31. Memories

Abraham was the first to notice the couple as they jog up to the Decathlon team all standing around the bus. Becca was feeling nervous about her and Peter coming on the trip. She felt like she was using the decathlon as an excuse to follow the thugs to Maryland, and she was right. But Peter only saw one goal, catch the bad guys. She could only do and say so much to deter him from that goal. He wanted so badly to impress her brother that it clouded his mind and judgement, and that scared Becca.

"Hey, Peter, Rebecca." Liz greets them with a confused look on her face. Ned standing behind the captain was giving the couple a small thumbs up in encouragement.

"I was hoping I could rejoin the team." Peter says, then motions to Becca for her to add her own, not wanting to speak for her.

"I could maybe be a backup?" She asks nervously, "I want to be of help in some way." Becca adds. She can feel eyes on her more so than before she hit Flash.

And speaking of broken noses, Flash pushes his way through the crowd, "No, no way. You guys can't quit on us, stroll up and be welcomed back by everyone."

Becca opens her mouth to speak but Mr Harrington beats her to it as he steps off the bus, "Hey, welcome back you two!" He greets Peter and Becca with a big smile. "Flash, you're back to first alternate."

"Mr Harrington, sir? I was hoping just to be of use, not be on the team if that was alright?" Becca says softly, looking up at her teacher.

Mr Harrington thinks it over briefly then nods, "Of course, Rebecca. We're happy to have you in any way." He tells her and she smiles softly, "That means Flash is second alternate." The teacher says.

Flash's eyes widen as he stares at their teacher, "What?"

"Peter's taking your place on the team, and Rebecca is taking your place as first alternate." Abraham quips to the bully and Becca can picture steam coming out of Flash's ears in her mind as he takes in that he was bumped, not only once, but twice from the team.

"Excuse me, can we go already? I was hoping to get in some light protesting in front of one of the embassies before dinner." Michelle comments as she steps out from within the crowd of students. Becca turns to look over at her old friend but Michelle quickly turns away, leaving Becca feeling uneasy.

Peter pulls Becca from her thoughts by taking her hand into his own, offering a smile when she looks up at him.

"Protesting is patriotic. Let's get on the bus." Mr Harrington says as Flash rips off his Decathlon jacket and throws it at Peter.

"Focus up, everyone. Our next topic is the moons of Saturn." Liz says as the bus passes a sign that says they were nearing Baltimore. Ned  and Peter were keeping Becca busy when the team wasn't practicing their drills and it made her feel like she was bonding more with Ned than she had in the past.

They pass more signs and the team continues their drills when Peter answers a question. "Uh, strontium, barium, vibranium." Peter calls out after ringing his bell. He beams at Becca when Liz says that it was correct. She could tell he enjoyed being on the team more than he let on, but superheroing had taken over his life since her brother came into the picture.

"Top thing you wanna do in your life, like, exploring." Ned questions Becca, "Where do you wanna go."

The girl thinks, she'd never thought about this before. She had places she wanted to visit around the world but never put much thought into seeing those places. She had seen quite a bit of the world when she and her father were on the run. But they never had time to look at the place they were in. Never taking the time to appreciate it.

"There's a lot of places i'd like to visit, and revisit." She says with a small smile as she sits criss cross on the bus seat, facing Ned as Peter sat on the edge of the same seat while Ned hung his arms and head on the back of the seat.

"Revisit?" Ned asks curiously, "So you've been to places before?"

Becca nods, "I've been to many places, but i never got to appreciate them because i was on the run with Papa." She replies, "So i'd like to revisit some of those places." She tells Ned as Peter looks at her.

"We'll go." He promises her, he wasn't sure how they'd be able to go. But he'd take her anywhere she wanted to go, "Top five places you wanna visit, Fia, go."

"Greece, Italy, France, Scotland, umm.. Egypt, Austria and Russia." Becca mutters, her voice wavering when she sas Russia. "Oh, that's more than five.." She mumbles. She hadn't been back in that country since she was escorted out and moved to DC with her father when they were still under Hydra.

"Russia? But weren't you held captive there?" Ned questions innocently.

Becca nods, "It might hurt to go back there, but i want to try to see it in a different light.. i know Russia isn't all bad, i was just subjected to the worst of it." She answers honestly, "And i'd like to visit my parents and family again sometime soon hopefully." She says, her fingers grazing over her Kimoyo beads around her wrist slowly.

