Chapter II:
(Disclaimer: all of this belongs to Rick Riordan, except for Terra. I made her up.
Note: I will be putting pictures with the chapters of what I will have the PJO characters look like in my book. You've already seen Terra [Da frickin' cover!]. So I will start with Percabeth.)
My eyes slowly opened. I could hear someone talking in a fast whisper. Everything was blurry, so I couldn't tell who it was talking. All I could make out was two human shaped blobs, one much taller than the other. Then a wave of pain went over my head. Ahg, migraines.
"I thought Khione didn't have children." Said a deep male voice, I think it was the tall one.
"That's what I thought to, but I guess we're wrong." This male voice was very familiar, it was the short one. But who were they?
My eyesight started to come back, and I saw Grover and another man. Grover quickly came to my side. I tried to get up, but he gently pulled me back down by my shoulders.
"I'm sorry, Terra. Just go back to sleep." He told me. But I wanted to know what was going on. I wanted to know where I am.
"No, what's going on? What are you wrong about?" I asked.
He frowned slightly. He grabbed a glass of golden brown liquid and gave it to me. It looked strange, so I gave him a look like. 'You want me to drink this?'
"Just drink it, it'll help." I start to drink it, but I was surprised at the taste and almost choked.
"What's wrong?" He asks.
"It tastes like Oreo birthday cake." His face shows no expression. Shouldn't he at least be a little surprised? This drink, or whatever it is, is a golden brown! And it taste like Oreo birthday cake! Not that I have a problem with that. I actually really like Oreo birthday cake, infact it's my..
"So that's your favorite food." He said seeming mildly interested as he nods his head.
"Is it supposed to taste like your favorite food?" I said bewildered, looking back at the glass.
"Yep, it sure is. Now don't drink all of that." Wait what? Didn't he just say that this would help?
"But I thought you said that it would help." I said looking at him cautiously.
"I'll explain later. Now eat this." He hands me a small cube of this yellowish looking food. I looked at him skeptically.
"Just eat it." I popped it into my mouth. It kind of tasted like smore's.
"It tastes like smore's." I inform him.
I start to feel a little better. I noticed that I was still wearing that beautiful blue gown. I studied it more closely.
"Whoa." I say.
"What?" Grover asks.
"Oh, nothing. It's just that the whole dress is made of ice." I glance at my shoes. I take one off and noticed it's made from solid ice too.
"This is so amazing." Then more questions flooded my mind.
"How long have I been in here? And were exactly is here?" I asked.
Grover sat down on the bed and I saw that he has the legs of a goat. I jump back, well not really jump back. More of a scramble towards the other end of the bed.
"What are you?!"
He just sighed and gave me a warm smile.
"I'm a satyr."
Wait, what?
"Like from Greek mythology? But those aren't real. Is this some kind of sick joke?"
"Yes, Terra. They are very real. And you're in the infirmary, at Camp Half-Blood." Okay that answers that.
"Half meaning what?" I asked. What was I? Some mutant, goat-hybrid too?
"Half human, half god." He said cheerfully. My mind just exploded.
"I think I need to lie down." I put my hand on my head and lowered myself back down on the bed.
"Yeah, it's a lot to take in." Grover stands back up and helps my lie down.
"But it's true. You were even claimed."
"Claimed?" He made it sound like I was a lost toy.
"It means for your godly parent to tell you that you're their kid by putting their symbol over your head."
So was it that huge snowflake that popped up over my head?
"Who's my parent?" I asked.
"As far as we're concerned. You're the daughter of Khione, goddess of snow and ice."
That makes a lot of sense.
"Yeah, I think I need to take a nap. Hopefully it's just a dream."
"That's what everyone says." He starts to leave with the other man, but I stop him.
"Grover, how long have I been in here?" That was one final question I needed for right now.
"Three days."
What? What? What?! I've been asleep for three days and nobody woke me up? Well, if this was reality, I had just fought a Minotaur and won by a hair. So I guess I needed it. And he said it so calmly like it was nothing. Had other people been in the infirmary asleep for longer? I don't know, but sleep hit me hard again and I went out cold.
