Chapter 47
"Why did you take me with you?" asked Fah.
"Wait, you forgot that you told him no one in the family ever loved him," said Run. Lom scowled.
"Run is right. I did say that, I also said I never loved you, that it had all been a trick. But I was angry about Bank's death and you were ruining the job Ton assigned me, which meant my punishment would be severe." Lom felt hopeless and discouraged and it showed.
"Why would you hurt innocent people, Lom? Didn't I always tell you not to hurt innocent people?" said Fah.
"Fah, you did it again, you remembered something from before the kidnapping!" Lom's face lit up. "You were always telling me not to work for Ton and not to hurt innocent people."
Joy left his voice as he continued, "I said no one loved you and afterward I took you with me. I took you because I couldn't kill you but if I left you, you might identify the kidnappers. During our time alone here, I fell in love with you all over again, and that's the truth." Lom took Fah's hand in his.
"Well, not exactly in love, right?" said Fah, pulling his hand away.
Lom's brow crinkled as he mouthed, "What?"
"I heard you on the phone with Ton this morning, when you thought I was asleep. You said you could kill me if you had to." Fah whispered the last part.
Mek and Run stared at Lom in horror.
"Fah, I was speaking with my father. He would have taken you out of this apartment and killed you himself if I didn't say that. He believes if you don't remember anything about the judge, then you are worthless to us, you're a loose end that needs to be disposed of. I would never kill you. I didn't try to kill you that night! I shot your arm and then immediately got you a doctor and medical treatment. Can't you see I'm telling the truth?"
"Run, Mek, what do you think?" asked Fah.
Run gave Lom a disapproving glance, but said nothing. Mek spoke.
"I think Lom is telling you the truth. When you were missing, you have no idea how long and hard he searched to find you. It drove him crazy not knowing where you were. He's right, he could have killed you that night, or left and taken you somewhere to shoot you and dump your body. Instead, he brought you to his home and paid for your medical treatment. I have no idea how you feel now, but you two used to be head-over-heels in love with each other. Also, knowing what I do about Ton, I can see him demanding Lom promise he would kill you. His parents don't want the two of you to be together."
Mek stopped speaking and looked at Lom, who gave him a sign of thanks.
"Fah, I don't know Lom at all, only as the guy who kidnapped my family. I don't trust him. However, he's only done helpful things for you since he took you from the scene of the kidnapping. When you left the message about killing yourself, we later found out Lom saved you again and was making sure you received good medical care. If he wanted you dead, he would have let the overdose succeed," said Run.
"What message?" asked Fah.
Mek played the message Fah had left on his phone. Lom and Fah listened intently as they had never heard it. Lom stared down at his hands but Run spied tears escaping from the corners of his eyes. Now he was sure Lom was in love with his brother which eased his worries.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry Fah. I had no idea how afraid you were of me. Please forgive me." Lom went to the bathroom and shut the door. Fah looked at the other two men.
"Do you think he's acting?" asked Fah.
"No!" replied Mek and Run simultaneously.
"I think you two love each other and have found yourselves in the most messed up situations. I think he needs to leave the family business and the two of you need to start over somewhere once your memories are back. Luckily, they've already started coming back." Mek smiled at Fah. Fah tried smiling back but it came out as a grimace.
"I know he explained the reason why he said he could kill me on the phone, but I don't fully trust him," whispered Fah.
"I wouldn't trust him either," said Run. He didn't want to lose his brother to a man he'd only met once before, at the other end of a gun.
"Run, it's hard for you to understand. If you knew these two a year ago, you would have seen their inability to separate from each other, the jealousy they both felt when one gave attention to someone else; they were so in love."
"Would that someone else happen to have been you?" asked Run, laughing.
"Wait a minute - you! You had sex with Lom!" Fah shouted, gleeful that another memory had returned.
"What?" asked Run. Mek blushed bright red and appeared uncomfortable.
"I can't remember where I was but I opened a door and Lom was having sex with you. Why would Lom be with you if he loved me? Why was I there watching? Are you all lying to me?" Fah wasn't sure if he should trust anyone anymore.
"Yeah, Mek, please explain this to us?" asked Run. He moved to sit next to Fah, swallowed hard, and looked back at Mek.
"It was that first night when we all met." Mek couldn't stop fidgeting and cleared his throat several times before speaking. No matter how he tried to explain it, it was going to sound bad. He didn't want to lose Run nor did he want to lie to Fah.
"Oh, this is already starting to impress me," Run said through clenched teeth.
"The night we met at the bar, I joined you and Lom at your table," said Mek.
"Even better, you saw two men together and decided to join them? You don't hit on single men?" Run shook his head in disbelief.
"You said you were trying to figure out if you were gay. You'd been to a brothel that night and discovered you weren't attracted to women. Also, you were a virgin who had never been kissed."
"Let me guess, Mek, you offered to kiss him?" Run was now wondering why he ever agreed to date such a whorehound. Mutual friends had shared wild tales about Mek but he'd always been too young to go to the same parties or clubs. "Am I dating the town bike?" asked Run.
"Fuck you, Run!" Mek laughed despite feeling insulted.
"What do you mean, 'the town bike'?" Fah asked.
