Chapter 28
Third person pov
Shoto had thought he was hallucinating when he first heard whispered voices outside his door. It wasn't uncommon that he found himself unable to sleep at four AM. Normally he'd simply lay there in complete silence, either until he drifted back to sleep or his alarm went off. Never had he found himself questioning whether or not he had developed some form of schizophrenia. In all his life, never had they experienced a break in. Not only was the location of their home kept under tight wraps, tucked away in a subtle area not easily accessed, but what idiot was going to break into the Number Two hero's home? Anyone who did had to have a death wish. Getting burned alive didn't seem like a pleasant way to go.
Yet, there was undoubtedly a couple of strangers in the hallway. Right outside his bedroom, arguing in hushed tones. Shoto had already sat up and was now contemplating what to do. Calling the police seemed like the logical option, but his father would never forgive him. It would be an 'embarrassment' to have to call the cops for something so 'trivial'. That being said, waking up Endeavor was one of the very first things on the very long list of shit he really didn't want to do anytime soon. Thus, all he could really bring himself to do was sit and wait. He could freeze the trespassers as a worst case scenario. If they managed to get away with stealing from Endeavor without being caught, he'd actually feel a little smug, honestly.
It was an odd train of thought to have. What sane person would just sit there and listen whilst strangers tromped around their home? It didn't seem horribly heroic of Shoto. Did he even want to be a hero? It was a great question. He felt like he did, but not the kind his father wanted him to be. He didn't want to do it for the fame. He wanted to save people just to save them, no strings attached. The popularity was nothing. Shoto could even say he'd prefer to avoid it, if possible.
The whispering got closer. It definitely wasn't Natsuo, nor was it Fuyumi. He strained his ears to try and hear what they were saying. It sounded like they weren't even trying to be quiet, despite the hushed talking. One of them sounded like they had bricks for feet, their footfalls practically making the floor vibrate. He inched closer to the edge of his tatami bed, leaning forward.
"Izuku, shut the fuck up!" A voice hissed out. Shoto barely picked it up. "You sound like an obese elephant when you walk."
"At least I'm wearing shoes. Who breaks into the Number Two Hero's house with socks on?" Another voice-- presumably Izuku-- bit back. Shoto blinked. They didn't sound particularly malicious. Their banter seemed almost playful, actually. "I'm going to tell Tenya we're doing this."
"You'd be throwing yourself under the bus too, you petty fucking snitch." The other voice replied, sounding perhaps a tad bit scared. "Let's just get this shit over with. We're already here a-"
Shoto didn't even flinch as his door flew open, an unexpectedly short figure freezing when his red eyes met Shoto's mismatched one. The half-and-half teen stared at the boy who had to be his age, if not a little younger. It was hard to tell in such low lighting. Clearly, he hadn't expected to run into someone actually awake. Quite the weak assumption considering how loud they were being. It was a miracle his dad's room was across the house. They definitely would've drawn him from his slumber. He'd wake up at the drop of a pin. It's the main reason he slept on the opposite side of their home.
Another head popped into view. Wild, curly green hair, freckles, and eyes so bright they almost seemed to glow. He also seemed young. Shoto blinked a few times, still unsure of what to do or say. They didn't seem like the typical robbers. Not that he had anything to compare it to. He took in their appearance, still wondering if he should be freezing their feet to the ground. What would he do after that if he did? Calling the police would get him in trouble, and waking up his father would inevitably lead to him getting lectured one way or another. Was it worth it if they weren't even going to attack? They could take whatever they wanted and he wasn't going to care.
"U-Uh." The green haired boy sputtered out. Shoto cocked his head. He'd think that they'd be more confident if they were bold enough to break in like this. "We were just leaving."
Shoto nodded in understanding. The red-eyed boy grinned. Shoto wondered if this was what it was like to be a fish cornered by a shark. He got the distinct impression that this was less about robbery and more about... something else. What that something was, he wasn't sure. He couldn't deny being curious. And perhaps a tad bit intimidated, but he wasn't going to admit that out loud.
"Kittrick Suzuko and Izuku Midoriya, at your service." The boy bowed with flourish. The freckled boy with him looked like he might cry. Shoto could get that. "Here's a business card. Have you ever thought about modeling? Because you know where to find me if so."
Shoto barely reacted fast enough to catch the card that flew at his face. A lollipop was attached to it, yellow with a black smiley face printed on it. He blinked down at it. Did robbers usually introduce themselves and offer candy? Again, this did not seem like a traditional break in. They didn't appear armed, nor had they seemed to have stolen anything yet. Not only that, but they weren't all that thuggish. There had to be something else they were after. Endeavor, like any top pro, had his fair share of enemies. Possibly even more due to his brash and violent nature.
"Kit!" Izuku hissed out, smacking him on the arm as Shoto inspected the card. "Why would you tell him our names?!"
"Call it a trust building exercise." Kit waved a hand dismissively. "Say, where's your shithead dad's office?"
When he said it like that, Shoto couldn't not tell him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You said your name was Kittrick Suzuko?" The nurse at the station asked nervously. Kit beamed. The woman's eyes drifted up to the figure standing next to him. "And this is... Endeavor-san, then?"
Okay, so the plan wasn't legal, or fool-proof, or rational. Going through the court system could ruin the project and expose them! Not to mention it would take forever and possibly not even work. This was a far, far more effective method. Kit couldn't believe he hadn't thought of it before! Tenya would've tried to stop him if he knew, but alas, he was skipping school for that very purpose. He had no interest in UA, and as high as his grades were, he was find to miss a day. He was sure Tenya had to be blowing up his phone in absolute rage right now, but there was nothing his hunk of a boyfriend could prove. By the time he figured things out, it would be too late! So long as Izuku kept his trap shut.