**************2 hours later************
I slowly opened my eyes to the bright sunlight seeping through my window. It must have been about 4 o'clock. I sat up easily and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I thought for a second that it all must have been a dream, but when I looked around, the room told me a different story. I groaned and flopped back on the bed.
"Let's hope that I make some friends." I rolled out of the bed and tried walking, but was a little shaky. Some random people, also in the orange Camp Half-blood t-shirts, tried to help me, but I brushed them off. It was a little harder in high heels, but I eventually got it.
"I'll have to take you to our camp director, Mr.D." Said some guy.
"What's your name?" I ask and he smiles.
"Will Solace. What's your's?"
"Terra Jones."
He smiles and nods his head. I was so nervous. I had a feeling I was making a friend, but you never know how things would turn out. I could accidentally do something to him to where he doesn't like me anymore and then I'm left with nobody. What if I screw up in front of the camp director and I can't go here anymore and would have to go back to my drunk and abusive dad? That would totally suck.
"Just don't screw up then...... But how would I stop myself from doing that? I'm naturally clumsy." I thought.
"Where are we going?"
"To the Big House." He points toward probably the biggest house I've seen in my life.
"That's a big house." I say.
"Hence the name." Will said.
"So your the daughter of Khione? Huh, I thought she didn't have kids." Well, apparently he's wrong, or I wouldn't be here.
"Well, I guess not." I said and shrugged my shoulders. He looked up and down at me. It sent shivers down my body.
"Is that dress made of ice?" Okay, good. He wasn't checking me out. Well, actually, in a way, I guess?
"I think so," I lifted up the dress a little to show my shoes. "and the shoes too."
He grabbed my cape and whistled. "It's amazing." I smiled.
We came up to two men. One was in a wheelchair and looked vaguely familiar, the other wore a leopard print shirt with running shorts and shoes that didn't go well together. He had a strong scent of grapes. They were playing some sort of card game. Pinochle? I think?
"She's all better Chiron and Mr.D." Mr.D didn't seem interested at all and stared at his cards intently.
"There are many girls in this camp Will, you're going to have to be more specific." Will rolled his eyes.
"The new girl. Terra Jones."
Mr.D made the swirling motion with his hand to tell him to keep going.
"The daughter of Khione." He turned around and seemed surprised at the sight of my dress.
"Yeah, I've heard about you. Defeated a Minotaur with your ice powers, eh? Your also the second one in history to fight one before entering camp." The second?
"Who's the first?" I asked, truly curious. Wow, I made history. But who remembers the second one? It's all about the first one.
"You'll meet him soon." At first I thought he meant I'd die soon and meet him then. Because I thought he was dead, but his reaction to my expression told me otherwise.
"No need to worry, Terry. He's very much alive." He mispronounced my name.
"It's Terra." I corrected him, but he wasn't paying attention. The guy in the wheelchair, who I guess was Chiron since nobody else was around, was beaming at me.
"It's nice to see you're well Terra." I then recognized him, he was the other man when Grover was in the infirmary to check on me. But I thought he was much, much taller. Huh, well I wasn't feeling good, so I guess I was seeing things.
"The nap really helped."
He gave me a small nod. I had a feeling that he was going to be a good friend.
"I'll let Chiron give you a tour of the camp." Will said. He held out a hand to me. I shook it and gave him a nice smile. He took his hand back quickly and made a weird hurt noise.
"Wow. You really are a daughter of Khione. Your hands are ice cold." I folded my arms to keep my hands concealed.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to.." I started but he interrupted.
"It's okay, I'll be fine. It was nice meeting you Terra." He walked off toward an archer's shooting range.
"It seems I beat you again Dionysus." Chiron said putting down the rest of his cards. My mind blew up.
"Dionysus?" I said starring at the man in the leopard shirt. He looked up at me.
"What? You couldn't tell you were in the presence of a god?" I felt my cheeks turn red with embarrassment.
"Oh, no. I-I just didn't expect that such a high power a-as a god, would be given such a job." I stuttered. Why do I stutter so much? He nodded.
"I know right?" He muttered. He poured himself a glass of wine, but then it turned to water.
"Dang it. Stupid curse."
I decided not to ask about it. He seemed not the type for answering questions of curious young people.
