Duck

As Lee, Kenny, Mark, Clementine, Katjaa and Duck occupied themselves with their own stuff in the campsite by the abandoned train, Jack, Ben and Travis split up from them and made their way to the train. Not wasting any time, Jack opened the boxcar climbed into the train. Ben and Travis wasted no time and followed him and took a look aoundn the boxcar. Inside the boxcar, they saw a mattress, a chair, and other various items such as boxes and used thrash.

"Somebody's been livin' in here." Jack stated upon eyeing the boxcar.

Travis nodded in agreement, "Yeah, man. Shit."

"Think they're gone?" Ben asked.

"I hope so, but this looks recently used." Jack replied as he looked over his shoulder and shifted his gaze between the two teenagers, "Be on the lookout and have your guard up."

Ben and Travis silently nodded in understanding at him. The group of three wasted not ime and split up around the boxcar and started searching through the stuff inside it, hoping to find anything useful for their group. A map appeared in Jack's view a few seconds later. He walked over to where it was laying and picked it up. He narrowed his eyes at the map, taking a good look at it.

Travis approached him from behind with a questioning look on his face, "What'cha got there?"

Jack looked over his shoulder at him and gave him a nod of confirmation, "A map of where the train goes. I think these tracks might lead to the coast. Route 27, Savannah."

"Savannah?" Travis put his hand on his chin with a thoughtful look on his face, "Isn't that where Kenny wants to to go?"

Jack glanced back at the map and nodded in confirmation, "Mh-hm."

"Great." Travis smiled, "All we need to do now is find a way to get this train running."

"You're right." Jack nodded in agreement, keeping his expression blank as he glanced at Ben who quickly returned his gaze, "This train was heading to Savannah. Let's go to the front of the train and see if there is a chance we can get this training."

"Okay." Ben replied in understanding.

The group of three walked out of the boxcar and made thei wway to the cab. Jack stopped in his tracks for a second, having noticed body of a male through the door's glass with an orange vest slumped over the controls of the train. He grabbed his rifle and looked over his shoulder at Ben and Travis and gave them a nod of his head to silently tell them to be cautious and Ben and Tavis nodded in understanding.

The blonde haired young man turned away from them a second later and slowly walked into the cab, making their way towards the body. He pressed the tip of his rifle against the body, making it fall of the chair. Jack's face twisted in disgust as he saw the body was missing half of it's skull, showing a goo ozing sight of a scrambled brain. He looked towards the window and saw that one was shattered, with blood dripping from it. It didn't took him long to realize what happened.

"I don't think this guy came back." Ben stated.

"Jesus." Jack whispered to herself.

"Jesus indeed." Travis nodded in agreement. His eyes grew sadder as he glanced at Jack, "How long do you think he has?"

"Hard to say. Can't imagine what Ken and Katjaa are going through right now." Jack gave him an honest answer, letting out a sigh as he looked away from Travis and saw an orange light blinking, "That light is blinking."

"Push it." Ben stated.

Jack looked at him questioningly, "Push it?"

Ben shrugged, "Why not?"

"Are you serious?" JAck wanted to be sure.

"Here, look." Ben replied as she pressed the button. The train made a loud hissing sound and steam slithered from below the brakes, "It's just the brakes."

Jack nodded at him in approval, "Okay, I'll give you that one."

"See, Benji? You can be useful." Travis smiled, making his friend glance away from him as he gave him a pat on his shoulder.

Kenny walked into the cab with an excited smile on his face, followed by Lee, "This fucker works?"

Jack glanced at him and gave him a nod, "Seems like it."

"I'll be damned." Kenny shook his head with a pleasantly suprised look on hs face as he sat down on the front seat where the body once laid.

Lee looked at Jack, "Do you know how we get it movin'?"

"I don't know." Jack replied as he turned towards Ben who started moving the body outside through one of the doors, "I don't know, ask Mister. Amtrak over here."

"No clue." Ben replied, dragging the body out of the cab.

Jack rolled his eyes in a slightly amused manner, leaving his expression blank as held the map he found in the boxcar out to Kenny, "We found this in the boxcar back here. You might make a good use of it."

