Chapter VI:
(Disclaimer: all of this belongs to Rick Riordan, except for Terra. I made her up.
Note: Now for Jasper!!!!!!! If they have a son, they should name him that. It would totally work out. Btw, nice shirt Jason.)
I was in total shock. This wasn't some middle-aged women a little bit of gray hair and wrinkles. This was a drop-dead gorgeous young woman with smooth pale skin like mine, lush black hair, coffee brown eyes, and she was wearing a lovely white silk dress. Only I recognized it as signature ice cloth. That really is mom.
"Wait, did you say 'mom'?" Leo said looking a little disturbed, but was still starring at her.
I could tell he was smitten by my mom. It was kind of disturbing (especially since I kinda like him), but I had to admit that my mom was pretty.
Only then did she notice me. She kindly regarded me, "Hello Terra."
She started to glow and I shielded my eyes just as she was turning into her true form. The glow died down and I saw her (looking a little sterner than before) in a new outfit.
She wore a "slightly darker than a light blue" Roman toga (Why the toga? Don't ask me.) with snowflake designs lightly etched on it. Underneath, she was wearing a similar white silk dress. I couldn't find a real difference, but I felt like there was. On her head, she wore an ice wreath like a Caesar from Roman times.
What's up with that? Gods are weird.
She walked down all the way and stood at the bottom.
I was so glad to see her that I wanted to just run up to her and give a hug, so I did.
I was naturally short, so if I starred straight at her, my eyes would be parallel with her chin. She had gone stiff when I had hugged her. I don't know why, but she did.
"Terra." She said sternly.
I got the message immediately. She didn't want to be hugged, she didn't love me that much. I began to have doubts.
"Does she even love me?" I thought.
I let go and stood back a good ways away. I looked awkwardly to the side where no one was standing, embarrassed of my enthusiasm of seeing my mother and having the completely ignorant idea that she loved me.
She gave me a stern and slightly evil look that perfectly said:
"Don't you ever dare do that again or I will freeze you and make you my new ice sculpture."
How could I have been so foolish as to think that my mother actually loved me? She left me and my father with another mouth to feed for years. She was the one who made my father snap. She was the one to blame for my years of torture and abuse. My father hadn't hated me. He hated her. It was the alcohol that made him take it out on me.
I clenched my fists in resentment. I no longer longed to be here with my mother. I wanted to push that button that changed Festus back into a dragon and get the heck out of this place.
I felt tears starting to form in my eyes, but I wouldn't let my mom see. I twisted my head more to the right and forced the tears not to come out.
An awkward silence hung in the air for a while.
"Father would like to see the one called Jason," Mom said.
"Then it is him?" Zethtes asked excitedly.
"We'll see," she said. "Zethes, bring our guests."
We all went forward, but Mom gave Leo a less threatening stare than she had towards me.
Why did he get the special treatment? I am her daughter.
"Not you, Leo Valdez," she said.
"Why not?" He said, sounding a little bit like a whiny kindergartener.
"You can not be in the presence of my father," Mom said. "Fire and ice-it would not be wise."
She gave me a sideways glance.
"We're going together," Jason insisted, putting his hand on Leo's shoulder, "or not at all."
The way that Jason was standing up for Leo and insisting that he go with us reminded me of Percy. He would always be there for us, no matter what. In fact, Percy told me that his fatal flaw was loyalty. He would always have himself be killed, tortured, harassed, etc. instead of a friend if he could. It was one of the ways monsters and other forces of evil could get his attention.
Mom had tilted her head, like she wasn't used to people refusing her orders. If she had been living with me like any other mother, she would have been used to this by now.
"He will not be harmed, Jason Grace, unless you make trouble. Calais, keep Leo Valdez here. Guard him, but do not kill him."
Cal pouted. "Just a little?"
"No," Mom insisted. "And take care of his interesting suitcase, until Father passes judgement."
We all looked at Leo, asking with our facial features how he wanted to play this out. I was ready to fight for him. I didn't want to leave him alone with a hockey ox. We waited for a while as he sized up my Mom and uncles.
"It's fine, guys," he said. "No sense causing trouble if we don't have to. You go ahead."
"Listen to your friend," Mom advised. "Leo Valdez will be perfectly safe. I wish I could say the same to you, son of Jupiter. Now come, King Aquilon is waiting."
"Wait, Aquilon? I thought his name was Boreas." Leo said.
I noticed to. How she had called him a son of Jupiter and had called Boreas, Aquilon. What's up with all of this stuff? Jupiter is Zeus' Roman name. Does that mean Aquilon is Boreas' Roman name? I don't know and I don't really care right now.