Peter takes her hand into his own to help make her smile, and it works. "Do you want to go to Austria because of your mom's mentor?" He asks curiously.

Becca nods, "I want to see Dr Erskine's homeland. He meant a lot to Mama and Uncle Steve, Mama literally named me after his daughter."

"Why the other places?" Ned asks curiously.

Becca smiles, "Well, for starters I speak all of those languages." She laughs, "That was one thing I liked about being in the Red Room, was learning the different languages. It grew into wanting to know about the cultures those languages come from." She states as Ned just stares at her with an awestruck expression.

"You're so cool." He mutters and Becca giggles, shaking her head. "Tell me something cool in one of those languages."

"Ned." Peter says but Becca shakes her head, looking at him with a smile.

"Тони Старк втайне любит фильмы, от которых люди плачут." Tony Stark secretly loves movies that make people cry. She says in Russian, she had meant to say it in a different language, but Russian came just as naturally as English did.

Ned just stares at her more, chuckling, "What'd you say?" He asks.

"Buddy likes movies that make people cry." Becca says with a laugh, "Mama and I watched one with him when i was home, before Ultron." She explains, laughing wistfully at the memory.

Before Ned can say anything else, Peter's phone goes off with Happy's face appearing on the screen. Becca looks at him as he stands to tell Liz they need to take the phone call, "Can I take this real quick? I'll only be a sec." Peter says to their captain. Peter walks to the back of the bus and Becca follows him.

"Got a blip on my screen here. You and Miss Barnes left New York?" Happy answers into the phone.

Peter pulls his phone away and Becca nods in agreement, "Tracker." They say in unison.

"Uh, yeah, it's just a school trip." Peter explains quickly, "Look, Happy, i gotta say, you tracking us without our permission is a violation of our privacy." He tells the bodyguard and driver but Becca pulls the tracking hologram from her pocket and Peter shakes his head, "That's different." He whispers to her.

"What's different?" Happy questions, indicating to the couple that Happy had overheard them.

"Nothing. Look, it's just the Academic Decathlon. Fia and I are on the team, it's no big deal." Peter says.

"Hey, hey. I'll decide if it's no big deal." Happy states, a long pause is held between them before he finally answers, "Sounds like it's no big deal, but remember. I'm watching you." The driver says before he hangs up.

As the bus drives over the bridge and into Washington D.C. Becca can't help but feel uneasy. The last time she was here, bad things happened to her family and the world. Shield and Hydra were taken down together and her Father was announced alive after seventy years of being presumed dead. As she looks over at the water below them on the bridge, her mind travels back to when the helicarriers were destroyed. When she witnessed her father and uncle fight in a way she never wanted to witness ever again.

She saw some of the monuments that she remembered passing by all too quickly last time she was here with her aunt and uncles. She remembers being attacked on the freeway by her father. She remembers too much.

"Fia, hey. You okay?" Peter says, placing his hands on her shoulders and gently pulls her away from the window of where they're sitting, "You looked like you were remembering something." He mutters softly.

Becca nods slowly, "I was.." She mumbles, looking down at her Kimoyo beads for comfort as she leaned into Peter's touch. "The last time i was here in D.C.. it was when everything broke about Hydra, about my Papa.."

Peter's eyes widen in realization. He had completely forgotten she was even a part of all of that when it happened. He remembered watching the three helicarriers crash into the Potomac on the news. "You were a part of that."

Becca nods again, "I was in one of the helicarriers when all three went down." She says softly, "I remember fighting Papa because he was Winter at that time. I remember thinking how i had just found my Mama again after so many decades apart and then watching her become limp in my arms as we hugged. I remember watching the doctors try to bring her back to life but they couldn't. I remember the shattering feeling i felt when Uncle Steve's hands clutched onto my shoulders for support as he watched his sister die."

"Mary died? But how? She's alive now." Peter asks questions quickly. She had never talked about when she was found by her mother and her uncle, but being back in D.C. changed all that for her. She wanted to get it off her mind and off her chest.

"An injection that Uncle Bruce created.. I don't remember the name." She mumbles in reply, "It slowed Mama's heartbeat down to one beat per minute."

