Chapter 20
Ford did not come out of the bedroom for the rest of the day. He was hiding from Evey to avoid the barrage of questions she would ask. The sun was setting when he came out of the room.
Evey was lying on the couch. Joey was jumping on the cushion at her feet. Josie had Chester's arm as she was reading the book that they took from the first house. The twins had read it countless times and had not seemed to tire from it yet.
Ford did not say a word to any of them as he hurried out the front door. Evey went over to the window and watched Ford rush across the street to Johnson's house. She lingered by the window until she watched him come back to their house.
"Grab the kids," Ford said. "We're heading to the field."
"Joey and Josie." Evey grabbed the twin's attention. "Come with me."
Evey held out her hands and they each took one. They walked over to the front door where Ford was standing. He looked down at Evey's thigh.
"Give me the gun," he said.
"Why?" she asked.
"You're not going to need it again."
Evey finally got a gun yesterday. There was no way that she was going to give it up already.
"If we aren't going to need guns then why not let me keep it?" she asked. Ford opened his mouth to speak, but Evey pulled the twins forward. "Let's go kids."
Ford let out a deep breath and rolled his eyes. Evey brought the kids to the truck and helped them into the back. She fastened the seatbelts across them. Josie had Chester in her hands.
"Where are we going, Evey?" she asked.
"Somewhere safe," Evey said. "Hopefully, it will be a place we can stay for a while."
The front door of the truck opened and Evey watched Ford get into the driver's seat. She looked around to see the other trucks filling with people. Ford revved the engine.
"Get in, Everett," he said.
Evey closed the door before climbing into the passenger's seat. Ford was the first one to pull out of a driveway. The rest of the trucks followed close behind as Ford made his way to the field.
The thought of a Cure had been on Evey's mind all day. If there had been a Cure, her family would have not had to die. Lila could have survived and lived the future that she always wanted.
Ford drove up over the curb when they got to the field. The rest of the trucks followed them. Ford parked at the edge of the field. He let out a deep breath as he pulled the key out of the ignition. He looked at the twins in the backseat before looking at Evey. She had been smiling since they left the house.
"Why are you so happy?" he asked.
"Because we won't be on the run anymore," she said. "We'll be safe and I will finally be able to breathe."
"Give me your gun."
Evey's smile dropped. Her fingers grazed along the weapon strapped to her thigh.
"I'm not giving it back to you," she said.
"If we're no longer on the run then you are not going to need it," he said.
Evey bit down on her lip. She could keep the kids safe in the city. There would be enough people there that Ford would not even think about hurting Josie or Joey. Until then, she needed the gun.
"I'll give it to you in Toronto," she said.
Ford scowled before storming out of the truck and slamming the door. She watched as he walked up to the soldiers who had already gotten out of their trucks.
"Evey," Joey's soft voice said from the backseat. "Is Ford mad at us?"
Evey turned in her seat so that she could see them. She forced a smile onto her lips to reassure the kids. Josie had Chester in her arm and her thumb in her mouth.
"No, he's not," she said. "He's just a little stressed. It's going to be okay."
There was a knock on the window, and Evey turned expecting to see Ford fuming. Instead, Fiona was outside. She waved and Evey opened the door.
"How are you all doing?" Fiona asked.
"Good," Evey said. "But I will be better once we get there."
"Me too."
Evey climbed out of the truck. She helped Josie and Joey out of the backseat. They each held onto her hands as they walked toward the rest of the civilians. Anjo and Connar were deep in a discussion about what was the best zombie movie. Evey cleared her throat when they approached because Connar was talking about a gruesome death scene.
"Let's change the topic," Evey said.
"I'm not sure about this Cure," Anjo said. "I don't think we'll find one."
"We have to at least try," Fiona said. "You should know that there is a cure to a lot of diseases and viruses. It may take a while, but we can find one."
Anjo sighed. His eyes darted around the field, unable to look at any of the other civilians.
"I don't know how much I can help," he muttered.
"Everyone is already dead," Nicole said. Her eyes were still rimmed red from her constant crying. "It doesn't matter anymore."
Evey looked over at Johnson to see that he was on his radio. Ford had his arms crossed over his chest and she noticed him staring at her. When their eyes connected, Ford looked away. Johnson turned and headed toward the group.
