Zemo's Penance (Civil War-Final Part)

The Quinjet is seen being brought down onto a snowy surface which lands next to a caterpillar truck. Inside, Bucky Barnes can be seen taking a machine gun from a gun rack labeled "Romanoff". Bucky and Steve Rogers are seen standing next to each other as they wait for the exit ramp to fully descend.

"You remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?" Steve asks, deciding to pass the time with a conversation.

"Was that the time we used our train money to buy hot dogs?" Bucky asked, chuckling.

"You blew three bucks trying to win that stuffed bear for a redhead," Steve tells his friend, seeing that the exit ramp is almost down.

"What was her name again?" the Winter Soldier asks the Super Soldier.

"Dolores," Steve reminds his friend as he and Bucky walk down the now open exit ramp. "You called her doll."

"She's gotta be a hundred years old right now," Bucky states.

"So are we pal," Steve tells his friend, placing his hand on Bucky's shoulder.

Now wearing his helmet, Steve walks with Bucky up to the entrance that's set in rock and they see that's it's open.

"He can't have been here more than a few hours," Captain America says, readying himself for a fight.

"Long enough to wake them up," Bucky says gravely and the two enter the old HYDRA facility.

As they walk, Steve leads them into the cast bunker. They travel down into the depths inside a caged elevator. They make it go up and it soon stops in the bowls of the bunker, its doors sliding open. Steve nods to Bucky and heaves up the cage door as the Winter Soldier readies his heavy duty machine gun and they walk along a corridor, keeping close to a wall. Bucky looks into an alcove full of junk and he and Steve move on up some stairs. At the sound of a loud thud they spin around, aiming their attention and weapons down the corridor.

"You ready?" Steve asks.

"Yeah," Bucky responds as they await their enemy.

Then a red hot glow can be seen from the door at the end of the corridor and the two soldiers look in confusion. Suddenly two flaming skeleton hands rip through the solid steel door and grip each side, easily pulling the doors apart to reveal the Ghost Rider and Iron Man right behind him.

[James'/Ghost Rider's POV]

After I pry open the doors with ease, I look to see Rogers and Barnes looking at me and Tony in surprise. The two of us then walk up to the two as I let my fire die down, making me revert to my human form and Tony retracts his helmet.

"Sup, soldier boys?" I greet the two.

"You seem a little defensive," Tony says and Steve walks up to him, his shield in front of him.

"It's been a long day," the Super Soldier states and I chuckle lightly.

"Ease up, man," I tell Rogers. "We're here as friendlies, not enemies. No harm will come to you two unless needed."

"If you're not here to fight us, then why are you here?" Steve asks us.

"Could be your story's not so crazy. Maybe," Tony says. "Ross has no idea we're here. We'd like to keep it that way. Otherwise, I gotta arrest myself."

"Pfft! As if you can arrest me," I say and Tony rolls his eyes.

"Well, that sounds like a lot of paperwork," Captain America says and lowers his shield. "It's good to see you, Tony. And nice to know you're on our side, Rider."

"Please, call me James," I tell the Super Soldier and turn to the still defensive Barnes. "Stand down, soldier. We have a truce here. I'm not after your soul, so you can lower your gun."

Barnes does so, but slowly as he's still a bit on edge. He turns to me and speaks.

"So, no innocent souls crying out for vengeance?" the Winter Soldier asks me and I laugh.

"Steve told you about that, didn't he?" I ask with a smile. "No, no souls screaming. At least against you that is."

"Good to know," Barnes says and we all laugh.

We then start to walk around the HYDRA facility, all ready to fight another Winter Soldier that Barnes told us about. Tony had his helmet back on and I was back in my Rider form. We soon make it to an open area with large glass cylinders.

"I got heat signatures," Tony informs us.

"How many?" Steve asks.

"Uh, one," the genius answers the Super Soldier.

As we venture further into the chamber, I see smoke flow from the cylinders and look to see bodies inside each one.

"What the hell?" I question as I look around, bewildered.

Then a speaker crackles to life and a male voice speaks from it.

"If it's any comfort, they died in their sleep," the voice informs us, mainly Barnes. "Did you really think I wanted more of you?"

"What in the...?" the HYDRA-made Super Soldier questions as he looks around.

