15. Explanations
Peter was seated on his couch in his living room as he and his friends were going about their study time. The teenage boy had been depressed since his calls with Becca. He didn't like how she sounded, he could tell she was scared. He wanted to be there for her, to fight with her. But that wasn't possible. So there Peter sat, books and notebooks sprawled around him on the couch as Ned continued building his lego Millennium Falcon with Harry. MJ and Michelle were talking about an upcoming play on Broadway that seemed interesting.
"She'll be fine, Pete." Ned said as he took in the sight of his friend. The group of friends knew how distressed Peter had been, "Sof is capable of handling her own."
Peter sighed as he closed his notebook, "I know she is.. believe me, i know." He mumbles.
"Then what's all the worry for?" MJ asked cautiously, "Do you know something we don't?"
Peter paled, but recovered quickly, shaking his head, "N- No.. Nothing like that. She's just gets attached to people easily, Doctor Bryne is like a mother to her.. so to know she was in that bomb attack.. it's nerve racking."
"And her dad's brother in law, Bucky, was the one who caused the attack." Harry points out, motioning to the muted tv playing the news coverage of the attack on the UN. Peter wanted to correct his friend, but everyone who didn't know the whole story, thought that James Buchanan Barnes was responsible. "It hits close to her home."
"Very close." MJ agrees with her boyfriend. Peter nods in agreement, then tries to drown out his thoughts in his school work. He was also doing as much of Becca's as he could, to keep her active in her studies for when she returned.
May enters the room with groceries in her hands, Peter is quick to help his Aunt, "You get them?" He asks curiously, a small smile on his lips as he looks into the bags, seeing the chocolate chip Eggos. "Thanks, Aunt May."
"Be sure to save some for Sofia when she gets home." May reminds her nephew.
"Um.. Pete!" Ned calls for his friend, the volume of the tv getting unmuted, drawing his attention away from the Eggos. "You need to see this!" Peter walks over to face the tv, and what his eyes see. He does not believe.
"Is that Sofia on a motorcycle with Bucky Barnes?" Michelle questions, the group of friends huddled around the tv. Peter could clearly see that Becca and her father were trying to outrun the people pursuing them.
"What the hell." Harry mumbled under his breath as he pulls MJ into his arms, the redhead moving to sit on his lap. "This is nuts."
"This isn't right." Ned mutters in disbelief.
The friends watch in horror as the cameras showcase Becca clinging to Mary. Peter can only stand and watch as he witnesses his heart being taken away from her family. Her screams are deafening in his ears. He stands still as he watches her mother and uncle try to stop the men from restraining her, only to be held back. His heart shatters when he watches his Fia be muzzled. The tears streaming down her face as she continues to wail in torment as she's forced to the ground. Peter can feel all eyes on him when May shuts the tv off, not wanting to see anymore of the horror being shown on the screen of a girl precious to her.
Peter knows his friends are talking to him, asking him what they can do to help him. But all he hears is ringing. His heart hammering in his chest. He watched the love of his life be treated as if she was nothing more than a common criminal on the run. She was anything but.
"- Did Sof call Doctor Bryne, mama?" MJ asks, pulling Peter from his thoughts.
"I think she did, and she called for Bucky, calling him papa." Ned says, looking at Peter in confusion, "Pete, what's going on?"
Peter pales, looking from between his friends and aunt, "i-"
"Did you know?" Michelle asks, Peter could feel that Michelle felt as if she had been betrayed. Been lied too.
"Yes." Peter whispers, his eyes staring down at the rug on his floor, "Fia is Bucky Barnes's daughter.. Doctor Bryne is her mother."
The room is silent as his friends take in the information they had just been told, "That can't be true. Doctor Bryne doesn't have any kids." Harry states, he wanted to know the truth just like the rest of his friends, but he knew that this wasn't Peter's secret to tell, Becca had kept this secret for a reason.
"Doctor Bryne is just a cover name so Fia's mom can stay in the public eye without questions." Peter explains, "Fia's mom is Mary Rogers."
