XXVII. a letter to Nicole

"No estoy haciendo esto!" Nikki shouted, slamming her letter back on the coffee table, making Michael flinch away from her.

Ashton sucked his teeth and rolled his eyes, along with Luke and Mama Joy.

Of course, Queen of Dramatics didn't want to read her letter.

"If you're going to be all dramatic, at least do it in English." Ashton commented, crossing his arms over his chest.

Nikki moved her head to face the boy with a scowl. "Cállate, chico blanco!" She spat, lunging at the golden haired boy.

Ashton uncrossed his arms and took a step closer. "What was that, Telemundo?" He furrowed his brows, causing both Calum and Luke to stand.

"Alright, everyone chill out." The blue eyed boy attempted to hose down the situation, placing a hand to Ashton's chest only for it to get smacked away.

The hazel eyed one sized the blond. "Oh, so now you want to protect senorita hot head?" He said, giving Luke's chest a light shove, letting off a breathy chuckle.

Nikki struggled in Michael's grasp, desperately wanting to wiggle through to possibly pop a vase over the golden boy's head.

Luke's jaw clenched but he kept his cool, fully aware that with one hit he would have Ashton out like a light. He stepped towards Ashton again.

"Calm down, Ashton."

"I'm not the one with a clenched jaw, mate." Ashton smirked, eyes locked on the blond's.

And by this time, Mama Joy is in shock because she's never seen the boys ever be so...disconnected from each other.

The way Ashton seemed ready to jump on everyone in the room.

The way Michael looked nervous and scared, as if he knew something would happen.

The way Luke seemed annoyed but ready to hose down a fight if need be.

The way Calum appears as of he's hanging on a thread with it all.

No, something wasn't right.

But she just didn't know what that something was...yet.

The blue eyed boy tried another step to Ashton, ready to really speak his mind, until Calum stepped in.

"C'mon, mates, it's not worth it." The brown boy raised a hand between the boys. Ashton snorted and slapped his hand out the way, getting into Calum's face.

"You should be the last one talking, big brother--"

"I'm not doing this with you, again, Ash."

"Don't say my name ever again, you disgusting piece of nothing." The golden boy growled, shoving the darker one, moving him back a bit.

"Ashton!" Mama Joy yelled out, reaching out towards the boys but Calum shook his head.

And in that moment she wanted to smack the boy upside his head because clearly Ashton is half a second away from laying her son out.

"It's alright, mum." He gave her a reassuring look then turned his attention back to the angry one.

He didn't want to fight Ashton. It wasn't because he felt he couldn't beat him, it's just that this occasion wasn't for that.

And he was going to make Ashton understand just that.

"I'm not doing this, again, mate." Calum sighed, watching as Ashton bitterly chuckled and stepped over to where he stood.

"What? Afraid you'll lose, brother bear?" He crossed his arms over his chest, an amused smile on his lips.

Calum shook his head. "No," He started, deflating the hazel eyed boy a bit, his smile dropping. "I'm not doing this because this, whatever's between us, can wait. Right now, we have more important things to tend to." He informed sternly, taking a step closer to Ashton, so close that he could see the vein popping on the side of his head.

"But after this is done then we have all day to settle our matters." Calum added, making eye contact with the irrate one.

Ashton thought about opening his mouth to reply and hopefully get to sock Calum in the jaw, again.

But suddenly, he started to grow curious to what could be in he remaining letters.

Most importantly, he wanted to know what was in Calum's.

He wanted an explanation to how and why Mhina and her so-called-brother got so close.

The boy hated the borderline obession feeling overwhelming him the moment he thought of potentially knowing what went down between Calum and Mhina.

But, as he stood there, giving his once best friend the hardest unit he could ever give, that obssesion continued to grow.

So, he bit his tongue and sighed, as if it took everything in him to speak his next words.

"You're right. This is more important." The golden boy replied, swallowing his pride for the moment.

Calum raised his brows in shock, surprised the boy gave in and agreed.

