Chapter 32
Third person pov
It was the day of the entrance exam, and there were still no signs of Denise.
Tenya crashed through robots left and right, mind somehow managing to stay solely on his boyfriend as he did so. Kit had truly been beginning to feel it, even if the difference in him was quite subtle. It still made Tenya feel incredibly uneasy to see his boyfriend in such a state. Kit strove to be as put-together as possible, and he succeeded, always holding amazing bouts of confidence in himself regardless of the situation. He knew his worth and treated himself with as much care as he felt he deserved, as he should. His self-assuredness was one of the things Tenya loved most about him.
Izuku sometimes argued that the brunette woke up without a single hair out of place-- that he always looked good no matter what, somehow. Tenya was inclined to agree. Kit looked pretty from every angle, at all times, and took great pride in such a fact. And whilst he was certainly still pretty despite the ongoing stress, (you can trust Tenya's opinion on this one, even if it is biased, it's still an undisputable fact), you could tell he was beginning to lose some of his usual steam. He was far from giving up, but dead-end after dead-end would have anyone's hopes dimming. He was pouring more of himself into finding out just what happened to Denise and not enough of himself into his own care. It was very worrying!
Tenya frowned, leg slamming into the head of yet another two-pointer. He knew his mind should be on the exam-- this was important, his one shot to get into UA High! He just... he couldn't help his worry, you know? He knew Tensei was staying with Kit today to keep him company and try to hunt down more on what had happened to Denise, but that did little very little to reassure Tenya, who was an expert at fretting over others. Especially Kit. It was hard to see at first, but Kit cared a lot for the people around him, and he'd run himself into the ground for those he cared about. Tenya had only seen it in small increments-- never to this degree, but he wasn't surprised.
Nowadays, you could see the bags under Kit's eyes. They were faint, but undoubtedly there. He was a little paler than usual, his hair noticeably flatter when you looked at it long enough, and not as shiny. Tenya was probably the only one to really notice. His attention gravitated unconsciously towards Kit. Overall, the brunette teen was actually doing much better than the rest of them. Izuku looked like he may've genuinely been hit head-on with a wrecking ball. The bags under Kit's eyes were menial compared to his. Izuku's entire face looked like a shriveled up piece of fruit. Actually, now that Tenya thought about it, when was the last time the freckled teen had eaten or drank anything?
Speaking of which, he hadn't seen Izuku for a while now. It was by sheer coincidence that they got placed in the same testing area. They'd both shared a look and silent mutual agreement to split up and work separately. Izuku was grimmer these days, the pain of not-knowing nagging at him most of all. You could see it in his appearance, his hair messier, his clothes askew, and a wild look in his eyes that told everyone around him just how hungry the boy was for answers. He'd grown attached to Denise. It made sense, seeing as the creature had stayed primarily at his apartment. Tenya wondered how Inko Midoriya was dealing with it all.
Tenya was... okay, all things considered. He'd slacked a bit on his hair the past couple days, but seeing as it was the day of the exams, he had made a great effort to get himself back into tip-top shape this morning. He'd perfected his posture, spine straightened precisely, and made sure his shoulders were set back and firm. Izuku had left earlier in the morning to go talk to All Might and, according to Kit, 'cry in his arms... or whatever he did with the Number One Pro these days'. Tenya had admittedly snorted a bit. His humor was crasser these days due to Kit, but he didn't think that was a bad thing. How could anything about Kit truly be bad? Aside from his tendency to get into difficult situations in alleyways, but that was a critique borne out of concern.
The ground rumbled precariously all of a sudden, drawing Tenya away from his thoughts and towards the massive robot wheeling its way towards them. Sort of. Okay, maybe he was still thinking about it. Denise was a three-hundred pound block of brainless muscle! Surely someone would've spotted him by now, right? Kit was ever the Twitter guru, and he had reported absolutely nothing about it. No matter how hard he looked or how deep he dug, there were simply no sightings. Not there or on any other social medias, which Izuku had done thorough scans of. Did that mean Denise had been taken?
"Th-That's the zero pointer?!" Someone shrieked, sounding absolutely terrified. Tenya blinked, nonplussed by the massive machine. He didn't run for the gates like the rest of the other examinees. The robot really wasn't moving that fast, after all. And if it did speed up, Tenya still had plenty of fuel left in his engines. Whatever. Besides that though, who on god's green earth would ever want to take Denise? If they had, had it been of their own free will? Unless some other, eccentric, gay millionaire with no sense of danger had found him in an alleyway. Tenya somehow doubted those were in high supply around here. Would Denise let that happen?