"I'll stay with Leo." I decided. I didn't want to be with that heartless Ice Queen.
"You sure, Terra?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." I said.
Piper hesitated, but I gave her a smile that told her it was gonna be alright.
"Okay." She said.
They went up the staircase and when Mom gave me one last glance, I folded my arms and glared at her. She stiffened with pursed lips and forged ahead with the rest of them up the stairs.
"You didn't have to be here with me, I'll be fine on my own with Cal." Leo said.
"No, it's okay. I didn't want to be with her." I said.
He got who I was talking about and we went over to one of the frozen couches.
Leo had sat next to me. I could read the pity he had for me on his face. He looked like he wanted to make me feel better.
The fact that I could see it on his face and it bothered him to see me upset made me feel a little better, but not a lot.
I curled up next to the arm of the couch. The arms were pretty tall for a couch and made a nice surface to lean against.
"You okay, Terra?" Leo asked.
I looked over at him, hoping that my eyes had cleared up from my small moment of crying.
"Yeah, sure. I just...hmm....." I said sitting up, trying to get the right words out without starting to cry again.
"Sister like that most times." Cal managed to put together after straining his brain to put together the sentence. (You could see it on his face.)
"Yeah," I said and looked back at the stairway, Jason and Piper disappearing. "I could tell."
I looked back at my company and noticed that Leo was frowning.
"What's up, Leo? You look like you're sad or thinking very hard about something." I asked.
He snapped out of his mood. "Oh. Um. Nothing, I'm alright."
I just shrugged my shoulders and looked around the room. I looked up towards the ceiling at the dangling icicles. They looked very unstable and I didn't really like that.
I would have just let my powers flow out of my hand (visibly) and fixed that, but I think Cal would tackle me to the ground and try to kill me. So I started tapping my foot, sending invisible trails of ice to the ceiling and adding a six-inch layer of ice to the bases of all the icicles.
They stopped threatening to fall on us, and I felt more secure.
A door from a corner of the room burst open, making Leo and I jump. A hotel valet service came out of nowhere. A girl, no older than 35 checked out our clothes and shook her head.
"No, no, no. Not exceptional. Come on! Let's get you cleaned up." She said.
Her hair was red, with blonde highlights and had it drawn up in a tight bun. Her facial features were chiseled like a stone and she had light brown eyes. Her lips were bright red (way to much lipstick) and her cheeks were blushed to heavily. She wore a suit with a white blouse and red high heels.
The other men pushed us towards a door on the other side of the room that I hadn't noticed before. Cal followed us.
"Uhhh... Where are we going?" I asked as we went down a long hall.
The hall had a maroon carpet on the floor and the walls were beige. the ceiling was an off-white and had slightly yellow lights lighting up the hallway. Brown doors lined the hallway and when we finally reached the end, there was a metal elevator.
"We're sending you two to the spa to get cleaned up. You can't stay in Lord Boreas' penthouse looking like that!" She said like it was obvious we were out of fashion.
I exchanged confused looks with Leo after we both had checked out our outfits. I thought I didn't look as bad as Leo, who was stained with oil and grease, but she made it sound like I was hideous. Like I was a descendant of Medusa or something.
We went into the elevator and she pressed the button labeled 2. It must have been the floor with the spa.
There was a song on in the elevator. It went something like this:
"There is no snow on the mountain tonight,
Not a footprint to be seen.
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I'm the Queen.
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside,
Couldn't keep it in,
Heaven knows I've tried.
Don't let them in,
Don't let them see.
Be the good girl you've always have to be.
Conceal don't feel,
Don't let them know!
Well now they know!
Let it go, let it go.
Can't hold it back anymore.
Let it go, let it go.
Turn away and slam the door!
I don't care what their going to say!
Let the storm rage on....
The cold never bothered me anyway."
I turned to Leo with a look of shock on my face. He seemed to have been listening to the music to because he had an expression that was mixed in confusion and laughter.
"This is my freaking song." I whispered.
The song continued:
"It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small.
And the fears that once controlled me,
Can't get to me at all!
It's time to see what I can do,
To test the limits and break through.
No right, no wrong,
No rules for me.
I'm free!
Let it go, let it go!
I'm am one with the wind and sky!
Let it go, let it go!
You'll never see me cry!
Here I stand!
And here I'll stay!
Let the storm rage on....."
It went into a piano solo that I really liked.
"My power flurries through the air into the ground.
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around.