The room is stunned into silence again, Ned is in shock, MJ and Harry are also in shock, but Michelle is pissed. "So she lied to us? Is her name even Sofia, Peter? How could you keep this from us!" Michelle snaps.
Peter swallows harshly, looking up at his friends, "It wasn't my secret to tell, Elle. Fia kept the secret because her dad is a wanted criminal. Her mom and family just wanted her to live a normal life as much as possible."
"But what is her real name." Harry asks tentatively
"Wait- i remember reading this in history class!" Ned pipes in, looking at his friends, "Mary Rogers-Barnes had a daughter named Rebecca Sofia Barnes on November twenty-second, 1945." He says, remembering that fact as if he just learned it. "Rebecca Barnes is our Sof."
Peter nods in confirmation, and May wraps her arms around her nephew in an attempt to comfort him. She didn't care what Becca's real name or family was. She just knew her nephew loved this girl with his entire being. And watching her be treated worse than trash was painful. More than painful. He was living in his own version of hell. The hell of not being there when Becca needed him most.
"When did you know this, Pete?" MJ asks cautiously.
"Few days after the field trip to OsCorp." He mumbles a reply. Since the secrets were being told, he wanted to tell them that Uncle Ben didn't die in an attempted robbery of his lab. That his Fia had been controlled. But he knew that this wasn't the right moment for that conversation.
"So you've been keeping this secret for six months?" Michelle asks in disbelief. She was pissed, and no one was going to get in her way of knowing the truth.
"Yes.. it was her mom's wishes to keep it a secret. She wanted Fia to keep living a normal life with me, with us." Peter answers.
"Okay, but what is true about her backstory she told us? Russia, the captivity-"
"All true." Peter cuts Ned off, "She was kept locked away in Russia for seventy years. Taken by Hydra when she was five. She was trained to be an assassin for them, but they never broke her. She found her family back in 2014.. she was a main part of Hydra and Shield falling." He says, "She was in those helicarriers when they fell out of the sky."
MJ gasps in shock as she listens to Peter explain what he could, she still loved her friend. That would never change, she wanted to hug Becca. Harry and Ned felt the same. But not Michelle. "How is she still alive, and not look her real age." Harry asks.
"Mary was injected with a serum to stunt her aging while she was pregnant with Fia.. it must've hindered her growth. Until the scientists injected her with their version of the super solider serum before sending her out on the mission that killed Director Fury. It was then that she aged a bit, and for the most part, is still aging like we all would." Peter explains what he remembers being told.
"So you're dating an older woman? Hot." Ned quips, MJ promptly smacking the backside of his head, scolding her friend.
"What're we suppose to call her then.. i assume everyone will likely know when we go back to school.. you'll be asked a ton of questions, Peter.. are you prepared for that?" Harry asks his best friend, wanting to make sure he was okay.
Peter hesitated, leaning into his Aunt May, "I'm not prepared for any of it. But am i ready to defend Fia? Without question." He answers, "I love her with my entire being. Seeing her like that kills me inside, i want nothing more than to help her. But i can't."
"You'll help her by being here, and explaining what you can to the faculty and your other students." May says, "We'll both defend Fia."
"So will we, Pete. She's our friend too." MJ says, Harry and Ned both nodding their heads in agreement. But when they look around for Michelle, she's no where to be found. She had slipped out while they were all talking, wanting nothing to do with them anymore for the time being.
Becca sat strapped down in a containment unit similar to the one her father was in. She hated this. Hated every part of it. She wasn't muzzled anymore, but that didn't stop her mind from reliving the trauma she endured in Russia. Bucky could see the panic on her face, her heart rate spiking. And he couldn't do a damn thing about it. He was her father, but he had not done anything a father does for his daughter. He never got to teach her how to dance, he never got to threaten boys that wanted to court her. He wanted to live through all of that, but he never got too. And neither did Mary.
