16. Bruises

Becca watches as her uncles and mother reach the sub level she was on, still locked inside her containment unit as Steve lifted up the doctor who was no doctor. He was a mad man responsible for ruining her father's progress in gaining who he was back. When Mary's hazel eyes spot her daughter, she gasps, "Becca!" Mary shouted, rushing over to her daughter as quickly as she could.

Becca squirmed in her chair, her wrists still pinned by the cuffs, "M-Mama!" She exclaims, "Th- The doctor! He triggered Papa!" She shouts as her uncle breaks open the door, prying the cuffs off his niece as well. The second Becca is free, she wraps her arms around her mother, never wanting to be separated from her again.

Mary embraced her daughter tightly, kissing the side of her head, "What do you mean?" She asked.

Becca tries not to let her panic show as she attempts to explain, "He knew Papa's tigger words. The words that unleash the Winter Solider." She states, scanning her surroundings carefully, "He hasn't left. We have to knock him out but it'll be hard because as Winter, he's ten times stronger." She states, looking up at her uncle as he caresses her head briefly, attempting to calm her down.

"We'll do all the we can, B." He reassures his niece. Sam walks out of the containment room. He barely is able to dodge the punch thrown his way by Winter, surprising the family. Sam dodges once more but Winter grabs his throat tightly, and throws him over his shoulder against the containment unit.

Steve and Becca both step in front of Mary, they knew that if Mary tried to fight Winter, she would die. But the others had a chance at subduing him. "Mary, stay behind us. If we can get him restrained maybe you can trigger Buck to come back." Steve says to his sister as Winter turns to face the uncle and niece. Mary nods, scrambling away from them as Winter engages with Steve. The uncle walking backwards quickly as he can to avoid the punches Winter is throwing. He manages to dodge in time but Winter lands a kick on Steve's chest, sending him backwards into the adjacent room. Becca tries to advance her father, but he hears her coming, solely focused on the man, his brother, before him. He grabs Becca by her hair, yanking her harshly away and tosses her against the cement wall.

Becca gasps for air as she tries to sit up, she watches as her uncle and father fight again. Steve still walking backwards to avoid Winter's advances, he dodges punches but Winter throws another kick. This time, pinning Steve against the elevator doors. Winter forces his metal hand towards Steve, attempting to push him down the elevator shaft. But Steve braces himself, his hands colliding with Winter's metal one, using all the strength he can muster to push back. Winter releases some pressure on his fight against Steve, only to come back stronger. He unleashes one last punch to Steve's chest, the elevator doors break open and Steve is sent tumbling down the shaft. "Steve, no!" Mary screams from her spot beside Becca's unconscious uncle.

Becca stands up as quickly she can, finding her second wind. She jumps, kicking off the wall and lands on Winter's shoulders. She wraps her legs around her father as tightly as she can. Becca uses the momentum she gained and flips her and her father onto the ground. Winter manages to get his metal around around one of her legs, attempting to pry her legs apart before he loses airflow. The teenager yells in frustration as she fights against her father's strength. "Papa, please!" She shouts. Winter senses her weakening and jumps onto his feet. He grabs Becca by her arm and throws her against a wall once more.

Becca can hear her mother call her as she blinks her eyes, trying to stay conscious. She watches her father stalk over to her mother. Mary tries to plead with him and the daughter sees his eyes flicker briefly, Becca's mother has her arms raised in surrender, watching her husband as she pleads with him once more. Winter ignores her pleas as he grabs her by the arm roughly with his metal hand. Mary yelps in the jolt of pain shooting from her arm and Becca notices her father grimace. the teenager tries to stand as Winter hits a pressure point on Mary's neck, knocking her unconscious and lifting her into his arms.

Becca looks over as she watches her father walk away with her unconscious mother. She notices Sam lifting his head, they both turn to look over at the elevator where Steve went down. Seeing the doctor, her eyes narrow as she tries to stand up. She grunts as pain in her back shoots up and down her spine. But she has to ignore it. She pushes towards her uncle Sam, helping him stand up, he watches the doctor intently, "Hey." He calls out to the doctor, he stands up quickly. The uncle and niece exchange glances as they rush off to where the doctor went.

They follow the doctor up to the stairway, quickly tailing him, "Wanna tell me what this is about?" Sam asks quickly.

Becca huffs as she races up the stairs with her uncle, "He wanted a mission report.." She mumbles, "He trigged Papa for a mission report." She states, "Can i tell you the rest later?" She grumbles out, not wanting to be distracted from the task at hand. When they reach one of the main floors, Becca can hear fighting, she glances at her uncle nervously.

"Go, that's probably where your dad is. I got the doctor." He says, kissing her forehead gently before they break apart. The daughter kicks in open the door in front of her, seeing her father fighting numerous agents and winning. She looks over, seeing her brother. Her Buddy. She didn't know he was even here. And yet he was standing adjacent to her, waiting for the right moment to advance towards her father. She can't see her mother, her father must've hidden her somewhere so she wouldn't be taken from him.