Kenny took the map from him, feeling how his eyes widened in a pleasant suprise, "Whoa, is this what it looks like?"

Lee took a look at the map and smiled with a nod of his head, "I think so."

Kenny smiled, "This hoss will take us right to Savannah. A hundred tons of steel. Put a thousand walkers between us and the ocean and we don't have to give a shit! I can't believe it."

"We just have to figure out how to get it started." Lee pointed out.

"I'm sure we can figure it out. How hard could it be?" Kenny replied.

"Me and Jack will take care of that." Travis said as Jack silently nodded.

"That's the spirit." Kenny smiled as Ben walked back into the cab, "Ben. Can you go back to the camp and help Mark in keeping an eye on the rest?"

"Sure." Ben nodded at him with a saddened and guilty expression on his face as he walked out of the cab. Upon reaching the rest of their group, he looked at Katjaa, Duck and Mark with a guilty look on his face.

"Do you think we should go get Mark?" Kenny asked as he glanced at Jack and Lee while Travis inspected the wall of the cab. There were four panels, each one with a number and a series of knobs and dials. She adjusted the two levers in the panel and numbered 6, "He may know something about this kind of stuff with his experience from the military and all."

Jack shook his head, "I don't know."

"We should let him rest as well." Lee added as Travis looked at the panels with a thoughtful look on his face, "He is still in pain from the gunshot."

Jack raised his brow, "How is doing right now? Did you patch him up?"

"I did as much as I could with my slim to none skills and us not having any medical supplies." Lee gave him an explanation, letting out a sigh, "We need to find some medical supplies soon otherwise his state will get worse."

"I see. Shit..." Jack shook his head, letting out a sigh himself.

"Guys. I think I may be able to..." Travis cut their conversation short as he adjusted the two levers in the panel and numbered 6. Jack's eyes widened, stopping the conversation he was having with Lee and Kenny right now as all three of them saw the panel 6 lightning up in a positive light when Travis pressed those switches.

Lee's eyes widened in suprise, "Holy shit, did you just...?"

Kenny smiled, "Fuck, yeah."

"How did you do that?" Jack wanted to know.

"Pops had me once watch a documentary about trains when I was in the elementary school and those panels reminded me of something so I gave it as go." Travis explained, rubbing the back of his head with a proud look on his face as he added, "I don't know what to do with the others, though."

Jack looked around the cab and saw a torn notebook hanging on the wall. He grabbed the notebook and saw that the front page was entitled "ENGINE STARTUP", "I think I just found a solution to that." His enthusiasm died down when he saw the front page torn out, "Dammit. The front page is torn out."

"Don't worry." Lee replied as he remembered seeing a pencil in the RV when Kenny and Katjaa called out to him to tell him about Doug's condition, "I'll be back in a second."

He turned away from Kenny, Jack and Travis and walked out of the cab. The relief of actually having a working train and something going their way for once made him jog back to the RV and retrieve the pencil. After taking the pencil out of the RV, he made his way back to the cab and took the notebook from Jack. Remembering him seeing Clementine do leaf rubbings a few times, he scribbled the paper and could distinguish the indentations of the writing. There were four rows of instructions, all of them marked by a number - 6, 5, 9, 9.

After figuring out the puzzle, Lee dictated the numbers to Travis as Travis regulated the buttons, doing his best not to mess anything up. Once they were done with it, Lee, Jack and Travis walked out of the cab to the engine compartments. Jack opened randomly one, finding out it had tools. It had spike remover, spanner and monkey wrench to the exact.

Jack nodded to himself at the view of it, "Looks useful."

"I'll take the monkey wrench." Lee said as he took the monkey wrench for himself while Travis chuckled beside him.

Jack raised his brow at Travis, "What's so funny?"

"Nothing." Travis replied with amusement evident in his voice, "It's just, who the hell named a tool the monkey wrench?"

"Dont' know. Don't care." Jack shrugged, not caring much about it as he grabbed the spanner and the spiker remover, "Travis. Can you back to the rest and give those to Ben and Mark? They could use something to defend themselves with."

