Chapter Three: Brand New Day
Atena woke up to a sudden urgent prodding on her leg, causing her to groan and roll over.
"Atena?" whispered Maya. "You slept in late, so I just though I'd..." she stopped suddenly and glanced cautiously around.
The young girl picked herself off the cave floor, all fatigue forgotten. "Is something wrong?"
Maya frowned, and looked like she was trying to refrain from crying. "I'm... I'm just really scared."
Atena attempted a reassuring grin. "Just try not to worry, ok? It's hard not to be frightened during times like these, what really matters is that you face your fears."
Before the bobcat could respond, there was a disruptive clatter from the cave opening. Maya arched her back and tried to meow threateningly, but all that came out was a small squeak. There was a large shadow approaching them, that had the figure of some kind of cat. Atena reached behind her back for her bow and arrows, but remembered that she had put them somewhere else before she fell asleep. There was no time to go retrieve them from wherever they were.
The shadow then opened its mouth threateningly, as if to take a bite out of a ham sandwich, and emitted an unexpected, small growl.
Atena laughed, for she knew it had been a prank. "Mica! Stop, we know it's you!"
The was an abrupt silence, and the small bobcat soon came into view, with a cheeky grin.
"Mica!" exclaimed Maya. "This is no time for fun and games! You had us freaked out!"
"Sis, you're no fun!" protested Mica.
"Yeah, but-"
"Guys..." interrupted Atena. "Where's Canopy?"
"Don't worry, she went outside just a few minutes ago, actually. She said something about getting a drink of water from the stream," stated Maya's brother matter-of-factly.
Maya gasped. "And you didn't ask us first?" she demanded, impatiently. "She could be in all kinds of trouble! Come on Atena, let's go find her."
Before the girl could respond, Maya sped away into the outside world, not stopping to look back.
"You should come with us," said Atena to Mica. "I don't want her to worry about your well being as well as Canopy's."
"I guess you're right..."
"Of course I am, come on, just follow me," said Atena.
"I'm sorry... I should've said something earlier..." said Mica.
"Mica, please don't worry about it. It's not your fault, you didn't know."
The bobcat sighed. "I guess you're right. You really do believe in second chances, don't you?"
Atena smirked. "Yes, now let's hurry. We don't want to lose Maya either."
Together, the girl and the bobcat hurried outside to look for their friend and sibling, unaware of how their world in the forest was going to change forever.