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast!
I'm never going back,
The past is in the past!
Let it go, let it go!
And I'll rise like the break of dawn!
Let it go, let it go!
That perfect girl is gone!
Here I stand in the light if day!
Let the storm rage oooooon!
The cold never bothered me anyway."
The song ended and my jaw was hanging wide open. That song totally fit me! It even talked about ice powers!!! What the heck?!?!
"Well, you haven't heard all songs in existence, so your's might still be out there waiting for you to find it." Nico had said.
I guess I actually found mine.
The doors opened up to a room with white tile for the flooring, white walls, and a white ceiling. Green plants decorated the room and a glass door led to a different room. I could see all of those spa chairs that you sit in to have pedicures and a bath full of mud.
There were several ladies with their hair in buns and white outfits and white sandals. One of them walked up to us and gave us a forced smile.
"Welcome to the spa, I am Chelsea. What treatment would you like today?" She asked Leo and I.
Chelsea's age was hard to determine, but she was definitely beautiful. Her image seemed to flicker. One second her hair would be black and curly with green eyes and dark full lips, then straight light brown hair and hazel eyes with a lighter shade of full lips. Is it just me or is she giving off a pink aura?
Something was bothering me. Like I should know who this is. It was bothering me so bad that I didn't notice that I was starring at her strangely. I snapped out of it.
I then looked at Leo like "Why is this lady making us do this?"
The lady who had accompanied us answered.
"They'll have the special. And get their clothes washed." She said handing Chelsea a few drachmas.
Chelsea smiled even wider and had one of the very few men I saw there take Leo and give him whatever "the special" was. Cal left with Leo.
"Right this way, Terra Jones." She said, beckoning me to follow her.
I had no idea how she knew my name, but being a demigod, stuff like that usually happens.
I followed her over to the glass doors leading to the room with all those spa recliners. She went down the room and ignored all the equipment in the room. She stared straight ahead and kept walking. I looked at all the cool things they had. Some were typical spa appliances, others were weird, and brightly colored, looking and weren't recognizable.
She stopped suddenly, only I hadn't noticed because I was being entertained by a young woman in a bright green chair having a full-on makeover by the chair. She was even getting her hair cut and her teeth whitened. I bumped into her and apologized.
"Oh, no. It's alright. Our spa is the most advanced in the whole world. Some of our machines are rather interesting." She gave me a kind smile that brought out more of her beauty.
I suddenly felt jealous of her glamorous looks.
"Our demigod section is this way, Miss Jones." She said pulling a curtain door to the side so I could enter.
Now I know she's some sort of person/monster or animal in disguise.
We walked into another white room, but this one had gold and silver designs on the wall. They went I from swirls to flowers and sometimes had hidden pictures in them. This room had different kinds of plants that Annabeth could have recognized and told me every single thing about. The machines looked even more high-tech and some others a little dangerous.
This must have been the demigod section because there were all the magazines called "Godly Gossip" or fashion magazines that Aphrodite had written. Others were news from other gods. One I noticed was called "The Mind of Athena" which I assumed talked about knowledge and cool wisdom that Athena would advise.
"Sit down, dear." She gestured to a light blue chair that resembled the green one I had saw that young lady in. I don't think I was ready for an intense makeover.
I sat down anyway and Chelsea grabbed a clipboard to start asking me a few questions.
"Are you allergic to anything?"
"Negative energy, people who don't appreciate my humor, the Twilight movies and books, my parents, school, schoolwork, et cetera." I said trying to keep a straight face. (I succeeded.)
She laughed. "Nice one, but seriously dear, anything?"
"No. I haven't been allergic to anything so far." I answered.
"Great." She wrote something down.
"Now what's your style for elegance?" She asked intently.
"Uhhh. Actually, I'm on a quest tooo...." I couldn't say "save Hera" because people aren't supposed to know the queen of the gods is missing and in danger. "save a couple of our friends who are in deep danger, so I'm not sure we'd have the time to get me dressed up. And even if we did, the clothes wouldn't be appropriate for a quest. And-" I tried to explain, but she cut me off.
Her facial expressions didn't change at all and pretended as if I hadn't just said what I had said.
"Indecisive, are we? I'll see what I can do." She said excitedly like she was ready to doll me up in a second.
I knew I couldn't argue and I would have to just go along with it.
"What's your favorite color?" she asked.
"Ooo. Any shade of blue and teal." I answered.
"Hmm. Okay." She said eyeing me over. "I think I know what to do. Barely any makeup needed."
She wrote some more things down for a while.
