chapter five | wicked witchcraft

A lot happened as Juniper adjusted to everything during that first week at Bobby Singer's house.

The following day, Bobby asked her questions about her abilities, and gave him the same answers when the Winchesters asked her. Bobby was just as puzzled as the boys were, but he assured her that he'd look into it with the help from the brothers. That night, just like Juniper had predicted, her name and face was on the news, labeled as a missing person for the last forty-eight hours. The next thing that came on the screen was the faces of Dean and Sam, who were listed as people that might have been involved in her disappearance, along with Eric's murder, which did not come as a surprise with the way Detective Sheridan was asking questions about them the night she was at the station. Bobby fussed the boys out for not being more careful with covering their tracks, but really, Juniper knew they were not to blame, as none of them could take the neighbor's security camera into account.

The next couple days after that, she felt like she was back in a classroom, a feeling she had missed, with all of the books Bobby let her borrow so she could learn more about not only demons but other supernatural creatures that were all over the world. With each new monster and the lore behind them, Juniper didn't realize the extent of what was out there, and while she was a bit scared of that realization, she still wanted to know more and hoped she didn't actually encounter them. The more she kept reading, the more she wondered if she was on her way to becoming a hunter like the Winchesters and Bobby. Maybe it would take a while for it to sink in, but as she continued flipping through the pages to learn more about a new monster, she couldn't help but get homesick again.

She missed Baltimore. She missed her old life. She missed it all.

During those two days, it was a nice distraction from not being able to be back in an actual classroom working on her master's, along with what happened in Baltimore and knowing that Eric's funeral happened and she wasn't there to see him be laid to rest. She figured even if she was back in Baltimore during the service, she doubted Glen and Vanessa would allow her to attend, or maybe the detectives from the police station wouldn't advise going, anyway. Either way, she hated to miss it, wanting to see his face one last time before the coffin would be locked and buried six feet under.

Still, it was during the quiet hours of the night that, even taking what was left of her medication, Juniper found herself crying into her pillow, being the only time she could be alone and the only way that would eventually tire her out. She was sure the others had noticed her swollen eyes the next morning, but none of them questioned her about it, and she was okay with that.

By the end of the week, Dean insisted Juniper learn more about supernatural hunting beyond the books, so one afternoon, he placed three pistols with loaded magazines on the table, deciding now was a good time for target practice.

"You really want her to learn this right now?" Sam asked, sounding a little skeptical about it. "I mean, she's still going through Bobby's books."

"She's gonna have to know how to do it eventually," Dean pointed out. "Besides, she can catch up on reading later, can't she?"

"Well, yeah, but--"

"It's fine," Juniper cut him off with reassurance. "Dean's right. I need to know how to use one."

Dean furrowed his eyebrows. "Have you ever fired a gun?"

Sheepishly, she shook her head. "No." No one in her family ever had a reason to use one, so she had no knowledge of them at all.

Dean then raised his eyebrows in surprise, grinning a little as he grabbed the three pistols from the kitchen table. "Well, you're in for an interesting lesson."

"Which I will be doing," Sam said, taking two of the guns away from Dean.

"What? Why you?"

"Because you're the last person that should be teaching her how to use a gun."

Dean's mouth was left open. "Well, what the hell am I supposed to do, then?!" he asked.

"How about both of you go teach her a thing or two?" Bobby suggested, taking back the guns Sam took and handing one to Juniper. "Y'all are about to give me a headache with your arguin'."

With some groaning, the boys walked out the back door, to which Juniper followed them and closed the door behind her. She felt how heavy the gun was to her hand, despite it being so small, trying to keep it up so that she wouldn't drop it. She thought the two in front of her were bickering back and forth again, but she couldn't quite make out what they were saying.

"Alright, Juniper," Dean started to say, stopping in place once they were far away from the house and in a field. "Now, we use many types of firearms when fighting monsters, and most hunters carry around a pistol or a rifle. This one will be better for you right now." He motioned his small gun in front of her. "But what really matters is what type of rounds you load them with. You remember reading about that, right?"

"Yeah," she said, nodding her head. She thought back to the pages with different pictures and charts of modified bullets and which ones killed certain supernatural creatures that Sam thankfully organized for her.

"Now, for today, we'll just be using standard bullets for target practice," Sam explained to her. "So you've actually never shot a gun before?"

Juniper couldn't help but laugh at being asked the same question. "No, I haven't. Never had a reason to."

"Not even to go hunting for, like, animals or something?" Dean asked.

