Chapter 36

Third person pov

Kit is out doing illegal shit when his phone notifies him that the tracking bracelet Tenya now wears everywhere he goes has lost signal.

Listen. It sounds borderline crazy when he puts it like that. It's not like he's making Tenya wear it, or using it to watch his every move. Tenya agreed wholeheartedly to wear it when he started UA and can take it off whenever he so pleases. Not the point right now. Point is: that bracelet is state of the art. It does not simply lose its signal-- or at least, it shouldn't considering how much Kit dished out for the thing.

Being a hero is dangerous shit, even for a student. So Kit figured why not give the love of his life an SOS button? Something happens, Kit'll be able to look up where he is, or last was, and that'll be more to go off of than there might've been before. Had he expected to get any use out of it Tenya's first week of school? No in particular, but whatever. Fuck it.

Crazy shit happens to them all the time. This is just another one of those crazy as shit things, that's all. Tenya will be fine, and if he isn't Kit will burn the world to the ground and piss on the ashes. It's all very simple. Not so simple that he's going to ignore it, of course, so if Dabi could hike up his proverbial man dress and hurry the hell up, that would be much appreciated.

Kit's vigilante disguise isn't a disguise at all, really. Rei is doing leagues better than him, with a face mask around her eyes and a scarf covering her lower mouth. Dabi's a piece of patchwork nobody's going to give a damn about, so he gets a free pass. And Kit-- well, his idea of a 'vigilante costume' is a powder blue medical mask and a pair of way-to-expensive sunglasses, of which there are only about a hundred pairs in existence globally.

"You're a fucking moron." Dabi griped out, arms crossed firm over his chest. "Just because his stalker bracelet isn't reporting to the mothership you think he's in danger? You're verging into obsessive territory."

Kit wasn't just verging into obsessive territory. He had completely swerved into the other lane and was living and breathing it. And you know the fuck what? He would not have that shit a singular other way. And he's willing to bet Tenya wouldn't either, so Dabi can take a step back, butt the fuck out, and go back to crushing on a guy in a coma for all Kit cares.

"Touya, be nice." Rei chided, because she is an angel sent by the lord. Clasp your hands, bow your head, say your thanks. Amen. "He has every right to be concerned, especially considering Iida's left campus. It won't hurt anyone to go check in and make sure everything's alright. We can do so from a distance, can't we?"

Not to mention the uncomfortable coil in Kit's gut that has persisted since the early hours of this morning. He'd thought it was the Chinese leftovers he'd eaten for breakfast disagreeing with him, but now Kit's not so sure. He's pretty sure this is one of those tedious gut feelings. And you know the fuck what? In Kit's experience, those are hardly ever wrong.

So, plan! They roll up in disguise. Scope out the area in search of anything wrong, maybe try to figure out why the bracelet is offline before they leave, and that'll be that. If something's up, they'll deal with it. If something's not up, they'll dip and that'll be that. Tenya will surely appreciate the sentiment. What the fuck's the point of the bracelet if they don't use it, anyway?

"Consider it a side quest, bacon bits." Kit clapped Dabi on the back, earning himself a disgusted look for his troubles. Homophobic of him, but had he really expected anything different? Loser. "Now hop in so we can hop to. I'm driving!"

"It's illegal to drive without shoes." Dabi spat out as Rei happily floated her way to the passenger side. Dabi then paused, looking down at Kit skeptically. Kit peered down at his feet and damn, his shoes were gone. He wondered if duct taping them to his feet would do anything. It hadn't the last four times he tried, but fifth time was the charm, right? "Do you even know how to drive that thing?"

"Right pedal means go, left pedal means stop, helm steers the ship, fancy handle in the middle does all the other shit." Kit threw the driver side door open, half so they could get a move on, half to hide the growing unease tickling his spine. Dabi made a face stuck somewhere between terror and disappointment. "Oh! And this here makes the middle finger sound!"

He slapped his hand down on the horn, hard and long. At least it got Dabi moving.

The good news? They've pretty clearly found Denise-- or maybe he found them? That part's still up in the air. The bad news? The villains have him and are clearly going to try and use him to murder them, which is like... not something anyone wants to happen for what Iida likes to think are pretty obvious reasons.

The USJ seems to fall ominously silent at Izuku's joyous shout, but the freckled boy doesn't pay the lack of sound any mind. Not even when Aizawa turns to stare at him incredulously. Their classmates are a mixture of flabbergasted and bewildered, but that's not what's important right now. Denise is down there! Actually, really down there!

Their running theory about him getting abducted had been flimsy at best, because he's a little (read: a lot) hideous and who in their right mind would ever try to take him? Tenya can see now that he'd been too narrowminded in his own assumptions that nobody would want Denise. Of course Villains would seek to use him for their wrongdoings, as terrifying as he is! He's strong, scary, and great for intimidation factor with the exposed brain and bulging eyes.

