Prologue

Three years earlier.

Mountains of paper scattered the desk in disarray. Several piles tilted to the side, fearing to fall. Leather books containing company data mixed with 'how to books' on a variety of subjects. They were stacked haphazardly around the room blocking her path. She peered over the papers, looking for the cause of the mess. A warm smirk playfully spread across her small lips at seeing the greasy black mess of hair. He needed a shower, and badly.

She nudged his shoulder while avoiding the papers. He groaned in response, slowly moving his body.

"Good morning sleepy head. Breakfast is ready," she whispered with her free hand stabilizing the papers.

He looked up at her, his eyes blinking rapidly to adjust from his state of slumber. When his haze lifted, they latched onto her completely, shining brilliantly from the mere sight of her. The simple sign—a heartwarming feeling of inexplicable happiness.

Her smile enlarged, showing small dimples. A short giggle escaped behind closed teeth. He responded in turn; a handsome grin with his tousled hair a mess atop his head.

"What's so funny dear?"

She propped her chin on the stack, careful not to knock them over. "Nothing, just happy."

He leaned forward in his chair, brushing his tender lips across hers. She sighed contently from the slight contact. A norm found in her everyday life. Her eyes followed his every movement, as he shifted, pushing back his chair. He got to his feet, a crack sounding from his stiff knees. Ouch, that had to hurt.

She followed suit, straightening her posture and moving to leave before him. Her gleeful mind forgetting the pile of books in front as she walked headlong into it. The books a much stronger force that broke her balance. Her fall towards the floor shortened as an arm wrapped around her waist.

"Careful there."

Recovering her footing, she turned to face him in their hold. She stared up into his bright eyes, a charming smirk lighting up his face.

"Thanks."

"No problem. You know I'll always be there to catch you."

She blushed from his comment. He was the one, and he'd always be her special one. Every action and word, reconfirmed his worth in her heart.
