Chapter 27
Bank and Lom had 'volunteered' a car they'd found parked on the road. They stole an expensive car because Lom believed poor people wouldn't have a way to their jobs, but someone who could afford a luxury car would have enough money for a taxi. He realized he made this choice due to Fah's influence.
Bank's burner phone rang. "Hey."
"We've been outside the house for a while. There's a new car in the driveway and an extra person inside and they only now sat down to eat. What do you want us to do?" asked Worawut.
"We're not rescheduling; we've done too much planning. Grab the extra person as well. Call us when they've gone to bed." Bank shook his head. Of course, this last job couldn't go smoothly.
"Okay." Worawut hung up and told the others.
"What's going on?" asked Lom.
"The family has a guest. I told them to grab that person as well. After all, we're not harming them, just using them to influence our guest of honor."
"Sounds good. It figures they never have guests over or eat dinner this late but the one night we make plans," said Lom. "Well, let's head over and make sure everything is ready." Bank drove to the location and they went inside and re-checked the room where the family would be held. They added another chair and then went upstairs to where they'd entertain their guest.
Tao decided to take a nap while the others staked out the house. Since he would have to sneak in first, making it past the alarms, he wanted to be at his best.
The others watched the house and spent most of the time complaining about how long it took to eat one meal. Finally, they saw the silhouettes of everyone standing up. The lights in the dining area and kitchen went off. Two rooms lit up on the second floor and another on the first floor.
"Hey, we're not going to know which room the guest is in," said Worawut.
"When Tao goes in he can check it out," said Ek.
The light in the child's room on the second floor went out almost immediately. Twenty minutes later the light in the master bedroom went out as well. On the first floor, the light remained on in the older son's room.
"What the fuck is that guy doing?" asked Mechai.
"Maybe the visitor is his friend and they're hanging out or watching a movie?" said Art. The van was becoming increasingly hot. They had the windows open but the humidity combined with so many people crammed into a small area was making it miserable. At last, the light went out downstairs.
"Wake up Tao!" said Kiat.
Ek and Art took turns trying to wake up Tao, who kept saying "Five more minutes." Unable to take it anymore, Kiat poured a glass of water on Tao.
"What the fuck!" Tao said as he jumped up.
"Hey, we need you in the house now. Find out what room the visitor is staying in. We think he might be on the first floor with the older son," said Worawut.
"I doubt he's in the master bedroom. If he is, we don't need to kidnap anybody, just take some photos!" laughed Art.
"Art, shut up," said Kiat, getting out of the van to prepare the gas. Tao slid out of the van, pushing Kiat to the side. Crouching down he made his way towards the house, running from one bush to another until he was at the gate. In the dark, they could discern his small form climb the gate, and disappear over the side. For those waiting at the van, time slowed down.
Tao slid over the fence and made his way to the back of the house. Looking into the first-floor bedroom he could see a person on each of the twin beds. That answered one question. He made his way to the back door. The window to the side of it had not been secure on his first visit. Trying it again, he found it still was not shut and he was able to slide it up and make his way inside.
Keeping his body low and close to the wall he made his way to the alarm only to discover it hadn't been turned on. That was helpful, he thought. The air conditioning was on so the windows were already down.
For the gas to work efficiently he needed to lock them in case someone woke up. The added time to undo the lock would be enough time to knock the person out before getting the window open. Once finished, he exited through the back door. He unlocked the gate from inside and made his way back to the van.
As soon as they spied Tao returning, Kiat and Ek took off with the gas for their part. They entered through the open gate and went to the back of the house where they could not be seen. They connected the gas and turned it on. Ek texted Worawut:
We've started breathing exercises.
Worawut began the timer. Now it was just a waiting game. While Kiat and Ek took care of the gas, Tao, Art, Mechai, and Worawut pulled down the mattress that had been secured in an upright position. They readied the ropes to tie everyone's hands.
"Worawut, do we have extra rope for the guest?" asked Art.
"Yes, I brought a lot of extra rope in case anything went wrong. It's behind the driver's seat." Art took a knife and cut another length of rope for the extra person. He grabbed another strip of cloth to blindfold him as well.
"Okay, get in the van and shut the doors," commanded Worawut. Tao, Mechai, and Art jumped in. They drove the van through the gates and up to the front door. Kiat and Ek came around the corner and met up with the rest of them. Art handed everyone gas masks and earpieces with microphones. Worawut began reminding everyone of their tasks.