"I'm grateful to them, though. They brought you here," the voice says and a light behind a steel door turns on ti reveal Helmut Zemo.

Cap, seeing his enemy, throws his shield at the doors only for it to bounce off and back to Cap.

"Please, Captain. The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets," Zemo informs the Super Soldier.

"I'm betting I could beat that," Iron Man declares, his ego kicking in.

"Oh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time," Zemo says. "But then you'd never know why you came."

"We'll find out when I pry the info from your burning body!" I shout, threatening the Sokovian.

"Easy there, Rider," Zemo tells me. "I am not here to fight, but to talk."

"You killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?" Steve asks Zemo. "To talk?"

"Of course. In fact, I thought about nothing else for over a year," Zemo states. "I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized... there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw."

"You're Sokovian, so is this what that's about?" I ask. "To avenge your fallen home?"

"Sokovia was a failed state long before the Avengers blew it to Hell!" Zemo shouts angrily. "No. I'm here because I made a promise."

"You lost someone?" Steve asks, studying the man.

"Tch! lost everyone. And so will you," Zemo says. "An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumples from within? That's dead... forever."

Suddenly a computer screen in front of us comes to life to show a frozen image of a secluded.

"Wait... I recognize this road," Tony states and I look at the screen.

A video plays, showing a car crashing. Then it shows Barnes murdering two people, a man and a woman. From looking at Tony, he was filled with grief and sorrow and I can instantly tell that whoever these two were were close to Tony. Soon, Barnes has killed the two and shoots at the camera which ends the video.

I turn to look at Iron Man again to see that he was upset. He then lunges at the Winter Soldier in anger but I stop him before he could do anything.

"Easy, Stark," I tell the Avenger. "Easy."

I could hear Tony crying and I felt terrible for Tony. He just witnessed not only those people's deaths, but their murderer doing it as well.

"Did you know?" Tony asks Steve in anger.

"I didn't know it was him," Steve says, obviously lying.

"Don't bullshit me, Rogers!" Tony yells. "Did. You. Know?"

After a small moment of silence, Steve answers.

"Yes."

Stark looks at Rogers and then at Barnes, his eyes filled with anger and hatred.

"Kill them," Tony tells me.

"Excuse me?" I question.

"Kill them!" Tony orders me. "I don't care if Steve is still breathing, I just want that bastard dead!"

Tony points to Bucky who was aiming his gun at me and every-so-often switching to Tony but then back at me.

I look at the two Super Soldiers as I answer.

"No."

"But isn't this you're job?" Tony asks me. "To take down the guilty and avenge the innocents?! Then you should kill this man because he's killed PLENTY of innocents."

"That's not how it works," I inform Stark. "I'm supposed to judge before bringing vengeance, and from I can judge from Bucky he doesn't like what he did and doesn't want to ever do that again. He. Is. Innocent."

Tony looks at me in shock, but I continue to speak.

"I am not here to kill Bucky Barnes, but to take down Helmut Zemo. HE is the real villain here, NOT Barnes. Remember: he was being mind controlled, Zemo wasn't. Come find me when your head is clear."

I turn away from Stark and make my way to Zemo. As I walk, I can hear the sounds of fighting and gunshots echoing throughout the chamber.

"Do you really think you can get to me?" Zemo asks me through the speakers. "Like I said, this door is supposed to withstand UR-100 rockets. How can you even find a way to-"

I stop him from talking by tearing my hand through the metal door, completely surprising the Sokovian. I then start to make a hole in the hole to enter the area Zemo was in. Speaking of that man, he was literally shaking in fear as his body refused to let him move. I finally finish making the hole and step through to see that Zemo was now trembling on the floor.

"What was that you said? That I couldn't get to you?" I ask mockingly and get up close to Zemo. "I suggest you run."

He listens to me and starts to run off, but I lied when I told him he can run off. I don't let my prey escape me. EVER.

I unwrap my chains from around my body and throw them at Zemo, making them wrap around his neck. He falls to his back and I pull my chains, dragging the Sokovian male to me.

"N-NO!" Zemo chokes out.

"Y-YES!" I retort back and drag Zemo all the way to me.

I grab him and turn him around to face me. He's terrified, but who wouldn't be when they're up against the Ghost Rider?

