14. Criminals
Sam and Becca sat on the roof of the apartment that Bucky was currently hiding out at. The four of them wanted to get Bucky out without a fight, but the teenager had a feeling that that wasn't going to happen. People were after her Papa and no one was going to stop them from obtaining their target. The Uncle looked over at his niece, smiling softly. He wanted to shoo her away, to keep her from being apart of whatever was going to go down. But he knew she wouldn't leave without her father. They were in a waiting game at the moment, and the silence was deafening almost. Until Sam thought of something to talk about.
"So who's your boyfriend?" Sam asks, smirking a bit as Becca jumps at the sudden question. The teenager looked over at her uncle, burying her face in her gloved hands. She was embarrassed but also nervous. This was the first time in a while that she was spending time with her family outside of her blood family.
"He- um.." Becca stammers and it only makes Sam smirk more, "His name is Peter.. Parker.."
"The family you've been staying with?"
Becca nods, "I don't know how much Mama's told you-"
"That you're dating someone who treats you right, but nothing more." Sam clarifies for his niece, "So is he? Treating you right?"
"Yes. He is, he's so sweet and kind.. he understands a lot of what i struggle with, and he tries his best to understand the things he doesn't." Becca explains, "He's my best friend, and i love him." She says, a smile appearing on her face. "He still loves me after everything that i've done.."
"Those things you did under Hydra weren't you. You were forced." Sam says, grabbing her hand as he keeps his eyes tentative of the surroundings, "Do you understand that? You and your father weren't in control."
Becca smiles warmly at her uncle, nodding in understanding, "I understand. But something happened when i was with him during and after Ultron.." She says, her breathing becoming unsteady as she remembers Sinclair forcing her to kill Uncle Ben, one of the only father figures in her life. A life that she had taken. "I killed Peter's Uncle Ben." She says, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sam's eyes widen in shock, "You did what?"
"I killed Uncle Ben. I didn't want too, i was forced but it was still my hand that pulled the trigger of the gun." Becca whimpers, but tries her best to stay focused on the mission at hand, keeping watch for her Uncle Steve and Mama.
"Forced. You were forced, by who?"
"Sinclair."
"The man your Uncle helped put away?"
"Yes."
Sam nods, the information still sinking in, but he understood the weight of what Becca had told him. He wants to say more, to comfort her, but his scanner picked up commotion heading towards where Mary and Steve were. He presses his fingers to his comm, "Heads up you two. German Special Forces approaching from the south." He relays to his teammates.
Becca crouches as she looks over as her uncle's scanner, then looks over, "I can hear them." She whispers to her uncle.
"Understood." Steve says back through his comm.
Becca's hearing picks up multiple men and their heavy footsteps, she looks at her Uncle Sam. He grasps her hand tightly as she relays the new information, "They've set the perimeter." She tells her uncle and mother. She was nervous for her family. She didn't want a fight, but right now. It always ended in a fight.
Sam and Becca snap their heads over as they hear banging, Sam quickly scans the building again, seeing them race inside, "They're entering the building." He states as quickly as he can. He can hear Steve and Mary trying to talk with Bucky but Becca scrambles onto her feet as she hears people running up towards where they are. "They're on the roof, Becca and I are compromised." He states as his wings extend and he grabs hold of Becca. The two jump off the roof. Watching in wait as the see the hostile men prepare to enter Bucky's apartment.
"Five seconds." She tells her family, trying to get them to hurry up and get out of the room. She looks up at Sam as she holds onto him, "Three seconds."
Becca can hear Sam's heart rate spike as they see the men throw something into the windows, "Breach! Breach! Breach!" Sam shouts into the coms. The daughter can hear the fighting and the shouting with her enhanced hearing, looking up at her uncle. She wants to help. A little while later, Sam sets her down on a safe part of the roof. Becca gasps when she sees her father jump from a balcony onto the adjacent building and starts off running. She wants to help him, then looks down as she sees her mother fly up to meet her on the roof.
"Mama." Becca mutters in fear.
Mary nods in understanding, breathing heavily from fighting the guards and agents in the building, "Go help him." She tells Becca. The daughter nods eagerly, grabbing hold of her mother's arms as she flies them over to the other building. The mother swings her daughter onto the roof. Becca rolls onto her feet. She runs to meet up with her father but is stopped when a man in a black cat suit jumps from mid air, landing on Bucky.