She scoffed in response. "I can assure you that the Langley family are city slickers." She added another small giggle at the end. "Well, maybe my cousin, Christine, is debatable, but I haven't seen her in years..." When she realized she was getting off the subject, she shook her head. "Sorry. Anyway, when did you two shoot your first gun?"

Sam and Dean eyed each other almost in a suspicious way.

"We were, uh...pretty young," Sam answered, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Yeah, you know, us Kansas boys gotta start at an early age," Dean added, chuckling afterwards.

She briefly shot them puzzled looks. "Okay, well, just please don't let me blow off my finger, or someone else's finger, or any body part for that matter..."

Sam chuckled. "Don't worry. We'll make sure nothing happens."

Juniper nodded her head, still feeling some uneasiness, but hearing Sam's reassurance gave her some consolation that everything would go well during this first lesson.

The first thing they did was show her how to load and unload bullets, which didn't seem too hard for Juniper. She managed to get that part down quickly, which she almost dreaded, because now she had to deal with the shooting aspect of the gun.

Dean demonstrated the stance she should take when firing a gun, and so she paid close attention to his hands and feet a few times before he actually fired the bullets towards one of the targets already set up yards away from them. She was impressed with how he took out every can, but she still jumped at the sound of the gun going off, which was something she would have to work on if she was going to start using one often.

"Alright, your turn. Just like I did it," Dean stated.

"Take your time," Sam added.

Nodding her head, Juniper got into stance, looking down at her feet to position herself on the ground.

"Okay, hold on a sec," Dean spoke up, walking behind her. "Let me just move you rig--"

All of a sudden, as Dean's hands went on both sides of her waist, Juniper let out a gasp and jumped away from him.

"Whoa, whoa!" Dean shouted, putting his hands up in the air in defense, chuckling a little. "I gotta say, I've never had a woman react that way with me before."

"No, it's not you," she quickly replied, shaking her head as she took deep breaths, her heart racing.

Dean's smile dropped, almost looking offended. "Oh." He turned towards his brother. "That kind of hurt."

"I'm sorry," she said, trying to calm down. "It's just...Eric..." Juniper began to picture him and his smile whenever he grabbed her by the waist and kissed her, remembering how sweet those moments were, always letting the embrace linger for just a little bit longer. She enjoyed them a lot, and while she knew moving on was what she had to do, it was something she wasn't quite ready for just yet.

"No, it's my fault," Dean told her once he realized his mistake. "I shouldn't have done that."

After a moment of silence going over the three, Sam cleared his throat. "Okay, well, um, you wanna try and get back to it?"

Once she was calm, Juniper got back into shooting position, only this time, Dean got next to her and showed her how to stand, with Sam motioning where to aim for on the target. With a loud bang echoing in the air and a temporary ringing in her ears, she stumbled backwards and caught herself before she fell to the ground.

"How bad was that?" she asked.

"Well, you missed, if that's what you meant," Sam said. "But it's okay. It's your first time, so don't worry. You'll get the hang of it."

"We definitely gotta work on your stance, though," Dean stated. "It won't help fighting monsters if you fall flat on your ass every time you shoot at them."

She nodded. "Right."

So for a while, Juniper continued firing at the target, and she couldn't help but grow embarrassed and frustrated whenever she missed the target or her feet wouldn't stay still. She was worried if the boys were growing irritated with her failed progress. However, Dean and Sam were patient, correcting her on the things she was doing wrong and demonstrating some more for her to see so she could compare her movements with theirs. Eventually, she barely hit the target a couple of times, which made her excited that she actually did it, even if her aim still needed some work, along with her feet.

By the time the three were just about worn out from target practice, they decided to head towards the shed she had seen on her first night. Stepping inside, Dean pulled out a small cooler left on the floor and opened it, where there was fresh ice and beer inside.

"You a beer kind of girl?" Dean asked Juniper.

"Just saying, he'll be offended if you tell him no," Sam said.

She smiled a little. "Yeah, I like a beer every now and then."

Dean grinned as he opened the bottle and handed her one, to which she accepted and took a swig, sitting down on one of the stools she found in the corner.

"So what do you think of everything so far?" Sam asked.

Juniper shrugged. "I mean, it's a lot, to be honest," she admitted. "I didn't realize how much there actually was to know with being a hunter."

Dean let out a scoff. "Yeah, with all of the lore...er, books out there, there's an endless list of monsters all over the damn place."

"And how do you find them?" she asked.

"Well, in different ways," Sam explained. "Get tips from other hunters, check out local news in other towns, look out for anything suspicious. If something catches our eye, then we'll go see what's going on and decide if it's worth our time."