Becca makes eye contact with her father, his fingers reaching towards him but her wrists were strapped down just like his were. He knew what she was indicating, them holding hands for reassurance. So he did the same, reaching his fingers towards her containment unit. And a small smile graced her lips even if it was just for a moment. The daughter could hear her uncle and mother talking to the people that had orchestrated this entire thing. But when Mary started to leave Becca's line of sight, that's when the panic set in once more. Her mother was her sense of comfort. She always had been. She looks over at her father, seeing him lean his head back in defeat as the elevator doors closed on them. The father and daughter were being transported where they would be evaluated and questioned, by some stranger neither of them knew.
When the two containment units were set completely on the ground, Becca's eyes were scanning all that she could, trying to see where she was. "Papa.." She whispers.
"I know, звездная пыль." Stardust, Bucky whispered back. He didn't want them talking too much, but he knew his daughter needed to know they would be safe. She needed to hear that confirmation from her father. It was the only way to calm her down without physical contact. The German forces banged on both containment cells, telling them to be quiet. Bucky narrowed his eyes at them but didn't say anything more. Becca had gotten her confirmation.
Minutes later, a doctor walks into the room Bucky and Becca are, he sits down behind the table. Becca can feel her heart rate spiking again with nervousness. She was fine talking to someone about all of this, but not when she was in a cell.
"Hello Mr Barnes." The doctor says, greeting the man, then his eyes turn to Becca, "Hello young miss, we haven't had the pleasure. You're not in my files." He says and Becca looks down, she knew there was no point in hiding who she was anymore. People didn't know she existed now a-days, she was a person briefly mentioned in passing in their history books.
The teenager looks over at her father, he nods slowly, confirming that telling the truth is their best course of action. She then looks back at the doctor, "I'm- I'm Becca Barnes." She says, introducing herself. She can hear gasps erupt from the rooms above her with her enhanced hearing.
The doctor tilts his head, "I wasn't aware that Mr Barnes had a daughter." He states calmly, his eyes drifting to the father.
"Nobody knew expect for my family. Until now.." Becca says softly. Even though she was being confined, she was still herself. No one could take that away from her. She was a still Becca Barnes, beloved daughter of Bucky and Mary Barnes. People had tried and failed in her life to try and take that identity away from her. But it never worked.
She feels her father's eyes on her as the doctor speaks, "Your father is James Buchanan Barnes. But who is your mother?" He asks.
Becca hesitated, glancing up at the windows, she could see her mother and uncles. She knew that whatever she said, her mother would be free from her lie. "Mary Rogers- Barnes. Papa's wife." She says softly, "Did you not attend history class?" She asks, drawing a chuckle from people in the room above them. Mary's marriage to Bucky was something everyone knew about, it was covered multiple times in history classes in America and across the waters.
"And where is your mother?" The doctor asks, but the answer he is given was not something he expected. That nobody expected.
"She's with Uncle Steve and Uncle Sam." Becca says with a smile. Gasps erupt once more from the rooms above. She could see all eyes turn to look at where Mary was.
The doctor clears his throat, then looks at the girl once more, "When were you born?"
"November twenty-second, 1945." Becca says.
"Enough." Bucky snaps gruffly, he didn't want his daughter being questioned like this. Their secrets were no longer their own, and he couldn't see his wife's reaction.
The doctor nods, "I'll find out more later. Back to why we are all here." He says, opening his file, writing down what he now knows about Becca, "I've been sent by the United Nations to evaluate you, and now your daughter as well." He explains, looking up at James and Becca, "Your first name is James? And you're Becca, is that short for Rebecca?" He asks, Becca only nods in conformation, her blue eyes looking over at her father. "I am not here to judge either of you. I just want to ask a few questions." He says, pulling his list of questions out from his folder, "Do you know where you are, Rebecca? James?" He asks them, but neither responds. Becca was done freely giving information now that the secrets were out. "I can't help you if you don't talk to me, James, Rebecca."
