05. Senses

Becca sat on her bed as Peter hung from the ceiling, testing his new web fluid. It had been a few weeks since the initial bite and Peter was adjusting smoothly. He had gained control over his heightened senses, the only time they would painfully spike is if he was woken up suddenly without warning, Becca had learned that their first day of school with his new powers. Their alarm went off as normal and it took them an hour to calm him and his senses down. Now he used his phone's buzzing system to gently wake him up.

The two soon started working on how strong he actually was. Becca was strong, she was injected with the super solider serum when she was still in Hydra. She wasn't as strong as her father and uncle though, she was still young in her body chemistry. She trained Peter in defense techniques, talking about her past in the Red Room came up several times during that. Peter realized that he didn't know who Becca truly was until he learned more about her past.

Becca smiles from her spot on her bed, watching her best friend closely, "I think it works. You've been dangling upside down for a good two hours now. The blood flow doesn't go to your brain? It would for me."

Peter shakes his head, gripping the webbing tightly as he flips himself onto his top bunk, dangling upside down, "No, and if it does it doesn't bother me." He says, "I feel like apart of me is actually spider now. It's weird."

"It's not weird to me. You forget that my uncles can turn into a giant green rage monster and can control thunder and lightning with a simple wave of his hammer." Becca teases, smiling softly as she writes their information down for her mother. They had been keeping track of what they learned about Peter's new way of living and sending it over to Becca's mother. The Mom had considered making a sense deprivation room for Peter at the Facility if it ever came to a point where his senses were too much for him to handle on his own.

Becca grabs the apple from her bedside table, throwing it at Peter to test a theory she had just thought of.

"Fia!" He exclaims as he catches the apple with ease. His eyes go wide as he stares at his hand, "I- I caught it. I didn't even know it was coming at me."

The girl nods, smiling, "Enhanced reflexes. You can sense things that are coming towards you before anyone else can." She states, "That's really cool, Benji."

Peter grins, nodding, "That's amazing." He mutters, then thinks, "Now that i have the web fluid down, i need some way to distribute it with ease. If i'm swinging to and from buildings i need it to be quick and seamless." He lists off. Becca jotting down what he's saying in her notes so they don't forget, holding up her bag of Doritos for him. He grabs a chip as he hangs by his feet from the railing of his top bunk.

Becca nods, "Well you'd be swinging from it, so they need to be on your wrists." She points out, "Maybe some of your fingers can trigger a release?" She thinks aloud, gesturing her idea with her hands, "Thwip!" She exclaims, smiling up at him.

"Thwip?"

"That's what i think the sound of your webs coming out would sound like." Becca states, showing him her two middle fingers pressed down to the edge of her palm, almost like a rock and roll symbol. "Something like this maybe?"

Peter nods, "I think that would be perfect."

"Have your senses been acting up at all?" Becca asks as she goes through her chart of things, "Has the vibrating been working better than the alarm?"

Peter nods, "It has, also your technique helps me too." He says. Becca had come up with a special technique of waking him up, she would scratch the back of his head while whispering in his ear to wake up. It gave him a sense of relief. The room has to be silent and the curtains shut or else the light would affect him badly.

"Good." Becca says as she blushes briefly, causing Peter to chuckle.

"Your heartbeat spiked." Peter comments as swings himself off the bed, sitting down on his desk chair, spinning it around for fun, "It's nice to have someone to talk too about all of this. I think if i was doing this alone, i'd feel so isolated."

Becca nods slowly, "That's how i felt for a long time. No one was my age that had any form of abilities." She states, Becca never had anyone to coach her and guide her through her new life as a super solider. She was thrusted into that life and told to kill Nick Fury and her mother. She had no time to adjust, the scientists and doctors didn't care about her wellbeing at all. They never had before, why would they have started then.

Peter nods slowly, standing up from his seat on his desk chair and walks over to Becca. He sits down beside her, taking her hand into his. Their fingers interlock subconsciously. "Well, we're in this together now, Fia." He reminds her. He hesitates when he leans towards her, he catches himself and backs up slightly. "H- How are things with you and Harry?" He asks, changing the subject. Harry and Becca had grown closer together in the few weeks since Peter was bitten. He didn't know why he didn't like it. But he still wanted to support his best friends.

"Huh? Oh, we're good. He told me he likes me more than a friend three days ago. He told me to think about it before giving him his answer." Becca responds, pushing her long brown hair behind her ears, "I like him, but i think i'm better off just being friends with everyone right now. Do you think i should say yes?"

Peter's eyes go wide, he remembers Harry, Ned and him talking about things at lunch the previous day. They had commented again on how different Peter looks and has been acting, but the boy had always been prepped with answers for anyone since the bite. He remembers Harry asking Ned if asking Becca out was a good idea. Ned had agreed whole heartedly, thinking the two of them would be perfect together. Harry asked Peter next. The Parker boy didn't know how to respond. "Go with your gut." He told Harry, and that's what he was going to tell Becca.

"You should just go with what your gut tells you. If you don't think you're ready for a relationship then don't force yourself into one. That wouldn't be good for either of you." Peter tells Becca truthfully. "But if you feel ready, and you like Harry a lot, then go with it."

Becca felt a piece of herself break away when Peter told her this. Since the bite, she felt a stronger connection to Peter. Stronger than her connection she had with Harry. She secretly wanted her best friend to tell her to not go for it, that he didn't want her to be with Harry because he liked her. She knew she needed some outside advice. She knew who she needed to talk too.

"You know that what you want to happen will most likely never happen." The melodic voice of Becca's godmother rang in the teenager's head. "You can't expect him to fight for you when you've shown only an interest in this Harry boy, Rebecca Darling."

