grew up in Macon." Lee gave him an honest answer.

"Right here in the heart of Georgia that's what I like to hear," Andy smiled with enthusiasm, "Ya'll seem pretty settled in at that Motor Inn. Whose running things over there?"

"We work as a group, all of us working out for each other." Lee replied, not wanting to say that either Lilly or Kenny were in charge.

"I hear that. There are so many dumbasses fighting each other these days, it's just stupid!" Andy agreed with his answer.

"How many people ya got over there anyway?" Danny asked, something about his voice didn't sit right with Lee and Carley. This question didn't sit right with Jack as well.

Lee glanced at Carley, who had a firm look on her face. He could tell she didn't want him to give an exact number. He afterwards glanced at Jack who gave him the same answer. Understanding this, Lee gave a mental nod of agreement and turned towards Danny, "Enough to defend ourselves."

"Well, that's good! It's getting dangerous out there, well, you guys know." Andy stated, "Well, we'd love to get ya all out to the dairy. Like I said, we got plenty of food, and quite frankly, we could always use an extra helping hand."

Ben looked over his shoulder at him, "In the summers, I used to help out on a goat farm,"

Danny shrugged with a smile on his face, "I'm sure anything you know will come in handy."

Mark nodded in agreement with a smile on his face, "We all need to help each other."

"Momma's been running the Dairy for as long as I can remember but now it's..." Andy interrupted before he could finish the sentence.

"You think you're going to cut me out of this?!" An unfamiliar sounded nearby, causing everyone to shift their attention towards it.

"Shit! Get down!" Andy told everyone to crouch down, knowing exactly what was going on right now.

Everyone crouched down as Andy and Danny lead them towards the argument, stopping between the trees. It was when two men who were wearing ski mask over their headsappeared in their view. Jack and Carley pulled out their pistols, ready to use them at any second if the two unknown men will noticed them watching them from the distance.

"No one is trying to cut you outta anything!" The bandit with a crossbow said in his defense.

"You and Gary are always pulling this shit! Don't think I haven't noticed!" The bandit with a shotgun didn't believe him and continued to accuse him.

Danny scowled, "Fuckin' bandits."

"Those look like the people who raided my and Travis' camp." Ben told the group, laying his stomach on the ground.

Lee turned to look at Andy, "Who are they?"

Andy shushed him, "Fucking assholes is who they are."

"Fuck you! You knew we were hungry, and you guys were keeping it all to yourselves!" The bandit with a shotgun continued to scream accusations at his pal.

"I only see two." Jack looked around the area.

Carley gripped her gun, "We can take them."

"Oh, no!" Danny shook his head at them, "There's a LOT more."

Andy looked at the group from the motor inn, "Don't worry. Danny and I got ya covered if something happens, but let's just wait this out and hope they move on."

"Fuck you!" The group turned their attention to the bandit with a shotgun as he kicked the other bandit in the chest. The bandit with a crossbow stumbled backwards as the other bandit aimed his shotgun at him and shot the man, killing him instantly. Ben and Doug gasped at the sudden attack as the dead bandit fell. The shotgun wielding bandit approached his former comrades body and fired three more shots into his corpse, "Fuck you! Fuck you! Fuck you!"

"Jesus!" Carley exclaimed after seeing how this bandit just took his buddy's life without hesitation.

"The bandit turned and walked away, "Asshole."

Doug shook his head, not believing what he just witnessed, "It's only been three months. What has the world come to?"

"The world out here has gone to shit. Come on, let's get to the dairy where it's safe." Andy shook his head. He got up from his crouching position and started to make his way towards his dairy. Danny, Lee, Jack, Carley and Mark followed him close behind. Ben and Doug were a bit shaky as they got off the ground and followed behind them.