"Absolutely. Not." Aizawa ground the words out between clenched teeth, gaze set on Izuku's brightened expression. Where the rest of 1-A shifted with unease, the freckled teen was practically vibrating, eyes set on Denise's form down in the plaza. Tenya was honestly surprised his friend hadn't taken off yet. "You all need to get out of here. I'll hold them off--"

"Mr. Aizawa, that's our... uh, friend. He was abducted some time ago, and we've been looking for him ever since. If he is here, it is likely not of how own volition." Tenya cut in, which was just... unthinkable. Tenya Iida, interrupting a teacher. If it weren't such a tense situation, Tenya may've fallen to his knees and started to hyperventilate. However, a hero must stay level-headed in all scenarios, and this is the perfect time to get his steps in.

Mr. Aizawa did not seem to share the sentiment, staring unamused, not at all impressed. Tenya liked to think his unwavering loyalty to the odd, silent friendship he and Denise have built together is something to write home about, but he supposes not everyone might agree. Kit and Izuku are both closer to the-- uh... man? creature-- than he is. He understands.

Aizawa looks like he can't figure out who they're talking about when they say Denise, eyes scanning the crowd for anyone who looks like a hostage. Should Tenya say something? Maybe not. Even if he does accidentally attack Denise, it would be fine. Denise was incredibly durable. To eat table lamps and kitchen appliances you would certainly have to be.

"That's something that can be addressed later. After this... if we survive." Aizawa grimaced, eyes shifting back to the villains still filtering into the USJ. Kaminari was frantically trying to use his com to make contact with the school to no avail. Momo had also created a radio. It wasn't picking up signal, but that only convinced Tenya all the more that Kit would show up. "Now take your classmates and go. Get to safety!"

Aizawa punctuated his demand by launching himself down the stairs like it was absolutely nothing, capture weapon whipping after him as it swiftly unraveled, hovering around him like it had a life of its own. Several of their classmates shouted after him. It was all very dramatic. A little epic, especially when Mr. Aizawa flipped midair and jackhammered his foot down into the face of an unsuspecting villain who'd been stalking their way towards the unnecessarily long staircase.

It was awe-inspiring. Eraserhead was an ambush type of hero. He did best in one-on-one fights and relied on stealth, working most efficiently in the dark, traversing tight alleyways and skinny backroads. Seeing him leap in without hesitation and completely decimate several of the villains with seemingly little effort was a striking reminder of why UA was considered the best in the business.

Denise didn't move, stood next to what seemed like the main villain, even if he looked like an unassuming e-boy with skin problems. Just to their left, the air started to warp and shift. The pressure around them rose, a warning to what was to come. The beginnings of black swirled in, purple around the edges. The same thing that had dumped all the villains here to begin with.

"You heard him! Everyone get back!" Thirteen called out, voice muffled by their helmet. "Midoriya, Iida, you too! Get behind me!"

Izuku and Tenya turned to look at the pro, not moving. Then at the forming villain. Then down at Denise. Then, they looked at each other, meeting one another's eyes for just a beat. The world seemed to stop spinning for a moment. Neither of them moved, or breathed, hell, Tenya wasn't even sure he was thinking.

Denise had been taken from Midoriya's house. And Denise-- whoever or whatever he was, he was their friend. They've been looking for him tirelessly. Kit's been losing sleep, anxious even if he doesn't show it, worried beneath the surface of it all. A constant rippling of nerves and frustration, because none of them could figure out where Denise had gone.

And now he was finally here. So Izuku and Tenya did the only thing they could possibly think of in this instance.

They shared another look, blinked at one another in a manner almost astonished, and then promptly took off down the stairs before the warp gate villain or Thirteen could think to stop them. Two steps at a time, Tenya's engines humming, Izuku's skin beginning to crackle with the beginnings of something that hopefully wouldn't break every bone in his body. Attention set on Denise, who stood stationary as ever, just as clueless as he'd always been.