"Whoa." Peter mutters, "We have some free time after we sign into the hotel.. do you want to look around?" He asks, "Ned could probably come if you want the company."

Becca hesitates, then nods slowly, "There is one place I want to go see."

"What is it?"

"Mama and Uncle Steve's old apartment." Becca says softly, "I have something there that i need to get."

"Are you sure we should be doing this, Becca? This seems like breaking and entering." Ned rambles as Becca walks casually down the hallway towards her mother's apartment that was still owned by her to the best of the daughter's knowledge.

"It's not breaking and entering when your mama owns the apartment, we just don't have a key." Becca retorts as they walk up to the apartment door. "Here." She says softly as she pulls out a small lock pick kit from her backpack that Tony had placed in there for whatever reason, she was grateful though in this moment that he had. She picks the lock with ease, as if it was second nature to her to break into buildings. She slowly pushes open the door and her eyes instantly see the bullet holes that she and her father had put through the wall when they thought they had killed Fury and Mary.

"This place looks like it came straight out of the forties but with a slight modern twist.." Ned mutters in awe as the two boys wander through the house slowly and cautiously. The two of them in awe that they were in the apartment of Mary and Steve Rogers. The house had not been touched except for the dishes. Becca knew her mother must have had those taken care of, but everything else was the same as if it was still lived in. A men's leather jacket laid draped over a chair that faced the counter of the kitchen. Various books were still everywhere, blankets laid on the couch as if they had just been used. But Becca could tell from the dust that the apartment hadn't been lived in for a few years.

Becca chuckles but her eyes stay focused on the wall and the boys finally notice and follow her line of sight. "Are those.. bullet holes?" Peter asks cautiously.

The girlfriend nods solemnly, "I put two of those through the wall. Papa did the others." Becca mutters quietly. "This was where Mama and Uncle Steve lived until the events of Shield and Hydra in 2014." She tells them, "Mama still owns it just in case she ever comes by D.C.." She says with a smile but she slowly loses her smile as she realizes her mother won't come back here for a long time if things with the governments were still on bad terms.

The boys just stare at Becca in awe and shock. Peter knew her past slightly, but Ned knew none of it for the most part. He had only seen the events of D.C. in 2014 on his tv, but the girl in front of them? She lived it. She was a part of it all. She was an aide in the destruction. "That's the past, Fia." Peter says, pulling her into his arms slowly. "I know being here is bringing up a lot of memories but we're here for a reason, right?" He says, trying his best to reassure his girlfriend without prying into her past. But it was difficult to love someone but not know their past completely.

"Where would the thing you're looking for be?" Ned asks, wanting to help in any way he can; and also get the tension out of the room to help his friend.

Becca smiles softly at both boys, she gently pecks Peter's lips with her own and pulls away from him. She walks over to Ned and smiles at him, hugging him tightly in thanks. Ned grins and hugs Becca back.

"It would most likely be in Mama's room." Becca says softly, thinking of where the item she was looking for would be. She breaks from Ned and begins to walk down the hallway, passing by her Uncle's room and feeling her heart clench with remorse and regret.

She stands in the doorway and time seems to stand still, she had never seen her uncle's room before, but she knew it was his without needing to think about it. The bed was neatly made to perfection, the beige and white comforter with matching white sheets that Becca just knew her mother abhorred because of the lack of personality and color. The small amount of pillows that matched the comforter were placed on the bed. The photos on the dresser were placed with care. There was an empty place above his bed that looked like it could hold his shield when he wasn't on duty.

The shield that now belonged to her brother.

A hand presses itself on the small of her back, drawing her from her thoughts and she turns to see Peter looking down at her with a soft expression. "Is this Cap's room?" He asks quietly.

"Yes." Becca replies. "Mama always said that the Army made him finally learn how to properly make a bed." She teased softly, an airily chuckle escapes her lips as she recalls the memory.

"This is so cool." Ned mutters from behind the couple, causing them to jump in surprise and turn to look at their friend.

"Let's keep looking." Peter suggests and gently guides Becca away from her Uncle's room and he shuts the door.

