Chapter 44

Johnson shook his head as he watched Ford storm away. He never thought Ford would risk his life for a girl in a million years. He watched as Ford's tough walls broke down around Evey. It was endearing to watch, but unfortunately, it had to happen when the world had gone to shit.

No one said a word as they watched Ford march to his death. Joey stayed in Fiona's arms, sucking on his thumb. He rested his head against her shoulder. How could he look so innocent while they were in this horrifying situation? Fiona's eyes widened as she switched her gaze from Ford to Johnson.

"We can't let him go," she said in a harsh whisper.

"We can't turn around," Johnson said. "We have to keep going toward the hospital."

"Evey and Gomez could not have gone far," Anjo said. "We could get them."

"It may be too late," Johnson said.

Fiona chewed on her lip as she cast her eyes on the puddles. She understood what Johnson was saying. Gomez must have already killed Evey. He had said many negative things and even placed a gun in Evey's face, but did he have the capability to kill her? Could he do it?

"We don't know that," Fiona said. "She could be alive."

"I hope she kills him," Roger said.

Fiona and Anjo's jaws dropped as they looked at Roger. The priest had said nothing negative since they left the military base. He refused to carry weapons and kill any of the Infected. Roger shrugged when he looked at their shocked expressions.

"What can I say?" he asked. "I don't like the man."

Screams and shrieks echoed through the tunnel. Fiona held her breath and tightened her hold on Joey. Anjo held the knife in front of him and spun around because he had no idea what direction the shrill noises were coming from.

"We need to keep moving," Johnson said.

"We're not going back for Evey?" Fiona asked.

Johnson closed his eyes for a moment before shaking his head. He turned and took the light off the group. He took a deep breath before motioning for the group to move forward. Anjo stepped beside him, and Johnson passed the flashlight to him.

"Hold it," he told Anjo. "I need my hands free to kill anything in front of us. Don't let me down."

Anjo swallowed past the lump forming in his throat. The weight of the light was heavy in his hands.

"Let's go," Johnson said.

The group moved forward. Forcing themselves to move ahead, no one mentioned Evey or Ford. Fiona wondered if she would ever see Evey again. She had known her since Evey was an infant. She saw Evey almost every day until Evey moved away for university. The thought that she was murdered - not eaten by Infected - made her stomach twist.

A chorus of screeches came from in front of the group. Johnson stopped. He held his hand out in front of Anjo and stopped the group.

Was it safe to go further? How many were there? They could not see in the dark, and the light only attracted attention.

"What do we do?" Anjo asked.

"How far are we from the hospital?" Fiona asked.

"It should not be much further," Johnson said.

The shrieking became louder as the Infected approached. A series of screams came until silence fell over the tunnel. Only the sound of their breathing and the dripping water filled the air. They stood in silence, unsure if they should move.

In the darkness, an Infected woman crept up behind the group. None of them noticed her until Roger screamed. She grabbed his shoulders and pulled him back. He swung his hands in an attempt to hit the Infected, but his fighting was useless. He refused to bring a weapon with him.

Fiona staggered back into a body. She let out a yelp, and her heart pounded because she expected it to be an Infected. She spun, tightening her hold on Joey, and saw that it was Johnson. He pushed past Fiona and charged toward the Infected and Roger.

The Infected bit down on Roger's shoulder. He screamed in pain and thrashed in an attempt to push her off. The Infected's teeth buried deeper into his skin. His blood sprayed when the Infected ripped the hunk of flesh off his shoulder.

A crowd of Infected emerged from the darkness of the tunnel. Johnson froze, and his eyes widened as he realized they were outnumbered. He looked over his shoulder to see no Infected were coming from the other side. Could they outrun the hoard?

"Anjo, turn out the light," he said.

Anjo's hands shook as he fumbled to flip the switch. The tunnel flooded with darkness. Fiona closed her eyes and tensed as she prepared to be ripped to shreds. Anjo chewed on his bottom lip to try and stop himself from breathing heavily. Johnson curled his fingers tighter around the knife's handle, ready to kill whatever would touch him.

The Infected stopped screaming. They growled and grumbled as they walked past the group. The sound of Roger's body being ripped to pieces was all that could be heard. He had stopped screaming, and they all knew that he was dead.

Fiona listened to an Infected's footstep splash in the puddle beside her. She held onto her breath as the Infected's warm breath fanned across her skin. The Infected chomped their teeth. The sound was close to her ear. Fiona thought she would be sick from the fear that was taking over her body. Pulling Joey closer to her body, she refused to let anything happen to the little boy.

Joey whined when Fiona put her hand on his head to try and protect him. She could not see as the Infected all turned to look at the noise. Joey whined and kicked his legs, and tried to push Fiona away. Fighting back the instinct to shush him, she tightened her hold. The Infected near her let out a shriek that made her stomach clench. Unsure of how the Infected were planning to kill her, she crouched on the ground. Her crushing hold on Joey caused him to cry harder. She ran her fingers across his face, feeling the ridge of his nose, and covered his mouth with her hand. Joey thrashed in her hold harder.

Tears were burning Fiona's eyes as she shook her head. Praying silently, she hoped that Joey would settle down. They would be killed, and there was nothing she could do. She would run forward and away but could not see in the pitch-black. She would bash into an Infected and be eaten.

An Infected knocked into Johnson's shoulder as they walked toward the sound. Johnson wanted to start swinging and kill anything that touched him. He would never forgive himself if he stabbed a member of the group. His heart was pounding, and bile was rising in his throat. He knew that they were fucked.

Anjo's chest ached as he listened to Joey cry. The boy was so innocent and did not realize his tantrum would kill them all. His cries were attracting all of the blood-hungry monsters.

He looked down at the flashlight in his hand. They were moments away from being killed. They would all be murdered. He had the tool to stop it in his hand.

Anjo muttered a curse before sliding his thumb on the switch. A bright beam of light attracted the attention of the Infected. Without thinking, Anjo ran in the opposite direction. Carrying the light, the Infected shrieked. Joey was still crying, and Fiona was cowering on the ground with him.

"Hey!" Anjo screamed. "Hey! Follow me!"

The Infected let out a mixture of screams. Anjo sprinted as fast as he could into the tunnel. The Infected chased after him. Their hands were outstretched, and they were biting the air. Some swiped for his shirt but narrowly missed him.

Johnson held his hands out as he walked toward Joey's crying. He bumped into Fiona. She screamed before covering her mouth to silence herself. Johnson swooped down and grabbed Fiona, and pulled her so that she was standing. Johnson took Joey out of her arms. He bounced Joey as he cooed at him.

"You need to be quiet, buddy," he said softly. "We're almost there. Just a little bit longer."

A new scream echoed through the tunnel. It was not the sound of someone infected with Thyestean. Fiona buried her head in her hands as the image of what was happening to Anjo filled her mind. Johnson put his hand on her back.

"We have to keep going," he said.

"We're not going to make it," she said.

"Yes, we are," he said. "We have to."

She let out a deep breath before they walked forward. In complete darkness, Fiona wondered how they would find the hospital if they could not see.
