New Year Taboos and Superstitions
Chinese New Year is a time of celebration, welcome happiness and good luck to continue into the upcoming year. However, since Chinese New Year involves sombre ceremonies, many strict rules and regulations must be followed. Listed below are some common superstitions and taboos that are followed throughout the holiday:
1. Don't wash your hair
In Chinese, the character for hair has a similar pronunciation to a character within the phrase "to get/to be rich" - hence this tradition. People think that if you wash your hair on the first day of the new year, your wealth will be washed away (this is not a good thing at the beginning of the year).
2. Don't say negative things
During the Chinese New Year, the use of words with negative meanings, such as illness, death, emptiness, etc. is prohibited. In most cases, this should be obvious, because you don't want bad things to happen to yourself or bring unfortunate things to yourself and your loved ones around you.
3. Gift Giving
Lunar celebrations are all about giving gifts-but if you choose to give a gift (apart from the usual red envelopes and food), there are a few things you must avoid. Gifts to avoid include: clocks, scissors, and pears as gifts, which are culturally related to death and disappearance.
Although, there are many other taboos and superstitions that are followed (such as not using sharp objects, or avoid crying and fighting) - as many regions have their own unique taboos and superstitions in regards to Chinese New Year, these three mentioned tend to be some of the more widely accepted taboos (and superstitions).
