37. Paths

"How did she get like this?" A voice said that Becca wasn't familiar with. She tried to move but her body wasn't responding to her wishes at all. It took her a few more tries of moving any part of her body but it wont move.

"I just found her like this. I don't know anything, i saw her and the kid two hours before this and she was fine, stressed from the ferry incident but otherwise fine." Another voice appeared in her ears, Tony's. She felt a little safer knowing she was with her brother, but the other man was still a mystery to her.

"So there's a two hour gap that obviously caused her heart and mind so much distress that it did this to her." The unknown voice said. She was confused as to where she was, and who the voice was. But what she did know was why she was like this. Her body had shut itself down from the immense pain it felt after Peter had broken up with her.

Peter.

He had left her there on the ground and walked away. He held her heart in his hand and threw it away like it was poison to touch. Becca wasn't sure she could ever get over this pain. This heartbreak.

"Her vitals are dropping again. Damn it." The unknown voice curses as Becca hears scuffling and footsteps surround her. "Come on Rebecca, fight this." He pleads.

She doesn't want to fight anymore. She fought enough with Peter. She fought her entire life. She was done.

"Reebs, I know whatever made you like this hurts.. but we need to know what happened." Tony's voice says and Becca feels a large hand encase her own. Tony was holding her hand wherever they were. "Just wake up, please. For me?" He pleads. Becca wants to cry. She wants to scream, to punch something, to release this pent up frustration and agony within her.

"Is there any change?" A new voice appears in her ears. Pepper.

"Her vitals keep dropping and then stabilizing." The unknown voice says softly, like he was thinking and contemplating what was wrong with Becca. "Shouldn't we contact Star?"

Star. That name was familiar to Becca as a nickname for her mama. A nickname her first apprentice had given her. Doctor Stephen Strange.

"I want to call mom when Reebs is awake. Not when there's still so much unknown." Tony says to Strange in reply. "Why the hell was she alone." He grumbles, it was clear to Becca even in her unconscious state that Peter was not present in the room. She would've been able to hear his heartbeat, she always could.

Becca wants to wake up. She wants to tell her brother what happened between herself and Peter. But she didn't know if she could relive it all. It still was so fresh in her mind. Peter shouting and her shouting back. Becca just wanted answers but she got so much more than she bargained for.

"Let's give her some more time to rest. Her vitals are stable again. Friday will let us know if anything changes, right?"

"Yes, Doctor Strange." Friday's voice appears in Becca's ears briefly

"Tony, we'll come see her tomorrow. Okay?" Pepper says softly to her boyfriend. She knew Tony better than she knew herself, he wasn't going to let this go until he knew every detail of what happened, even the most minuscule of details. This was his baby sister, a sister whom he cherished above all else some days. Becca was one of his three loved women in his life. Mary, Pepper and Becca. Nothing, absolutely nothing was going to stop Tony from finding out what happened to his sister.

Peter knocked on the door to the apartment. His eyes stung with tears as Aunt May opened the door in a panic. She was worried and pissed all at the same time. Peter knew he should've gone back to Becca, every fiber of his body screamed to make sure she was okay. But he fought it.

"I've been calling you and Becca all day. But neither of you answered your phones." May says, her voice wavering with panic as Peter shuts the door behind him slowly as his aunt paces in front of him. "You can't do that." She states, "Then this ferry thing happens." She rambles as Peter walks into the kitchen where she's sitting at the table. "I've called five police stations, five. I called MJ, Ned and Harry. I called Ned's mother-"

"I'm fine, Aunt May. I'm okay." Peter says softly, trying to calm her down. "Honestly, just relax. I'm fine."

When May turns around, she finally notices that Peter is alone. That Becca isn't with him and that terrifies her. "Where is Becca?"

"I- I don't know." Peter stammers, looking down at the floor. He was ashamed.

"What? What do you mean you don't know, Peter? She's your girlfriend! She's my responsibility while she's here. There are so many people out there that could hurt her." May rambles nervously.

"She-" Peter stops himself, he couldn't admit to himself that him and Becca were over.