"And no one else suspects what you're up to?"

Sam let out a chuckle. "We, uh...we tend to lie our way through things so we can dig deeper into the case without anyone actually trying to figure out what we're really up to."

Juniper laughed at this. "So you just pull up in some random town and basically commit fraud to get information you need?"

"Hey, us hunters gotta do what we have to do if we want to gank monsters," Dean spoke up. "Plus, wait until I teach you about credit card scams."

"Dean, you're not going to corrupt her with your credit card scams," Sam said.

"So I guess you teaching her how to hot-wire a car so she can make a quick getaway is off the table, then," the older brother retorted.

Juniper widened her eyes at Sam. "Wait, you've stolen a car before?"

He opened his mouth to speak, shrugging his shoulders. "Like Dean said, us hunters gotta do what we gotta do."

The girl shook her head in disbelief. "This business really is no joke," she commented, drinking more of her beer. She was curious as to what other crimes they had committed in this line of work.

"Yeah, don't we know it," Dean mumbled.

As the three continued with their beers, Bobby made his way to the shed, a house phone in his hand.

"How did target practice go?" he asked, then turned towards the boys. "You idjits actually teach her anything?"

"Oh, yeah, she's already a pro, thanks to me," Dean stated, smirking as he gave her a wink.

Juniper grinned at this.

Bobby rolled his eyes. "Whatever, cocky bastard," he said, then huffed a sigh. "Anyway, I might have a job for y'all."

"What's going on?" Sam asked.

"It better not be another shapeshifter or death omen," Dean stated, almost groaning at saying those words.

"No, it's nothin' like that." Bobby's expression turned baffled. "Since when does Dani practice magic?"

Dean furrowed his brows in confusion at the random question. "She never has. You know how she feels about that crap."

"I know," the older man said. "But I just got off the phone with Digger, another hunter I worked with back in the day," he explained. "He was passin' through Minnesota when saw her with some sort of bag on her."

Sam raised his eyebrows. "Like a hex bag?"

"The only kind we know witches carry," Bobby said. "Anyway, he thinks she's been there a while, a week at least, since the locals there sure as hell were friendly with her from what he saw. By the time he was goin' to see what was up, she vanished. No idea where she went."

Juniper sat in her seat, being quiet as she took more sips of her beer, listening to the conversation.

"Do you think she's even in Minnesota, still?" Sam questioned.

"It's not like her to stay in one place for too long," Dean pointed out.

Bobby shrugged. "Well, it wouldn't hurt to go check it out and make sure she's not in danger or somethin'."

Dean scoffed in response. "Yeah, Dani in danger? That's hilarious."

"Dean, what if she is?" Sam told him. "I mean, we haven't seen her since--"

"I know, Sam," Dean cut him off, not far from annoyed, then sighed. "You think she'll actually listen to us after what happened with Dad?"

"It's worth a shot," Bobby stepped back in. "I'd reckon if anyone can knock some sense into her it'd be you idjits."

Juniper watched as the brothers looked at each other, Dean not entirely convinced by Bobby's words, while Sam held a more distressed expression on his face. Despite not knowing who Dani was, if the girl was a friend of Bobby and the Winchesters, then maybe going out to find her would be a good idea.

After another moment of silence, Dean let out a sigh in defeat, looking up at Bobby. "Where do we need to go?"

*******

In just a couple of hours later, Juniper had a small bag packed and stowed away in the back of Dean's Impala long enough to head for Henderson, Minnesota with the Winchesters to find Dani and bring her back to Bobby's. The older hunter was hesitant to have Juniper tag along, but Dean and Sam insisted that she get a glimpse at what supernatural hunting was all about, while gaining some experience. The trip itself was three hours, which she was just about dreading, yet it gave her some time to prepare herself for whatever they would find. With this being her first supernatural case, a part of her was nervous, but still somewhat excited to see what was in store for tonight.

When they were only a few miles away from the town, Juniper thought it was time to ask more about who they were looking for.

"So what can you tell me about this Dani person?" she asked from the backseat of the car.

"Dani Ward is a hunter like us," Sam answered.

"She also knew our dad, working on some cases with him for a while," Dean added. "Then she left and came back when Sammy and I started hunting together again."

"What happened?" she asked. "I don't mean to be nosy, but--"

"No, it's okay," Sam assured her. "Something happened a few months ago with a job and she disappeared. We haven't seen or heard from her since that night."