The armored villain at the outskirts of the group never saw Tenya coming. He sure felt when he arrived, though. Tenya decided not to think too hard about the cracking noise.

~~~~~~~
"I fucking hate when you're right." Dabi grimaced at the USJ, which was on the outskirts of the prefecture, away from civilization. Bouts of shrieking and the sounds of an unnatural commotion were emerging from the massive glass dome, and the doors were locked shut tight, not giving into the efforts Kit put in to open them. He could heard faint, frantic voices talking on the other side, but the door didn't budge.
"Which is always. God, how do you live with yourself? You must get tired feeling such rage all the time." Kit gave the door another tug, and then a firm push, frowning. "Ugh. Alright, they're clearly getting attacked or some shit, but no way do we bust this open without sending some terrified niños flying. Think we can be badass, go through the roof?"
Dabi mouthed 'niños' whilst squinting as Rei took a step back, pursing her lips in a considering sort of way to peer at the gargantuan structure. They were quite the trio. Kit looked suspicious as fuck. He was going to need to do better than a regular old medical mask. Maybe he could get a Louis Vuitton one or something. Or Gucci. Or fuck, maybe he'd make his own line of masks. Or would that be too obvious?
He knows he told Tenya no more vigilante funny business! Or at least, none that's dangerous. But this is a rescue mission! He's already shot Tensei a text to let him know to alert the cavalry. Hopefully he took it seriously. And if not, all of 1-A has the grounds to sue. That's tuition right there. A win-win! One with more trauma than the other, yeah, but that builds character.
There was a rattling boom from in the USJ that had Kit's nose scrunching up. Dabi made another face, but that's nothing new. Ugh. Count on Tenya to go get attacked his first week of school. It's probably because he's so hot. No way can you look that good and not have bad shit happen to you to make up for it.
"I think a dramatic roof entrance is in order." Rei seemed to decide after a moment longer of surveillance. Dabi groaned into his hands, sounding like a tortured soul in hell. Good. If anyone deserves it, it's him. "Besides, my son is in there. I would rather they not try to kill him."
Dabi's dramatic groans cut off rather suddenly. He lowered his hands from his face, blinking rapidly.
"Oh, shit. I forgot about Shoto." He realized, now looking distinctly alarmed. "Fuck, hurry up. Let's go."
"What, so Tenya and Izuku are just chopped liver then? I'm cutting your pay, you shriveled up ass." Kit flipped him off as Rei's hands began to emit a frost. She glanced at the ground and then up at the dome, frowning and clearly trying to figure out how best to do this. Though she'd been doing vigilante work here and there, this was the first time she'd be using her quirk on this large a scale in years. Kit had all the faith in the world in her.
Before Dabi could open his mouth to say something stupid enough to kill the brain cells of everyone within a ten mile radius of him, ice erupted up under them, forming crystalline and slick. Kit shifted his weight and somehow managed not to go flying off. Probably because he is the baddest bitch, aside from Rei, in the entire goddamn world. Dabi immediately started to shriek like the pansy he was, scrambling for purchase.
There was a heart stopping moment in which the ice arced and sent them airborne, nothing beneath their feet. Just them in the open air, plummeting towards the top of the dome. Kit shoved his sunglasses back up his nose as they sailed, brows raising over the tops as Rei threw her hands out. The sound of glass shattering drowned out Dabi's screams.
Hopefully none of those shards would fall on anyone important. Better than them blasting half of Tenya's classmates away from the door, and possibly Tenya himself. The impact onto Rei's ice slide was a hard jostle that Kit took with grace. Dabi spun ahead of him, limbs star fished out because he's an absolute moron. Rei's ice raced to keep up with the scarred man's rapid plummeting.
It all happened a lot quicker than it sounds. Heads turned as they spiraled towards the plaza. It was an impressive facility. Kit's eyes found Tenya almost magnetically, where he and Izuku were huddled with their teacher... right next to Denise. Kit almost reached up to take his sunglasses off just to see if he was seeing things, but then Rei gasped, and that was enough to tell him it was real.
"Socks!" Rei's use of his media-given vigilante name made his lips curl behind his mask, which was honestly not couture at all. "Plan?!"
"Fuck shit up, kick ass, and save the day!" Kit hollered as they rapidly approached the ground. "And don't let Dabi set anyone of worth on fire, if you would!"
Rei beamed and gave a salute, dyed brown hair whipping like a flag behind her. Kit felt his grin grow. He saluted back with as much flourish as one could have going at as high a speed as he was-- which was a lot more than most considering he's Kit Suzuko, the hottest thing since goddamn buttered baked potatoes.
And without further ado, Kit dove off the ice slide, flipping through the air, shoeless as the day he was fucking born. The look on Tenya's face told him he was going to get his ass beat later. He couldn't find it in himself to do anything but laugh as he descended into the crowd of villains, spring boarding off the first one available and flipping through the air anew.
Behind him, a wall of ice went up, spikes of frost jutting up through the crowd. A wave of fire flared somewhere to his right. Kit's laughter was more than a little unhinged at that.
~~~~~~

"NOMU!" Shigaraki shrieks, full of fiery rage and a fair amount of frustration. The latter, at least, was relatable. This was horrible. "KILL HIM!"

Aizawa was breathing hard but he still kept form, crouched low and with his weapon at the ready. His clothes were sweat soaked and so was his hair, darker at the roots with moisture. Blood was dripping from his elbow where Shigaraki had grabbed him moments prior. It's a grotesque wound, all running red and exposed muscle. It bleeds fast, worse because it's a joint the man continues to flex, not appearing to care for the pain in the slightest.

