A Promise to the Dead
"Hey, sorry we're back so late" Scott said as we entered our house.
"I was closing up the Animal Clinic and then picked Becca up from her date. I got more hours to earn a little extra..." Scott trailed off noticing something. Mom turned around and I saw Garrett's bag on the table. "Money" Scott finished.
"How much more did you need?"
"This is payment from the deadpool I-I found it in Garrett's locker"
"This belongs to Derek?"
My brother and I nodded.
"So you're just keeping it safe for him in a gym bag underneath your bed?" Scott and I didn't answer as mom looked between us. "How long have you had it?"
"Too long" I answered.
"You know you have to give it back"
"We were going to" Scott said.
"Do I want to know why you haven't?"
I bit my lip and looked at Scott, waiting for him to answer. "Because of you"
"Me?" she frowned. Then she sighed. "You mean because we've been struggling a little?"
"Mom, we're struggling a lot" I pointed out.
"You can save people's lives. But you can't save them from life. Life is full of struggles" Mom said.
"But it doesn't have to be"
"Honey-"
Scott cut her off. "Do you know what one of these can do" he held up one thousand. "This gets us a new roof"
I picked one up. "And this pays for Stiles' MRI"
"This pays for Eichen house" Scott picked up one more. "And this one means you don't have to work the double shift at the hospital and come home totally exhausted"
Mom dug through the bag. "What about this one" She handed Scott some money which had blood stains coating it.
I felt sick and had too look away. The fact that the blood on there could have been Scott's, Liam's or even Lydia's made me want to vomit.
"I'll give it back to him tomorrow morning" Scott promised, placing a hand on my shoulder and guiding me away from the room. Once we were at the bottom of the stairs I turned around and engulfed him into a massive hug.
"We're safe now Becca. It's okay, no more bloodshed"
"It's not over Scott" I told him. "I know it's not over"
He sighed. "Don't worry about Kate or the berserkers. They won't touch you"
"It's not just me I'm worried about, Scott. What about you?"
"I'll be fine. I can take care of myself"
"If anything ever happened-"
"Don't think like that. I will never leave you and mom. I promise"
"Don't make promises" I swallowed the lump in my throat. My voice was barley above a whisper when I spoke again. "Never make promises" I kissed his cheek and then turned to go upstairs before he noticed the tears in my eyes.
I wish Allison was still here.
~
"That's a lot of weight" Mason said to Liam.
"I'm trying to get ready for the game tomorrow"
"You need a spot?" Mason asked, totally not convinced that Liam could lift that amount of weight.
"No" he said firmly.
I turned to Mason. "Do you?" I raised an eyebrow.
He pushed my shoulder gently. "This is my warm-up you ass" Mason said, placing the mini weights down.
I laughed and looked over to Liam who had a smile on his face. I watched as he leant back and then placed his hands on the bars. Mason came over to his side.
"Wait, what are you doing?" Liam asked, sitting up again.
"I'm spotting you" Mason replied like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"I said I don't need one"
"Are you kidding me? This is like 300 pounds. You're gonna kill yourself" Mason said in confusion.
Liam smirked a little and then lay back down and grabbed the weight. Both Mason and I went to protest but he'd already started to bring it down to his chest. His muscles were flexing and he looked really, really hot...
Liam sat up again and faced Mason."Do I look like I need help?"
Mason shook his head and walked out of the room. "Mason!" I called after him. "Mason wait!" he just continued to walk down the hall. I sighed and debated whether I should go after him or not when I heard Liam grunting and panting.
I turned back around and ran back into the gym. The weights were crushing Liam's chest and he was struggling to breathe.
"Oh my god, Liam!" I ran over and tried my heardest to lift it up but I wasn't strong enough. I yelled out in frustration, tears brimming in my eyes.
Thankfully, my brother entered the room and lifted the weight up with ease. Why is his timing literally always on point.
Liam sat up and started gasping for breath. I moved out of the way, standing next to my brother, as Liam moved to the floor.
"Liam?" Mason said from beside me.
"I'm fine" he answered. Scott and I both knelt down next to him.
"If you don't wanna be with us, that's okay. But don't push your friends away too" Scott said. Liams eyes flickered between me, Scott and Mason.
My brother clapped a hand on Liam's shoulder and gave a brief nod towards me as he left the room.
"I'm sorry" Liam said, looking up at Mason.
"I'm gonna head to class" I sighed as I watched Mason leave. It kills me not being able to tell him what's going on. I don't want to lose him. He's the only normal friend I have.
I stood up and Liam did too. "What's going on with you?" I asked, looking directly into his eyes.
"Nothing" he avoided eye contact.
"Lier. You've been acting paranoid all morning" he looked down at his shoes. "And just in case you don't remember, you almost killed yourself five minutes ago" I snapped.
When he did eventually turn around, his eyes were glassy and his lip was trembling.
"Liam I-" As I reached my hand out to touch him, he grabbed my wrist, pushing me away. "Liam, tell me what's going on?"