May stands up and looks at Peter, "Cut the bullsh**." She snaps and Peter is taken aback. "I know you and Becca left detention. I know you and Becca snuck out of the hotel room in Washington. I know you sneak out of this apartment every night, sometimes with Becca and some without." She lists off and Peter pales in worry. "That's not fine." She says, "Peter, you have to tell me what's going on. Just lay it out. It's just me and you. We can go look for Becca together after."

It takes Peter everything he has to not collapse onto his knees and cry. He bites back tears as he finally admits what he was in denial of this entire time.

"Fi- Becca and I broke up." He whimpers. "And i lost the Stark Internship."

"What?" May asks confused.

Peter nods, "Yeah."

May can see that Peter was struggling to come to terms with it all. "What happened?" She asks softly.

"I got consumed with wanting to impress Mr. Stark.. and it cost me everything, Aunt May. Everything." Peter says as he crumbles into the chair beside him, "I thought i was working really hard.. and he.." He stammers. "I lost her, Aunt May.. I screwed it up."

May instantly is beside her nephew, rubbing his back slowly to try and calm him down. "It'll be okay." She whispers, though she knew it wouldn't be that simple. "Give her time."

Peter sniffles as he nods slowly, "I'm sorry I made you worry.." He whispers.

All May does is continue to hold her nephew. She knew heartbreaks were hard to overcome when you still didn't fully understand why you broke up in the first place. She knew there was a reason behind the break up. But it didn't mean it hurt any less, Peter loved Becca. Everyone knew that. And those breakups hurt the most, when both sides still love each other but won't or can't be together.

A week passed with no change to Becca's comatosed state. She could on and off hear people in her room but it was rare. She heard voices she didn't think she'd ever hear in person since the Tarmac fight. And one of those people was Rhodey.

"A day doesn't go by when I don't regret not stepping in to help you." Rhodey says to Becca's sleeping form. When Tony had called him to say Becca was in a coma, he dropped everything. He knew she hadn't forgiven him, hell, he hadn't forgiven himself. He was so stuck with following the orders of those higher than him, the duty of serving. That it had blinded him.

He didn't know if Mary even had forgiven him either. The woman that had watched him grow from a smartass middle schooler to the man he is now. The woman he was happy to call a mother figure, he had let her be handcuffed and restrained. He had forbidden anyone to interfere with Becca's arrest. Her screams of pain and agony still rang in his ears at night.

"I regret not stopping them from hurting you, from taking you away from Mama Ree. For muzzling you." Rhodey says and Becca feels a dip in the bed where her arm rests and she knew he had put his elbows beside her arm. "I regret everything. Nothing is worth seeing you suffer."

Becca wants to talk to him, to her Uncle Rhodey whom she knew loved her so much. She fought so hard with her body to wake up. And for once, she won the fight.

"I forgive you." A raspy voice appears in Rhodey's ears and his eyes snap open to see Becca's crystal blue eyes staring at him.

"B-Becca?" He stammers with a sorrowful chuckle. "D- Don't say anything or move, i'm going to get your brother and Doctor Strange." Rhodey says with a smile that would light up any room. He stands and Becca notices her uncle's legs. Her uncle was crippled, but with the help of her brother she assumed, Rhodey was walking.

The niece nods weakly and does't say anything more. She physically couldn't, her throat was extremely dry.

"Reebs?!" Tony's voice rings out from the hallway and into her room. Her blue eyes look over to see her brother with a happy but worried look on his face. "Lordie, I was starting to think you'd never wake up." He says with a weak and teary smile. A man she had only heard by name follows Tony into the room, the man she assumed was Doctor Stephen Strange. Her mama's first apprentice.

"Rebecca? Try and move your fingers and toes for me, alright?" Stephen says and Becca does what she's told as best she can. She moves all ten fingers and toes, pleasing the doctor. "Good, both sides of her brain are functioning." He confirms as he hands her a cup of water up to her lips, "Drink." Becca drinks the water and coughs slightly, finally feeling like her voice is back a little.

"Reebs.. What happened?" Tony asks worriedly.

"Be-" Becca stops herself as tears brim her eyes, the head of her bed slowly rises and she looks over slowly to see Stephen raising her to an upright position. "Peter and I got into a horrible fight after what happened at the ferry." Becca whispers, her voice was still coming back but she could speak.

