My Long Awaited Sunshine
by Ma. Alyzee Verna C. Kalaw

In the enchanting land of Okayama lies a quaint town named Decelis. Renowned for the radiant energy exuded by its inhabitants, they are often referred to as rays of sunshine, attributing their cheerful disposition to the splendid weather.

Tourists passing through invariably depart with beaming smiles. However, there's a different narrative for Shion amidst this sunlit community. An individual who embodies the essence of joy, he can often be found near the temple, engaging with children and hand-picking fragrant flowers.

Shion, adored by all, seems to bask in perpetual positivity, yet he harbors a secret known only to him.

One day, while navigating the narrow streets of their village, Shion encountered Akiri, a teenager engrossed in his phone. Though not conventionally intimidating, there was an aura around Akiri that discouraged casual interaction.

"Hey there, stranger!" Shion greeted, but Akiri appeared absorbed in his phone until Shion uttered,

"The weather's great today; I hope someone makes your day a little brighter!" Akiri ceased his activity, struck by a beautiful sentiment seldom heard.

Uncertain of his next move, Akiri contemplated expressing gratitude to the stranger. Battling fear, he yearned for clarification, unsure if the message was intended for him.

Later, fate reunited them, with Shion holding a cup of tea for two. To Akiri's surprise, Shion approached him, offering a seat on the bench. With courage, Akiri greeted, "How are you, stranger?" Shion responded,

"First of all, I have a name; it's Shion. I'm doing well, how about you? Also, what's your name?" extending a cup of tea to Akiri. Intrigued, Akiri shook hands with Shion, introducing himself.

Observing Akiri's earlier demeanor, Shion asked, "I saw you earlier, frowning at your phone. Is there any problem, Akiri?" Accustomed to being overlooked, Akiri was taken aback, expressing,

"Well, it's not a significant issue. More of a personal struggle. I apologize for burdening you with it."

Shion paused and reassured, "You know, Akiri, I don't see that as a problem. We're all human, and we experience challenges. Right now, it just happens to be your turn. Don't worry; in this place, you'll find solace..."

A genuine smile graced Akiri's face. After a prolonged period of solitude, he felt acknowledged and validated.

Grateful for Shion's comforting words, Akiri embraced him, expressing his appreciation. Shion reciprocated, saying, "I'm happy that you are happy now. There are brighter days ahead of us." It was then that Akiri realized he was conversing with the mysterious figure everyone spoke of. Finally, he had met his long-awaited sunshine.