"You wouldn't understand"
"I could try. I've been involved with a lot of crazy shit the past few years. Scott was in your position too, you know"
Liam shook his head and a tear slipped from his eye. His voice wobbled when he spoke. "I'm so scared"
I pulled him into a hug and we stayed like that for a minute or so until he pulled away.
"It's over now. No more deadpool"
"No, no, no. I keep seeing the berserkers. They're always after me, they won't leave me alone"
"Liam, it's your imagination"
He shook his head, not believing a word I was saying. "It's real. It feels so real"
"Listen to me" I cupped his face. "Nobody is going to hurt you, okay"
Tears continued to fall down his cheeks and I wiped them away.
"You know why?" He shook his head. "Because fear is not real. It's a product of thoughts that you create" I paused to wipe more of his tears away. "Danger is real. But fear? Fear is a choice"
His arms wrapped around my waist and he pulled me closer to him. I wrapped my arms loosley around his neck.
"I love you" he kissed my lips quickly and lightily.
"I love you too"
We both leant in and our lips met, fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle.
I was in my happy place. The place where my brain is so fuzzy that, for once, I can't think of anything apart from the feel of Liam's lips on mine.
And let me tell you, this is my favourite place to be.
~
"Everything's fine. I got a text from him this morning and he said he might be a little late" Stiles said as we walked into the boys locker room. I probably shouldn't be here.
"How late is late? Is he always late? We're playing Devenford again and this time it's an actual game" Liam said nervously. "He shouldn't be late"
"Who shouldn't be late?" Coach asked. Liam, Stiles and I froze. "And what are you doing in here Rebecca?"
"Just coming to see my favourite coach" I tried to say enthusiastically.
He stared at me blankly. "So who's going to be late?"
Stiles and I looked at Liam who sighed. "Scott and Kira"
"They might be slightly late" Stiles added.
Coach stammered. "Slightly late is still late. What are they doing?"
"They're" I paused before speaking. "They're doing something that's going to make them slightly late" I replied.
"What could Scott and Kira be doing right now that's more important than playing in the first game?"
I looked at Stiles, who looked at Liam, who looked back at me.
"Oh coach"
~
"They're still not here" Liam said as we sat on the benches.
"Okay what's really going on" Stiles said. "Are you nervous about the full moon? It's not for another 24 hours" Liam looked up at the sky where the moon was glistening.
"Liam, you're gonna be fine" I said.
"Just try not to rage out on anyone" Stiles added. I gave him a glare and he mouthed 'what'
"You're not worried?" Liam asked us.
"Okay, I'm mildly concerned. Mildly" Stiles answered.
Liam looked at me. "I'm slightly concerned" I lied.
I'm extremely concerned.
"We're gonna lose without him" Liam said.
He's probably right.
"No we're not. We can be just as good without Scott"
"Are you sure about that" I raised an eyebrow.
"I've been practicing" Stiles said. "Let me tell you something. I'm getting good. Really good"
~
Stiles lied.
So far, he's fallen over, twice, and been knocked over by like five members of Devenford at once. I cringed and put my head in my hands.
"McCall!" Coach yelled at me.
"Yes coach?" I said with a sigh.
"Get your ass on the field!"
"I thought I was a reserve?"
"Not anymore! Go"
I put my helmet on and ran over to Stiles and Liam.
"Why are you playing?" Stiles asked.
"Because you suck. I can play better than that with my eyes closed" I retorted clapping a hand on Stiles' shoulder. He opened his mouth and then closed it again causing Liam to burst out laughing.
We got into our positions and the whistle blew. Devenford scooped up the ball and I immediatley ran after them. Unfortunately, they managed to whizz past everybody and score a goal.
"Come on!" I heard coach yell. The referee blew the whistle signalling it was half time. I followed the other players off the field and made my way over to Stiles and Liam.
"Neither of them are answering. I gotta see what's going on" Stiles started to pick up his stuff.
"You're leaving? What are you going to tell Coach?" All three of us looked over to an infuriated Coach Finstock was having a mini tantrum.
"Uh, you don't tell him anything okay?"
"I'll go with you" I said.
"No, stay here. He might show up"
He then looked at mine and Liam's anxious faces. "You're gonna be okay. All right?" He patted both of our shoulders and then ran over to his dad and Malia.
The whistle blew and Liam and I both stood up to go to the field. As we were walking, Liam suddenly stopped, as if he was listening to something. "Liam-" I started.
"Liam! Rebecca! Get on the field!" I rolled my eyes and ran to my position. I was stood opposite a Devenford player, both of us waiting for the whistle to blow so we could scoop the ball up first.
"Rebecca?" The player asked. I squinted.
"Brett?" The whistle blew and Brett got the ball first and sprinted off. I cursed and ran after him.
Somebody from our team managed to knock the ball from him but he got it back again.
Stupid werewolves.
I watched him pass and turn around to follow his teammate to their goal. I noticed Liam standing in front of them, fear written over his face.
"Liam, for the love of god, move!" Coach yelled. The Devenford players ran straight past him and he turned around, watching them. Brett made the goal and the crowd booed. I sighed and walked back to my position.
The familiar whistle blew again and Liam got the ball and sprinted down the field. He twisted and turned past the Devenford players with ease.
