11- The Carnival Incident

They were driving to a carnival. Adam didn't want to after what happened, but he didn't want to tell his friends and ruin the fun. They were getting closer to it. Adam felt sick. All his friends singing along to the song on the radio was tuned out by him, the moments of what happened showing themselves in small glimpses through his head.

I should tell them, he told himself, but he couldn't bring himself to. What if they didn't want to hang out with him anymore? They'd think he's weird, overreacting, that he needs to get over it, and they'd leave him. No one would come to pick him up. A miracle it would be if his dad cared at all.

"Hey, you ok, Adam? You haven't been doing anything the entire ride," his friend, Lacy, says to him, tapping his shoulder.

"Hm? Yea, I'm fine. Are we almost there?" He assures her, removing himself from his thoughts.

"We're here now, everyone's outside waiting for you."

He looks outside, his eyes meeting the gaze of his two friends, waiting expectantly for him and Lacy to get out. "Oh."

Lacy and Adam get out of the car, joining Mason and Isaac, his other two friends.

"Come on, let's go," Adam says, walking towards the entrance to the carnival.

He stops at the front entrance, staring up at the sign. "Fun Times Carnival," it reads. Just like before. When it happened.

"Hey, man, you good?" Isaac asks, removing Adam from his trance.

"Huh? Yea, I'm fine. Let's go." The two walk over where Lacy and Mason are.

"Mom? Mom!" He shouts. He couldn't find her. He needed to find her. It's way too dangerous for a little boy like him to be all alone. This was nothing like when he lost her in the store. The store was smaller. The store didn't have loud music and laughter all around. He can't find her. Not in this place.

"Are you ok, honey? Where's your parents?" A woman asks him.

He was lost. After winning at ring toss, all of Adam's friends seemed to disappear. He was planning on giving the prize, a stuffed toy panda, to one of his friends that wanted it. But now, he was only mindlessly walking about the large place, trying to find everyone else.

Everyone was gone, now. No one around. Adam didn't know what happened. The place wasn't closed. The music was still playing. He could still hear the laughter from the children, he could still feel people bumping into him, but no one was to be seen.

"Hello?" He asks, hoping for someone to run out and say, "I'm here, Adam! You're not insane, it's just your imagination!"

But, no one came out. No one said he wasn't insane, and he was convinced he was.

"Adam," a voice whispers. "It's me, Adam. Your mother. I'm not dead."

He tries to ignore it. He's just hearing things.

"Adam, it's me. Come find me." The sound of someone running startles Adam.

"Who's there?" He asks to no one in particular. It can't be his mother. She's dead. She's not alive, she's resting.

"You didn't find me."

He is grabbed from behind and dragged away. He screams. He tries to get away. It is useless. His head is ripped off by the creature. Each of his limbs are taken off as if they were a child's toy.

---------

A scream is heard from a woman as she stares down at the decapitated limbs of Adam.
