Chapter 5
There is a man sat across from me. Lisa ushers me over to him. His facial expression is calm, his hands clasped at the fingers. He gives me a warm smile, a genuine one.
"Good afternoon!" he says. "I'm Rey Caddel, what about you?"
I bite my lip. "Beatrice Graves. But people usually call me Bee." I mumble.
"Okay, nice to meet you, Bee." he offers a hand to shake, I take it.
I then sit. Lisa smiles and leaves, and although I don't like her, I suddenly feel very small and shy.
"So, where are you from, Bee?"
"Um, Cambridge."
"Oh, really? My mother lives in Cambridge." he smiles.
"I think I knew her. Mrs Caddel, she lived down the road from me."
"Really, you knew her? God, what a small world." he smiles.
"My dad was also from the Philippines. I mean, I never met him, but..."
He gives a reassuring smile. "My husband's sister in law is Filipino."
I force a smile. Like I care about his husband's Filipino sister-in-law.
"Well, Bee, what are you interested in? Any hobbies?"
I pause. I was never allowed to have interests and hobbies before.
"Um... I like to... draw." I hardly ever draw but I don't want to seem boring.
"Oh? Are you good?"
I shrug.
"Maybe you can show me some time." he offers a smile. I force one back. "Well, I think I'll head off, Bee. You seem very lovely, though, if you want me to foster you I would be very happy."
I nod. "Thank you."
He leaves after another awkward 15 minutes discussion.
"So, how did you feel about him, Beatrice?" Lisa asks.
"He seems nice." I mumble.
"So, you gonna spend a few weeks with him and see how you feel about being fostered."
I hesitate before shrugging, and then nodding. "Sure."
"Okay!"
I leave then and text Katelyn to meet me. I sit on the rooftop of the withered house.
"Hey, gorgeous, you okay?" I hear their voice from behind me and find myself turn hot.
"Yeah." I manage to say, feeling my stomach turn.
"Whats up?"
I bite my lip. "Some guy wants to foster me."
"Oh. Is he nice?"
I nod. "He's just so... boring. But I know his mother, so..."
Their eyebrow raises. "Well, as long as you're comfortable with the situation." They sit next to me, their hand going to it's place on my arm. I feel myself freeze, but it's not from discomfort. I smile as I rest my head on their shoulder, breathing in their scent of off brand perfume.
"You okay?"
I nod, just enjoying the relaxing moment.
Moments like these, I think, really make life ok.