"Sure. I'm on it, man." Travis said as he took the spanner and the spike remover from him. Not wasting any time, he turned away from Lee and Jack and made his way back to the rest of the group while Jack and Lee went back to work. Lee turned the switch of one of the compartments twice. Within a few seconds, the engine started humming.

Kenny walked out of the cab a second later with a pleased expression on his face, "Holy shit, we're golden!"

"Yeah, we are." Lee smiled, "Golden. Man, feels good."

Jack nodded in agreement, "Good to know something goes our way for once."

"C'mon, let's see if she'll move." Kenny said as he turned away from Lee and Jack and returned the cab. Lee and Jack followed him into the cab and walked into it as Kenny sat down on the front seat, "It's all yours." Lee used the throttle and the train moved suddenly before stopping, "Shit! Of course, we're still attached. Can you find out where we're stuck and get us un-stuck?"

"Yeah." Lee replied.

"Let's go." Jack said as Lee nodded at him.

Jack and Lee wasted no time and walked out of the cab. The two men left the boxcar where someone was living and climbed out. He walked behind that boxcar and saw the other boxcars destroyed. Lee set the monkey wrench below the pin that kept derailed wagon coupled with the train with the train. He pushed up until the pin popped out. He looked at Jack and nodded at him, letting him know it was done.

Jack nodded at him and turned around to tell Kenny they were good to go, "There. Hey, Kenny, we're loose!"

"Let's go back to the rest. I'm sure we'll be moving out soon." Lee told him as Jack nodded in agreement. The two men climbed into the boxcar and exchanged glances as they and moved towards the log where the rest of their group was resting right now.

"You touch any of my stuff?" A voice asked from behind them. Jack and Lee stiffened and turned around to the source of the voice and an old dirty man wearing a coat. Lee and Jack kept their cool as the old man slowly walked towards them.

Lee shook his head, "I didn't take anything."

"I did, though." Jack added, seeing no point in lying, "I took the map of the train routes."

The unknown man nodded at him, "That's fine, you can have that."

"Really?" Jack raised his brow at him.

"Yeah. I got those train routes all up here." The old man said as he pointed to his head, before turning back to his camp, "I guess it's no worse for wear. Name's Chuck. Charles if you're fancy."

"Lee." Lee introduced himself to him.

"Jack Weaver." Jack introduced himself to him a second later.

Chuck nodded in understanding and looked out of the boxcar, "That your crew outside?"

"Yeah." Lee nodded in confirmation.

Jack crossed his arms, "I take it you've met them?"

Chuck nodded in confirmation, "I saw you walking through here and thought about scaring the pants off of you. But I couldn't force myself to do it."

Jack nodded with a slightly unnerved look on his face, "I see..."

Lee bit his lip, "You're still kinda freaking me out."

"Train folk'll do that. Already met everyone outside; they all warmed to me right quick in direct sunlight." Chuck explained as he turned away from them and climbed out of the boxcar. Jack and Lee exchanged glances with each other and followed him. The homeless man sat down on the log beside his guitar as Clementine ran over to Lee.

She smiled up at him, "You met Chuck!"

"Yeah. I did." Lee nodded in confirmation.

"It's so nice to meet someone normal for a change." Katjaa said.

Mark nodded in agreement, "Definitely a breath of fresh air."

"He gave us candy. Ben and Travis, too!" Clementine added, smilling as everyone glanced at Ben and Travis who was eating the candy bar right now. Ben looked up from the candy bar he was eating right now and looked around himself as Travis chuckled at the awkward expression he had on his face right now.

Lee looked back at Chuck and greeted him into the group, "Welcome."

Chuck looked up at him and nodded, "Thank ya."

"You met Kenny?" Jack asked.

Chuck shfted his gaze to him and nodded, "Sure. Man shares my love of the road."

"Have to agree with you here..." Jack nodded in agreement as everyone turned towards Duck who suddenly started coughing.

Chuck stood up and knelt down in front of the sick child, "I'm awful sorry your son's not feeling good."

"I appreciate your concern." Katjaa expressed her gratitude.

"Well, with a little TLC, I'm sure he'll be fit as a fiddle in no time." Chuck nodded, not knowing the truth behind Duck's condition as he got himself into a standing position and glanced at his train while Kenny made his way to his group, "And I can offer y'all whatever I got, although it ain't much."

