Afterword

There are no solid numbers on just how many people are victims of human trafficking—it's obviously not a regulated or monitored 'industry'. There are estimates, though. And in 2017, a number of organisations prominent in the fight against slavery estimated the figure to be somewhere in the order of 40 million. That is, on any given day, some 40 million living, breathing human souls are in bondage.

Women make up the majority of those trafficked, with most sold for sexual exploitation, however all ages and genders are represented, with the list of roles in which they might be employed long and not at all distinguished.

Human traffickers are active in almost every country on Earth and the global trade is estimated to be worth around $150 billion dollars each year.

So, while Mica may be fictional, her plight is not. If you'd like to know more, check out organisations such as Anti-slavery International, Free the Slaves and the Polaris Project.

Nick stutters. And he's in good company. Worldwide, about 70 million people suffer from stuttering or dysphemia and most (about 80%) of them are male. Kids who stutter often make a good recovery, with or without intervention, but for adults the prognosis is not always so rosy. Many respond well to treatment but some do not, and in those cases the effects can be significant and wide-reaching. Careers, relationships and—ultimately—self-esteem may all be damaged.

If you'd like more information or some help, the National Stuttering Association or the Stuttering Foundation are good places to start.

I don't have any stats for you on anxiety or depression. Just some advice. If you're affected by either, talk to someone. Google support services such as Beyond Blue, Lifeline, ADAA or Togetherall. Talk to your doctor, to your family, your friends. Talk to someone, to anyone.

Get help. You deserve it—everyone does.