Kit had asked him to cosplay as Endeavor and he didn't even ask. He never asked, actually. Tenya pursed his lips, feeling dazed as he walked. Did he have enough points to pass? He felt exhausted. He knew he'd aced the tests of academic intelligence just fine. He and Izuku had both studied their hearts out and he'd torn through the questions, even with how out-of-focus he was today. Hm... Denise did have a tendency to listen to anything they told him. Without hesitation. There wasn't a single thought behind those beady, soulless eyes of his... wow, Tenya was more attached than he'd presumed! Perhaps not as much as Kit and Izuku, who'd found the creature, but he still felt a pang thinking of him out there, too stupid to understand what was happening. Was that too crass of him? He was operating on very little sleep here.
Tenya was positive Kit had thought of all this before. Literally, he was positive-- Kit had told him all his theories. The working one was kidnapping. Or abduction, rather. Well, actually, how did they know Denise was an adult? Sure he was big, but he had so little sense of self that one could argue he was no smarter than a potato spud that was being used as a battery. He was like a really large infant. One that... wait, had they ever seen Denise eat any actual food? Aside from that entire casserole, dish and all, he only ever seemed to devour appliances. Tenya guessed that meant he probably wouldn't starve if he had somehow wandered away on his own. He somehow doubted that had been the case, however. Denise was known to stand in one place and not move unless you told him to.
"Wait! Look, someone is stuck!" Someone called out, voice full of terror. Tenya was still too distracted by his own dwellings to bother turning around.
On the topic of Denise eating, had the creature ever used the bathroom? Where did all go? There was no way it all just fit in there. Tenya had watched the thing devour an entire, standing lamp once. It had taken him about ten seconds to get the entire thing down and he'd burped after. That implied the presence of a stomach, so that stuff had to come out at some point, didn't it? Maybe it was a quirk thing. He could be converting the things he ate into super strength. Tenya supposed the workings didn't actually matter. Finding him did.
"Holy shit, she's going to get crushed!" Someone else cried out, right next to him. Tenya hummed a bit, squinting at the asphalt as he shuffled after the rest of the panicked group of examinees.
What was Kit doing right now? Had he eaten yet? Tenya was going to head straight home after this. He'd text first, but Kit was notoriously bad for checking his phone when he got into the groove of things. If he was in the middle of something, he was all in. It was another thing Tenya loved about him. It meant he oftentimes got Kit's undivided attention. He could really use some of that right now. He just felt... tired. Today had been a long day, after all. Izuku had stayed over, and then had woken up three hours too early to start hyperventilating. Something about getting a quirk from All Might or whatever? Kit and Tenya had just told him to shut up and had gone back to snuggling.
"Shit, what is that guy doing?! Is he insane?!" Someone shrieked. Tenya sidestepped around them, still not paying much attention.
He wished Kit would go to UA too. They could all eat lunch together, since all the first years ate with one another. Kit was so painstakingly smart. His intelligence was attractive, but it also hurt. Kit could just do things! He could've aced these exams, and he probably would've figured out a way to rig the physical if he were here, too. He understood Kit's desire to focus on the company. He just missed him. Perhaps he was being too selfish. Kit had his own ambitions and couldn't coddle Tenya all the time. Tenya just liked it when they were together, that's all.
"It's that green haired kid who hasn't used his quirk! What is he thinking?! He's going to get himself killed!" A girl shrilled.
He wondered if Kit would kiss him for doing a good job on his exam. Maybe he should've tried harder to focus. He was sure he'd gotten plenty of points to pass, but what if he could've done better? He'd been training rigorously for the past year, and to think he'd come in here half in a daze and hadn't given it his all. It was borderline shamefu-- wait, a green haired kid who hasn't used his quirk!?
Tenya whipped around just in time to see Izuku fly through the air, legs visibly broken even from this distance, arm drawn back. His jaw dropped as his friend's fist flew forward with a shout audible to everyone present, the explosive power slamming into the machine's head and sending it flying back with incredible force. The air seemed to rattle from the sheer power exerted. Tenya felt his heart skip a few beats, his eyes wide. His glasses slipped precariously down the slope of his nose, his disbelief evident as Izuku began to plummet at alarming rate, three of his four limbs out of commission. It was completely unreal. Was this actually happening? He was pretty sure it was actually happening.
Tenya's not usually one to curse, but as the girl Izuku had saved reached out to deliver a slap to his cheek, the only thing he could bring himself to think was... oh, shit.