Chiron wheeled over to me. "Shall I give you a tour of our camp miss?" I nodded.
"Sure." We started off towards some strangely decorated cabins.
"As Grover told you previously you're half Greek god and half human," I nodded. "and so is everyone else at this camp." There were so many people.
"There are a lot of people." I said, so surprised.
"Well, there are a lot of gods and goddesses."
I had to agree. The Greeks had a god for everything. If I'm correct, there's even a goddess of the sewers. What's her name? Cloacina? Wait, she's Roman. Never mind. It's so confusing with Greek and Roman mythology. Well. I guess it's not MYTHology if it's real. Whatever! This is soooo confusing!
"Yeah." I nodded my head in agreement.
I looked behind me and noticed there was a trail of frost. Dang it! I'm doing that again! Ugh! Well, I'm not sure how to stop it, so I just continued and let the grass underneath me frost. I could tell people were noticing the trail and would follow it with their eyes to see me and the their jaws would drop. I never had this effect on people before.
We got to the area with all the strange looking cabins. "These are the cabins where the demigods sleep. You are to sleep in the cabin of your godly parent."
"Which one's mine?" I asked. I could tell that they were decorated to go with who the god or goddess was, but I wasn't seeing any ice decorated or covered cabins.
"Well, we didn't really think of the goddess Khoine. She's one of the minor goddesses and never had any kids, so we didn't really build one for her." He said scratching the back of his neck, probably embarrassed.
"It's okay. We can just make one, right?" I said enthusiastically. Maybe I could use my powers to decorate it. Then my mind started working like the nerd I really was.
If I could learn to control my powers I could make the actual structure myself. I'd add some spiral staircases and a frozen water fountain and have snowflake designs all throughout the place... My mind went into overdrive and my face was lit up with excitement.
"What are you thinking about, Terra?" Chiron chuckled.
I snapped out of my nerdy world and answered. "Oh! Sorry, I was just thinking if I learned to control this," I gestured to my powers that was frosting the grass around me. "I could possibly make the cabin myself. I already have it all planned out in my head. I'd have two stories and a terrace and there'd be a magnificent frozen water fountain and a snowflake chandelier and.." I caught myself he probably didn't want to hear all of this. I apologized, but he just laughed.
"No, It's fine. It sounds lovely. You remind me of a daughter of Athena. Her name is Annabeth. I bet you two would get along just fine."
Awesome! I could make another friend! I had to remember that name. Annabeth, daughter of Athena. Annabeth, daughter of Athena.
He showed me all the cabins and who they belonged to which took a long time, but was worth it. When we got to the Athena cabin, there were some kids in there, and I was hoping Annabeth was in there. And apparently so was Chiron because he asked a camper where she was. He said that she was over at the beach with Percy, whoever that was.
"So this is the girl who killed the Minotaur with her ice powers, huh?" He seemed to size me up and decided I was okay because he offered his hand. I calmed down and tried to not frost his hand or hurt him as I did with Will.
"I'm Malcolm." He said. Gladly I didn't hurt him, or at least he didn't show it.
"I'm Terra." I folded my arms again and tried not to frost the floor of the cabin, but when we left I saw that there was more than I intended to leave and it left a surprised look on Malcolm's face.
"Oops." I said and smacked my forehead.
"It's okay. It's just ice." He said nicely.
I really have to control my powers, someone could get hurt or I could totally destroy something.
"Looks like you're going to need some help controlling those powers, Terra." Chiron said.
"Yeah, a lot more help." I gave an embarrassed smile.
He continued to show me the bathrooms, the Mess Hall, a super cool climbing wall that would leak lava, an Amphitheater, the canoeing lake, arts and crafts, the volleyball court, the forge (which happened to be unbearably hot and we had to take a break for me to regain energy), the strawberry fields,Pegasus stables, armory, Arena, and north woods. It was such an amazing camp, how did I not notice this?
A bell rang. "Time for dinner. I'll show you where to go." We started heading towards the Mess Hall. "When we have dinner we scrape part of the meal into the campfire next to it you saw earlier. It's a sacrifice for the gods."
I kind of understood this. The flames probably stank though, having so many different food types mixing together and burning. I wonder why the gods asked for that.