Katjaa smiled at him gratefully, "Thank you. We'd like to do the same."

Jack looked at him questioningly, "How did you survive for all this time? You hunt? You loot?"

"I get however I can." Chuck replied.

"Why do you live in the train?" Travis asked out of curiosity.

"That things keeps the deedies out." Chuck explained. "Never had a problem with them."

Jack hummed, nodding his head, "This is actually kind of smart."

"Where are you from? You live around here?" Mark voiced his question next.

"Georgia boy. You saw where I live." Chuck responded.

Kenny made his way to his group, making sure everyone became aware of his presence before glancing at Jack and Lee, "So that's it? We're cut loose?"

"Seems that way, yeah." Lee nodded at him.

"Great." Kenny replied in a pleased manner and looked around his group, "We don't got much left, so just gather whatever you have. Let's go."

Mark got up from the log and looked at Chuck with a questioning look on his face, "Want a ride?"

"Well, it sounds like you're taking my home." Chuck replied, getting up from the log with his guitar in his hand as the group started to make their way towards the boxcar.

"That's a yes then." Kenny stated, following his group to the boxcar.

"Haven't found anything better for keeping the creepy-crawlies out than that boxcar." Chuck replied as he walked over to the boxcar and climbed inside, followed by the rest of the group. Not wasting any time, everyone from the group made their way to the train and began climbing into the boxcar. Chuck, Mark, Travis and Ben climbed into the train one by one with Jack, Lee and Kenny watching them climb into the train as Clementine stopped in front of them and looked down sadly.

"Duck's sick." She told them sadly.

"Get on the train, Clementine." Kenny told her sternly, making her slump before climbing on the train as Lee and Jack glanced at him. Before anything could be said about it, Katjaa made their way to them while carrying her son and spoke to them.

"He is getting sicker." She informed them sadly.

"Let me look at him." Kenny tensed up as he leaned in to take a look at his son. Duck looked up at him weakly before slumping back down again. Kenny's eyes widened a bit as he leaned back in.

"We can't ignore this." Lee said.

"Lee's right, Ken." Jack nodded in agreement with a saddened look on his face, "Look at him. This is happening."

Kenny cut them off, "Ain't shit happening. And if it were, what can we do here? We get on the train and we find something better. That is the plan."

Katjaa shook her head at her husband, "I think they just want to talk it through."

"It's talked through!" Kenny snapped, "Get on, Kat. I'll be up front. I don't want to hear any nonsense until we get where we're goin'"

The fisherman turned away from them without another word and made his way back to the cab as Jack, Lee and Katjaa exchanged worried and saddened glances with each other. Katjaa sighed sadly, getting herself on the train and was followed by Jack as Lee made his way to the head of the train and walked into the cab where Kenny was already in the driver's seat.

Lee and Kenny exchanged glances with each other and nodded, knowing the two were ready to head out down the train tracks as Lee reached forward and grabbed the throbble. He pulled the level as the train came to life and slowly began to roll forward down the tracks, slowly beginning to take them towards Savannah...

-----

The train sped fast, heading towards the horizon and cutting through the lifeless forest as the boxcar was silent. The group split up around the boxcar, doing whatever they could to pass the time. Ben and Travis sat together in the corner, having a conversation with each other with Travis doing most of the talking while Mark silently sat by himself, adjusting his wounded shoulder every now and then to make it hurt less even if he knew the effects would be slim if not non-existent.

Jack sat in the corner, keeping his arms crossed as no one approached him due to him seeming like he was not in the mood to talk while Clementine sat close to Duck and Katjaa, hugging her knees as she watched Katjaa tending Duck. Duck's state was terrible to say the least as he looked worse than before. His skin was extremely pale and his breathing was extremely shallow, looking like he was barely able to make himself breath.

"Got to be hard on ya, eh? Five adults one of which is wounded taking care of four kids; no disrespect, you two." Chuck tried to start a conversation, glancing behind him at Ben and Travis when he uttered the last words as Ben and Travis frowned in irritation.

"There were more of us." Lee replied sadly.

