Chapter 53
At 9:00 a.m. Mek arrived at Run's house hoping he was in time for one of Kwan's wonderful breakfasts. Mint answered the door.
"Run and Fah are asleep. Do you want to go in and wake them up?" said Mint.
"Sure, this could be fun!" said Mek.
"Be kind, Mek. I'm warning you, you must take good care of my son," Mint said. Mek smiled.
"I'll be nice." Opening the bedroom door he looked at Fah and Run sleeping. He walked over to Run's bed, leaned down, and kissed him lightly on the lips. Still asleep, Run took his hand and swatted at his lips. Mek kissed him gently again. This time Run responded by kissing Mek back. They kissed a little bit and then Mek stopped and stood up. Run lay still, his eyes shut.
"You dare to call me a whore when you kiss back anyone who kisses you in your sleep," Mek whispered.
"Not just anyone, only you. I smelled your shampoo," Run whispered back. He opened his eyes and smiled.
"That's what I like to hear," said Mek, bending down to kiss Run once more.
"Stop, Fah's here!" said Run. "What time is it? I set my alarm for 9:15 and never heard it." As if on cue, the alarm went off. Fah groaned and opened his eyes.
"Oh, hi Mek, what time is it?" asked Fah.
"9:15," came the reply from both Mek and Run. They laughed.
"Why did you come so early, I thought you said you would be here at 10?" asked Fah.
"I couldn't wait another minute to be with my handsome boyfriend."
"I wish that were true but I know you too well, Mek. You came for Kwan's breakfast; you love her cooking." Run laughed and Mek smiled at him.
"Well, I'll go eat breakfast but only so Kwan doesn't think I'm ignoring her... I'll meet you two in the kitchen," said Mek, shutting the door behind him. They heard him singing a love song to Kwan on his way to the kitchen.
"You can shower first, Fah. I'm pretty fast. Anything in there that you need is yours to use." Run liked having a brother.
"Thanks, Run. And they said brothers always fight."
"Somehow I think we'll be okay, we missed the volatile years. If we just keep our hands off each other's boyfriends we should be fine." Run smiled.
Thirty minutes later Run and Fah were eating breakfast in the kitchen while Mek followed Kwan around begging for a little more. Unable to take his puppy dog eyes any longer she said, "Everyone else has eaten, I guess I can give you a little bit extra." She fixed him a small plate and he joined the brothers at the table.
A few minutes later Fah excused himself to brush his teeth. Soon after, Run did the same and then they all left for Khun Korn's office.
Mek found a parking space and turned to Fah. "Are you ready to meet your coworkers again?"
"I think so. They do know I won't remember them, right?" Fah blinked rapidly a few times and bit his lip as he looked at the building.
"Ohm is overly dramatic and even knowing you have amnesia, he will still be insulted if you can't remember him because he's unable to accept not being everyone's favorite. Win is fun as well but very patient and tolerant. They both love my uncle."
The three men walked into the office. At first, no one noticed them. Win and Ohm were gathered around Khun Korn's laptop, all of them discussing something. Mek cleared his throat.
"Mek! How is my favorite lover?" said Ohm, running over to hug him. Mek looked uncomfortable and pulled Ohm's hands off of him. "Hey, what's going on, lover?" asked Ohm.
"Ohm, you have to stop kidding around like that. My boyfriend will get upset," said Mek.
"What boyfriend? You've never dated the same man twice!" laughed Ohm.
"This boyfriend," said Run, stepping forward and grabbing Mek's hand.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was kidding around. I thought the two of you -" here Ohm went to point at Run and Fah, "were a couple but oh my God, is that you Fah?" He pushed Mek out of the way and hugged Fah tightly.
"Fah, oh sweetie, I heard what horrible things you've been through. I'm so sorry. We've missed you and we're hoping you'll come back to work soon! That is what you're here for, right?" Ohm's words came out in a torrent.
"This is the surprise I mentioned," said Khun Korn, coming forward to greet them. "Let me introduce everyone."
"Khun Korn, we're all old friends," said Ohm.
"Ohm, please remember, someone has amnesia. Even you can't make it past a brain injury," said Khun Korn laughing.
"Fah, this is Ohm." As Khun Korn spoke, Ohm curtsied, his tall 190 cm frame seemingly too large for the gesture.
"This is Win, your other coworker," he said, as Win came forward.