Chiron had me sit down at a table all alone. He said that we eat with our cabin mates and since no one else was in my cabin, I ate all alone. I wasn't the only one though. I noticed that there was this other boy who sat alone. He had black hair, sea foam green eyes, and looked about my age. We held each others gaze for a while, but I looked away because there were some kind of half old woman half chicken animals giving us our food.
I looked at the plate. It had grapes, cheese, bread, and some kind of meat that looked really good. The animal thing gave me a cup, but there was nothing inside it. I looked up at her/ it for help.
"You tell it what drink you want." She said in a raspy voice. I said 'pink lemonade', and sure enough there it was in my cup. everyone started getting up and heading towards the campfire. I stood up and followed them. One girl came up to me and introduced herself.
"Hi, I'm Drew, daughter of Aphrodite."
I love hearing that name. It's so funny when you break it into two words. Aphro dite. I tried not to laugh so hard. She held out her hand. I shook it. They must have been cold, because she drew her hand back (See what I did there? Her name goes with her actions. Haha...ha.....ha........ okay it's not funny.).
"Sorry! I'm just starting to learn how to use my powers, but I'm Terra. Daughter of.."
She interrupted me."Khione. Yeah I heard. Say, your dress is absolutely to die for! Do you think you could make one? In pink?" She seemed to jump to that subject super quick. I knew she was only talking to me because of it. I knew we wouldn't get along well.
"Sorry, I only work in shades of blue and teal." Well, as far as I knew. I said it more mean than I intended to say it and she gave me a look.
"Well see ya later, Frosty."
Great. I just got a new nickname. I rolled my eyes at her satisfied look and ignored her the rest of the way to the campfire. I scraped in most of the cheese, part of the meat, and one grape. I didn't really like cheese, but the rest looked great. I did a silent prayer to my mom.
"I'm not sure if this is how you do it, but Mom. If you're listening please, please help me control my powers and learn how to make friends. I need your help." I said it all in my thoughts and hoped that she had heard me. I walked back to my seat and ate.
Dinner went for a while and then we all went to the Amphitheater. Chiron had told me the schedule and I knew that we were going to sing songs with the Apollo cabin. Yea. (Lot's of sarcasm intended.) Chiron came up to me.
"I'll introduce you to Annabeth now so you don't have to sit alone."
I thanked him and he brought me up to a blonde girl next to the black haired guy that sat all alone. He must have been Percy.
"Annabeth." Chiron called. She turned around and came over, Percy following her.
"What is it Chiron?" She gave me a side glance, her gray eyes filled with caution. She was expecting something bad.
"I'd like to introduce you to Terra Jones, daughter of Khione. Terra, this is the girl I was telling you about. Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena."
We shook hands I tried so hard not to freeze her hand. I must have not, because she didn't pull back her hand in alarm. I saw that she was slightly blushing because of Chiron's remark.
"It's nice to finally meet you Terra, the second to defeat a Minotaur before entering Camp. I saw you use your powers, and let me just tell you, it was amazing." She said so excited.
"Thank you, but who was the first? Nobody has ever told me yet. They say I'll meet him soon, but I have no idea who he is." She starts to laugh a little.
"How convenient. I'd like to introduce you to the first one to destroy a Minotaur before entering Camp and my boyfriend. Percy Jackson, son of Posiedon." Oh my gosh. That was really convenient. We shook hands.
"Nice to meet you Percy." He gives me a smile.
"Nice to meet you too."
Good, he wasn't the type that worried of having their title taken. Chiron cleared his throat. I had forgotten he was there.
"Nice to know you will all get along. I'd like for you two to help out Miss Terra with any questions she has, now lets keep moving." We all walked together towards the Amphitheater.
"So Annabeth." I started.
"Yes?"
"I would need help to plan out my cabin and Chiron said that you would be the one to help me." Her face lit up in excitement.
"I would love too. I love building structures. I'm even helping redesign Olympus after the war."
I gave her a confused look.
"Oh, right. Well, The gods follow Western civilization and so now Olympus is located at the top of the Empire State building. But last year, there was this war where Lord Kronos tried to rise again and nearly destroyed Olympus." That makes sense. She said the last part slowly and sadly.
"Ah." I said.