"Done!" She exclaimed and tore the sheet of paper off the clipboard.
She beckoned me to follow her to a desk over at the end of the room. I just then realized how long the room was, like 35 feet long.
There was a young and stern looking lady at the desk, typing very quickly on her computer. Her light brown hair in a sloppy bun and her brown eyes looking over black framed spectacles. She made the spectacles look modern, not something Dumbledore wore back in his good old days.
"Britney. Here's the outfit for Miss Jones." She handed Britney the paper.
She eyed the paper then looked up at me.
"I'll be right back." She said, standing up and walking off into the room behind the desk.
When she stood up, I noticed she had like ten arms. Each arm had it's own sleeve and was doing it's own thing to keep them entertained. Two were playing tic tac toe on a piece of paper, three others were playing rock, paper, scissors, and the rest were having a thumb wrestling contest. I wonder where she found that jacket.
Chelsea and I stood there for about twenty minutes staring at the room and just having short conversations here and there, nothing really special. When I thought I was about to die of boredom, Britney came out holding a dress that looked like it came right off of a Greek statue.
It was a light blue that faded into a teal and hand a teal belt and blue metal rings on the straps. The whole dress sparkled. I saw her holding a teal circle that was separated from the dress, but had no idea what it was for.
"It's gorgeous!" I exclaimed.
Britney handed Chelsea the dress and circle and went back to her computer.
"Go change in the dressing room." She pointed to a doorway that I hadn't noticed before and wondered how I had failed to when I had looked up and down this room so many times waiting for Britney to finish the dress.
She only handed me the dress and not the circle, which didn't help me understand what it was.
I walked into the small, red room with mirrors on every wall. There was a wooden bench and I set the dress down on it.
I usually don't get that excited about stuff like this, but the dress was absolutely amazing and I couldn't wait to try it on.
I looked up at the mirror and noticed that my hair was mess and......what the?! I had a streak of oil on my cheek. What the heck? How did that happen? When did that happen?
I formed a piece of cloth and tried to rub it off of my face. It mostly worked, but I could still see it. Let's hope they'll be able to fix my hair, the wind really beat it up.
When I took off my my shirt something clinked to the ground. I looked around on the ground and dug around a bit to find what had made that noise. I finally resorted to picking up my shirt and shaking it. A necklace fell out onto the floor.
I picked it up and it turned out to be my half of the heart necklace that I shared with Nico. Luckily, it hadn't broken. I set it down next to the dress and noticed it would totally match it. Perfect.
Sigh. Nico. I wonder what he's doing right now. Maybe looking for Percy. I don't know, but I hope he's safe.
After putting on the dress I spun around in the dressing room and watched the first layer of the skirt flare out and the next two thin pieces flare a little lower so there wasn't a chance of people seeing my underwear. Thank you Britney.
I noticed I had no shoes to go with the dress and made some of my own. They were sandals that had strings that would lace up your calf.
I grabbed my necklace and put it on before walking out.
"Absolutely darling!" Chelsea exclaimed as I spun for her.
"I love it! Thank you so much Britney!" I said in her direction.
She popped her head up at the sound of her name and then realized what I had said.
"Oh! No problem." She said looking back at her computer.
I shrugged my shoulders and Chelsea noticed the necklace.
"Oh! Perfect! You already had this necklace?" She asked.
"Yes." I said holding it in my hands.
"Now let's do your hair, and a little bit of makeup."
We walked over to a spindly chair that looked a little out of place with all the high-tech ones.
Chelsea undid my hair and started brushing it out. I expected it to be super tangled and hurt a lot, but the tangles fell out with ease and she started to braid it. She threw the finished braid over my shoulder and put the strand of teal cloth around my head.
A headband! It was a frickin' headband! It literally took me that long to figure that out? Seriously?!
She spun me around and fixed some of the hairs on my head and then moved on to makeup. She did a little bit of mascara and some light pinkish coral lipstick on me. She did a few more touches with my hair and a little bit of blush and the looked me over.
"And we're done!" she exclaimed. "Want to see?"
I nodded and she pulled out a mirror from one of the desks across the room. She held it up in front of me and it took me a while to register that it was my reflection.
When I looked in the mirror one year ago, I saw a scared, shy, useless, abused, skinny child. Freakishly blonde hair that would always mess up and fall in front of her face. Freckles that were like dirt sprinkled across her cheeks ad nose. Unattractive facial features and sad looking eyes. She had seemed to emit a feeling of sorrow and anguish.