"Come on Liam" I muttered under my breath.
Just as he had almost reached the goal, somebody crashed into him, knocking both of them to the ground.
I started running over but paused when I saw Brett leaning over him. The referee came over and spoke to both of them briefly before blowing the whistle again.
I made my way over to Brett. "What the hell is your problem" I hissed.
"Just looking out for your boyfriend" he winked and then ran off.
"McCall, for christs sake, don't just stand there!" Coach shouted to me. I bit my tongue, trying to hold back a sarcastic comment.
I looked back at Coach and then at Malia who was sat on the bleachers next to...Peter? Why the hell is he here!
"McCall!" Coach screamed at me. I huffed and took off running after the Devenford player, just to shut Coach up.
About five seconds later, the whistle blew, signalling that it was the end of the game.
We lost.
~
After getting changed, I made my way to the boys locker room to wait for Liam. I was planning on waiting outside but I heard Brett's voice and decided to go in.
Liam + Brett = somebody being mauled to death
"Why'd you do that, why'd you help me?" I heard Liam ask.
Brett noticed my presence."Because of her-" he nodded his head in my direction.
Liam looked over at me and frowned.
"-and Scott. They saved me. They saved all of us" he paused before he spoke again. "Do you know how lucky you are?"
"What do you mean?"
"Scott's a True Alpha. That means he didn't get his power because he was born with it. He didn't get it by stealing or killing someone. He earned it"
Brett's eyes met mine and I held his stare. He then looked back at Liam. "You're not strong just because you can lift a lot of weight now. You're strong because you endure. Satomi calls it strength of character"
He looked at me again. "You're lucky to have him. Both of you" He looked back at Liam once more and then left.
I bit my lip and looked down at the floor. "Then why isn't he here?"
~
Liam's step dad took me home after the game because Scott was MIA, Stiles had gone looking for him and Malia was with Satan in a v-neck.
Mom was still working her night shift when I got home. Which meant I had the house to myself.
I hadn't even been home long when I got the call from Stiles.
"Have you found Scott and Kira?" I asked, biting my nails as I waited for a reply.
"No" my heart sunk. "They were supposed to be at Derek's loft but when he got back-" Stiles paused. "when he got back they were gone"
"Gone? Gone where?" Panic bubbled up inside me.
"We don't know. But the window was smashed and there was blood-" he stopped talking, obviously hearing the small sob escape my mouth. "We'll find him. I promise"
He hung up and I sat down against the wall, pulling my knees to my chest.
People need to stop making promises they can't keep.
~
After I'd got the call from Stiles, I grabbed my jacket and ran all the way to Liam's house.
It had started raining on the way there and I was cold, wet and terrified. I think I was crying too but it could have been the rain.
The door opened before I'd even raised my fist to knock and Liam pulled me inside.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know where else to go"
"What's wrong?"
And that's when I broke down.
"He's gone" I cried, falling limply into Liam's arms. "He's gone and I don't know where he is" I sobbed, burying my face in his chest.
"Maybe they just went somewhere else?"
"No, no. Stiles called. They were supposed to be at Derek's and when he got back the window was smashed and there was-" I cut off trying not to burst into tears. "-there was b-blood"
Another sob escaped my lips and Liam rubbed my back comfortingly. "It's okay Becca" he whispered in my ear. I shook my head.
"No, no, no. He's gone" I said pulling away from him. "He's gone!" I shouted.
"Rebecca" Liam reached out to me but I stepped back.
"What am I gonna do? How am I gonna protect mom. What are we supposed to do without Scott?"
"Rebecca please-" He reached out for me again but I pushed him away.
"No, no! Leave me alone!" I backed up against the wall. "I want Scott!" I shouted. Liam bent down in front of me as I furiously wiped away my tears.
"I just want Scott" I choked out.
My phone started ringing and I jumped up, pulling it out of my pocket, not bothering to look at the caller I.D
"H-hello?" I sniffed, wiping away some more tears with the sleeve of my jumper.
"Scott and Kira are missing" Lydia's voice informed me.
"I know. Stiles rang me" It took everything in me not to start crying again.
"We know where they are" she said.
"What? Where? Where are they?" There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Lydia, where are they?"
"Mexico"
A/N
Dun Dunn Dunnnnn
Ugh, did anyone else just wanna hug Liam throughout that episode.
Okay, so I just wanna let you know that next week I go back to school. And next week also happens to be the season 4 finale. I've decided that I'm gonna split that episode into two chapters because it's apparently 1 hour and 15 minutes long. However, because I'm gonna be at school, my updates will probably be a lot later than usual. I will try my best to update as quick as possible but most chapters take between 2-4 hours for me to write and the finale is probably gonna take a lot longer.
I'm also not going to be doing an extra chapter before the next episode as I'm not exactly sure how I will be able to follow this up.
So I'm sorry that it's going to be a long wait.
Anyway, on a lighter note...
THANKS FOR 20k! And almost 750 votes!
When I first started writing this, I literally thought nobody would read it and I'd end up deleting it after a while but it seems like you all like it 😊
Love youuu ❤️