Bucky finally looks up at the doctor, "My name is Bucky." He says, "Only my wife gets to call me James." He adds, a soft smile ghostly appears and disappears on his lips. "And her name is Becca." He corrects the doctor.
Becca nods slowly, "Only bad people call me Rebecca now." She says softly.
The doctor nods, writing things down on his notepad, "Alright." He says, "Tell me, Bucky. You've seen a great deal, haven't you?" He asks.
Bucky looks down, "I don't wanna talk about it." He mumbles gruffly. He didn't want his wife and daughter knowing the sins he's committed in his life. He didn't want to relive them.
"You feel that if you open your mouth, the horrors might never stop." The doctor says, tapping something on his laptop, shaking his head, "Don't worry." He says, looking back up at the father, "We only have to talk about one."
Becca hesitates, "One?" She asks curiously as the rooms go dark, as if the power was cut.
Bucky looks at his daughter briefly, making sure she's okay, then turns back to where the doctor is seated, "What the hell is this?" He asks, confused as to what was happening.
"Let's talk about your home." The doctor begins speaking again as if he knew the power would go out, "Not Romania. Certainly not Brooklyn, no." He says, opening up his satchel, pulling out a red leather book with a star in the middle. She had only seen this book twice in her life. And both times were when the scientists needed to control the Winter Solider, "I mean your real home." He says, taking his glasses off.
Becca's eyes widen, "No! Don't do this! You don't know what you're doing!" She screams at the doctor as he opens the book, holding a flashlight to it as he begins to read her father's trigger words. The words that unleash the Winter Solider.
"желание." Longing.
Bucky shakes his head, tightly closing his eyes. He could already feel the words triggering Winter, "No." He whispers.
"ржавые." Rusted.
"Stop." Bucky pleads, not daring himself to look at his daughter, knowing the horror of Winter. She had seen him in action many times. But she had never seen him be triggered like this.
"Семнадцать." Seventeen.
Becca knew that these words meant something to her father, she knew that at age Seventeen, he knew he was in love with Mary. The others she didn't know, but the number was specially special for her parents. She could hear the metal of her father's arm whirring as he gripped the arm of the chair. "Stop." He says more firmly this time, not being able to hold Winter back much longer.
"Pассвет." Daybreak.
Bucky screams in agony as he fights the control of the words. Becca can only sit in fear and horror as her precious Papa fights for his life. His metal hand clenched tightly in a fist, breaking the cuff around his metal wrist. He breaks the one over his flesh arm and begins to punch the door of his containment unit.
"печь." Furnace.
Bucky screams once more as he punches the door even harder, cracks begin to form. Becca is trying to break free from her own restraints, "Papa, no!" She screams.
"Девять." Nine.
Bucky only punching the door more, ignoring the screams of his daughter. The doctor circles the containment unit, still active in controlling The Winter Solider.
"доброкачественный." Benign.
Tears stream down Becca's face as she watches her father lose more and more of himself to Winter. "Papa, you have to fight it!" She screams, but it's no use.
"Возвращение домой." Homecoming.
Becca tries to fight the restraints more, but they're not budging. She screams at her Papa once more. She screams at the doctor to stop, but he pays her no mind.
"Один." One.
One daughter.
"Грузовой автомобиль." Freight Car.
Bucky smashes the door away just as the last trigger word is said. He lands on his knees, panting for his breathing to get under control as the doctor walks in front of the Winter Solider. The soldier standing upright, taller than Becca had remembered.
"Cолдат?" Solider? The doctor asks.
Becca breathes heavily as she shakes her head, "Papa.. you can't." She whimpers.
"Готовы соблюдать." Ready to comply. The Winter Soldier responds, Becca's papa is no longer here. There is only The Winter Soldier. Hydra's elite assassin.
"Mission report. December sixteenth, 1991." The doctor asks Winter, all Becca can do is watch in horror. Her mind thinking back to where she had heard that date before, it was familiar. Her eyes widen as it clicks in her mind where she knew that date. It was the date her father killed her brother's parents. The day Howard and Maria Stark died.