Tony's eyes widen in shock, "You two fought?" He questions, not believing it. The two were always conjoined at the hip and so in love. Couples fought, that was normal, but for a fight to cause Becca's body to shut down was not something he thought was possible.

Becca nods her head slightly, "And then.. he-" She says softly as tears fall from her eyes, she couldn't stop them even if she tried. "He broke up with me."

"What? Reebs.." Tony mutters in disbelief. He knew his sister would never lie to him, or to anyone for that matter. But what she was saying was hard to believe. "That doesn't seem possible in my mind."

"Well it happened." Becca says slightly harsher than she wanted it to. "He- he left me there, and then the next thing i know is Karen is telling me i need medical attention." She explains and Tony's eyes widen.

"Is that the last thing you remember, Rebecca?" Stephen asks cautiously. The teenager nods slowly, "It's been a week since then."

"A- A week?" Becca stammers. To her, it felt like it was only a few hours, maybe a day. "What's happened since then.."

"Midtown had their homecoming just yesterday." Tony says, "Your friends were texting you asking where you'd been. They had caught on that something had happened with you and Peter." He says, handing her her phone. "You have some good friends, Reebs." Becca felt hurt that she had missed homecoming. Something that she wanted to experience with her friends, with Peter. But all of that was shot down the moment Peter uttered the words that seemed to destroy Becca's entire reality.

She nodded in agreement, "They're the best." She mumbles, slowly picking up her phone and scrolling through what seemed to be the endless amount of texts from MJ, Harry and Ned.

Six days ago.

Richie Rich
You okay, Becca?
Peter looks so depressed in school today.

Ginger Lives Matter
He wouldn't talk to any of us.
Is everything okay?

Thing 2
This isn't like you guys to not be together.
Something happened.

Richie Rich
He muted the chat.
I'm going to ask Pete what happened.

Five days ago.

Thing 2
Pete said you two broke up?
How in the world is that even possible.
I'm in denial.

Ginger Lives Matter
He wouldn't even tell us why
you two aren't together anymore.

Richie Rich
You aren't answering us either, Sof.
We just want to know you're okay.

Thing 2
He did say that Mr. Stark took
his suit away though.
Does all of this correlate to that?

Ginger Lives Matter
I was thinking the same thing, Ned.
But please, Bec, talk to us.
Please.

Four days ago.

Richie Rich
Peter's slowly talking to us again.
Ned and I helped him finish the Lego Death Star.

Thing 2
We wish you were here to see it.
It looks cool.

Ginger Lives Matter
Aunt May's worried but she got a call
from Mr. Stark saying you're with him.
Are you taking care of yourself?

Thing 2
Peter's worried about you.
He won't say it but we all know he is.
We don't know what happened between you two
and we don't want to pry, but Peter's miserable.

Richie Rich
We're not defending him..
We're just worried about the both of you.

Ginger Lives Matter
You two obviously are supposed to be together
but something drove you two away and that sucks ass.

Thing 2
MJ!

Ginger Lives Matter
It does!
You can't tell me or anyone else
that this doesn't suck.
Our best friends are hurting.

Richie Rich
Just give us something, Sof..
Anything telling us you're okay.

Three days ago.

Ginger Lives Matter
Homecoming is in two days.
Peter's agreed to go with us and Liz is joining.
You and I talked about homecoming so much.
It doesn't seem fair that you're missing it.
I miss you.

Two days ago.

Ginger Lives Matter
Mr. Stark stopped by to pick up some
things from yours and Peter's room.

Thing 2
I could've sworn i saw Peter nearly lose it when
Mr. Stark took Mr Stuffington from your bed.
Your Avengers blanket too.

Richie Rich
We've been keeping Pete company so he
doesn't go insane without you,
which we all know he would.

Ginger Lives Matter
Please.. talk to us.

Yesterday

Richie Rich
Homecoming is boring without the entire group.

Thing 2
Liz even joined us, MJ invited her.

Ginger Lives Matter
Liz's dad offered to drive us to school for the dance.
Peter seemed shaken as he stepped out of Mr. Toomes's car.

An hour later

Thing 2
Liz's dad is the bad guy!

Richie Rich
The three of us are keeping watch and
Ned hacked the school's computer.

Thing 2
Guy in the chair.

Ginger Lives Matter
Ned almost got busted too.
One of the teachers came in.