"No!" Becca shouts, drawing the attention briefly of the man in the suit, "Leave him alone!" She shouts again, racing towards them as fast as she can.
"Becca, stay out of this!" Bucky shouts back as he and the man begin to fight, Bucky throws punches but the man is quick to deflect them. The father dodges the man's claws as best he can, ducking and weaving between the man until the cat man gets the upper hand, he kicks Bucky in the face, sending him backwards and then kicks him again in the chest. Becca darts to her father as the cat man unleashes his claws once more. She grabs hold of him from behind, wrapping her arms around his neck as tightly as she can to try and pry him away from her father. Bucky uses the opening Becca gave him to slip out just in time. The cat man grabs Becca from behind him and throws her across the roof. She lands harshly against crates, wincing at the twinge of pain in her sides and ribs but shakes it off.
She stands up, watching her father dodge more attacks from the cat man until he uses the leverage of a crate to pounce into Bucky. Becca looks around her and sees a metal rod, "Here!" She exclaims to her father, throwing him the rod. He catches it in time to deflect the claws again, holding them up away from him. Becca can hear her family talking on the comms but she has to ignore them as she focuses on advancing to the cat man. She slides in between his legs, kicking him forcefully in his chest, sending him backwards. The man lands on all fours then sprints towards Bucky once more, pinning him against the ground. Becca wraps her arms around the shoulders of the cat man, as her father grabs hold of the man's wrists, trying to keep the claws away from his face. Becca gasps when she hears bullets coming towards her, she releases her hold on the man and darts for cover behind a crate, not wanting to get hit by a bullet. She watches at the man pulls away from her father and that gives Bucky the upper hand as Sam takes care of the helicopter. Bucky kicks away from the cat man. He grabs his backpack and his daughter's hand as he runs towards the edge of the roof.
Bucky jumps off the roof, landing on the ledge below, he looks up to see Becca copying his movements. Behind her is the cat man. He uses his claws to slide down the side of the building. Bucky grabs onto his daughter, launching themselves off the ledge as fast as he can. The father and daughter take off running. Becca can hear her uncle's shield collide with the ground in the distance. But she can also hear the helicopter again. She gasps when the chopper comes into view, raining bullets on Becca and her father. Bucky finds an opening to a tunnel, throwing his daughter onto his back to make sure she stays with him, "Hold on." He tells her, Becca nodding as he leaps down into oncoming traffic. Cars honk at them as Bucky weaves through the traffic, and then begins to take off running along side the cars. Becca can hear sirens tailing them from a distance as her father manages to run even faster than the cars on the road. Bucky jumps onto cars, walking over them and landing in front of them and continues running, trying to put as much distance as he can between him and his daughter, and the cat man chasing them with a vengeance.
Bucky stumbles his footing briefly as cars appear heading towards him and Becca. He holds tight to his daughter's legs as she tightens her hold around his neck. The father dives for the opposite side of traffic, avoiding the cop cars heading straight towards him. They reach an exit of the tunnel and Becca spots the motorcycle heading towards them. "Papa."
"I see it." He whispers back, grabbing the handle of the motorcycle, spinning it around in the air as he lands on the seat with Becca holding tightly behind him as he speeds off, diving in between lanes of traffic until he's in the direction he needs to be in. Becca looks behind her shoulder to see her uncle Steve driving one of the cop cars and her mother in the passenger window. Her crystal blue eyes widen as the cat man launches himself from the car Steve is driving. Mary lands a blast on him, jolting him off his course just enough for Bucky to grab hold of the cat man's neck, protecting his daughter from the man he holds that he knows will bring harm to her if he had the chance.
"Papa!" Becca screams in terror, looking up at the man Bucky holds the man in the air. The man uses the wall to propel him onto the other side while Bucky still has his hold on his neck. The bike leans dangerously close to the ground and sparks fly from Bucky's metal hand as he tries to get the bike balanced again. Becca uses her foot to kick the cat man off of the bike, giving her father the time to balance the bike again. The father hands his daughter an explosive and she nods, knowing what she has to do. She throws it up at the overpass, it explodes as the father and daughter exit that stretch of the tunnel. The next thing Becca knows, the cat man has slashes the back tire. She screams as Bucky grabs onto her tightly as they tumble onto the ground harshly. She tightly holds onto her father as she hears a car tumble. Becca looks up just as the cat man is positioned over herself and her father only for her Uncle Steve to barrel himself into the man. Sirens wail as the father and daughter stand up cautiously. There was no more places to run too. Becca watches as her Mother and Uncle Steve stand in front of them. "Mama.. I'm scared." She whimpers as she clings onto her mother's arm.
