Chapter 23
Selene's pov
I bit my bottom lip to hold in my cries. The electricity coursed through my body. It stopped momentarily for me to catch my breath.
I was chained down with lots of wires and things connected to my body. The wires were hooked up to a computer where two men and a woman stood, examining the screen. They were constantly writing things down and muttering to each other.
"This doesn't make any sense," one man said loud enough for me to hear. "The data we're getting on you is odd."
"You have a strong power emanating from your body," the woman said, "yet we can't find the source."
I struggled to speak to them, "The source... my power comes from my very soul."
"That's ridiculous!" one of the men yelled. "Utter nonsense!"
I couldn't contain my chuckles. "What fools you are. Your simple scientific minds could never comprehend the power I hold. You are not in tune to the otherworld."
"Crank up the power," the woman commanded.
One of the men turned a knob that seemed to increase the energy surge on my body. The pain was unbearable and I couldn't hold in my screams anymore.
I don't know how much more of this I can take. I'll be dead by the time they're done with me. These pathetic people don't understand a thing and they never will.
I just hope they don't hurt my family. They stripped me of my jewelry along with my dagger and mask. Now I have no idea where they are. If I don't make it out of this, then I hope that Naomi will at least save my family.
Tears of pain and fear were now flowing down my face. I'm the only one who can free my family's souls. If I die, then they'll be trapped forever. Please, make this agony stop.
Naomi's pov
"This is it, I can feel it," I said, narrowing my eyes.
The building before us looked very similar to the lab from before. This one was a little smaller though and hidden in an odd part of the city. It was built within a small wooded area inside the large local park.
"They must be idiots to build a place like this in a park," Jeff stated while stuffing his hands into his hoodie pockets.
"Or very clever," Jack added.
"Doesn't matter," I interrupted, "they're all as good as dead. That's the price they must pay for what they've done."
Jack and Jeff nodded in agreement. We circled around the building, looking for the best way to sneak in. There was one front entrance and one back entrance. No windows, but I did spot a small vent.
I smirked. "I think I've got a plan. Listen up..."
I explained my idea to them in detail. They both agreed that it was a good plan. After all, we have no idea what could be waiting for us in there.
"Alright, Saber, start filling that vent with smog," I ordered.
I took the cover off the vent. Saber stuck his bony snout into the opening. I could hear the low hiss that meant he was doing what I had ordered.
"Latte, Bella, patrol the back doors while Fang and Edward patrol the front. Kill any who try to escape."
At my command, the creatures all went to they're respective places. I turned to Jeff and Jack with a grin.
"Now we can head in. Take down everyone in the way."
The three of us went inside, immediately seeing a haze in the air around us. We sprinted down several long halls, slicing up a couple of scientists in our path. We killed them so quickly that they didn't even have a chance to scream.
We began peeking into the rooms we came too. The first one we went in had a crazy man who seemed to be laughing to himself. Whatever experiments they've done on him did not turn out well. Upon seeing us, the guy instantly charged toward us still laughing like a maniac.
Jeff jumped in front of us and stabbed the guy in the face, instantly killing him. "Well this isn't the room," he said in an annoyed tone.
We quickly began searching other rooms, the smog slowly getting thicker and thicker as we killed off everyone we came to. We began using stealth as our main tactic, letting the dark smoke obscure us.
We eventually heard screams, Selene's screams. We rushed to the source. We cracked open the door of the room and peeked inside. Selene was there, sitting on the floor and being electrocuted while three scientists watched.
Like many of the experimental rooms, there were no vents, so those three were oblivious to everything outside of the room. They simply continued on with what they were doing.
Selene's cries of pain rang in my ears. I was about to rush in and slaughter those people when Jack placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Leave them to me," he whispered. "You two go on ahead. Find the crystals."
I was about to protest but stopped myself when I felt his fingers dig into my shoulder slightly. He was determined to be the one to save her. Well, he is her soul mate.
"Alright," I finally whispered back, "we'll meet you back outside. Now go rescue your soul mate."
Jack's pov
I listened to Naomi and Jeff leave me. I glanced back to see their figures disappearing in the smoke. I kept my attention on the three people at the computer.
