Chapter 30

The next morning, Kiara woke up to a slight headache. She walked down the hall heading to get some breakfast with everyone. As she walked down the hall, her tail dragged behind her with the tip of it brushing against the ground. When she tried to think about what happened the night before, Kiara drew a blank. She as able to remember up until she had sat on the rock and finished eating, but after that it was a complete blank. She assumed Shura had mixed up their drinks with hers and accidentally gave them all alcohol.

She walked into the room and spotted Rin sitting at one of the tables, looking as tired as she felt. She also saw Bon and Konekomaru sitting at a different table across from where Rin was sitting.

"Morning." Kiara said, sitting down across from Rin.

He perked up, "Oh, hey Kiara." He muttered, before starting to doze off again.

Kiara grabbed a bowl of rice that had been laid out and started eating, listening to Bon's conversation happening behind her.

"The whole night's a blank after I left you guys. It's like I got drunk and passed out or something... but how? Oh son of a- she gave us her drinks by mistake. Some teacher she is." Bon said, coming to the realization of what happened.

So he doesn't remember anything either, huh? Kiara thought.

"How're you feeling now?" Konekomaru asked.

"Eh, I'm okay. You get a chance to pay respects to your folks yet?"

"Yeah. I did."

"Glad you got a chance to. Welp, see you at the meeting." Bon stood up and walked past Rin and Kiara, Kiara silently eating as Rin had dozed off, his head bopping up and down as he tried to stay awake.

"Good morning Okumura! Hoshino!" Someone said, and Kiara looked behind her to see Shima walking up to them and sat right beside her. "Dude, you've got some outrageous bed head. Did you find your way back to your room okay?"

"I don't remember." Rin answered.

Shima laughed and Kiara just stared at him— just yesterday he was avoiding Rin like the plague, but now Kiara could barely sense a trace of fear coming off of him, though speaking of fear— she looked towards Konekomaru, who was starting at the three with a shocked expression on his face.

"Yeah, I bet you don't good thing I didn't drink my juice!"

"Are you okay with talking to him in public like this?" Kiara asked, turning her attention from Konekomaru to Shima.

"Huh? Of course!" Shima said, chuckling.

"Well, Pinkie, looks like you can surprise me." Kiara said.

"Reennnnn-" Someone shouted and Kiara looked over her shoulder to see Kinzo flying through the air straight towards Shima, and next to her, fear wafted off him as his older brother got closer, "Zooo!" Once Kinzo had gotten to them, he kicked Shima in the face, sending the pink haired boy flying and causing everyone to look.

Immediately Kiara started laughing, holding her stomach as she bent over, her tail lashing back and fourth.

"Damn it Kin! What the hell was that?" Shima asked.

"Huh? What do you mean? That was a flying kick. Man you're dense." Kinzo asked, causing Kiara to start laughing harder.

"You're calling me dense? You jerk!"

"Renzo, looks like you're doing alright." Someone said, and Kiara looked up to see the man from before— the one who had gotten into a fight with Mamushi and ended up sending his K'rik straight into her ribs. His name was Juzo if she remembered correctly.

"Except for my head." Shima said, crawling back to where he had been seated before he had been kicked in the head. "Anyway, Juzo, these two right here are my buds, Okumura and Hoshino."

"Oh ho, nice to finally meet you two! I'm Juzo!"

"Yeah, I got acquainted with you yesterday. And you K'rik." Kiara said, and he looked down at her, recognizing her from the incident yesterday. He walked to sit next to Rin while Kinzo sat next to Shima. "Yeah, sorry about that, though I head that Torako patched you up just fine!"

Kiara nodded, taking a bit of her food, "No hard feelings."

He grinned and turned his attention towards both Rin and her, "Anyways, I'm Renzo's big brother."

"Wow, look at that, someone who seems kinda sane in the Shima family." Kiara muttered, looking beside her to see both Shima and Kinzo choke on their food and look towards her. She just shrugged, "I mean, I'm not wrong, am I?"

"Hey, Koneko!" Juzo shouted and Kiara took a sharp breath when the boy's fear spiked up even higher than it was before. "You wanna... come eat with us?"

"Oh... thanks, but I'm already finished." He said, placing his chopsticks down and heading out of the room.

"What's his deal?" Juzo asked in confusion.

"He's scared." Kiara said, getting the attention on her.