"The helicopter will be here in a few minutes," he said. "Everyone has everything?"
Ford walked over to the truck and grabbed the bag of weapons. He threw it over his shoulder and walked beside Evey. She pulled the kids closer to her body. Connar and Anjo walked back to their trucks to grab the remaining bags.
There was a loud noise, and Evey looked up at the sky. A helicopter was flying toward the field. Her ears pounded as the blades tore through the air. A smile grew across her lips. They were so close to safety.
The helicopter hovered over the field before starting to lower. Josie and Joey's grip on Evey's hands tightened. She kneeled down on the grass and wrapped her arms around them.
The screech was barely heard over the sound of the helicopter. Evey did not hear it at first. The helicopter lowered and the sound grew louder, drowning out the sound of screeching.
Ford leaned down next to Evey. He grabbed her arm and pulled her up. He brought his mouth close to her ear so that she could hear him over the helicopter. His warm breath fanned across her ear and caused a shiver to run up her spine.
"You need to run," he said. "Run to the helicopter."
Evey opened her mouth to question him, but then saw the Infected running into the field from behind the trees. A hoard of people with blood dripping from their eyes and foaming at their mouths were running.
The side of the helicopter opened. Soldiers had guns in their hands and were firing into the crowd of Infected. The blades were still spinning and tearing through the air. The Infected charged toward the helicopter. Their bodies jerked as bullets hit them in the shoulder and legs, but only a few dropped to the ground.
Evey's heart pounded and she was frozen. She wanted to run, but that would be running toward the threat. She could not convince her body to rush the twins toward that.
A wave of Infected crashed into the helicopter. Evey watched as they knocked the guns out of the soldiers' hands and tore chunks out of their flesh. Their screams and cries were not heard over the sound of the helicopter.
The helicopter creaked as the Infected climbed over each other as they crashed into the side of the helicopter. Evey's jaw dropped as the helicopter filled with Infected.
Their safety was gone. Their ticket to freedom had just been stolen from them.
Ford bent down and picked Josie up. He grabbed Evey's arm and pulled her back. She tore her attention away from the helicopter.
"Get back to the truck!" he shouted.
The wall of Infected was tipping the helicopter over. If they did not get back to the truck, they were going to be ripped to shreds by the blades.
Evey picked Joey up in her arms before running. She kept stealing glances over her shoulder to see the helicopter being knocked over. The blades were getting closer and closer to the ground. The rest of the civilians were also fleeing to the trucks. Evey put her hand on the back of Joey's head and blocked his view from the scene.
There was a crash as the blades tore into the grass and kicked up the dirt. The fall stopped the blades from spinning. The screeching grew louder as the Infected climbed over the helicopter and charged toward the Immune.
Ford opened the back door, and shoved Josie into the backseat. Evey slid Joey in before slamming the door shut. She pulled the gun out of the strap and started to fire. She tried to aim for the head, but she was missing. Her hands trembled as she fired into the sea of Infected running toward the trucks.
"Everett, get in!" Ford yelled.
She fired one more time before running back into the truck. Two of the trucks raced off of the field. Evey looked in the side mirror to see Harrington dragging Nicole toward the truck. She was crying and shaking her head as she tried to rip herself free. The Infected were closing in, so Harrington let go of Nicole and ran toward his truck. Nicole crumpled to the grass, and the Infected swarmed over her. Evey could not hear her scream, but she knew that Nicole was dead.
The truck jostled from side to side as Ford pulled them off of the field. Evey had not let go of the gun and watched the Infected chase them off the field and onto the street. Ford let out a string of curses as they raced behind the other trucks. Harrington was close behind them.
"Are we going to die?" Joey asked from the backseat.
"No," Ford said. "They're not too fast."
"We will outrun them?" Evey asked.
"Yes," he said. "They will tire out eventually."
Evey nodded. Her muscles were tense as she watched in the rearview mirror. The Infected became smaller and smaller as they became further away. Josie and Joey were clinging to each other. Ford glanced down at the dashboard.
"We could always run out of gas first though," he said.
Evey's eyes went wide as she looked at him and she hoped it was some sick sense of humour.