"Helmut Zemo, you are GUILTY!" I tell the man. "Your soul is stained by the blood of the innocents, all because of your selfish revenge! Look into my eyes, Zemo. Feel their pain."

At these words, Zemo screams in pain as all the ever gave to others was dished right back to him. What seemed like a lifetime to Zemo was actually only a few seconds in reality as his soul burned from my Penance Stare. In those mere seconds, the job was done and what was left of Zemo's eyes were nothing but brimstone.

I drop Zemo's limp body to the ground and turn to see T'Challa with his suit on.

"Your highness," I greet. "Lemme guess, I stole your kill?"

"No," T'Challa tells me. "Whatever you did to Zemo, he deserved it. I was overcome by anger which led me to almost kill an innocent man. Thank you for getting to him before me."

"It's all right, T'Challa," I tell the Black Panther. "I'm just doing my job."

"I see," the Wakandan male says. "Tell me, what is it that you used against Zemo?"

"It's called the Penance Stare," I tell T'Challa. "It allows me to look into one's eyes and dish back the pain they've ever brought onto others, whether it be physical, mental, or emotional. But... he was only a man who was blinded by rage and anger, which led him to do what he did which led to this. I wish I didn't do what I did, but it had to be done."

"Sometimes we must do things that we don't want to do," T'Challa tells me, "but those sort of things must be done."

I look at the Black Panther as I slowly go back into my human form.

"You're right," I tell him. "You're right."

[One Week Later...]
[No One's POV]

Tony is seen helping Rhodes walk on parallel bars, tech on his legs helping him do so.

"It's just the first pass," Tony says to his friend.

"Yeah."

"Give me some feedback," Stark tells Rhodes. "Anything you can think of. Shock absorption. Lateral movement. Cup holder?"

"You may wanna think about some AC down in- AH!" Rhodes says only to fall to his hands and on the floor.

Tony goes down to help his friend up.

"Let's go," he says, offering Rhodes his hand. "I'll give you a hand."

"No, no, don't. Don't help me. Don't help me," Rhodes tells Stark as he gets on his knees amd sits on the ground. "138. 138 combat missions. That's how many I've flown, Tony. Every one of them could've been my last, but I flew 'em. Because the fight needed to be fought. It's the same with these Accords. I signed because it was the right thing to do. And, yeah, this sucks. This is... this is a bad beat. But it hasn't change my mind. I don't think."

Rhodes sees that Tony is still holding out his hand and gives him a crooked smile, taking the hand and standing back up with Tony's help.

"You okay?" Tony asks his friend.

"Yeah," Rhodes says. "I'm fine."

Then a knocking is heard and the two turn to see a FedEx delivery guy with a package and a letter in his hands.

"Are you Tony... "Stank"?" the delivery guy asks which makes Rhodes crack up.

"Yes, this is--this is Tony "Stank". You're in the right place. Thank you for that!" Rhodes says and turns to "Stank". "I'm never dropping that, by the way. And I'm making sure hears this. He won't let you live this down either. Table for one, Mr. "Stank". Please, by the bathroom."

Tony rolls his eyes and takes the mail. He brings them to an office and opens the letter first. It said that it was from James so this was gonna be good. Tony opens up the letter and reads it.

Dear Tony Stark,

As you can already tell, this is James. How've you been? Zarathos says hi. Man, I can't believe it's only been a week since everything happened.

Anyways, I need to thank you... for everything. You helped me when I thought no one else would and I actually helped the Avengers. The fucking AVENGERS!

As James' voice is heard reading the note to Tony, the same young adult is seen riding his Panhead Chopper down a street somewhere in the east with a smile on his face. Then James hears a scream and turns his head with a smirk, already knowing whats going on and what he's about to do it.

I owe you an undeniable debt and I'll be glad to do anything that you need.

A large man is seen robbing from a younger woman and may even be trying to rape her. Then a flaming skeleton hand grips his shoulder and the man turns to see the Ghost Rider, making his eyes go wide in shock and fear.

So if you need anything, just call. I'm always willing to help. And if you need to find me...

The Ghost Rider is seen standing triumphant as he has taken down the mugger and possible rapists, his flames glowing brightly as he looks at the camera.

... just follow the flames. You'll always find me eventually.