If you'd told Dabi a few months ago that he'd be in a back alley fight with an irritating teenage millionaire and his own mother, he'd have called you batshit crazy and went about his day. If only reality were so logical. Because he is, in fact, in a back alley fight with an irritating teenage millionaire and his own mother. Their enemy is a small platoon of villains who seem to think they're stronger than they actually are. How they got into this situation is beyond him. His mother is surprisingly calm considering the circumstance, and Kit is being downright casual.
"Shit! I guess we're vigilantes now." Kit chirped out, cracking his bloody knuckles and then his neck. Dabi blanched when his mother nodded in agreement, smiling pleasantly. As though this were a simple evening stroll, and not a life-or-death situation. Not that Dabi was going to let anything happen to either of them, but the point stood that they were backed into a corner. They'd been here to ask questions about Denise, but then suddenly Kit was getting punched, and then he was punching back, and now here they were. "Rei, what would you like your vigilante name to be?"
The woman seemed to consider it for a moment, humming. Dabi felt a bit of fondness well up despite himself. This entire goddamn scenario was insane, but at least his mom was having fun. He loved seeing her out and about, truly able to enjoy herself. Kit had given her something Dabi was never able to. Still, he wished the annoying brat hadn't wrapped her up in all this Denise business. He was just as curious about where the creature had vanished to as the next guy, but taking to the streets for answers was a little much.
"Well... how about Endeavor?" Rei asked in a tone way too sweet for the suggestion, and Kit burst out laughing the instant it escaped her lips. Dabi's lips parted in surprise, and he watched his mom give an innocent smile and shrug. "It has a nice ring to it! It's a great way to make him angry and to reclaim the name, don't you think? Touya, dear?"
"Oh my fucking god." Dabi muttered under his breath, shaking his head. The villains that were waiting to kill them watched on with varying degrees of perplexity as Kit went through a knee-slapping moment of hysterics. Dabi just massaged his temples as his mom turned to him, smiling in an amused sort of way. He was beginning to see that though he loved his mother endlessly, he really knew nothing about her. He wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing.
Rei didn't see the issue. She'd been impossibly excited when Kit asked if she wanted to come sleuth around some shady parts to try and get information on Denise. So far they hadn't run into anyone who knew what they were talking about, but they certainly weren't going to give up. It was a good distraction to keep her mind off her other children. She wanted to reach out to them more than anything-- Shoto most of all-- but knew it wasn't time yet. She dared not jeopardize Kit's plot. It would all come to fruition soon! She was patient in the hospital, and she could be patient now.
"This is great! Fuck, okay. You guys," Kit pointed at the villains as his laughter died down into what could be better described as unhinged giggling. The group of assorted men and women jumped slightly, fighting positions resumed. "This is the vigilante Endeavor. I'm... let's see... you guys are creative, right? You can decide for me. And this ugly mug is Dabi."
Dabi shot him a withering glare, not at all amused by whatever was going on right now. They were out here to find out what happened to whatever the fuck Denise was, not publicly commit to a life of vigilantism. Since when had he even signed up for this? He'd just come along since his shit bag sperm donor was still on the prowl, and there was no way he was letting his mother go anywhere knowing that. What's worse was he couldn't even cremate these guys. His mom would be affronted and Kit would surely fire him, which meant they'd have to leave them alive. What a pain.
"Don't listen to him, dear." Rei said soothingly, putting a reassuring hand on her son's arm and drawing him from his train of thought. "I think you're very handsome!"
She then proceeded to thrust her hand out towards the enemy and send a wave of ice skirting across the asphalt at a startling speed, trapping two third of their enemies and effectively causing the rest to slip and fall on their asses. Kit cackled as the chaos began, stepping onto the ice in fucking socks, and skating into the thick of it. Rei smiled and gracefully followed after him, pulling her dyed brown hair up in a bun to keep it out of her face. Dabi watched pale-faced as his mother ducked under a chunk of stone sent for her head, her expression unwavering. He gulped.
Later, Tenya would find himself waiting for Izuku to wake up in UA's infirmary only to check his phone and find that the news had blown up with a hot new story. A notorious group of Musutafu villains known for their serial house invasions had been caught by three new vigilantes, who had debuted just today. A man with a fire quirk going by Dabi, and brunette woman who could cast ice calling herself Endeavor, and a teenage boy who had allegedly stabbed seven people. He hadn't given a vigilante title, but the media had decided upon one after hearing the reports of the encounter.
They were calling him Socks, for his lack of shoes. Tenya yanked the pillow out from under Izuku's head, brought it up to his face, and screamed.
