Chapter 1: Before
So this is what's happening right now OK? Hope you enjoy!
Before Mom died of cancer, we were happier. We could go to the park without her coughing. We could go to the beach without her get over-tired. Then she got diagnosed with cancer. Not just any cancer. Leukemia. The doctor said we had about 5 months with her until she was too sick to leave the hospital. She started chemotherapy, and it weakened her till she had to stay in bed or else she threw up, vomiting blood as well. Finally, she had to move to the hospital. We started having daily visits. Then one day, she started gasping for air and the bright light in her eyes, her rebellion, started to dull. The machine over her bald head, the one that had beeped with her heart for so long, started to slow. "DOCTORS!" my father yelled, "SOMEBODY! MY WIFE IS DYING!" beeeeeeep. "No." I whispered, hoping it was all a dream, "NO!" I started to sob, screaming, "Let me through! She's my mother! LET ME GO!" I broke through the hoard of doctors and nurses to look at my mother, the one who told me to stay strong, lifeless, before my eyes. My knees felt like jelly. Someone small hugged my waist, and I hugged back. I crouched and pulled John, my little brother, closer. "Please don't tell me she's dead" he whispered, "please."
"I'm sorry buddy," my voice cracked, "she is." His electric blue eyes clouded with tears. His body collapsed against mine, shuddering with sobs. "Please! Give her back! PLEASE!" See, John believes in the Greek gods, so, when things happen, like Mom for instance, he thinks it's the god Hades, god of death and riches, has taken Mom to the Underworld in his chariot. The doctors pulled us back from one of the two people in the world who really knew us. Ever since then, money's been pretty tight.
Then dad married that horrible woman. Her daughter was pretty nice, but "Ma" thought that John, her daughter Juliana, and I, were her slaves or something. John and I pleaded to Dad to divorce her, but he said lamely "She has money" and walked off. She absolutely adored us when Dad was around, but her words were harsh and beatings severe when we were alone. We went to bed stiff and sore while "Ma" said that we played really hard. Juliana was not spared. If she said, "That's not true Ma!" She would be whipped the next day in the shed. And Ma would say, "Sweetie, stop joking around!" and she would end with a soft growl, a warning, to back off.
So when we were all free, we used it to our best advantages. We stayed in the woods as long as we could. One day, I spotted something glitter in the sunshine on a gray thing. I told John and Juliana what I had seen. "Let's go check it out!" Juliana said, ecstatic. "Sure!" John and I said, enthusiastically. So we walked over.
"A secret graveyard!" Juliana squealed, "Do you think it's haunted?" We smiled, thinking we knew the answer. Suddenly, I felt a chill go up my spine. I was looking at the gravestone that had brought us to that graveyard. The glittering thing looked slightly familiar. "A locket!" I cried. I ran over and was about to pick it up when the inscription on the gravestone caught my eye. "Juliet Beistle. Beloved daughter of Lila and Nathan Beistle. 1979-1991. whoever cursed this...this beloved child, may you rest down in Hell. She was only 12." I said, "The same age that Mom and Dad were in 1991!" We all thought for a moment. "The same age as Ma as well!" Whoa, I thought, and then John said: "Do you think that they knew each other?"
"They must have. When we met each other for the first time they embraced and Dad said 'I knew you would be here. You, Ashley and your mother always came here.' It was creepy and oddly gooey." Then I looked at the locket. "Hold on. I think I've seen this before. Now I know where I saw this before. Mom had one of them!" Oh my goodness, I thought, and then said, "How is this possible?"
"I don't know!" John said bewildered, "Why should I know?" Wow, everyone's suddenly agitated, I thought. Suddenly, the locket popped open with a small, click, and the insides were revealed.