"Why do you think that?"

"Think? I know. I'm sure you guys were told, but with my dad being who he is, I'm able to sense the fear of those around me. Whenever Miwa is near either Rin and me, his fear spikes to unimaginable heights. Gets kinda hard to breath if I'm being honest."

"You can feel other people's fear? Does that mean-" Shima started.

"I know exactly how scared you are of spiders and bugs and it is hilarious." Kiara said, watching as Shima paled ever so slightly.

"So he's scared?" Rin asked, looking down at his food with a saddened expression.

"Eh, don't be upset. That kid's scared of a lot of things. But, I mean, if Pinkie here changed his mind and is now comfortable to sit with us to eat then who knows, maybe Miwa will be able to change as well." She stood up and gave them a smile, "Anyways, I'll be off, I didn't get a lot of work done yesterday so hopefully I'll be able to help out a bit more today." She waved and walked out of the room, heading down the hall in thought.

Later that evening, after Kiara had helped make some remedies and helped with some of the sick, she was walking down the hall, stopped by someone running up from behind her.

"Hey, Kiara!" Rin shouted, "You've known about your demon stuff for a longer time than I have, right?"

"Since I was seven... so I guess." She said.

"Awesome! Come with me!"

Rin had dragged Kiara up to the roof, where there was a pile of melted candles off to the side, three candles set up in a line. Rin explained that he had to light the wiks of the candles on the end, but not the middle, and he said that he was having trouble with it but he had no idea why.

"Alright, show me how you've been doing it." She said, walking over and sitting beside Shura.

Rin nodded and after a second he let out a shout of anger and the two candles on the sides were engulfed in flames— completely. The wax melted and Rin grabbed the fire extinguisher and put the flames out, two scorch marks appearing from uncle the candle.

"I've seen enough." Kiara said, standing up.

"You have?" Shura asked, "You think you can help him?"

"Well, I'm not sure how similar my abilities are to his flames, but I can try to help him with what I know from my own training." She turned her attention to Rin, who had set out three new candles in front of him and was looking at Kiara. "Alright, spawn boy, here's the main problem I saw, you're way to pissed off."

Rin flinched his tail flicking angrily behind him, "What do you mean, huh? I'm always calm!"

"Case and point." Kiara said. I can see I have a lot of work to do with him. This will be... trying. "Your flames aren't doing what you want because you're too mad to focus on what exactly you want them to do." She placed her hand on her hips, "Now, sit down."

In front of her, Rin sat criss cross on the ground, looking up at Kiara.

"I want you to close your eyes and calm yourself down. Right now you're too agitated to do anything with your flames correctly."

"You want me to meditate?" Rin asked.

"If you want to learn to control your flames and not, you know, burn your friends alive, then yeah. I want you to meditate."

Rin's shoulders slacked, but he closed his eyes, "Now what?"

Now what? I have no fucking idea. Honestly I don't know if any of this will actually work. Mephisto just kinda, made me pissed enough until my abilities showed themselves- Kiara thought, though she continued on, acting as if she knew exactly what she was doing as she started to bullshit advice. "Uh, visualize the candles." She watched as his face scrunched up, and after a second she continued, "Take a deep breath and imagine the candles on the ends lightning up, a gentle blue flame flicking with the breeze."

Rin's face relaxed and he took a deep breath, Kiara looked from the flame to the candles, her eyes widening as she watched the two candles on the ends light, a blue flame flicking in the air.

What the fuck? That actually worked?? Kiara thought.

Rin peeked open his eye, and Kiara watched as he saw the candles and an excited grin appearing on his face as he jumped up, pointing towards the candles, "Shura! I did it! Look!" He exclaimed, his tail waving around behind him with excitement.

"You sure did." Shura said, her voice sounding as shocked as Kiara was feeling.

Though the joy as short living as Rin's excitement caused the flames to poof up and engulf the entire candles, melting the wax and scorching the roof under it. Rin's tail dropped as the excitement faded from his face.

Kiara looked from the candles to Rin, a reassuring smile on her face, "Hey, you got it there for a bit. Getting a hold of your abilities isn't easy, and you're pretty new to the demon thing so—"

"I'm just gonna try harder!" Rin shouted, extinguishing the flames before they burned the inn down. He looked up at Kiara once the fire was out, "Though thanks to you, I know I'm gonna start making progress!"
