Chapter 3

I get up at 6am. While a lie-in sounds nice, I'm so used to getting up early it would probably be impossible.

I get dressed quickly. Sweater, skirt, fishnets, boots.

I quickly get my hair done and makeup on, and then I wonder what to do.

Nobody is up yet. Even if they were, I wouldn't want to spend the next few hours talking to Lisa, or any one of the children.

What's next for me? I know they want to put me in foster care, and eventually move to being adopted. But I'm 16. Nobody adopts teenagers. They want cute babies and toddlers.

I eventually decide to head out of the house and take a walk.

The air is cold but I'm used to it. The breeze is actually nice on my warm face, and I walk down the street, making a mental note the entire time of how to get back.

I continue on my walk- and bump into someone.

They're around my age, and a little taller. They have dark hair and dark eyes. They give me a smile.

"Sorry about that."

I shake my head. "Don't worry about it."

They look at me. "Wow, you're gorgeous. Where are you from?"

"Oh, uh, I'm from Cambridge. But my dad was from the Philippines." Not that I've ever met him.

"Ohh, I thought so. I'm part Japanese." they smile. "I'm Katelyn."

"Uh, I'm Bee."

"Bee. Nice to meet you, Bee. Why are you up so early, anyhow?"

"Oh, uh, I'm just used to being up this early." I don't explain why.

"Oh. Me, I got up to watch the sun rise."

"Oh? Sunrise isn't until 7:30, though."

They smile. "Follow me, Bee."

Katelyn leads me to an old building. It's dark and bleak, and seemingly abandoned. They take me around the back, and point at a ladder.

"Follow me."

Katelyn climbs up the ladder, and I follow, sitting on the rickety roof.

"Be careful." they point to a hole. "Made a mistake there."

I laugh softly, and they point in front of them. "The sun'll be coming up there in 5 minutes."

And so, I sit there, and gaze at the sun. It begins to raise. I squint my eyes, in awe.

"There she is." Katelyn grins. "And she's beautiful."

I nod, unable to breathe.

It takes its position in the orange sky, and Katelyn turns back to me.

"We should make this a common recurrence. I say we meet here every morning."

I just nod. Katelyn gets up and climbs down the ladder.

"See ya, Bumble Bee."