Becca was terrified, she didn't know what was going to happen now. She glanced at her father, seeing the worry in his eyes for her. He never wanted this for her. The danger his life posed. But there was no stopping his stubborn daughter. Stubbornness was in her blood from both sides of her family. Barnes and Rogers. She was going to stand by her family no matter the consequences. But Becca was scared as to what this meant for Peter. Did he see this on the news? Everyone probably did. Her friends must've been scared out of their mind for her. She never wanted them to know this side of her life. But if she got out of this alive, the world would know Sofia Rogers did not exist, only Becca Barnes. Steve extended his arm in front of his niece and brother, protecting them.
Becca gasped when she saw her Uncle Rhodey land on the ground in his War Machine armor. His repulsers raised, aimed at her family and the cat man. She wanted to know why her uncle was acting like this, didn't he know her and her family? Becca then remembered that her mother said that he was one that was in favor of the Accords. And it only made Becca hurt. "Stand down, now." Rhodey demanded. Becca looked around, seeing the cop cars surround them, the police aiming their rifles and other guns at them, ready to fire when commanded to. The teenager watches her uncle raise his hands in surrender, locking his shield onto his back with a click. "Congratulations, Cap. You're a criminal." Rhodey snaps and stuns Becca, she had never heard her Uncle speak to any of her family like this before. She knew the Accords had begun to tear her family apart then and there. He turned to Mary and Becca, "I hope you're pleased, Mary. You and Becca are also criminals."
Becca whips her head around as special forces descend towards her and her family. She watches as the cops force her father onto the ground. And then her worst nightmare becomes reality. Becca is pried from her mother's grasp, she screams for her mother and uncle, for her father as she's handcuffed and forced onto the ground as well. She didn't want this. She was just trying to help her Papa. Tears cascade from Becca's crystal blue eyes, "M- Mama! Help!" She screams again. She tries to fight against the guards and the restraints they have on her, getting her knees back onto the ground, "Uncle Rhodey! Please! Don't let them do this to me!" She screams, yelling for her uncle in a fools errand. Steve steps towards his niece, trying to get to her, to help his beloved niece. Seeing her like this, the men treating her like she was a monster, shattered his heart. They had no business doing this to her. She was a teenager. But in the eyes of the law now, she was a fugitive.
Mary scrambles for her daughter, but soldiers hold her tightly, not letting her any where near her daughter, "Becca! My baby!" She screams back, then looks at the agents forcing Becca onto the ground, "Don't you dare touch her!" She screams, her motherly instincts screaming at her to save her baby girl. Her precious gift from Bucky. Becca only thrashes more in the arms of her captors as she hears her mother call to her, screaming and wailing for them to let her go. The mother snaps her head in fury at her son's best friend, "You really going to let them do this to her?!" Mary screams at War Machine, "James Rhodes!" Mary screams again.
Rhodey only watches as Becca wails more, "NO! Please don't let them take me!" She screams, her throat burning from the lack of oxygen she was intaking due to her hysterics, "Mama! Papa!" She screams once more. Tears fall heavily from her eyes, the teenager didn't think it could be any worse until the German forces have had enough of her constant screaming and place a muzzle around her mouth. The tightness of the muzzle pinches her cheeks in a harsh way. Memories of the Red Room flood her mind, this wasn't the first time she had been muzzled. The Madam often used it as a way to shut Becca up for being disobedient. She watches, out of the blurriness of her version, her mother collapse onto her knees in agony, watching her daughter be treated this way. Mary is handcuffed as the cat man raises his hands in surrender, his claws retracting as Steve's hands are pinned behind his back. The cat man slowly removes his helmet, revealing Prince, now King, T'Challa of Wakanda.
Rhodey looks away from his niece, feeling ashamed for letting them treat her like they did, but he had no choice anymore. He looks at the new King of Wakanda. "Your highness." He states cordially. Bucky's face is forced into the ground, the men holding Becca following in suit, she continues to see the torture of the Red Room flash in her mind, causing her to wail into her muzzle. She in this moment, wanted nothing more than Peter to swing in on his webs and save her. To hold her in his loving embrace and tell her that it was all a bad dream. That none of this was real. But the pain Rebecca Sofia Barnes felt in her mind and body was all too real. There was no escape from this hell.