"It's an expression, Fah. You call someone the town bike because everybody has ridden it," said Run.
Fah laughed so hard he had to cover his mouth. He didn't want to insult Mek but it was too funny. He'd had so little to laugh at lately.
Lom came out of the bathroom. His eyes were slightly puffy but other than that it was hard to tell he'd been crying.
"What are you all laughing at?" asked Lom.
"Mek," said Run.
"Run called Mek the town bike," said Fah, still laughing. Lom laughed out loud.
"Not you too?" asked Mek.
"Hey, I had a ride!" said Lom.
This made everyone except Mek burst out laughing. Run wasn't upset anymore, he was having too much fun.
"Go to hell, Lom! I came here to visit you and this is how I'm treated!" Mek feigned exasperation.
"I'm sorry, Mek, I shouldn't have said that," said Lom.
"It was the best ride of your life too, wasn't it!" said Mek, still laughing.
"Until it got a flat tire!" Lom couldn't help himself.
"I did not have a flat tire, thank you very much!"
"Wait, wait, wait, where were you when Fah was watching you guys have sex?" asked Run.
"At my place," said Mek.
"Damn, Mek, I knew you liked to brag about how good you are, but really, bringing home an audience?" teased Run. They laughed some more until Lom realized Fah was no longer laughing along with everyone.
"The truth is, I had no clue at that time that Fah was in love with me. I didn't even know he liked me. At the bar, he kissed Mek. Or rather, he let Mek kiss him, but once they started kissing, they started getting into it way too much, so I had to stop them," said Lom.
"So you stopped it by kissing Mek?" asked Fah.
"I'd already kissed Mek. I said I was getting jealous. I told you both to stop."
"Did we?" asked Fah.
"We did. Then you grabbed Lom and kissed him, and he liked it!" teased Mek.
"If Fah was kissing Lom, then how did you and Mek end up having sex?" Run was beyond confused at this point.
"Look, I'll admit, this night was not a normal night for any of us. Fah got so drunk he couldn't walk. We put him on my couch to sleep. He woke up and got an eyeful, that's the story," said Mek.
"Did I just stand there and watch? Please don't tell me I joined in," said Fah. He was trying to remember but only brief flashes came and none of it made sense. "Why do I keep seeing the 7-11™ after seeing you and Lom having sex?"
"You were so upset you ran to the 7-11™ and got a ride home with strangers," said Lom. "Please, that's the whole story. Mek and I are friends, nothing more. It was a strange night." Lom wanted to end the discussion.
"One last question, please," said Fah.
"Fine, one question, and it better be easy." Lom looked nervously at Fah.
"Why were you mad at me for having sex with Mek? Or did that happen another night?" asked Fah.
"Damn, Mek, you had sex with my brother and then asked to date me?" said Run.
"Fah and I never had sex. He said that to piss Lom off because he was mad," said Mek.
"He's telling the truth, Run. Fah admitted it to me later," said Lom.
"Do you forgive me?" asked Mek, holding Run's hand.
"What's to forgive? This happened before we were together. Of course, we're okay," said Run. "I'm sorry I teased you, but it was funny."
"What's the status of you two now?" asked Mek, regarding Fah and Lom.
"You'll have to ask Fah for his feelings because he's been through so much and doesn't remember me. I know I still love him," said Lom, looking at Fah but not moving any closer. Since leaving the bathroom he'd stood at a distance off to the side. After he finished speaking everyone turned to face Fah.
"I have no idea. One minute I think I love him, sometimes I want to have sex, other times I'm terrified of him." He realized he was the one causing the pain he saw flit across Lom's face at that moment. "Lom, I wish I could say things that would make you happy, I wish I could remember, but I can't. I'm being honest. Everything I learned today, I haven't had time to process it all. For you three, these are old memories, but it's all new information to me. I'll probably have questions later."
"You can ask me, I'll tell you the truth," said Lom in a monotone. Run and Mek exchanged glances.
"Isn't it great we can all get together and laugh though," said Mek.
"I'm glad I can spend time with my brother and also get to know you, Lom," said Run.
"It was fun having company today. Lom, can they come over again?" asked Fah.
"Sure, just give me a call so I can clean up," said Lom. He added, "Please, Run, don't tell your father where we are."
"I won't, but I will remind you my parents and little brother miss him and are very worried about him. If you'd let him come to the house to say hello, or at least meet us at a coffee shop somewhere, it would help them relax."
"Why don't you take a picture with Fah and Mek? Give me your phone and I'll take it. You can show them he's fine. Fah can also call you. I'll buy him a cellphone tomorrow because he didn't have one on him when I brought him here."
"His phone is at my house, it had been charging when we were abducted. His car is there too."
"I have a car? Do I remember how to drive?" asked Fah.
"Maybe we should find out if you remember how to drive another day," said Mek. "We better get going, we have actual errands to run."
"Say hi to your friend. He must be wondering where you are now," said Lom.
"Yeah, I'll have some explaining to do. I'll blame it on Run and say we had sex in the car because he couldn't handle being alone with me," said Mek.
"Thanks," laughed Run. Lom and Fah said goodbye and put them in the elevator.
