Walking Among The Dead
[James' POV]
"Marcy, do you think this is a good idea?" I ask my sister as we walk toward the local cemetery. "If Mom and Dad find out I brought you hear, I'm dead!"
My twin sister, Marcy, laughs at my fear and turns her head to look at me as we walked.
"You need to lighten up, Jamie!" Marcy tells me as she continued walking. "Nothing's gonna happen! I'm just here for the school newspaper!"
"Like anyone's gonna read about a cemetery," I say.
"You will," Marcy tells me and I roll my eyes. "And don't worry! We'll be quick. In and out!"
"Okay, Marcy," I say. "But you better be quick! I don't wanna be hear long. It's giving menthe creeps."
Marcy rolls her eyes and we arrive at the cemetery. Marcy went to tombstone to tombstone as she did research on them as well as on the cemetery. I follow her to make sure she's safe and we have some conversations with each other about school and other things. Then she brought up The Subject.
"Soooooo.... when are you gonna ask Nikki out?" Marcy asks me and I blush.
"H-hey! We're here to do research for the school newspaper," I tell Marcy, "not to talk about my love life!"
"Whatever," my twin says as she rolls her eyes. "You should tell her how you feel though. If you don't, someone else would take her and you'll miss your chance."
"Ha! What chance?" I aks Marcy. "How do you even think up these things, Marce? Nikki is one of the most popular girls in school. Me and her? Never happening."
"C'mon! Who wouldn't want you as their boyfriend?" Marcy asks me as she wraps her arm around me, giving her signature side hug. "Your kind, caring, loyal, smart, strong, and your a mechanic! Who wouldn't want that?"
"Those who want money and looks," I say blankly.
Marcy looks at me with a "Really?" face but eventually sighs and walks off.
"You're an idiot, you known that?" Marcy asks me.
"Well, we are siblings," I say with a smile.
Marcy quickly throws a small rock at me but I block it with ease. I laugh and go to follow my twin, but before I even took a step I see something. It was a pale man with short blonde hair in a black suit with a cane in his hand.
I rub my eyes to make sure that I was seeing correctly, and after I did he was gone. Jeez, I play too many suspense and horror games.
"James! C'mon!" Marcy shouts, calling for me.
"Coming!" I say and run to my sister.
I soon make my way to her and she looks at me with a hand on her hip.
"What took you so long?" Marcy asks me, smirking.
"Thought I saw something," I inform my twin. "But it was nothing. Just my eyes playing tricks on me."
"You play way too many video games, Jamie," Marcy tells me.
"I said the same thing," I say and we both laugh.
After we finish laughing, we hear a gruff male voice.
"You got the shit?" the voice asks and me and Marcy turn to the origin of it.
"Of course," another voice says. "Do you have the girl?"
By now, Marcy has dragged me with her to see what was going on. We were hiding behind some rocks and a crumbling wall. It was a perfect place to watch too. They couldn't see us, but we could see them. There were two groups. One wore red robes and all had melee weapons while the other looked like a gang of sorts and had guns.
"Right here," the first man says and snaps his fingers.
Another man came up into view with a lady with long blonde hair in his grasp. They walk to the front of the group and I can see that the lady was crying. She was being held hostage... or worse cuz the red guys didn't look like people who would use her for pleasure. No, they seem to have much worse intentions for her.
Then the leader of the red group did a "Come here" hand motion to one of his members and another man in red walked up with a briefcase in hand. He walked up to the man with the girl and gave him the case, who in return took the girl and dragged her to tbe red group. Then I made the mistake of shouting.
"NO!" I scream and instinctively sat up so they groups can see me.
"KILL HIM!" the leader of the gang ordered his fellow gang members and they rained lead at me.
Thankfully Marcy pulled me down before the could touch me. One did graze my arm though and I hissed in pain.
"What are you thinking?!" Marcy asks me.
"You know that I can't just stand here and let that lady get taken!" I retort. "It's against my morals! You know that!"
"I know that!" Marcy tells me. "Just-"
She gets cutoff when a gun cocking sound is heard.
We turn to see a large man in his middle ages pointing a gun at us.
"Sorry, nothing personal kids," the man says. "Just busine- GAH!"
He didn't have time to finish since I threw a good sized rock at his face, cutting him off and making him stumble back. I grab my twin's hand and ran off to find someplace safer to hide. As we run multiple gunshots are heard but none hit us, only hitting the ground or the surrounding objects.
I eventually find a church or something of the sorts and rush into it, Marcy still in my hand. We enter and make our way to the very front of the church, hiding behind a large stone object.
"Okay," I say, breathing heavily and my heart beating so loud anyone could hear it within a mile. "I think we're safe."
"James..." Marcy says weakly and I turn to her.
My eyes widened in horror as I see blood pouring from a wound and staining her clothes. She stumbles forward but I catch her before she hits the ground.
"C'mon, Marcy. Stay with me," I order my sister. "Just give me some time to get us out, and then I'll get you to the hospital."
Marcy said nothing as her breathes become mire rigid and forced. I felt tears threatening to spill from my eyes but quickly wipe them away. I have to stay strong. For Marcy.
"Oh, you won't have enough time for that, child," I hear a soft but sinister male voice tells me from behind. "And even if you escaped, you wouldn't be able to save her."
I turn around to see the same man from before, but he was smiling at me.
"Wh-who are you?" I ask him, my confusion turning quickly into anger. "And what makes you think I can't save my sister?"
"Because I'm able to know things you can only dream of," the man tells me as he crouches down to my level. "My name is Mephistopheles, but you can call me Mephisto."
"Wh-what do you want?" I ask Mephisto.
"I'm here to help you," Mephisto tells me. "I'm just gonna need your full cooperation."
"You... you can save my sister?" I ask Mephisto in hope. "How?"
"I can do a lot of things, James," Mephisto tells me. "But only if you let me."
He offers me his hand and I look at it, contemplating whether or not I should take it or not. I then place my hand on the ground, but it slips a bit and my hand gets cut. I grab my hand in pain and hiss.
"I don't think you have much time to decide, James," Mephisto tells me and I look back at him.
I look down at his hand one last time before deciding. I use my bloodied hand to shake Mephisto's and he smiles.
"Pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Ryder," Mephisto says with a sinister smile.
He pulls away and fades into the dark as I look at where Mephisto use to be in utter confusion. Then I feel a burning feeling in my body and I scream in pain.
LET THERE BE VENGEANCE.