She can overhear her Aunt Tasha in the comm her brother has. She stands in front of the pillar, hiding from them as she watches her brother activate his watch, turning it into a repulser. Just like the ones he made for their mom. Tony crouches, stepping into the line of fire as he sends a shockwave towards Winter, stunning him momentarily. She watches her brother walk towards her father, he sends a burst of light at Winer. The assassin winces, crouching as he tries to recover. Becca knows she needs to step in when she witnesses her father aim a gun he had directly at Tony's face, Tony covers the barrel of the gun with his gloved hand as Winter pulls the trigger of the gun. "Buddy!" She shouts, stepping into their line of sight, she catches both men off guard.

"Reba?!" Tony shouts, "Get out of here!" He yells, breaking the gun as he pulls his gloved hand away. Winter uses the distraction to get the upper hand, sending his elbow into Tony's chest, sending the man flying backwards into tables.

Becca gasps, then kicks off running towards the men, jumping onto the table beside her father as Sharon and Natasha come onto the scene. The blonde kicks Winter but he deflects it, she backs away and Natasha races forward, kneeing Winter in his chest, causing him to stumble momentarily. She knees the man in his private area, causing him to go off balance, giving Sharon time to come back. She swings her leg but Winter catches her leg with his metal hand. He flips her harshly onto a table, Becca watches her fall unconscious. The teenager sneaks up behind her father, twisting herself onto him, her legs wrapped around his neck again. She clenches her hands together, hitting against the pressure points on his neck. She grunts in frustration as Winter pins her against a table. She gasps for air as his metal hand wraps itself around her neck. She doesn't let her legs fall, only tightening them around him more as she gasps for air.

"Papa, I know you recognize me." She stutters out, she sees stars in her vision until Winter is kicked off of her. She sucks in air as her lungs open up, she cautiously sits up on the table, seeing King T'Challa now advancing on her father. He is able to keep up with him more than anyone else besides her. She clutches her neck as she remembers him keeping up the pace of her father and her on the motorcycle. No one but her, her father and uncle could do that. So that made her think, was he enhanced?
The King and Winter exchange dodges and punches until Winter lands a fist to T'Challa's chest, sending him backwards. But the King doesn't stay down. He lands on all fours, giving Winter time to walk up the stairs, most likely where he had put Mary. When Becca stands up, she looks at T'Challa, and the king looks at her, "He's my father. Please, don't kill him."

T'Challa eyes the young teenager, he lost his father due to Becca's. But he was friends with her mother, and the last thing he wanted to do was cause someone to be fatherless like he was. "I can make no promises." He states, then takes off where Winter walked off to. She knows T'Challa means well, in his own grieving process. She darts out of the building, spotting her Uncle Sam in the midst of the crowds running out of the building.

She runs over to him, her lungs still burned but her healing factor was already taking affect. Sam looks towards his niece, then spots a discarded suit jacket. The two dart over to it, picking it up and seeing that it's the doctor's jacket. "Damn it." He curses, looking around quickly.

"It's a shell game." Becca says hoarsely, looking at the jacket, then up at her uncle, "What do we do now?" She asks softly.

"We find a place to hide." Sam says, grabbing her hand as they take off running along with the hordes of people around them, blending into the crowd.

Steve looks over his niece, seeing the hand shaped bruise around her neck. It was fading at a quick pace, but it was still there. "You sure that you're okay, B?" He asks her cautiously. He hated that her father had hurt her, even if he was Winter at the time. He still didn't ever want to see his niece hurt like she was when they had found each other again.

"I'm okay. It only hurts a little now." Becca responds, giving her uncle a smile. The two were watching the sky as the helicopters flew overhead every few minutes, searching for the missing fugitives.

"Hey, Cap! Princess!" Sam calls to them from the adjacent room where Becca's parents were in. The uncle and niece walk into the room. A smile breaks onto her face as she sees her parents. Mary was beside her husband, his flesh hand intertwined with her own. She starts to walk towards them but Steve gently pulls her back to stand beside him. He didn't want to test anything with her as she was still healing. Mary being beside Bucky was risky enough, but Winter never intentionally harmed her. He tried to kidnap her because deep down, Winter knew she was important to him.

Becca looks up at her uncle in confusion, "Uncle Steve.. It's Papa." She reminds him.

Steve sighs, nodding, "I know, but he could still be Winter." He explains, "Your Ma is only beside him because he didn't intentionally harm her when he was attacking us." Steve says quietly.

Becca watches her mother from the other room start to assess her father as he shifts in his chair, groaning in pain, "Where does it hurt?" She asks softly.

"Mary, don't." Sam warns his friend. The daughter still wanting to be beside her father and mother, but Steve wasn't letting that happen just yet.

Mary snaps her head towards Sam, "Don't what, Sam?" She snaps in frustration, "I'm making sure my husband doesn't have any internal bleeding or concussions." She states harshly towards her friend. Becca watched her Uncle raise his hands in defense, mocking surrender.

Becca remembers hearing stories from her parents when they were together at Winnie's gravestone. She knew they were both protective of each other. If the world taught them anything, it was that they have to protect what was theirs if they intended on it staying theirs. "Mama's always been protective of Papa. And vise versa. That's why when he was Winter, he never hurt her. He knocked her out, but he would never intentionally hurt her."

