Chapter 46
"What we already told you," said Mek, as he cocked his head to the side and pursed his lips. "Why would we lie?"
Lom glanced from his visitors to Fah and back again. He clenched his jaw tight but did not reply.
"Hi, Fah," said Mek.
"Hi, Mek."
"You remembered me!" Mek smiled.
"I remembered you from the other day, by the coffee vendor," said Fah.
"Oh, right. Still, you remembered me, so I'm flattered," he said. "Fah, this is my boyfriend, Run. Run, this is my friend, Fah."
Lom's glanced at Mek in surprise but remained silent.
"Hi Fah, it's nice to meet you," said Run.
"Hi," said Fah. "You seem familiar, did we know each other before?"
"Yes, we met briefly. You came to my house and spent the night once." Run was afraid of giving Fah too much information for his brain to process.
"How did I know you? Did we work together, did we date, did we go to school together?" Fah kept staring at Run, trying to understand why he felt a bond.
Run regarded Lom. "Is it okay if I tell him?" Lom nodded his head yes.
"Fah, I'm your half-brother. We met right before your accident."
"My half-brother? I have a half-brother?" He smiled and continued staring at Run.
"Actually, you have two half-brothers. We have a little brother, Tin, who is ten years old," said Run.
"Do I have any half-sisters?" Fah was happy to learn he had a family.
"No, sorry, just me and Tin." Run gave him an apologetic smile.
"Oh, please don't be sorry. It's great to hear I have a family. I thought I was alone in the world."
"You were never alone in the world. Before you discovered Run, you always had me," said Lom.
"You said no one in your family loved me and that I was stupid to have ever believed that you loved me," said Fah.
Run and Lom gasped.
"What? What's going on? Why are you two surprised?" asked Mek.
"Lom said that to him during the incident," said Run. "Before his overdose."
"Really?" asked Fah. "I remembered something before my...overdose? I can't believe it! Does this mean my memory is coming back?"
For a few moments, he was incredibly happy. Then he remembered the phone call he'd overheard; Lom was willing to kill him. Also, he'd been aware of Lom's discomfort ever since Mek's and Run's arrival. He wasn't sure why Lom was acting this way, but he didn't want Mek or Run to leave.
"By the way, what incident? You mean the reason you shot me? What happened? Will you tell me?"
Fah hoped if he asked in front of others Lom wouldn't dodge the question. He watched as the three men glanced at each other with worried expressions.
"Will anyone tell me what happened?" demanded Fah. "Fuck all of you! I'm a grown man, not a child. Why do the three of you think you can decide what I should know about my own life?"
"Fah, what happened was..." Run began but Lom cut him off immediately.
"No, not you, you'll tell him a biased version!" yelled Lom.
"Fah, I can tell you what happened if you'd like, but I'm the only one of the four of us who wasn't there. I can tell you what I know, and they can correct me," said Mek. He looked around for approval; the others nodded in agreement.
Inside, Lom's heart was breaking. He had always known when Fah's memories returned he'd have an uphill battle trying to keep him but he'd hoped he would have had more of a chance to make Fah fall back in love with him before the truth came out.
"Mek, please tell me," said Fah, reaching out to hold Mek's hand. Mek nodded and cleared his throat.
"You grew up with Lom as his adopted brother, in Ton's house. Ton is the head of a mafia family whose businesses include smuggling arms, gambling, underground fighting rings, and human trafficking. When you were in college (after you and Lom had been separated for a few years by school and work) Lom visited you. At this time, you had a girlfriend you'd been dating for several years. While he was visiting you, Lom revealed to you that he was gay, and then he went back home."
Mek paused, but every motioned for him to continue.
"After he left, you realized you were in love with him, and the following weekend Lom came back to visit. The two of you went to a gay bar, which is where I kissed you. It was your first kiss."
"Here we go again, Mek bragging about being your first kiss," said Run. Mek smiled and blew a kiss to Run. The vein in Lom's neck throbbed.
Mek continued. "After that, you and Lom realized that you were in love with each other and had sex."
At this point, Fah's face flushed a deep crimson while Lom's ears turned red as well. Neither made eye contact with the other.
"Unfortunately, your happiness ended abruptly because your girlfriend came to check on you and caught the two of you in bed. She snapped a photo while you were...in the middle of things...and sent it to Ton. He called the two of you back to the house. Lom's mother said you were never welcome in the house again and were no longer part of the family. Ton stopped paying your school tuition and kicked you out of the condo. You moved away and told no one were you went. You disappeared for a year. I ran into you at a party at Win's and Ohm's house. They are your coworkers and friends of mine. It turned out that you were working at my uncle's law firm."
Lom turned to stare at Mek, his eyes bulging. Why had Mek never told him? What else had Mek been keeping from him? Had Mek known where Fah was during those months when he had repeatedly called, heartbroken and crying, searching for Fah?
"My uncle, Khun Korn, helped you finish school and rewarded everyone with tickets to a big gala. There, I introduced you to my friend, Run. You two hit it off and you went to their house for dinner. Run, can you tell this part." Mek gently pulled his hand out of Fah's grasp.
"At my house, my little brother, Tin, and I showed you around. When we were in my father's study you saw a photo in my dad's desk drawer and it freaked you out. When my dad came home the two of you shut the door and stayed in the study for a while." Run paused to let Fah have time to let things sink in. When Fah gave him a signal, Run continued.
"After that, my father told us he was also your father. Your mother, Mookda, was pregnant but Dad's family disapproved of her. Dad didn't have contact with her again until the day they took the photo. Shortly after that, you and your mom disappeared. He was never able to find either of you, although he searched. You came to our house that day, recognized the photo, and spoke to my dad. You decided to spend the night so you and I could keep talking. After dinner, we went to my room and made a list of things we wanted to do as brothers and then we fell asleep." Run stopped here. "Who is going to tell this part? Mek? Lom?"
"I will," said a Lom. He swallowed hard and glanced around at everyone, his gaze resting on Fah. He decided it was better to tell it than let someone else add bias to the narrative.
"Khun Adi, the judge, your father, was very vocal against Ton. He was the only one preventing Ton's arms business from continuing. My best friend, Bank, was also my work partner. Ton used to have us collect loan payments. One afternoon he called us in and ordered us to persuade the judge to sign documents regarding policies that were preventing his business from continuing. Everyone else was already on Ton's payroll."
Pausing, he took a deep breath before continuing. "I had no idea where you were, or that the judge was your father. Mek, who I assumed had been honest with me, told me he had no idea where you were either." Turning to face Mek, he glared at him.
"Honestly, Lom, I found out right before the...incident," said Mek.
"Anyway, Bank put together a team and they drugged and kidnapped the judge's whole family and took them to a secluded location where Bank and I would deal with the judge. The team held the family downstairs." Lom stopped here.
Turning to face the others, he made a wai at them. "Sorry Run, sorry Fah." He continued with the story.
"The judge wasn't cooperating so we brought him downstairs to see his family and threatened to shoot each family member if he wouldn't do as we asked. What I was unaware of was that the man I loved was one of the kidnapped family members. You never forgot the training Ton put us through. You grabbed a gun, and shot my best friend in the head, killing him in front of me. His wife was eight months pregnant and earlier that day we had been planning their baby's blessing at the temple. I lost it and shot you in the arm. I was furious but I didn't want to kill you. Everything began to fall apart and you killed two more of my father's men. The judge signed the papers and I let the family go but... I took you with me."