"Tao, grab the 10-year-old, on the second floor. Kiat, Mechai, and Ek, you take the older son and the extra person. You'll need to make two trips because it'll probably take two of you to carry each one out."
Tao left to complete his task. Worawut turned to the others.
"Remember to put them next to each other as close as you can. I'll be binding their wrists and blindfolding them. After you finish with the first floor, you guys join Art and Tao and grab the judge and his wife. Bring the judge last. We can put him in a seat up front if we have to. He gets dropped off first. Communicate with each other but not unnecessarily. If anyone starts to wake up, tell us immediately!"
The crew took off. Soon Tao emerged with Tin. He put him down and went back inside. Worawut tied Tin's hands and blindfolded him. It took nineteen minutes to get everyone into the van and bound. Once the judge was in, they shut the front door of the house, got into the van, and took off. They'd left Mechai behind to wipe down the house so no fingerprints would be found and to close the gate.
Worawut told Art to contact Bank and let him know they had arrived. Within minutes Lom and Bank were there to take the judge to his location. They parked the van and the crew got out and moved the rest of the family to their holding room. They put each family member on a chair, their wrists bound behind the chair, and their feet bound as well. They left the blindfolds on. Once everyone was in place, Worawut called Bank.
"Everything is ready, number one." They had all been assigned numbers so if any of the captives escaped they would not have names to give to the police.
"Great. We're all set here. Once he wakes up we'll give him two chances to agree. If not, we'll bring him to the room where you are so he can see his loved ones in jeopardy. Good job so far, number three."
Thirty minutes later the whole family awoke from their drug-induced sleep. Tin was groggy and having trouble concentrating, but no one was sick or harmed by the gas. Run and Fah were sitting close enough that their thighs touched as room for a fifth abductee was not in the plan.
Fah whispered, "Run, is that you?"
"Yeah, Fah? Do you know what's going on?"
"No, I have no idea. Is anyone else with us?"
"I'm here," said Mint.
"Me too," said Tin. "Mama, where are you? What's going on?"
"I don't know, baby, but I'm right here. I'm not going to leave you." Mint did her best to keep her tone upbeat and confident for her small son.
Worawut silenced his crew to let the family speak when they first woke up. He believed one never knew when someone would give away information that might come in handy later on. They sat on chairs at the front of the room watching and listening to their victims speak.
"Who's here with us?" asked Fah. "What do you want? Why did you kidnap us?"
"You, sir, happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. That's the reason you are our guest right now. The rest of the family is here because Adisorn is causing problems for our boss. He's been warned but he refused to listen, so here we are."
"So this is about crime?" asked Run.
"Not crime, business," came the reply.
While this was going on, the training Fah received throughout the years began kicking in. He listened to breathing, footsteps, and movements. He knew there were at least three people in the room with them. He realized Khun Adi had never spoken which meant he most likely was in another room. That meant more people, at least two, if not more, were working with their captors in this room.
"Where did you take Khun Adi?" asked Fah.
"Not that it's any of your business, but Adisorn is a guest in another room here. Don't worry, if he doesn't agree to cooperate, he'll be brought here to discover what we do to his loved ones," came the reply from the front of the room. This voice was different from the first two replies.
"What kind of business are you talking about? Arms smuggling? Human trafficking? Drugs? It has to be one of those because if Khun Adi is affecting your business those are the things he has been speaking out against," said Fah. He wanted them angry enough to give something away.
"What our business is, it is of no concern to you. All we need is for Adisorn to play along like everyone else."
"What you're saying then is that he didn't accept your bribes and now you're stuck," said Fah.
"Hey, for someone who isn't part of the family you sure like to poke your nose into their business. Are you willing to die for them, I wonder?" Another speaker. So, at least four people were in the room with them.
"Let me guess, there are about four or five of you in this room with us, right now," said Fah. "That means that Khun Adi is in another room with at least two more people. A crew this size means that you're part of a mafia family and this job was given to you by a Chao pho."
"Kid, you've been watching too many movies. There's no mafia family here. We are concerned businessmen, trying to get obstacles to our business removed. That's it." Still another speaker. This one sounded more experienced. Five people so far.
"Why can't we remove our blindfolds? Whether you are all businessmen or mafia we won't know who you are. These blindfolds are tight and they're making us hotter. It's not as if we can do anything, you have our feet and hands bound."
Fah kept pushing. For the first time, he heard their captors whispering with each other. Judging by the echos, the room they were in wasn't that big. Their captors were about ten feet away. Suddenly a phone rang. A door opened letting in some cooler air. They could hear someone speaking on the phone although not what was being said.