Sam sighs, his hands crossing over his chest as he glances between the Rogers-Barnes family, "Why is that?" He asks his niece.

Becca sends her father a warm smile from the other room before looking at her uncle, "Because even as Winter, Papa still knew that Mama was important to him." She states.

The uncle and niece walk into the room, Becca smiles softly as she sees her parents share a brief kiss. Bucky looked up slowly, seeing his brother. "Steve." He breathes out.

"Which Bucky am i talking to?" Steve asks cautiously. He wanted proof that it was truly his brother.

"Your mom's name was Sarah." Bucky mumbles, Becca watches her mother tighten her hold on her husband's hand. Her father breathes out a chuckle, "You used to put newspapers in your shoes." He states, then glances at his wife, "Mary and I were married on January first, 1945." He states, squeezing her hand "I fell in love with her the day of your mother's funeral. Counting the stars."

Becca smiles, looking up at her uncle, "Can't read that in a museum." He quips.

Sam eyes his friend, "Just like that, we're suppose to be cool?" He quips back.

Bucky groans, looking at the people around him, his family, except for Sam anyways. "What did i do?"

"Enough." Steve replies.

The father sighs, clearly shaken over what had transpired, "I knew this would happen. Everything Hydra put inside of me is still there. All he had to do was say the goddamn words." He snaps, Mary moves her hand to brush some hair from his face in attempt to comfort him. Becca saw her father intake air slowly, calming himself down, she knew her mother had done her job.

"Who was he, Papa?" Becca asks curiously. The doctor clearly didn't know Bucky had a daughter. It had caught him by surprise. But they all wanted to know why.

"I don't know." The father responds.

"People are dead. The bombing, the setup, the doctor did all of that to get ten minutes with you. I need you to do better than I don't know." Steve says sternly, they needed to act fast if they were to stop the doctor. Becca hesitates as her mother snaps at Steve.

Bucky shakes his head, his blue eyes glancing at his wife, "It's alright, Mary.." He mutters, then he begins to think back, "He wanted to know about Siberia." Becca nods in confirmation, she was there when the doctor asked her father the question.

"He wanted to know where you were kept." Becca mumbles.

Bucky nods, "He wanted to know exactly where."

The mother hesitates, looking up at her husband, "Why would he need to know that?"

"Because i'm not the only Winter Solider." Bucky says. Becca's eyes widen slightly, she barely remembers seeing the team of Winter Soldiers. She may have caught a glimpse of them. She remembers what Sinclair had told her before he was captured. That she was suppose to be like them. One of them.

"Who were they?" Steve asks.

The father hesitates, blue eyes meeting blue eyes. "They were the most elite death squad." He starts, lifting his head to look at his daughter more, "Becca was being trained to become one of them. They had more kills than anyone in Hydra history, and that was before the serum."

The news that Becca was suppose to join this team shocked her family. Steve had heard whisperings of it from when he aided Becca and Spider Man in capturing the evil scientist Sinclair. He wondered what would've happened had Becca actually turned out like them. Would she be one of the ones he would eventually have to fight?

"They all turn out like you?" Sam quips, crossing his arms.

"Worse." Bucky responds.

"The doctor, could he control them?" Steve asks nervously.

"Enough." Bucky replied.

"Said he wanted to see an empire fall." Mary inputs, remembering what the doctor had told her and Steve before Winter attacked.

"With these guys he could do it. They speak thirty languages, can hide in plain sight, infiltrate, assassinate, destabilize. They could take a whole country down in one night, and you'd never see them coming." Bucky explains, then looks at his daughter again, "They wanted Becca to be the best of them." He says.

Steve holds onto his niece gently, his arm wrapped around her waist as Sam walks over to the two. Mary stood up, releasing Bucky's metal arm from it's confinement. Becca can hear her father criticizing himself. "I hurt our daughter, Mary. I hurt our baby girl." She hears her father say. She wants to hug him, to tell him that it's okay. But Becca knows her mother will do it for her.

Sam crosses his arms as he looks at Steve and Becca, "This would have been a lot easier a week ago." Sam says quietly.

"What if we called Buddy?" Becca asked, she loved her brother, and she wanted him to be apart of whatever was going on. But both Steve and Sam knew more than the teenager did about what shift has happened in their family of Avengers.

"No, he won't believe us." Sam says, "Sorry, Princess." He adds, he truly was sorry. But that couldn't change the fact that Tony wouldn't help them, not anymore.

"Even if he did-" Steve starts.

"Who knows what the Accords would let him help." Sam points out, Becca's eyes widen. She had forgotten that these Accords were law now, heroes that signed had to have permission from the governments of the world now to go help them. If the Accords didn't allow Tony to go, he couldn't.

Steve looks away in frustration, Becca wraps her arms around his waist to try and ease his frustration, he smiles very briefly at his niece, then looks back at Sam, "We're on our own."

Sam tilts his head slightly, looking at Steve and Becca, "Maybe not. I know a guy." He says.