Richie Rich
Porn? Seriously, Ned?
That was your first answer to tell the teacher?

Thing 2
I was freaking out!

Ginger Lives Matter
Peter's fighting Mr Toomes alone without his suit though!
I know you two aren't on speaking terms
but he could use your help.

Becca's eyes widen as she read through the strings of texts from her friends. She then looks over at her brother, "Peter fought the Vulture?" She asks, "I missed so much."

Tony nods, "Yeah, Toomes tried to steal from me. Happy was moving the last bit of stuff from the Tower and bird wannabe tried to steal my stuff. The kid stopped him though." The brother explains as best he could without making his sister upset.

Becca knows her friends were worried, so she began trying to move her fingers as best she could to form a text back

Miss America
Hi, guys.
I'm sorry about being absent.

Thing 2
She's alive!

Ginger Lives Matter
Are you okay?!
Where have you been?!

Miss America
I've been at the Avengers compound upstate.
Since the breakup..
I've been okay as i can be.
But i'm better than i was.

Richie Rich
We were so worried about you.
Have you been taking care of yourself?

Miss America
My Mama's first apprentice, Doctor Strange,
has been taking care of me.
I wasn't able to the past week.
But i'm better now!
I love you guys.

Thing 2
I wish we could see you.
But if you're busy then we get it.

Ginger Lives Matter
We love you too, Becca.
So does Peter.

Becca felt better after talking with her friends, even just for a few minutes. She felt like a weight was lifted slightly off her shoulders. "So what happens now then?" She asks her brother softly.

"That's what i'm trying to figure out." Tony replies. "And none of my decisions concerning Peter will be biased to you." He reassures his sister. "He proved that he didn't need the suit to be the hero he was meant to be."

Becca hesitates, looking down at her phone, "He didn't need me." She mumbles.

"He did it for you. To prove that he could be the hero you knew he always was." Tony corrects her, "He just needed a push, I guess."

Three days later after Spider-Man had taken down Vulture, Becca was making progress in her recovery with Rhodey and Stephen helping her. She had started rehab to get her limbs moving normally again.

She had been living in the compound without even knowing it until she had woken up and Vision floated through a wall and the teenager screamed. Safe to say that Vision now knocks when he pays Becca a visit.

She was walking down the hallway of the compound when she heard her brother, Happy and a voice that made her heart ache instantly.

"Sorry, i took your suit." Tony says, "I mean, you had it coming." He adds and Becca pokes her head out from the hallway to see Peter and Tony talking. "Actually, it turns out it was the perfect tough love moment you needed, right? To urge you on? Wouldn't you think?"

"I guess.." Peter mumbles.

"Let's just say it was, because as your mentor I'm proud of you. But as an older brother, I'm still pissed." He states to the kid.

"Mr. Stark, I really-" Peter starts to speak but Tony cuts him off.

"You screwed the pooch hard, bigtime. But then you did the right thing in terms of heroism. Took the dog to the free clinic, you raised the hybrid puppies. All right, not my best analogy." Tony comments as he and Peter walk into a hallway and the walls light up with blueprint designs. "I was wrong about you. I think, with a little more mentoring, you could be a nice asset to the team." The brother/mentor says as he pats Peter on his arms as they walk up to a door with the Avengers symbol.

"T-T- To the team?" Peter stammers in shock.

Becca smiles softly, though her heart was nowhere near mending from the pain Peter had caused her when he broke up with her, she was happy for him. He finally had achieved that he had dreamed about for so long.

"Yeah. Anyway, there's about fifty reporters behind that door. Real ones, not bloggers." Tony says as he taps his watch and the door with the Avengers symbol opens up to reveal a new Spider-Man suit, an Iron Spider suit. "When you're ready, why don't you try that on? And i'll introduce the world to the newest official member of the Avengers. Spider-Man." Tony says as he stands beside the Iron Spider suit nonchalantly, his hands in his pockets.

Peter steps forward in disbelief and shock, not completely understanding what was happening. "I- heh." Peter breathes out nervously. He thought Tony would kill him in all honesty, he had broken Becca's heart which in turn broke his own. But he knew that they needed this time apart, though it hurt them both, he knew that he needed to prove to himself certain things. He wanted to be a better man for her. Not a naive boy who wanted to be a superhero so badly that he was willing to give up everything.