"Now she's out and about doing friggin' witchcraft shit," Dean stated. "She swore she wasn't practicing any of it when she first told us about it."

"And you believed her, I assume," Juniper said.

"Dani was very secretive about her witch background," Dean explained. "She didn't want any targets on her back because of it, and when we all found out about it..." He trailed off, and Juniper saw the way his hands gripped tighter around the steering wheel.

"But our dad still trusted her after that," Sam replied. "And if he could trust her, then that said a lot about who she was."

"Do you really think we'll find her in Henderson?"

Sam sighed. "I hope so. Something's not right."

"Can you tell me what she looks like?" she inquired, getting more and more curious.

"Sam, check the compartment," Dean said to him.

Sam obliged, opening the compartment door in front of him and scrambling through what looked like small pieces of paper from Juniper's view. He looked through them quickly before handing one to Juniper.

"What's this?" she asked.

For a moment, Sam hesitated. "Fake IDs. You know, for jobs."

Juniper shook her head and playfully rolled her eyes. "Of course." She looked down at the ID, her smile fading when she took a good look at the picture of the girl. With her blonde hair and fair complex, she instantly remembered seeing that face before.

"Wait, I've seen this girl," Juniper said. "We're looking for Danielle?"

"Hold on, what?" Dean spoke up, confused. "When did you meet her?"

"At the coffee shop the night Eric was murdered," she said, and when she realized how easy it was to say that out loud, she paused for a moment before she lost composure, then continued. "She saw me by myself, so we sat together for a while and just talked."

"About what?" Dean pressed on.

"Me and my complicated life," she answered. "It was nothing supernatural-related, if that's what you were wondering."

"But why would she be in Baltimore?" Sam spoke up. "And if she was there at the same time we were--"

"It's definitely weird," Dean cut him off, then his eyes went a little wide. "Wait, you called her Danielle."

"Yeah, that's how she introduced herself," Juniper told him.

"No one has ever called her by that name," Dean informed her. "Well, Ellen probably has if she was mad at her for something..."

"Even then that didn't happen often," Sam pointed out. "She was always known as Dani. So why introduce herself as Danielle?"

Dean stayed quiet for a moment, becoming more in deep thought as he kept driving. "I might know why."

"Well, care to share it with us?" Juniper asked. "Because God knows I need some time to prepare for whatever we're about to get into."

"Not yet," he said. "I just...let me think about it for a minute..."

Sam snorted in response. "Dude, with what brain?"

"Shut up, Sammy," the older brother retorted. He briefly paused before going on. "This sounds like demonic possession."

Another demon? Juniper thought.

"You're not serious," Sam said.

"Think about it. Do you remember the last time we saw her? The night she and Dad went to do that trade?"

Sam took a second to think about it, then it seemed as if a lightbulb had gone off in his head. "She wasn't with Dad when we found him."

"Exactly, and if she's not into witchcraft--"

"--then the demon possessing her might be?" Juniper cut back in, raising her eyebrows.

Dean smiled a little. "Now you're onto something. It's the only lead we got and probably the only one that makes the most sense." He paused, sighing. "We probably should've suspected something that night. You know, with Yellow Eyes--"

"With who?" Juniper spoke up again. This was the first time she had heard that name before.

Sam shot Dean a frowning look, to which the older brother gave him a guilty look in response.

"It's a long story," Dean quickly covered up. "Trust me, we'll tell you all about it. But right now, we gotta get Dani back."

Before they knew it, the sign that welcomed them to Henderson, Minnesota was on their right. Even though it was a small city, entering the downtown area was lively, lights going down the street from every building standing there. Some residents filled the sidewalks, while others remained inside the restaurants and other small shops that were currently open. When Dean parked the Impala next to a bar, he looked over and noticed a beige-tan Honda CR-V not too far from them. He walked towards it, his hand running along the side.

"Is it hers?" Sam asked.

Dean chuckled. "Oh, yeah. The dent I made in Colorado from that grocery cart a few months ago is right here." His smile went away when he saw Sam and Juniper giving him strange looks. "Which she still thinks was from a hit-and-run, and I know how she feels about her Honda, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell her it was actually me who did it."

Sam and Juniper exchanged raised eyebrows when Dean came back their way. Stepping onto the sidewalk, they first looked through the window of the bar, their eyes going directly to the back as they heard cheering from customers. After looking around for Danielle's familiar face, there was no sign of her inside.

"Come on, let's keep looking," Sam said.