"Dead get 'em?" Chuck asked.

Lee thought about Doug, Larry, Carley and Andre. All of whom were killed by the other people, not the walkers, "No."

"Ah. Livin' got 'em." Chuck nodded in understanding as his conversation got cut short by Duck coughing up some blood.

"Lee! Lee. I need you. Right now!" Katjaa called out for Lee as soon as it happened as everyone turned towards her and saw what just happened. Needless to say. This view just made them feel worse and much more helpless on the inside. Lee wasted no time and quickly made his way to Katjaa and Duck as Katjaa looked up at him, "Would you get that off his face? My hands are full here."

"Of course." Lee replied as he gently picked up the rag and wiped Duck's mouth with it, getting rid of as much blood as he could and leaving the rag all bloodied up.

"He's out of time." Katjaa stated with a helpless look on her face, fighting back tears, "We need to stop this train."

"Okay." Lee replied in understanding, returning her saddened gaze as he turned away from Katjaa and Duck and made his way to the door between the carts. Not wasting any time, he made his way to the cab while bracing himself to confront Kenny about it and trying to come up with the right words to say to him. Taking a deep breath, he entered the cab and glanced at Kenny, "You need to stop the train."

Kenny glanced over his shoulder at him and narrowed his eyes at Lee. He didn't do anything what Lee asked him to, though. He turned away from him a second later, setting his eyes back on the road ahead of him.

"Ken!" Lee tried to get his attention again as he pulled out a bloodied up rag and showed it to his friend, "Kenny!"

Kenny looked back at him and set his eyes on the rag, "What? What the hell is that?!"

"Your son's blood." Lee gave him his answer, "He's getting worse."

"Get outta here, Lee." Kenny told him, refusing to acknowledge it.

"You know he's dying." Lee stated in a serious tone.

"Nobody knows shit! He'll be fine." Kenny argued in denial, "What is the goddamn deal? He's a little sick, but we can't just quit. It's a scratch! He's not like the others. Jesus, all y'all are just makin' it worse."

Lee shook his head, throwing the rag aside, "This isn't about Duck."

Kenny spun the chair around and got up from his, getting himself right up to Lee's face, "The hell it's not. You think we're pals and you know me? You're some elitist prick with a fancy education who can pick me apart?"

Lee decided to ignore Kenny's comment, "It's not like that."

"The fuck it isn't." Kenny spat out to him.

Lee looked directly into his eyes, "You think you're the reason Duck was bitten. You think what happened to him is your fault. You feel like you failed him as his father. You feel like you failed to protect him and now he's like that because of you."

Kenny's expression turned into one of sadness as he clenched his fist while looking like he was about to break down, "This shouldn't have happened to him. What did he do to deserve this? All he wants is for people around him to be happy. It should have been me in his place..."

"I agree with you, Ken. It should have happen to him. But you can't blame yourself for this. Sometimes things like that are out of our control. What you need to focus on right now is your family now, man. Your wife needs you. Your son needs you." Lee agreed with Kenny's pain, letting out a sigh as he tried to talk some sense into him. He looked directly into his eyes with his sympathy filled ones, "You need to stop the train, man."

Kenny lowered his head, feeling tears forming in his eyes as he knew what was about to happen. Letting out a sigh, he turned towards the controls and pulled on the breaks, stopping the train. Once the train stopped, he got himself out of the train with Lee right behind him and the two men made their way towards where the rest of their group was gathered right now. Katjaa stood by Duck who was laying on the floor of the boxcar, barely keeping himself conscious while Clementine stood close to them, close to tears. Jack, Mark, Ben, Travis and Chuck kept their distance out of respect.

"Ken, it's... I think it's time." Katjaa informed her husband, looking like she was about to cry as Lee and Kenny stopped next to her. Kenny lowered his head, finding it harder for him to keep the tears away. He looked up towards the rest of the group a second later, setting his eyes on Chuck.

"The boy's been bit. In case you haven't figured that out." He informed the homeless man as Chuck closed his eyes, lowering his head in a silent prayer while Jack, Mark, Ben and Travis watched everything with sadness evident on their faces.