"Hi Fah, you don't remember me, but we were friends. I hope we can be friends again," said Win, making a wai to Fah.
"You two are a couple, right?" asked Fah.
"We were but now that I've seen that photo of you on the internet I have to ask, are you interested?" Ohm twirled around in a circle.
"Ohm, first, did you notice how hot the other guy in the photo was? He doesn't want your saggy old carcass. Second, I'm the only one who has ever been able to tolerate your melodramatic ass so shut up before you lose me." Win stared daggers at Ohm.
"Sorry, Fah. I can't wait for you to come back to work. This is the kind of fun we had all the time," said Ohm, ignoring Win.
"Run, Mek, please excuse me as I talk with Fah," said Khun Korn, guiding Fah away from the others and towards his office. Fah sat down in a chair as Khun Korn shut the door.
"Fah, does any of this seem familiar?"
"No, sorry." Fah kept looking around at the decor, the people, what everyone had on their desks, desperately trying to remember.
"I'm going to show you a case you were working on. Please take a look at it and see if the case comes back to you. Perhaps it's just people and places that you forget and the work is ingrained in your head." He handed Fah a file.
Fah took his time reading over it. Slowly different thoughts came to him. He began sharing his ideas with Khun Korn who nodded and smiled.
"Yes! You do remember what you learned and what we do. That was very good. Now I'm even happier that I've held your job here. If there is anything I can do to help you brush up, all you need to do is ask."
They discussed work, clients, Ohm and Win, and then Khun Korn asked him about the Lom situation. Immediately Fah's look of happiness left.
"Khun Korn, honestly, I have no idea who would shoot Lom. Also, something hasn't made any sense to me. If whoever did it left Lom's car but took Lom, how did no one see the vehicle the kidnappers used? Also, isn't Ton's house gated? I don't remember, but I would think a house that size, especially given his work, would have surveillance cameras everywhere. Why didn't the police or Ton see anything? Lastly, with Ton's reputation as a mafioso, who would dare abduct his son off his property? Wouldn't it have been easier to grab him when he was out shopping or in the parking garage at his condo?"
"My thoughts exactly! I'm not sure how much the police believe and I don't know if Ton has any of them on his payroll. I think his attempt to blame it on you was an emotional response. Had he thought it through, he would have made sure you didn't have an alibi for the time of the kidnapping before accusing you. However, you do have an alibi and several people can verify being with you when you were on the phone with Lom as well. Your doctor will verify you were too weak to do anything, and you were never alone. Since you can't drive until the doctor has cleared you, you can't abduct anyone by car."
"Where are they looking for Lom? Are they actually trying to find him? How much blood was at the scene? Was it a lot, was he bleeding out?" Fah had clenched his fists and his nostrils flared. He reminded himself to remain calm.
"I don't know, Fah. I'm not sure if I believe anyone was on the property. If they were, they must be part of the organization" He gave Fah a pointed look.
"Lom always told me if his father didn't kill him it would be his cousins or rivals of the family," said Fah. How many times had Lom told him that and he never took it as seriously as he should have. "Wait!" Fah said. "Oh my God, I remember that. I remember Lom telling me this so many times. Part of my memory is coming back!"
"That's wonderful! I want you to relax though. Don't tell anyone, but I hired a private detective to search for Lom."
"Does Lom own that condo or does it belong to Ton?"
"That whole building belongs to Lom. Why?"
"I want to move there. It feels like home to me. If he can escape from whoever has him he won't try to go home again. More than likely he'll try to go to the condo." Fah was excited by this idea.
"Does Ton have a key?" Khun Korn was leery of Fah living alone, especially in Lom's condo.
"No, Lom had to let him in," said Fahm he remembered that clearly. After he had heard Lom on the phone that morning he had been hyper-aware of everything to do with Ton.
"I can speak to the police, say that you were living with him before you returned home and it was were you felt safe. It's a long shot. Ton will try to oppose it and so will your family."
"Thanks for trying." Lom smiled.
"Come, let's join the others. I want to take everyone out for lunch," said Khun Korn as he opened the door and waved for the others to come over. "Lunch is my treat today, I thought we could go to one of the nearby restaurants. Does anyone have a preference?"
"Ooh, I like the Japanese place a block over!" said Ohm. Everyone agreed and they decided to walk to the restaurant.