Izuku and Tenya are breathing hard. They'd just barely managed to break through the crowd to their teacher, Izuku with a broken hand and Tenya with exhaust pipes hot enough to burn the skin around them. Turns out they're not all that built for fighting large groups either. In fact, one could even argue that they're not built for fighting at all, being in their first week of school and all.

Shigaraki thrust a finger at their teacher. Izuku and Tenya both watched in horror as Denise turned to Eraserhead. Denise didn't look all that fazed by the order. That being said, Denise didn't seem fazed by much in general, so maybe that wasn't saying much. If only he had eyebrows. That would tell them so much more about what he was thinking.

Denise moved fast. Like, blink and he's gone fast. Tenya's eyes widened in horror as Denise's hulking form appeared in front of their already-exhausted teacher, whose quirk flared to life expectantly. But that sort of thing wouldn't work on Denise. For as little as they knew about his abilities, Tenya knew that much to be true.

"No!" Tenya bellowed as Denise's fist reared back. Izuku let out a shriek nearly high enough to pierce his eardrums. The sentiment was shared.

"Denise, stop!" Izuku shrilled out in a panic, already scrambling towards them, quirk sparking just slightly beneath his skin. His ankle had rolled at some point, and Tenya pulled the freckled teen's arm over his shoulder in support, hunched awkwardly to accommodate the height difference as they scrabbled their way over. "No! No, no!"

And Denise, miraculously enough, actually stops. Aizawa skids back, glowing red eyes wide. Denise turns towards them and makes a noise of apparent delight, cocking his head. Tenya could cry he's so relieved. He's not sure why he thought he'd punch Mr. Aizawa anyway, but he's glad he didn't. He never should've let his faith in him waver.

Aizawa's quirk drops when he sees Denise's lax stance, confusion coloring his expression as Tenya and Izuku nearly fall over on their way over to him. Denise stands there, head cocked happily. If he had a tail, Tenya is certain it would be wagging. He feels a rush of warmth flood through him, terribly out of place in the face of all his panic and fearful adrenaline. Denise is okay, and he remembers them.

Mr. Aizawa clearly wants to ask what the fuck they're doing down here, but Tenya is quite sure he's realized by now that escaping didn't pan out. If it had, help would've arrived by now, and they'd all be on their way to getting adequate medical attention. He scowls a little instead, eyes shifting between them and Denise, realization slowly bleeding its way into his expression.

"...This is Denise?" Mr. Aizawa asks, utterly disbelieving. Izuku chokes out a sob and throws his arms around the creature, blubbering. Denise lets out a rumbling noise akin to a purr. Tenya's face scrunches. He reaches over awkwardly to give Denise a pat on the arm. Whether the creature appreciates it or not is lost to him.

"We are very glad to see him safe." Tenya says in all seriousness, as though Denise didn't almost kill Aizawa in cold blood. Even Shigaraki is too stunned to say anything, standing a ways away, jaw a little dropped as Izuku hugs Denise tight enough to lift the creature briefly up off its feet. Tenya gives Denise a stern look. "Denise, I understand that we did not cover the concept of stranger danger, but do not listen to anything that man says. He is bad, and he wants you to do bad things. You know better than to do bad things."

He says it in as simple terms as he can without cutting corners. Aizawa seems like he's hardly processing the fact that this is their missing friend. To be fair, the name truly does not fit. But if Denise likes it, that's all that matters.

Denise stares at him, but Tenya is pretty sure he's gotten it. Aizawa looks tired. And he's bleeding quite a bit, which is incredibly concerning in Tenya's opinion. They should definitely get that checked out. Is he going to bleed out? The human body does not have nearly as much blood as one would assume, and their teacher has lost a vast supply of his own.

Izuku continues to blubber. In a shocking display of actual empathy and emotion, Denise reached a large palm up to pat him roughly on the head. Aizawa dragged the hand not attached to his injured arm down his face, seeming to struggle with what to say as Izuku sniffled and pulled himself away from Denise. The teen wiped at his eyes furiously.

"N...Nomu..." Shigaraki growled with even more anger than before, red eyes wide from behind his stringy bangs. His hair was incredibly dry. If Kit were here, he would--

The sound of glass shattering stopped Shigaraki from saying another word. Tenya whirled on his heel, immediately blanching. He would know those shrieks of terror anywhere.

Tenya wasn't sure if Kit's maniacal laughter was welcome or not. Watching him flip off of an ice slide and plummet almost fifteen feet into a crowd of tired villains, he couldn't decide for certain. All he knew was that they were all going to get out of here alive. And right now, perhaps that was all that mattered.
