Chapter 13: a mothers regret

I stood in Jakes embrace; savouring the emotions that I felt from his touch. However in an abrupt moment, it stopped.

The mayor waltzed into the bar, flourishing with authority and power; eying all the towns folk who looked down and separated, allowing him to ease through the large crowd.

Once in front of the mass crowd he eyed the scenario. He looked from mr. Mckulk who was lying currently unconscious on the floor, to Jake, to the way we were holding each other, then to finally lay his eyes upon me.

"Well, this is certainly a messy situation?" The mayor joked, aiming it towards the towns folk.

Abrupt laughter filled the air as the towns folk laughed in a false manner.

The Mayor turned and looked at me and Jake, "Why don't we talk in private?" He asked, however it felt as if it was a demand.

We nodded. The mayor then signalled his hand and some guards entered the premise. I felt Jakes hold tighten, most probably afraid that we will be separated.

The guards walked passed us and grabbed mr. Mckulk, "follow me." The mayor stated towards me and Jake; but my gaze was glued to the unconscious mr. Mckulk and puzzled I wondered, what they would do to him?

Jake walked in front of me; shielding the curious eyes from meeting me. He continued to walk in front of me as he followed the mayor.

As we walked out of the premise I heard my mothers plea. I peaked from behind Jake to see my mother in front of the mayor pleading.

I stepped from behind Jake and ran to my mothers side. She carried on her plea, "please James, don't do this?!".

Hold up! Who's James?

Then the mayor replied, "the almighty Marian rosefield, do you have any idea how much pain you caused me?"

My mother abruptly went silent.

"Of course you don't because you left me-" he started however my mother intervened, "I didn't just leave YOU James I left everyone that I knew." She screamed in his face.

"And what? You went into the city and got married and had your child, to then turn back onto the towns doorsteps after your husbands death?!" He screamed into her face.

"You know it's not like that?! My husband died and once you heard, you demanded I came back to the town; hearing that I had also conceived a child in that time made you want us to come back even more because you wanted my daughter to marry your son?! Just so you can get back at me and try to prove how happy we could have supposably been?!" She continued to scream.

The mayor glared at my mother, "maybe I did do it for that Marian, but haven't you considered the fact that my son needed a wife; I can't let him reign without a wife like I did?!" He screamed.

I just stared bewildered by what they were saying.

My mother then turned towards me and ignored the mayor, "let's go home." My mother demanded.

"But Jake-" I pleaded, looking at a puzzled Jake, "NO?!-" my mother shouted, "I will not let you make the same mistake as me, we will be leaving tomorrow morning for the city?!" She stated.

I did not argue with my mother as she was angry, and my mother is someone who barely ever gets angry; so I knew there was no point in fighting.

Me and her started to walk away but got stopped by an angry looking Jake. He stood in front of me, not allowing me to move forward.

He grabbed ahold of me by my waist and leant down, smashing his lips against mine.

This kiss showed things that I only wished I could feel; the love made me feel wanted, the determination showed how much he didn't want me to leave.

After a few minutes, i pulled away breathless. I stared up into those dazzling emerald eyes which held all the love and protectiveness I could ever ask for.

Jake smiled one of those breathtaking smiles of his and then whispered into my ear, "be mine."

I didn't know how to react; I just stared up into those hypnotic eyes. In that moment of silence my other whispered, "of course!"

I looked over towards my mother, confused.

"Mother what do you mean by, 'of course'?" I questioned.

"Nothing." Is all she said, "well we must get going." My mother urged.

I shook my head at her, "no mother, I want to stay here." I stated; then looked up to see Jake approvingly smile.

"No honey! We have to leave before it's too late." She begged.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I will explain later, we must leave now!" She emphasised the word 'must'.

"But I don't want to leave mother, I want to stay here-" I paused for a moment and looked at Jake, "with Jake."

He smiled a huge smile which entranced me. My mother however was less than pleased, "honey, we can't stay here otherwise what happened in the past will catch up to us and repeat itself." She pleaded.

I replied, "mother, it can't repeat itself if you choose a different path then what the past chose." I still had no clue what she was talking about, but the acknowledge I was using made perfect sense to me.

"And that's why we have to leave?!" My mother stated.

I was quick to reply, "no we don't! We can just choose a different path. There is always more than one choice!" I stated, still enclosed in jakes loving embrace.

My mother sighed, "I guess."

I excused myself and my mother as well as Jake to go and talk about what this whole argument was about.

As soon as we walked through the doors I signalled my mother to sit down, Jake was already with me still hugging me from behind so he just followed me into the dining room and sat next to me whilst my mother sat opposite me.

"Now start from the beginning!" I told my mother.