"We lost a lot of campers, but Percy made a deal with all the gods, including the minor ones, that they have to claim all of their children. So we've been more crowded than ever." She said, trying to brighten up the mood and get Percy talking. He just smiled, and didn't say anything, so she turned back to me.
"So, do you already have plans for your cabin?" A huge smile grew on my face as the plans were drawn into my head again.
"Yes, I have it all planned out." I started going into a very detailed and long explanation of all the details of the cabin to her. She seemed amazed at the thought of making it out of ice.
"But, it would melt during the summer." She pointed out as we sat down together.
"Not unless I use my powers to keep it up. Your forgetting that daughters and sons of Khione will be living there."
"Ah, yes." She smiled.
We went on talking about the construction and ideas for decoration and then leading onto how I'm going to learn how to control my powers from Chiron and onto her life and friends and adventures. Poor Percy was so bored and was about to fall asleep. Annabeth had to shake him awake when the Apollo cabin came up to start the songs.
It was fun in a way, but I'll spare you and not tell you about it.
It came time for us to go to our cabins for sleep, but I didn't have a cabin, so I didn't know where to sleep. I looked for Chiron and saw him wheeling towards the Big House.
"Chiron!" He turned around and gave me that warm smile of his.
"Yes Terra?" He asked when I finally caught up to him.
"I was wondering where I should sleep tonight since I don't have my cabin yet." He thought about it for a while and brushed his hand over his beard.
"I guess you'll have to stay in the Hermes cabin until further notice."
Why Hermes? So I asked him.
"Hermes is the god of travelers, and so we use his cabin to hold all the kids that weren't claimed, but ever since Percy made the promise with the gods it just holds all the Hermes kids. You're going to have to sleep there. Go get your stuff from the infirmary and we'll get you settled in." I had one more question.
"Do I get one of those orange Camp t-shirts?"
"The harpies will leave you one in the morning."
Oh, harpies. Now I remember what those chicken girls are.
"Okay."
I ran off to the infirmary and got all of my stuff. I went to the bathroom and changed into my old clothes that were still in my backpack and put my dress and high heels in the biggest compartment. I hurried back to Chiron while putting my hair in a ponytail and fixing my bangs.
"Is blue your favorite color?" He asked taking in my outfit.
"How'd ya know?" I said super sarcastically and made a face so he could tell I was being sarcastic. He gave a good laugh and took me to the Hermes cabin.
"Now be prepared, Hermes is the god of thieves too. So I suggest you keep your things close and safe." He warned me.
"It's okay, Chiron. I'm a light sleeper. One move towards me and I'm awake." I said reassuringly.
"Yes, but I'm just warning you. The Hermes kids are much more witty than you'd expect them to be." We finally made it to the cabin and everyone was still awake and very loud. It all calmed down when Chiron and I walked in.
"Hermes cabin. This is Terra Jones, daughter of Khione, and she will be staying with you until her cabin is ready for her to move in." I heard groans and cheers. Gladly, it was mostly cheers.
"Goodbye Terra, be careful." He gave me one last warning.
"Don't worry. If someone steps over the line they'll find themselves 'accidentally' frozen to their bed." That remark made him laugh.
"I know I can trust you, Terra, to take care of yourself." I gave him one last smile and turned to the rest of the cabin. Two boys, who must have been twins, came up to me.
They had brown eyes, brown (slightly curly) hair, and elfish features. they were a little taller than me so they had to look down and I had to look up.
"Hey, I'm Travis and this is Connor." The one on the left said. "And we're the Stoll brothers."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Terra." I shook each of their hands and made sure to give them a little chill, just for fun. They got a surprised look on their face and rubbed their hands together to warm them up.
"Nice, now we got ourselves a free air conditioning system." I think it was Connor who said that. I forgot who was who already.
"Yeah, I'll make sure to keep it just below freezing." We chuckled. "Now where will I sleep?"
"Over here." They took me to an empty bunk and I set my backpack down. One of them turned to the rest of the cabin.
"Okay cabin 11! It's time for bed! And leave our guest, and her stuff, alone! The last thing we want is a frozen cabin. Goodnight." The whole cabin gave a groan. I settled down and slept. This was a good first day.
