before

Before they met, they operated on different wavelengths.

This wasn't love at first sight. No, nothing like that. More like interest at first. She noticed him, miraculously. She was the new girl in town, the brand new shiny toy, so of course, he noticed her too.

But he wasn't the type of boy people noticed. If you look real close you'll find him. Buried amongst the crowd, with his nose in a book. He's not what she'd usually go for, or anywhere close to her past flings. He's not like any other boy you'd ever see. He was beautiful, in a way that no one else could be. He didn't talk much but he didn't need to.

She was the opposite of him. Everywhere she went, people noticed her. It was hard not to. She was the kind of beauty that made you drop whatever you were doing and look at her, stop and stare to take a good look at her. She made the sun shine in a muggy way. Her beauty was bold, yet subtle. Her face was beautiful, but so was her soul. The way she laughed. The way she lit up when she found something funny or talked about something she enjoyed. She was pure gold. Her beauty inside and our whispered ever so boldly that it would capture your heart and soul with just one look or glance.

The day they met, the seed was planted. It was the perfect time to meet. After all, it was February, the month of romance and love. They were warmed by the sun, she was walking around, soaking up the sun and socializing, while he was under a tree, reading a book, soaking up the shade and trying to stay cool. He had heard of the girl who had transferred so late in the school year, in the middle of the second semester, but he didn't think much of her. Just another girl. She'd heard of him because she was fascinated by him. She wanted to know what lied behind the boy who hardly spoke and always carried around a book at his side.

It was his eyes she noticed first. The ones that would read words constantly and scan a room and stare up at the blue sky. He stared up at the blue sky because he wished his eyes were the color of the blue sky. He hated them, his eyes, but she was, once again, fascinated by him and everything about him. She wanted to know what his eyes looked like when they lit up, or what they looked like when they were sad, or what they looked like when he smiled.

Sometimes you meet someone and it's clear that the two of you, on some level, belong together. As lovers, as friends, or as something entirely different. You just work, whether you understand each other or are involved romantically with each other.

That's what it was like for them. She was like a rainbow, and he was the blue sky that came with it.

But then they became Noah and Dixie. And then everything changed.