So the three walked up and down the pavement, having no luck with finding Danielle anywhere. None of them wanted to lose any hope, but they couldn't help but think the trip here was a complete waste if she decided to move onto the next city while they weren't around to spot her.

"Bobby said a lot of the locals here seemed friendly with her," Juniper pointed out. "Maybe we could ask them if they've seen her around tonight?" She wasn't sure what else they could do at this point.

"I doubt any of these dicks can remember their own names right about now," Dean said, the stress in his forehead and mouth as they were pressed hard together. "Her car is here, so where is she?"

"How about we drive around a bit and see if she's somewhere else?" Sam suggested.

The frustration in Dean's face was still there, but he took a deep breath to try to calm down. "Fine."

So the trio headed back towards the car, and seeing Danielle's Honda still parked there only made Dean more annoyed. Juniper hopped into her usual spot in the backseat, huffing a sigh as the boys got comfortable in their seats like before. But when everyone was settled in, Dean didn't start the engine right away.

"What's wrong?" Sam questioned.

Dean was quiet for a moment, then responded. "Her car is here."

"Yeah, you said that already," Sam reminded him.

"But she could still be around, right? Around long enough to--" Stopping abruptly, his hands scrambled down both sides of his seat, eventually pulling out a small brown bag that was tied up at the top.

"--to plant a hex bag," Sam finished for him, his face getting worried.

Dean opened the door and threw the bag out, having Sam and Juniper check for any more surprises by their seats. He skidded out of the parking lot and sped down the street, stationing the Impala at a nearby empty gas station just within eyesight of the bar.

"How long are we gonna wait here?" Juniper asked.

"However long it takes for Dani to show her ass," Dean replied.

"Well, you have fun with that. I need to use the bathroom." Juniper quickly got out of the Impala and headed around the back of the small building. She tried opening the door to the bathroom, only to find it locked. Groaning, she stepped back outside, leaning against the wall and crossing her arms as she let out a sigh, waiting for the bathroom to be free again. After waiting a while, she finally accepted defeat and decided to head back to the car. But as she turned to walk in that direction, she was met with someone close to her face.

"Hi, Juniper," Danielle greeted her with a slight smile, almost coming across as malice.

Juniper opened her mouth to say something, taking a second to try to relax. "Hi, Danielle," she replied, remembering that she wasn't Danielle, but a whole different person entirely.

"It's crazy to run into you here of all places," she said, laughing a little. "Such a small world, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it really is," Juniper agreed, adding a nervous chuckle at the end.

A small world. What a damn statement that was.

"So how did things go with your fiancé, what was his name...Eric, right? Yeah, that was it! Anyway, did you talk to him about eloping?"

Juniper felt her lip tremble and her heart dropping at the sound of his name. "He's...he's gone," was all she could get out with a cracked voice, the lump in her throat forming.

Danielle's smile faded. "You mean, he's dead?" She clicked her tongue, shaking her head. "Aw, that's too bad. I was really hoping it'd all work out for you two."

Juniper nodded her head. "Me, too." For all she knew, the girl in front of her was the one who had killed him.

"You know what, I actually have a confession to make," she stated. "I may have told a little fib when we first met." She paused and saw the scared expression in Juniper's face. "And seeing you right now, it looks as if you already know what I'm referring to."

When Danielle's eyes turned black, Juniper quickly took a step back, almost tripping over her own feet.

All of a sudden, a splash of water came from behind Danielle, followed by steam rising from her skin as she let out a cry of pain. Behind her were the Winchesters, with Dean holding a silver bottle in his hand and Sam carrying a journal.

"Stand back, Juniper!" Dean shouted, grabbing ahold of Danielle from behind. "Start the exorcism, Sam!"

"But Juniper and I were having a lovely conversation!" Danielle protested before Sam could intervene, struggling to get out of Dean's grasp. "I was just about to tell her about how I saw her fiancé the night before he was killed."

Juniper's eyes went wide. "You what?"

"Oh, now you're intrigued, huh? Yeah, I saw him at the bar with his friends that night, having a good ol' time without you there."

"Don't listen to her!" Dean said. "Sam!"

"Oh, but I haven't even gotten to the good part yet," Danielle kept going. "He and I had a long conversation about you, actually, and he sure said a lot of things."

Juniper shook her head, being at the verge of tears. "No. No, stop it. You're lying."

"Oh, am I? Why don't we ask--" Danielle let out a fake gasp. "Wait, we can't really do that now, can we? Oops." The evil laugh that escaped her lips sent chills down Juniper's spine. "But you know what's not a lie? I actually know more about what happened to your lover that night."

