I. home sweet home
"Welcome home, Mhina!" Joy chirped, opening the front door to her home and presenting the living room. The girl gave off a forced smile, mainly because of how overly friendly the lady was being but also, she didn't want to be rude.
Mhina stepped inside but stopped in the doorway. Now, when she first pulled up with Joy, she heard various instruments idly playing. The girl thought it came from the neighbors, that's until the music blared from a door nearby. She furrowed her brows, catching Joy's attention.
"Oh, that's just Calum." The woman answered waving a dismissive hand. Mhina was still slightly confused and prepared to ask who Calum was that's until a doorknob rattled.
The girl took a half step back, not sure which door it was but moved just in case. The door to her left, probably two feet away from the entrance, creaked open, revealing a Joy-look-alike. He hadn't seen the girl or even looked up to meet her gaze. He was focused on his guitar, twisting the tuning keys. It was until he spotted a pair of small feet that didn't resemble his mother's. Unless her feet shrunk three inches overnight. He slowly made his way up the body to the face, cocking a brow.
"Mom, who's this?" The boy asked, a bit harsher than intended. Mhina caught the 'tude behind his words and mirrored his expression.
Joy didn't seem the catch the somewhat tension, finally shutting the front door and walking over to the girl.
"This is our new addition to the family." She stated, throwing an arm over the girl's shoulder. Mhina's eyes dropped to the hand on her upper arm, not exactly that comfortable with the woman considering that she just met her. She's sure the woman meant well but goodness... give it time.
"Why, though?" The boy questioned, the harshness still evident in his voice. And that brought the girl's attention back to the jerk before her. Why is he so bitter? But, that wasn't the only question she had for the lad.
"Who are you?" Joy parted her mouth to answer but the boy beat her to it. And boy, was he mad.
"Who am I? I'm Calum aka her son, aka someone who lives here, aka the son who pays bills in this very house. The real questions here are who are you and why are you in my house?." Calum explained angrily, taking the strap and instrument off his body and placing it in its stand.
Joy frowned at her son's words but chuckled shortly after, strolling over to the kitchen counter.
"There's one bill under your name, one that you don't even pay for, I do. And the only reason why your name is under the said bill is because your sister left." Calum seemed to deflate from his mother's words, feeling slightly embarrassed but he wasn't going to present that to this stranger in his house. He rolled his eyes and sighed, crossing his arms soon after.
"When you told me you were going to run errands," he glanced over at the girl, giving her a once over as he continued. "I didn't think that translated to buying children."
Mhina quickly looked over at the boy and narrowed her eyes. She didn't simply just buy the girl, she wasn't an item in your favorite supermarket, she was a human being. This dude had some nerve!
"I didn't buy her, Calum. I signed papers to legally have her as apart of our family." Joy smiled over at the girl, which dropped when she glanced over at her irate son.
"So wait," his sentence was cut short by a dry chuckle, breaking it into fragments. "That day you went on about more kids, you were serious? I thought that was just mom mumbo jumbo."
Mhina wished she was anywhere but here. It was probably the most awkward thing she's ever experienced. Not only wasn't she welcomed by someone in the house but she was in the middle of their conversation about her and why she's there.
"Well as you can see it wasn't 'mom mumbo jumbo'. Do you like spaghetti?" She directed the question to the girl, opening the fridge and taking out a few items before setting them on the counter. Mrs. Hood wasn't in the mood to go back and forth with her son and she hoped it stopped there. Hoped...
"Ash, Luke, and Mike never got asked what food they liked." He mumbled under his breath, catching both Mhina and his mother's attention.
"That's because I know the answer, everything. I'm surprised there's still food in here." Joy answered, bringing a giggle from Mhina's lips. Calum twisted his face at the girl, not finding much funny.
"I love spaghetti." She finally answered, watching as the woman placed the packet of ground beef in the microwave to defrost. Joy turned and smiled with a nod.
Mhina took this time to reach for her suitcase, wheeling it beside her feet. She felt Calum's eyes on her as she moved which caused her to roll hers to the floor. This boy was way too dramatic.
"This is a joke, right?" Calum just wasn't convinced that this girl was about to move in and start living in his house. His mom couldn't have possibly brought a complete stranger into their home to feed, shelter, and clothe, could she?
Joy tittered and sighed, shaking her head. She was beyond done with her kid's foolishness. "Yeah, this is all a big dream. Now, follow the yellow brick road and show Mhina around." She turned to the boiling pot on the stove and was determined to stay that way. That was the last of her little bicker with her son and she knew he knew better than to continue.
He huffed and almost reached for the door handle to the garage but thought against it. If she grounded him, he'd be banned from playing with his band, which wasn't something he could handle. So, for the bands sake, he sucked it up and reached for her suitcase.
"Touch nothing. Say nothing. This will go by quick and smooth if you do." Calum rolled his eyes and turned before she could reply.
