10. Beginnings
Becca and Peter both woke up in their respected beds to vibrating from both of their phones. Peter groaned loudly as he slapped his face in protest as he stretched. It was the weekend before midterms at Midtown and the young couple had been staying up late cramming the past few nights. So waking up early by the group chat was not something they were looking forward too.
How did they both know it was the group chat?
The constant buzzing.
Becca hummed as she rolled over in her bed to her stomach, grabbing her phone and tossing Peter's up to him on the top bunk. He caught it naturally thanks to his enhanced reflexes and began answering the group chat.
Thing 1(Peter)
The four of you couldn't sleep in like normal people?
Thing 2(Ned)
Sleeping?
What's that.
I only know of dying.
Doom and gloom(Michelle)
Leave it to Ned to think studying is dying.
Ginger lives matter(MJ)
Top it all off i'm interning at Broadway so
that's even more work for me.
Miss America(Sofia):
But sleeping is so nice.
Why would you ruin it for me?
Richie Rich(Harry)
Sorry, Sof.
We were just last minute detailing for
our get together later today.
Thing 2
Studying is dying, Michelle!
Doom and gloom
For you.
Other people don't cram for
everything last minute.
Ginger lives matter
That is pretty stupid, Neddie.
Miss America:
We did invite you to study with us, Ned
Richie Rich
Mhmm, and we had pizza.
You like pizza.
Thing 1
Shoulda come, bro
Thing 2
I didn't wanna lug all my books...
Doom and gloom
Heard about rolling backpacks?
They make those.
Get one.
Becca giggles from her bed as she read Michelle's text. Peter laughing from his top bunk as she heard him type a response.
Thing 1
So what's happening today?
Harry mentioned a get together?
Ginger lives matter
We're meeting up later at my house to watch
movies and hang before we all have to cram again, remember?
Miss America
Oooh right, should Benji and i bring anything?
Richie Rich
I'm buying candy to bring over.
MJ's got the pizza
Elle's suppose to bring soda.
Doom and gloom
Soda is a way to slow the thinking and movement of
the American people so they don't think about
how corrupt the government actually is.
Thing 2
Sooo.... she's bringing the soda.
I have any other movie food requirements.
Thing 1
What about pie?
Fia and i can bring pie.
Ginger lives matter
Perfect! We'll see you two at 3!
Becca closes her phone, setting it down as she looking up at the top bunk. "What kind of pie?" She asks her boyfriend, smiling softly as she yawns.
"I was thinking chocolate mousse and maybe an apple. Y'know, Miss America bringing apple pie. Can't get more American than that." Peter replies, his voice deep and scruffy from having only woken up recently.
"I think it could, if we got my Uncle to walk in carrying apple pie wearing his original costume. The one my Mama sowed for him during his tour of selling war bonds." Becca replies, giggling as she raised her arm, feeling the metal railing of the top bunk. Her smile grew wider as Peter reached down and grasped her hand, playing her her fingers with his own.
"You got me there." He chuckled, his senses slowly adjusting to having woken up earlier than he wanted.
"Might as well get ready for the day then, hm, Benji?"
"Give me a few minutes, Fia." Peter mumbles, rubbing his eyes with his free hand, "Senses are still adjusting.
"You go back to sleep then." She tells him, "I have some things to do."
Peter leans over the railing slowly, "You sure, Fia?" He wanted to go back to sleep, but only if Becca would be okay. He knew she would be, but his protective instincts were over powering at times. Especially when his senses were adjusting to a new day.
Becca grabs Peter's midtown hoodie, nodding as she stands up. "Yeah. I'm just gonna visit Brooklyn." She says as she pulls her hair into a long ponytail and not her normal braid.
"What's in Brooklyn?"
"Family history." Becca says, smiling softly as she stands on her bed, kissing his cheek gently, "I'll meet you at MJ's okay?"
Peter smiles, nodding slowly, "I'll get the pie."
Becca walks up to the cemetery, smiling when she sees her mother and father in front of the gravestones. As she walked up to the gravesite she could hear her parents talking. She had never seen them together. Ever. It was a new site for her blue eyes, a site she would cherish.
"Mama, Papa." The daughter called to them, grinning wide as she pulled her hoodie down.
"Baby?" Mary replied as she turned around, a wide smile appearing on her face. "Sweetheart!" She exclaimed quietly as she rushed over to her daughter, tightly wrapping her arms around her. "I missed you."