"So after the press conference, Happy will show you to your room, your new quarters. Where's he between?" Tony asks Happy but then looks around, "He's next to Vision?"

"Yeah, Vision's not big on doors." Happy comments.

"That's fun." Tony mutters.

"Or walls." Happy adds.

Peter was still in so much shock that when he finally makes up his mind, it's for the right reasons and not because he was to be a superhero like Tony and Becca's family. He glances back at the Iron Spider Suit once more before giving Tony his answer, "Thank you, Mr. Stark, but i'm good." Peter says and it shocks Becca to her very core from where she stands in hiding.

Tony cocks his head in confusion, "You're good? How are you good?"

"Well, I- I mean, I'd rather just stay on the ground for a little longer. Friendly neighborhood Spider Man." Peter forces a small smile, "Somebody's gotta look out for the little guy, right?" He says.

Tony takes his sunglasses off to look at Peter more clearly, "You turning me down?" He questions, then motions to the Iron Spider suit, "You better think about this. Look at that." He states as Peter turns to look at the suit, "Look at me. Last chance, yes or no?"

"No." Peter says proudly of himself for making the choice of stepping away from what he thought he wanted. His life had been centered around Becca, around being a hero. And though his heart ached for Becca to be with him again, the two of them came to realize on their own that they needed the time apart to make a path in the world for themselves, by themselves. And if the fates of the universe would one day bring them back together, then they would accept without question.

"Okay." Tony mutters, then shrugs his shoulders sofly, "It's kind of Springsteen-y working class hero vibe that i dig." He says, then looks at Peter again, "I know you and my sister broke things off on bad terms." He mutters and Peter's eyes widen slightly, "Clearing the air is something i like to take part in." He states and nods his head towards the hallway Becca was standing in, watching from a distance. "Afterwards, Happy will take you home."

The driver nods in agreement, then Peter blankly stares at the two men before walking towards where he hears Becca's heartbeat.

Becca looks over and sees the love of her life. But whom she's not with anymore. They both want to be together, but they also know that they need to figure out their lives before that can happen this time around.

"H- Hi.." Peter mumbles softly, "Are you okay?" He asks Becca as she looks up at the man she loves.

"I am now.." She mumbles softly, "What happened- it-" Becca stammers, not knowing how to tell Peter that their breakup caused her to be in a coma for a week. She didn't want him to feel guilty though she knew he probably did already.

"I'm sorry about everything, about how i said it all.. but.. I'm not sorry that I said it." Peter says softly, his hand goes to the back of his neck, rubbing it nervously as he waits for Becca's reaction and response.

Becca hesitates but nods slowly. "I never wanted that to happen.. to fight.." She mumbles, "But i'm not sorry i said what i said either."

"I am sorry for saying you were less important than impressing Mr. Stark.. and about how you would never get a normal life.." Peter says softly, "I never should've said those things, but i was angry.. i was upset that you were lashing out just like i was.." Peter mumbles as he tries to explain himself as best he could. "It was uncalled for."

Becca nods slowly, "It's okay but also not okay." She tells him quietly. She leans against the wall as she hears her brother talk to Happy and Pepper about things but then focuses her mind back to Peter. "You were right though, about me never going to achieve having a normal life. I was in denial that it was true." She points out.

"You're life has been full of so much hardship.." Peter mutters, "It's not unreasonable to want a normal life after what you've been through." He reminds her. "I just want us to be okay.." He mumbles a weak smile appearing on his lips, "We were friends before we dated."

Becca nods, a small smile on her face, "I know.. and we were both scared of confessing our feelings to each other in fear of losing that friendship."

"Until your godmother told us to take the leap of faith and try." Peter says softly, his hand lightly grasping Becca's. They could both feel the sparks of affection from the contact of hands, but they had to deny themselves it. "But.."

"But now it's time for us to take the leap of faith for ourselves.. not together.." Becca says, finishing Peter's thought. The boy nods in agreement. "I heard what happened with Vulture.. I- I'm proud of you.."

Peter smiles softly in appreciation, "I had to do it for myself more than anyone else.. to prove to myself that i didn't need to depend on anyone or anything." He says proudly. He felt better, better than he had in awhile, the journey to get to this point was hard and painful, but he and Becca knew this was the better path for them.