Becca smiled at her godmother, Margaret Carter, better known as Peggy. The godmother was stunned into silence when Becca first walked into her room. But she was so relieved to see her beautiful goddaughter alive and happy. After so many years of pain.

"I know, but i just had that small glimmer of hope.. that Peter liked me." Becca mumbles, holding onto Peggy's frail hand.

Peggy chuckles, sighing as she watches her goddaughter. "And have you told him that you like him?" Becca opens her mouth to speak but Peggy shushes her, "No, you haven't. So how do you expect him to tell you if you haven't told him?"

"I- I don't know.. I guess i wanted him to take the first step." Becca mumbles.

Peggy sighs, smiling softly. "I'm going to tell you what i told your mother. She was in this very same position concerning your father."

"Papa? I thought they were always together."

"Heavens no, they didn't become a couple until your uncle and mother saved your father's unit from Schmidt's forces. But what i'm telling you is that, she was nervous that your father didn't like her the way she did."

"Really? What did you tell her."

"I told her that how could she possibly know if he doesn't see her as a sister, or a friend, or something more if you don't tell him." Peggy pauses as she takes the girl's hands firmly into her own, "You will never know unless you go for it. And if it doesn't end up working out in your favor? Screw him. If he can't see the beautiful girl in front of my eyes as she is, then he doesn't deserve you. Sometimes it's up to us women to take that leap of faith."

Becca grins, "I remember Mama telling me something like that." She says, but she hesitates, "But what if he doesn't feel the same? And we lose our friendship over it. He's the only person my age who understands me, and vice versa.."

"If he's truly your friend like you say he is. Then he wouldn't break up your friendship. He'd work it out with you." Peggy points out, "But from what you've told me, i'd like to speak with him." The godmother says, "He's outside isn't he?"

Becca's eyes widen, nodding, "He is.." She trails off, "I'll get him then." The teenager says, kissing her godmother's cheek as she stands up from her seat beside the godmother's bedside. She walks out of the room, looking at Peter. He's rested against the wall outside of the room with earbuds in his ears so he doesn't over hear their conversation, "She wants to meet you." Becca says.

Peter's eyes widen, "The Peggy Carter wants to meet me? You're sure? I'm nobody." He sputters as he takes the earbuds out. He kicks himself off the wall, staring at his best friend.

"She does. I'll wait out here." She says, taking the earbuds, putting them into her ears and choosing a different song.

Peter, who's still in shock, walks slowly into the room where the famous Peggy Carter lays in her bed, "H-Hi, Peggy Carter, ma'am." He stutter out, not knowing how to talk to the woman who helped shape the future he lives in now. She founded Shield with Becca's mom and Howard Stark. She was instrumental in women becoming spies for their governments. He admired the woman before him.

"Hello, Mr Parker." Peggy greets back, motioning to the chair beside her bed that Becca had sat in, "Have a seat."

"O- Okay." He stutters, sitting down in the chair. He glances over the pictures on her bedside. He notices one of a young Peggy Carter holding a toddler with the brightest smile on both of their faces. That toddler is Becca. His heart warms at the sight of her as a baby. The life she should have lived but was taken from.

"My goddaughter has told me a lot about you. I just wanted to meet you." The woman tells the boy, smiling softly, "So you have abilities now, am i correct?"

Peter nods, "Yeah, i do. It's all still so new, but at the same time, i've never felt more alive." He explains, glancing down at his hands. He tugs at his sleeves, seeing his web shooters on his wrists just barely showing out from his jacket sleeves.

"You feel as if it's made you a better version of yourself?" Peggy asks and the boy nods, "That's very much the same as Steve." She tells him.

"I'm thankful for Fia, i don't think i would've been able to do all of this on my own. She's helped me adjust so much." Peter tells Peggy, smiling softly.

"Sounds like you owe her a great debt."

"I guess, yeah. She's my best friend. I feel like i've known her for so long when it's only been four months." Peter says, "She wouldn't see it as a debt. She's always said she enjoys helping me."

Peggy nods, "She's selfless, like her mother is. She helps those in need and those closest to her because she wants to, not because she has to."

Peter nods, "It's one of the things i love about her." He says, then widen his eyes, covering his mouth with his hand, "Did- Did i say love? I meant as in the friendly love. You know.. Best friend love."

Peggy chuckles, "I'm sure." She teases, "So when did you realize that you love her."

"I- What? N-No.. Love? Psshh." Peter rambles, trying to figure out his thoughts as they run a million miles a second. Did he love Becca? He thought he liked MJ, she was nice to everyone, good friends with them. But Becca was there for him through everything. She was the one who carried him to the Tower when he was bitten. She was always there when they were testing out theories about his abilities. Becca was the one who knew who he truly was and stuck by him. "Do i love her?" He asks himself aloud.

A smile plays on the older woman's face, "I think you do. But since the two of you have only known each other for a short period of time, you think it shouldn't be real. That it's happening too fast."

Peter nods, "What do i do then? She likes our friend Harry. What if she doesn't like me back. I don't want to ruin our friendship, that's so precious too me."

"You have to figure that out for yourself. I can't be the one to tell you what to do. That wouldn't be fair to either of you." Peggy reminds him.

"Not even any advice? Cause i could use some right about now." Peter asks breathlessly, his fingers running through his hair. He doesn't want to ruin the friendship he has with Becca, the one person in his life that understands him. That knows him better than he knows himself.

Peggy smiles, "I'm going to tell you what i told Mary when she was struggling with her feelings with Sergeant Barnes." She tells him. She watches him shift in the chair, eagerly awaiting her response. It warms the woman's heart to know that if the two teenagers ever admit their feelings to each other. That they'd be okay. She can see how perfect the two are for each other as well. "You just have to take that leap of faith."