Becca smiles, leaning into her mother's embrace, "I missed you too, Mama." She whispered. She was startled when she felt a hand on her shoulder, the girl looked up, seeing her father's matching blue eyes. "You two, Papa." She said quietly.
Bucky smiles at his two favorite girls in the world. His eyes looking his daughter over, seeing the spider hair pin in her hair. His flesh hand caressing her head while his gloved metal hand is around his wife's waist.
"We have a lot to catch up on, James." Mary says, as they walk back to the gravestone where the mother had set up a picnic, "All of us do."
Becca sits down, looking at the pictures Mary had brought. She picks one up carefully, looking it over. Mary is in the picture, she never aged, and she sees a baby in her mother's arms. "Is this me?" She asks as her mother and father sit down opposite sides of her.
Mary nods, taking the picture from her daughter, showing her husband, "That's the day i came home from the hospital with my little gift of love." She says, pinching her daughter's cheek.
Bucky chuckles as Becca swats her mother's hand away, "Mama, stop it." She whines, rubbing her cheek. She then pulls her own pictures from her sweatshirt's pocket. She hands a few to her parents, "These are my friends, Papa. Mama's met some of them."
"Only Peter and Ned, baby." Mary states, leaning into her husband. His arms wrapping around his wife as she shifts into his lap. Bucky looked over the photo with a small smile on his lips. "Tell your Pa about Peter."
Becca's eyes widened in fear as her face began to heat up, "M- Mama!" She exclaimed, her eyes glancing over at her father who was waiting for an explanation as to why her heart rate spiked. "Benji, is um.. Kind of.. My boyfriend..?"
"He's what?" Bucky asked, his voice monotoned.
"My boyfriend, you know.. like how you and Mama were before you asked her to marry you?"
"I know what a boyfriend is. I just don't understand why this Peter kid has a death wish."
"P-Papa!"
"James!"
Bucky shrugs, raising his hands in defense, "I'll meet him one day. And that day i'll have cleaned all my guns that i will own eventually. If not, i have my knives on stand by."
Mary pinches the bridge of her nose, groaning. She looks back up at the picture Becca was holding, "Who are your other friends, sweetheart?" She asks, trying to change the subject quickly.
Becca hesitates, still weary from the previous, then points to each of her friend's faces, "This is Mary-Jane, but we call her MJ, she's gonna be on Broadway one day, we all know it." She says, then points to another, "This one is Michelle, she's the conspiracy theorist in our small group, she thinks the government is a sham and that the world is run by lizard people. But she's nice. She sketches us like Uncle Steve did." She explains, then points to her last friend that her Mama doesn't know. "This is Harry, he's Norman Osborn's son, the founder and CEO of OsCorp.." She tells them, her voice trailing off when she mentions the company. Mary notices the spark wither slightly in her daughter. She pulls Becca close to her body, holding her.
"I know it hurts, baby." She mumble to her daughter, glancing up at her husband's confused expression. He wasn't told of what happened only a month ago with his daughter. "Does the name Adam Sinclair ring a bell, honey?" Mary asks her husband.
His eyes widen in fear and shock, nodding slowly, "I know him all too well. What did he do." He snaps, his metal arm whirring in fury as he clenches his gloved fist.
Mary sighs, "He was able to use his words to mind control Becca."
"He what-?!"
Mary holds her hand up, silencing her husband, before he causes a scene in the cemetery. As you can see, she's here and safe. But a month ago, Ben died. Sinclair used Becca to do it. He controlled her."
Bucky's eyes narrow as he listens to his wife, his eyes never leaving his daughter as he takes in what she's saying. "And then what?"
Becca looks up at her father, "Benji and I made a plan with Uncle Steve to capture him." She said with a smile, "We did it too."
The father's eyes soften, pulling his daughter close, hesitantly kissing her forehead. He's not used to showing affection like he had in the past that's still blank in most parts for him. "You'll have to tell me more about it some other time." He tells her. Becca nodding in agreement.
Mary grins, tears in her eyes as she watches her husband and their daughter interact. Bucky looks over at his wife, "Mary? What is it? What's wrong?"
The wife shakes her head, "Nothing. Absolutely nothing, James. I just realized that this is the first time that we've been together. All three of us." She says. Bucky smiles softly, nodding.
Becca shakes her head, "Nah uh." She says, causing her parents to look at her in confusion, "All four of us." Becca points out, her hand resting on the gravestone in front of them.