Now, I saw a young woman in an elegant gown. Her icy blue eyes slightly popping and giving a warm glow as she smiled. Her blonde hair loosely kept and slightly wavy, but not in a way that was unflattering. Her outfit complimented the color of her eyes and her lips stood out in a settle way. Her cheeks were slightly pink, but not like she was embarrassed or mad. It was so settle like it was natural to be there. Her eyelashes were thick, but not freakishly thick. Her features gave of a feminine glow and she seemed to be in some sort of heaven.
I gasped at my reflection. "That's me?"
"Yes, yes it is! Don't you just looove it?!" She said.
"Yeah."
She stood me up. "Let's go find your friend now."
She winked when she said "friend". I gave her a look that said:
"Uhhhhhhh. Yeah.......he is my friend."
She laughed. "Oh, you know what I mean. Being Aphrodite, I can read emotions."
I almost dropped the mirror in my hand.
"Your-you-y-your Aphrodite?" I stuttered.
How could I have been so stupid? I knew there was something about her that I should have noticed before. I was so slow at noticing things. The flickering image and the slightly pink aura should have instantly given it away. I hade been given a makeover by the goddess of love and beauty.
"Why of course. I had to come and see one of my potentially favorite love stories! I-I mean....come on let's go meet Leo." She said hurriedly.
Then it dawned on me what she had said earlier. Did she mean that Leo likes me? Or did she mean that she could just sense my small amount of feelings for him? That's the thing in hate about indirect answers.
"Let me just get my stuff." I said and walked over to the dressing room.
I made my clothes disappear since they were made of ice. (Super easy right? And I'll just make new ones when the time comes.) I got my backpack and carried it out.
"I'll carry that for you dear." Aphrodite said.
A goddess was asking of she could serve me?! Man, I'm not letting this chance pass up.
I gave her my backpack and enjoyed the luxury of having a goddess serve me. Haha! Won't I have something to shove in Drew's face!
I followed Aphrodite down the room and through the curtain door from which we had entered.
When we entered the previous room I recognized the young woman who I had seen earlier in the bright green chair. Her makeover was fabulous and I noticed that she had a new set of clothes on too.
Some people gaped at my dress and whispered. Did I look horrible in it? Or was it that I was stunning? I'll go with stunning.
I put a look of pride on my face and strode after Aphrodite. We entered the main Spa room and Leo, Cal and that lady that took us here. I didn't hate her as much anymore. I appreciated the makeover and new dress.
Leo noticed me instantly and his jaw dropped. I felt my cheeks flush.
"Terra....... You look amazing." He said breathless.
"Thanks." I said.
Leo had been cleaned up and it looked like they attempted to comb out his hair.
"Now let's get you back to Lord Boreas' penthouse." The lady said.
I seriously wish she would tell us her name. I hate not having a name to go with the person and just calling them 'her' or 'him'. It's just annoying to me so much. But I guess I can't really do anything if they won't give me their name.
She walks off towards the entrance to exit and Leo, Cal, and I follow. We went over to the elevator and one of the hotel valet service men pushed the button for the elevator to come.
Two seconds later, we're all pilling into the elevator. I couldn't help but remember the song I had heard earlier. It couldn't be a coincidence. It had to be destiny. If only I could remember what it had said.
After a while, the doors open again and we find ourselves back in the beige hallway with the maroon carpets. We walk down the hallway to the door that supposedly lead to Boreas' penthouse.
It was still the same, all the furniture and carpets frosted over and ceilings decorated with deadly icicles that are no longer as deadly. I had just realized we had left Festus (in suitcase form) in the room.
"Now just sit here, relax, and wait for your friends to come back from their meeting with Lord Boreas. Have a nice day." She left with a spin on her heel and speed walked out the door with the valet service.
I was some what glad to see her leave. I found her snotty.
We walked back to the couch and Leo and Cal talked about something. Judging by how they started off they had already been talking about the topic. They really seemed to have bonded over the short amount of time I had left them.
I just sat there in my favorite dress of all time somewhat listening to Leo and Cal's conversation. I had just realized how weird boys were.
I could barely hear a conversation happening above us. I hoped that it was going alright for Jason and Piper. I wanted to go with them so bad, but yet I didn't want to be around mom.
I felt the resentment swelling inside me again.
"No. Don't be that way. Don't be cold hearted like her. You can chose who you want to be. Don't let your heritage change you." I thought.
The conversation got slowly louder and I heard the sound of people walking down stairs.
I turned around to see Jason, Piper, Mom, and Zethes coming down the stairs.
