FOURTEEN. birthday cake
AUGUST GOMEZ and Angelina Reed couldn't live without each other. They quite literally needed each other to function.
They had been best friends since kindergarten and they've been joint to the hip ever since then.
The same couldn't be said about their moms.
Lucia and Charlotte had been the worst of people. You couldn't leave the two of them alone without some sort of brawl happening between the two of them.
Then they attended college. They just so happened to be roommates and somehow sticking the two of them alone in a room together actually made them friends.
They did a lot of things that August and Angel had done grown up expect Lucia (August's mother) went to college for preforming arts and Charlotte (Angelina's mother) went to school for teaching.
They graduated, lived down the block from each other, had kids, got married. It was the sweet life for the both of them.
Every year on their mothers birthday's Angelina and August would make really bad cake and it didn't matter to them of their moms ate them or not. They always enjoyed that their kids did something today.
That tradition never stopped. Not even today.
Though things have changed.
Lucia would've been 48 years old and couldn't seen August do extraordinary things with her life.
August placed the last candle on the cake and looked up at Angelina
"This is the best cake we've made." Angel smiled.
August nodded.
The two of them were home alone while the others were on set.
They had called out to celebrate Lucia's birthday.
"She hated strawberry frosting though." August smiled, "Said it never tasted like actual strawberries."
She began lighting the candles and took a picture of the final product.
Angelina watched as August closed her eyes and blew out the candles.
"What do you think she wished for?" Angelina asked.
"No clue." August answered, "She probably wished for a more comfortable couch knowing her."
The two of them shared a laugh before taking a slice of cake and putting it away if the others wanted a slice.
They would do this every year for Lucia and Charlotte's birthday. It was actually Angelina who came up with the idea.
They started off a dirt cakes and made their way to edible foods.
"Do you think she would've liked our show?" Angel asked.
"If we weren't in it? She'd hate it. It'd be even worse if she found out we never got a part after auditioning."
Lucia was a big, big fan of television and the arts. She worked as a small town camerawoman, filming commercials and ads in their hometown in Texas.
She was well known by the town and was simply adored by many others.
"She would be proud of you, August."
August walked over to Angelina and wrapped her arms around her shoulders.
"She'd be proud of you too, Angel."
The two stood in a comfortable silence before August unwrapped her arms from Angel.
"I'm gonna tap a nap. If the others come by before I wake, make sure you offer them a piece of cake."
Angel watched August head up stairs and pulled her phone out of her back pocket.
Angelina really did care for August and the same vice versa and she wasn't going to let her best friend stay cooped up in her room.

THE PLAN was simple.
Angelina had gathered the cast at the local park with balloons in their hands as they waited for Josh and August to arrive.
August had no idea that they were there and only assumed that Josh wanted to take her out.
Angelina held a candle and a balloon in her hands as she explained for the umpteenth time what the plan was.
It was very simple actually.
Once August and Josh arrived, Jacob and Olivia would had each other them a balloon and would let it go whenever she was ready to.
"Josh just text me." Angelina announced, "They're sitting in the parking lot as I speak."
Josh looked over at August. She was wearing one of his hoodies with the hood resting on top of her head.
He found out through Angel that it was Gus's mom's birthday just like the others.
"Are you okay?"
August glanced up with a small smile, "Yeah." She sighed, "It's just one of those days, you know?"
Josh nodded, "That's why I brought you to the park. Escapism."
August kept her small smile as she hopped out of his Honda.
The two of them walked further into the park when they saw the others standing closer to the tree.
Jacob gave her a small smile and handed August a purple balloon; Olivia doing the same with Josh.
Josh wrapped his arm around August and carefully walked her closer to the center.
"I didn't want you to celebrate alone." Angelina smiled.
August gave Angel a small smile before facing the others, Josh's arm still
looped with hers.
"She would've hated this." August laughed, "But she would've loved you guys."
Angelina joined her side, "Let go whenever your ready."
"Should we sing Happy Birthday?" Matt asked.
"No, she hated it." August answered, "She would've wanted us to sing something that mattered to everyone."
There was a beat of silence passed before August cleared her throat.
"Everyone is special in their own way." She sang softly.
The others soon joined singing the once upbeat song in a slower tune.
August sighed as the song drew to a close and rested her head against Josh's shoulder.
She closed her eyes for a moment before letting the balloon go. The others followed suit and looked up as the balloons flew away.
Everyone continued looking up as August and Angelina made eye contact.
She loosened herself from Josh's grasp to wrap herself with Angelina. They felt more arms surrounding them and it lead to one of the best group hugs that August could've asked for.
This is truly what she needed.