Sarah Winnifred Barnes
Beloved daughter, sister, and niece
Heaven is brighter with you in it.
The door to MJ's home opens and Becca walks through it. Peter turns around from his spot on the couch, smiling wide when he sees his girlfriend. He stands up to greet her. "Hey, how was Brooklyn?"
Becca smiles, "Good. Really good." She says as Ned shouts something to Michelle.
"How can you say that! Captain America could totally beat Iron Man, Elle." Ned shouts, his hands raised in fury as he tries to prove his point.
Michelle scoffs, "But Iron Man has technology on his side. Which will ultimately be our doom as a society but Captain America lacks that. He relies on brute strength more than anything." She quips, then glances at the door. Cringing as she sees Becca.
"I can make them stop." MJ informs her friend.
Ned gasps, "No we cannot!" He exclaims, then winces as a pillow is thrown at him by Harry.
Becca giggles, shaking her head, "No, no. It's okay. I agree. My dad does rely on brute strength and Tony has his armor and tech. But my dad also has the shield, which is made out of Vibrainium. I've used it several times. You need strength and agility to use it properly."
Ned gapes at his friend, "You've.. used the shield?! And you never told me?!" He exclaims, standing up, "You betrayed me."
Peter rolls his eyes, "Ned, she didn't betray you." He states, then looks at his girlfriend, "She betrayed me! My own girlfriend, never told me she used the shield of the Captain America. I can't believe you." He states jokingly, making Becca laugh even harder.
Becca holds her hands up in defense, "Sorry. Would it be bad if i said that I fought Ultron?"
"Yes!" The entire group shouts in unison.
Becca sits on the balcony of hers and Peter's bedroom as she had many nights. Peter was out on patrol as he liked to call it. Since Sinclair was taken down and stopped Hydra for good hopefully, Becca had taken a step back from her Crystal days. She still went out every now and again. But she wanted to focus on school more at the moment. Now that things had finally seemed to calm down. Everything felt like it was finally beginning. That her life was finally taking off.
She was doing his history homework at the moment, making notes in the margins of her book. "That's wrong." She mumbles under her breath, reading about how her mother passed away in 2009. "Mama's still alive." She giggles as she marks it down.
"You know that's the school's book, they hand them down every school year." Peter quips as he hangs upside down in front of his girlfriend, "So the next person who has that book's gonna see all of your factual corrections."
Becca smirks, shrugging, "They'll think i'm lying anyways." She points out, looking up at her boyfriend. "How was patrol?"
"Dull. But that means it was good." He replies, continuing to hang upside down from his web he was holding onto. "How was homework?"
The girl sighs, "Usual, fact checking history. Acing Spanish, English and math." She nonchalantly states, "I knew all of this back in the seventies." She states, "I've known Spanish since i was ten."
"Were you forced to know it?" Peter asks hesitantly.
Becca nods, "Yeah, but that was one thing I liked. Was learning new languages."
Peter smiles softly as he watches his girlfriend talk about the things she actually enjoyed learning in the Red Room. "Midterm for Chem is tomorrow." He reminds her.
"Don't remind me. Chemistry is my worst subject." Becca grumbles, smiling softly, "So much has changed since i arrived here."
"That was what.. ten months ago?"
"Yup, just about. Eight months since you got your abilities." She adds.
"Whoa. Feels just like yesterday you were carrying me to Avengers Tower and calling your mom for help." Peter says quietly, smiling under his mask. He pulls his mask up just past his nose.
Becca nods slowly as she stands. Setting her books down. Smiling wide at Peter as she places her hands on each side of his face. Her blue eyes scanning his lips hesitantly. Peter doing the same. The two could feel the shift in the tension between them. Becca leaned in closer, Peter was still dangling upside down so he couldn't move.
"You sure?" Peter asked quietly, the breath from his lips hitting Becca's, shocking her but also igniting something within her.
"Yes." She mumbles quietly. Her hands on his jaw as their lips connected for the first time. It was slow, and loving. Becca could feel the love pouring out from Peter as his lips melded with hers. And Peter could feel the same. When the two broke apart. They were needing to catch their breaths. Both smiling wide with glee as they couldn't look away from each other.
"Wow.." Peter breathed out.
Becca's face was flush and her lips itched slightly. Her fingers cautiously grazing over her lips, "I didn't expect our first kiss like that."
"On the balcony where i fell in love with you?" Peter asks.
"No, with you upside down." She states, laughing quietly.