"Sam, hurry up!" Dean yelled.

"Wait!" Juniper shouted, putting up her hands for Sam to stop his incantation, but she didn't think he heard her and was proceeding with it, anyway. "Tell me what you know about Eric's murder."

"Just that I was too late to finish him off," Danielle explained. "From the looks of it, the demon before me really made him suffer."

Before Juniper could interrogate the demon more, Danielle's head began to thrust back and forth, a growl coming out of her mouth. She could hear Sam's voice as he kept his head down, reading from the journal. Dean grunted as he did his best to not let Danielle break free from his clutch while the exorcism was still happening. All Juniper could do was watch in horror as Dean finally released Danielle as she dropped to her knees, where a black smoke emerged from her mouth and disappeared into the night sky. Danielle, panting, collapsed to the ground.

"Dani!" Sam yelled, rushing towards her, along with Dean.

"Hey, Dani, you okay?" Dean asked, getting on the ground with her, propping her up against the wall.

When Danielle's breathing went back to a normal pace, she glanced at her surroundings for a moment, then widened her eyes when she came face to face with Dean. "Dean?"

"The one and only," he chuckled.

Her response was shoving him off of her. "Don't touch me."

"That's a funny way of thanking Sam and I for saving your ass," he retorted. "And also Juniper over there for...well, distracting you until we got here."

Danielle turned her head to see the girl, her expression going soft, but still confused. "Hi," was all she could say.

Juniper, shaking from what she just witnessed, tried her best to see her as Dani, the hunter that the Winchesters knew and trusted, as opposed to Danielle, the demon-witch that managed to charm her way into Juniper's life. She felt stupid for being so naïve and vulnerable when they first met, already so willing to open up to a complete stranger. Looking back, if she had known that she was talking to a demon...

All of a sudden, the sound of a toilet flushing broke the silence, followed by a woman opening the door and coming out of the bathroom, stopping in her tracks when she saw the four.

"Rough night for all of us," Dean quickly said to the woman, to which she nodded her head and hurried on her way.

Yeah, Juniper thought. Rougher than anyone could ever imagine.

Juniper refused to ride in the same car with Danielle on the way back to South Dakota, and none of them could blame her for it, especially Danielle herself, who had a guilty expression on her face after seeing how terrified Juniper was after the exorcism.

The four compromised with Dean driving Danielle in her car, in which the brothers agreed that Dean should be the one to fill Danielle in on what happened during these last few months, while Sam and Juniper took the Impala. It was weird for Juniper to actually be in the front seat rather than the back, where she was okay with not having either of the boys getting the urge to eye her from the rearview mirror. Even if they did check on her every now and then, she didn't notice.

This time, she could feel Sam's short stares from the sound of his jacket rustling whenever he slightly moved, and she did her best to not turn her head to look at him.

"You okay?" he finally asked her.

Jumping in her seat a little, she decided to glance at him. "Um...I don't...I don't really know. What happened was...well, very..."

"Intense? Yeah, exorcisms usually are. You kind of get used to it once you've seen a bunch of them." Pausing, Sam sighed before he went back to talking. "Look, you know what the demon said back there about Eric wasn't true, right? Demons lie and manipulate people in order to get what they want, and that'll only get you hurt or killed if you fall into their traps."

Letting his words sink in, there was a part of Juniper that still thought of the possibility that the demon wasn't lying about Eric, that he really did talk to Danielle that night and said all that he could in his drunken state about her. She was curious as to what he said, but then again, there was no point in worrying about it now, nor did it matter. Maybe it was best to go with the other part of her that agreed with Sam. Demons caused enough trouble in her life already. She couldn't be stupid again and fall into their tricks. If she was to be a hunter, then she had to be smarter than that.

"It's my fault, isn't it? That the demon possessing Dani was in Baltimore in the first place," Juniper spoke up.

"What?" he asked, confused.

"Maybe it wasn't a coincidence that she was there when you guys showed up," she said. "I mean, you haven't seen her for months and all of a sudden I meet her and then--"

"Juniper," he stopped her. "Listen, it's not your fault. None of this makes sense, and it's frustrating for all of us, but don't think for another minute that any of this was your doing."

Reluctantly, she nodded her head in an attempt to get that reassurance into her head. "Do you think the demon will come back?"

"I don't know," he admitted. "I hope not. But we'll be ready if it does."

Juniper could tell there was more than he was letting on, but she didn't press on, for as she began to drift in and out of sleep, her anxiety was only getting worse as it took over inside her head.