Lee placed his hand on Kenny's shoulder, "Take as long as you need."

"There ain't no time left to take." Kenny replied sadly and glanced at his wife, "What are we gonna do?"

"We can't allow him to become one of those things." Katjaa replied sadly.

"But what if... what if he doesn't?" Kenny asked with desperation evident in his voice.

"Kenny, I love you very much. I love our son more than life itself. I need you to hear me." Katjaa glanced at Duck again with tears in her eyes, "What you are saying, that he may not turn, is foolish."

"But..." Kenny tried to say, "There's... Come on, Kat..."

"If you think of one, let me know." Katjaa cut him off sadly.

"Isn't there some sort of pill, or something we can just give him?" Kenny desperately tried to come up with something, "He can just drift off to sleep, right, hon? I mean, Jesus, this is our son!

"I know! But we know it's..." Katjaa once again cut him off as she pointed at her head, "Here. Or nothing."

"Well, fuck! Just... who, then?" Kenny asked with desperation becoming more evident in his tone, "You want me to?"

"I'll do it..." Everyone turned turned towards voice and saw Lee looking at the family in front of him with a saddened look on his face, "No parent should have to do something like this."

"Lee's right, Kat. We can say our goodbyes and... just let that be it." Kenny couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence.

"I don't know..." Katjaa shook her head and glanced towards Lee, "Lee, you'd be doing this family a great service. Why don't we take him into the forest so Clementine doesn't have to see?"

"Of course." Lee nodded as Kenny and Katjaa picked up their child and carried him into the forest out of everyone's view.

"What's happening?" Clementine asked shortly after Kenny and Katjaa went into the forest with their son.

Lee stepped closer to her and crouched down to met her eye level, "Duck is dying."

Clementine nodded sadly with tears in her eyes, "I know. What are you doing?"

"I'm putting him out of his misery." Lee gave her an honest answer.

"For good?" Clementine wanted to know.

"Yes. So he doesn't come back." Lee was cut off by a sudden gunshot in the forest. He got himself into a standing position and glanced towards the forest with an alarmed look on his face with the rest of the group growing equally as concerned, "What the?!"

"The hell?" Jack asked with an alarmed look on his face as he grabbed his rifle while Travis, Ben and Mark looked around themselves with alarmed and concerned looks on their faces.

"NO!" Kenny's scream rang from the woods.

"Mark! Travis! Ben! Take Clementine into the train! Jack! You come with me! Come on!" Lee shouted to his group and pushed himself into run towards the forest as Jack wasted no time and followed him into the woods with his rifle in ready while the rest of the group took Clementine into the train.

Lee and Jack ran together through the forest, rushing past the trees as quickly as they could as they made their way towards the gunshot. They made their way to their destination a second later and what they saw made them froze in their tracks and their faces went pale in shock upon what they saw. What they saw was a truly horrible scene as they saw Kenny on his knees, cradling Katjaa's body in his arms while Duck laid slumpe against the tree. It didn't take long for them to realize what must have happened...

"Kat! Kat! Katjaa! Why, Kat? Honey, oh, fuckin' God...!" Kenny cried in despair over what happened to his wife as he pressed his face against her neck while sobbbing.

Lee shook his head in shock, "Jesus..."

"Fuck. Ken. I'm so sorry..." Jack shook his head, not knowing what else to say as he felt himself suffocating on the inside at the view in front of him.

" I... I..." Kenny failed to utter anything to his friends as he looked over his shoulder at him with tears staining his cheeks. He shifted his gaze back to his deceased wife and brushedhis hand over Katjaa's face to close her eyes. He picked up the gun and approached Duck as Lee and Jack followed him to the dying boy. He looked down at him and his voice sounded completely lost and hopeless when he said, "What do we do?"

"Give me the gun, Ken. I'll do it." Lee told him as Kenny complied, not saying anything. Kenny and Jack kept their eyes on Duck with Jack reaching out to place his hand on Kenny's shoulder to comfort him even if he knew nothing he would do will make his friend feel better as Lee aimed the pistol at Duck, feeling like something was stabbing him through his chest because of what he was about to do and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Duck right in the middle of his forehead, putting the boy out if his misery...