When the three reach Mary's room, Becca steps in first. She sees her mother's touch everywhere in the room, from the paint of the walls to the placement of shoes by the open door. Pictures of Mary's life hung on the walls and lined the dresser, much like Steve's. They were brother and sister. It had been years since this room was touched, but Becca could still see the creases in the bed where her mother slept, the smell of the perfume she would wear was still lingering in the air slightly. And neatly placed in the center of the made bed was what Becca was looking for.

"What're we looking for again?" Ned asks curiously as Peter and Ned step into the room following Becca. Both boys felt like they were entering a sacred space, that they shouldn't be here.

"Him." Becca says as her vision becomes fuzzy as she slowly steps to the right side of her mother's bed. She slowly takes the item in her hands, "I missed you." She whispers to the object.

After seventy years and counting, Mr Stuffington was finally reunited with his long lost owner.

"A stuffed bear?" Peter asks as he steps over to her girlfriend. He was confused but he knew that with Becca, everything was important. This bear meant something to his flower.

"From my childhood. Papa had won Mr Stuffington for Mama before they ever started dating. She kept him for her children, which ended up being me." Becca asks softly, holding the bear close to her chest. "I haven't seen him since the night I was ripped away from my bed. The night that Mama lost me." She explains as she fixes his bow tie around his neck, smiling as a tear falls down her cheek.

Peter moves his finger to wipe the tear away from Becca's cheek as she pulls her into his arms, "He's home now." Peter tells his love. "He's back with you." Becca nods in agreement as she tightly clings to her bear, leaning into Peter's embrace.

"I never thought i'd see him again. I never thought I'd see anyone ever again." She whispers softly, "All those decades in the Red Room made me think I would just be trapped there forever."

"But you're not." Ned comments as he looks around the room of his friend's mother. Internally he was freaking out that he was standing in Mary Rogers-Barnes's bedroom, but now was not the time to freak out. He offers a small smile to Becca as she and Peter look over to their friend. "You got out. And now you're here, back in D.C. for something fun. The memories might hurt as they come back, but don't forget to make new ones."

Peter smiles at his best friend, then looks down at his girlfriend, "Come on. We still have a few hours to spare."

"Where are we going?" Becca asks with a confused expression on her face as she clings to Mr Stuffington with one arm and Peter pulls her free arm.

"To make new memories to help with the old ones." Peter says as they walk out Mary's room, closing the door behind them.

"Was there anything else you wanted to grab before we left?" Ned asks Becca who pauses and stops walking, pulling her wrist out of Peter's grasp as she stands in the living room where the shooting took place. She glances around and sees pictures of her mother she'd never seen before. Pictures of her uncle and father, pictures of her commando uncles as well. She quickly grabs them off the mantle and shelves, placing them in her backpack.

"Mama would like these back, I know it." Becca mutters with a small smile. As she moves away from the shelves, she notices the sun hit something shiny in the wall. Her eyes widen in shock when she steps over to where her bullet holes were and sees one embedded into the wall. A bullet that was meant for her mother "I can't believe it's here." She whispers as she pulls out the tool kit Tony had also placed in her new backpack. She pulls out plyers and sets Mr Stuffington down on the couch along with her backpack. Becca carefully takes out the bullet from the wall, her heart is racing rapidly as she stares at it.

Her mind flashes memories of the night she shot her mother. The adrenaline of it all, her Uncle chasing them on the rooftops. The fear of being left by her father but also being caught by Captain America. The relief of finding her family again after decades of being apart. Then the sheer agony of realizing her mother was dying because of the orders Becca had been given.

"Fia!" Peter shouts as Becca snaps out of her memories. She glances around the room, Peter's hands on her shoulders as he holds her close, "You were trembling and not answering me when I said your name the first few times." He mutters softly.

"I- I'm sorry." Becca mumbles, "I couldn't stop it." She whispers as she clings to her boyfriend. "The memories are so strong."

"I know they are." He whispers softly in reply. Peter watches cautiously as Becca places the bullet into a small baggie from her backpack. "You're keeping it?" Peter asks, "You're not worried about the memories coming back and hurting you?"

Becca shakes her head, "I am. I'm terrified actually, but i can't let that stop me from overcoming it."

"Hell yeah." Ned says from the front doorway with a small smile.

Becca places her backpack on her shoulders and grabs Mr Stuffington. Holding onto him tightly, she and Peter make their way out of the apartment that restarted Becca's life only a few years ago.