Because if they were to grow as individuals, then they needed to do that on their own. To not be compared or to be codependent.

"That's good." Becca mumbles.

"So.. what're you doing now?" Peter asks, "You missed a week of school.. and homecoming.."

Becca hesitates, looking down at her shoes as she contemplates her answer. "It wasn't my intention to miss it. But things happened that were out of my control." She explains to the best of her ability without outright saying their breakup had comatosed her. "All that we did with Vulture.. it made me realize that i had dark demons in my past that still haunt me."

"The Red Room?" Peter asks, concerned.

She nods in agreement, "I didn't realize how much those years haunted me until recently.. Papa struggles with it a lot and so does Uncle Steve.."

"What do you mean?"

"I have PTSD." Becca says, "Doctor Strange diagnosed it two days ago.. i told him everything and he concluded to that result." She explains, looking up at Peter softly. His gaze to her was soft and concerned. "But i'm working to try and manage it as best i can."

"I know you can work through it." Peter says, trying to encourage her. "You're the strongest person i know." He compliments her softly. He steps forward slightly and presses his lips to her forehead in a goodbye. Both of them stay that way for what feels like hours as they both reconcile their emotions towards the other.

"I love you, Peter." Becca mumbles softly.

Peter closes his eyes as he releases Becca's forehead, his head touching hers as they embrace. "I love you too, Becca." He whispers to her in reply.

Hours later Becca is sound asleep in her room that Tony had set up for her in the Compound. She held Mr Stuffington tightly in her arms as a window opened itself and a figure slipped into her room silently. The figure walked over to the girl quietly and sat on the edge of her bed, a soft hand grazed the girl's leg in an attempt to wake her up.

A voice Becca hadn't heard in nearly a year startled her from her sleep. She would've thought she was dreaming had it not been for the fact that a chill ran through her room due to the opened window. Her eyesight slowly adjusted to the darkness aside from her night light of stars on the ceiling shining dimly.

"Who- What's going on?" Becca asked softly. She wasn't afraid of the figure, she knew the voice. But why was the person here?

"Keep quiet, Маленький волк." Little Wolf. Natasha Romanoff's voice whispered softly.

"Aun- Auntie Nat?" Becca stammered quietly, "What're you doing here?"

"I need your help."

"What?"

"I'm going on the run. And i thought you'd like space from all of here." Natasha asks her niece softly.

"Space? The run? Auntie Nat... What's going on?" Becca asks quietly, she had so many questions rattling and running through her mind.

Natasha smiled at her niece, pushing some hair from her face behind her ears. Nat could tell Becca was conflicted about leaving Tony and everyone. But she had a plan and a tight schedule. She needed Becca to agree or decline. "I can explain everything on the way. How about it, Маленький волк?" Little Wolf. Nat whispered with a hopeful smile, "You and me time?"

Becca hesitates, if she left with her aunt, she didn't know when she would see her family again, her friends. She would be leaving everything behind that she knows. But something within Becca screamed that her aunt needed her. The aunt that was once her sister, and she knew her answer.

"Yes."

Fearless is complete.

Whaaaat?

My precious bby's first book is done. And her next book wont be out anytime soon because Marvel and Disney keep DELAYING Black Widow's release instead of forgoing the revenue they would make at the box office.

JUST PUT BLACK WIDOW ON DISNEY+
STOP DELAYING THE REST OF PHASE 4

I swear..

But in other news!

Becca's next book, Reckless will take place during Black Widow, Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame and Spider Man: FFH.
So lots there to unpack and dive into!

I hate that i broke my bbies up, but in retrospect, it was what they needed to grow as individuals and create their own paths.
And i hate to break this to y'all, but the next time our bbies see each other is in Infinity War. Which only means tears and agony await us.

Now that Fearless is done, i can update Limitless, which is Mary's third and final book. My sweet Mama Bear.
I'm still dreading that.. but i'm excited nonetheless for it!

Thank you so much for sticking with Becca and her journey through all of this! She's very dear to me and i love her to pieces. I love all of your comments and votes! Most of the time your comments make my day and so thank you to all of you who have commented!