But he quickly relaxed his face and gave off a nod.

"Glad you can see it my way." Calum commented, turning on his heel until Ashton grabbed his arm to turn him back his way.

"Don't get it twisted, mate. That wasn't for you." He said raising a brow, giving the boy a look like he had two heads. Calum shrugged Ashton's hand off his limb.

The brown boy furrowed his brows in curiousity and opened his mouth to respond--

"Let's just get back to the letters." Luke said, gesturing to the paper in Nikki's hands.

--that's until Luke unknowingly interrupted him.

His attention, as did everyone else's, shifted towards the Hispanic girl with the paper in her hands.

Nikki rolled her eyes then moved them to the loudly written words on the sheet of paper.

12:01 am

A minute into the next day

Dear Nicole,

I chose a different color of ink to write your letter

No specific reason why...just wanted to get my point across loud and clear

The moment you walked into that garage with your full lips, long hair, and pretty caramel skin, I knew there was something about you

I didn't know what that something was at the time

Was it jealousy?

Was it curiousity?

Was it fear?

Was it disdain?

Was it all four?

And then you and I locked eyes and I felt that something spill out of my pores even more but I still didn't know what it was

You spoke and that something wrapped around my neck and choked the words from my tongue

You sat next to me and that something set flames to my skin and created some type of barrier to my outer being

You cheered them on and that something wanted to reach out and seize your tongue forever so it couldn't hurt anyone again

And then...then the true identity of that something revealed itself a few seconds later...

It was a four-headed monster that walked behind you as your shadow and was only something I can see

All four emotions became the four main suspects of that something I felt when you walked in the room

It was jealousy, curiousity, fear, and disdain

Each played a vital role as our story played out

From there on they went in order of some sort

Curiousity came first, seeing as I didn't know who you were or what you were capable of

I watched you each and everyday as you stuck around, taunting me in a way unknown to you

Your very prescence taunted me

But soon that emotion faded when the third week came around I had gotten to 'know' you

And then the day after I found you in my room, not alone, and beneath another body

That day is when the second emotion boiled over, disdain

I watched you pop your lips at me and catch an attitude faster than a cold, though you were in the wrong

So, as you headed out and said your smart 'goodbye', I popped you in your mouth to settle the score

Somehow that something, that disdain didn't fade away even though the score was even, so to speak

Fast forward to the trip, one I wasn't expecting you to attend

I'll admit you had me shook, ready to jump on you just for showing your face again

But you played nice which brought that curiousity from the ashes

It was then on, I realized the score wasn't settled, it was tipping over to my end and you wanted to rebalance it

So, to do that you played on the third emotion, jealousy

The unnecessary comments, the giggles, the feeding of chocolate covered strawberries, the lick of the lip

I didn't realize what it meant but I realized the big green monster that followed me like a moth to a light, jabbing at my side and whispering to me to react

But I didn't...I chose to act like it wasn't there

As if that emotion was mere dust in the wind

However, if you keep gases bottled up, it's only a matter of time before the top popped off

Just like you did at the club later that night

You saw the opportunity to even out the scale...and you took it

That's when that final emotion kicked in, fear

You knew something

You had something against me that could ruin lives

A mother's, a brother's, a boyfriend's, a band, a family

And then, as I got dragged out of the club, those four emotions came back to life and found a body to live in

It was the dragger

It was never you, Nicole

I only felt those things because of him

That something wasn't an emotion, is what I realized

Because that 'something' was 'someone'

It stood at above six feet, had sun kissed skin, the softest lips, chocolate curly hair, strong yet gentle hands and played the bass to perfection

You were and always ever will be the non-factor; you were non importante

It was never you

It was him

"It was--"

"Calum?" Mama Joy interrupted Nikki, moving her head over to her son, furrowing her brows.

The boy's eyes shifted from the latina to his mom, swallowing as they locked eyes.

The full truth was bound to come out now.

There was no turning back.