Natsuo had given them Todoroki Enji's address. He hadn't realized they were going to break in, but to be fair, Kit hadn't either. It had been a spur of the moment decision that had him throwing rocks at Izuku's window at an ungodly hour. Izuku had agreed anyway! Naturally, since Kit is a genius. They'd gone in knowing what they needed and come out triumphant and having left a (hopefully) great impression on Shoto. He hadn't ratted them out, at least. Seemingly. If what Natsuo had told them was true, Shoto would be heavily inclined not to tell their father jack shit. Kit didn't feel too worried.
Back to the current issue at hand. You see, Denise had a build and height nearly identical to Endeavor's. It was perfect! Denise was pretty much the Midoriya's oversized house cat at this point. If that. All he did was stand around and act fairly useless. He was great intimidation. Inko had been trying to teach him how to better talk and communicate. He followed the orders he was given so long as he liked the person enough, which made him great protection. Kit just hoped he could pull off his acting job. Inko had seemed fairly confident in his abilities. Honestly, she was such an enabler. He loved it. With Denise and the items they'd gathered from Todoroki household, there was no way they weren't getting away with this!
"You heard me." Kit snarked. He elbowed Denise. "Right, Endeavor?"
"Fire." Denise's voice rumbled. Kit nodded surely. They'd stuck the creature in a hero costume they'd swiped from the depths of Endeavor's office, as well as some boots Kit had found at the mall. They'd stuck a hat on him to try and hide his exposed brain as well as one of those redneck face masks that wrapped around the lower part of the face and all the way around the back of the neck. They stuck a pair of massive sunglasses on the creature to hide his beady eyes. He passed as Endeavor decently if you weren't looking too hard. Ish.
"Right..." The nurse clearly wasn't convinced. "And you're here to... take Rei-san home?"
"He filled out the papers." Kit waved a hand with flourish. Denise gave a supporting nod, not knowing what was happening in the slightest. "Go ahead, Todoroki-san. Show her your ID."
They'd practiced beforehand. Denise almost robotically slipped a gloved hand into the concealed pocket in the side of the costume, fumbling slightly with the wallet they'd provided. The nurse watched him stiffly pull out the ID card they'd stolen from Endeavor's office. The man apparently had more than one. Kit hoped they'd be able to return it before the guy noticed it was gone. They'd had to practically tear the place apart to find it. Thank god for Izuku's stellar memory. He'd recalled where everything Kit had tossed around went prior and had rushed to clean up. By the end of it, it was like they were never there. Barring what they'd taken, of course.
The nurse took the ID gingerly, eyeing it. She tilted it, watching the official symbols reflect back at her with a frown. She could admit that this man did look like Endeavor physique wise, but why... why the hat? And mask? And sunglasses? There was no reason for her to be so skeptical. It just... Endeavor had never come to see his wife. Why was he suddenly checking her out? It was odd. Rei-san had always seemed so sure that she'd be spending the rest of her life institutionalized. Her distaste for her husband was clear. To think he'd show up like this. Still, she couldn't exactly deny him. He was her medical proxy.
She bit the inside of her cheek, glancing at the flame hero. He was stock still, arms hanging at his sides. He didn't seem normal, though, she couldn't claim to know what he acted like with people outside what she saw on TV. He'd always seemed like a brash and angry person. The individual before her gave off a desolate vibe. Empty and without personality, standing there slack. Like they weren't going to think thoughts if not addressed first. It was uncanny. Was this really Endeavor? And if so, was he under the influence of some sort of quirk or drug? This didn't seem like him. Or like anyone she'd ever met, really.
"...Right this way, then." The nurse stood up sharply, offering the ID back. Endeavor made no moves to take it back. The kid he was with was quick to snatch it, taking the wallet and jamming it back in before shoving the ID back into Endeavor's pocket. That was another thing-- what was Endeavor doing with this random kid? The boy's name sounded awfully familiar, but he was too young to be a hero of any kind. Where had she heard it before? This didn't seem like something she should stick her nose into. She knew that. Even if Rei-san was a patient, she'd been here longer than she'd been a nurse. This was her first real job in the healthcare field and she'd only been in it for two years. It was only natural she get close to the longer-term residents, right?
Still, she led them to Rei's room nonetheless. The door was cracked open. The brunette boy gave a beaming smile that would've been innocent if not for the glint in his eyes. Endeavor loomed behind him, lumbering after the kid like a baby duck after their mother. It was uncanny. She took a deep breath, stepping back and giving a polite smile of her own, unable to do much else. Kit yanked Endeavor forward, shoving him through the door first before hopping in after him. The nurse couldn't do much else other than watch as the door is slammed in her face, leaving her stranded out in the hall. She let out a sigh.
Inside Rei's hospital room, Kit found himself reaching up to rip Denise's mask down and sunglasses off before Rei could completely panic. The woman blinked owlishly, her entire body tense. Kit grinned at her.
"Natsuo sent me. Kinda." Kit shoved the sunglasses into Denise's hand. The creature took them absentmindedly. Kit leaned forward, hands on his hips. Rei found herself noting his lack of shoes, trying to wrap her head around the sudden burst of absurdity. "Get your shit. We're bailing you out."
Rei really, really didn't know what was going on. She smiled nonetheless.