One of them twisted a small knob that caused Selene's cries to grow louder. I was unable to contain my rage any longer. I grabbed hold of my scalpel and charged in.
I swiftly stabbed the guy controlling the knob in the back of the neck. He screamed, causing the other two to jump back in surprise. I slid my blade down the man's back before ripping it out.
Blood shot out everywhere and his spine was now exposed through the cut. He collapsed onto his stomach, blood pooling under him. I looked between the remaining two, my anger rising.
I lunged at the woman, slicing my scalpel across her neck. With the amount of pressure I had applied, I nearly beheaded her. Her spine and a thin layer of flesh at the back of her neck were the only things keeping her head from flying off.
She too collapsed where she was. I suddenly felt the last guy jumping on me from behind. He didn't have a weapon on him but he was trying to take mine. I didn't let him, and instead, grabbed his arm and threw him over my shoulder and onto his back.
I then leapt onto him, pinning him down. I repeatedly stabbed and sliced at his chest. By the time I was through taking out my anger on him, he was already dead. Small streams of blood spurted out from where I had punctured his heart and lungs.
Panting, I stood from his corpse. I hurried and twisted the knob at the computer, shutting off the power. Selene's screams finally ceased. She hung forward limply, the chains and wires keeping her in place.
I snatched the nearby key that laid next to the computer and rushed over to the girl. I ripped and tore the wires off of her and unlocked her restraints. She began to fall forward but I quickly caught her.
"Selene? Are you okay?" I asked with worry.
No answer. I called her name several times and shook her a bit. She remained silent and still. I moved her back and leaned closer, placing my ear against her chest. I can hear a faint heartbeat.
"It's alright, Selene, I've got you now," I quietly told her. "You're safe with me."
Naomi's pov
Jeff and I checked many other rooms, searching for the crystals and killing off anyone we saw. We eventually found them. All five crystals were placed on pedestals with glass casing over them.
Fortunately, there were only two people in the room. A man and a woman who both scribbled on their clipboards. I smirked and took hold of Jeff's sleeve, slowly leading him inside. We snuck up behind the two.
"These crystals are quite intriguing," the woman said.
"I know right," I answered, causing them both to jump in surprise and whirl around to face us.
Jeff and I already had our knives ready. I watched Jeff charge toward the man, stabbing his knife into the side of his face. He shoved the wailing man to the floor, pinning him as he carved a jagged grin into his face.
I stared at the woman backing away from me, a wicked grin spreading across my lips as I approached her.
"You've all been messing with a power you don't understand. You hurt my friend. Now it's time to pay you back."
In an instant, I leapt at her knocking her back into a computer desk. The computer went crashing to the floor as the woman screamed and flailed around to try and free herself.
I laughed and plunged my knife into the middle of her chest. I slowly slid it down all the way to the base of her stomach. Her cries had already ceased as I poked around at her insides as if it were a game.
Once I was done, I was covered in blood. I left the woman sprawled across the table and looked to Jeff. He had already finished with the man, who's lower jaw was nearly sliced off and had deep stab wounds in his forehead.
"Well that's taken care of," I said. "I'll grab the crystals if you get Selene's mask and dagger."
I pointed to the objects placed on the floor next to the desk. Jeff nodded and I went over to the crystals. I threw off the glass casing over each of them and took them, putting them on so I wouldn't have to carry them all.
Turning back to Jeff, he seemed to examine the glittering dagger in his hand. "I never realized how cool the blade on this thing was."
I went over and stood next to him. "It's definitely really shiny. Selene will be happy to have it back too. Now let's get outta here."
We left the room and sprinted back down the long halls toward the entrance. Exiting the building, I saw several dismembered corpses on the ground. Seems our pets took care of anyone trying to escape.
We saw Jack standing alongside Fang and Saber, holding an unconscious Selene in his arms. We rushed over to him.
"I see you've got the crystals," he stated.
"I see you've got Selene," I said. "Is she okay?"
He looked down at her. "She's alive... barely. We need to get home."
We nodded in agreement and I whistled for Latte. With a loud neigh, my steed came galloping over with Bella on her back. I took Bella and picked Edward up off the ground and set them on Fang's back.
"You two ride with Fang this time."
They both wrapped their tails and claws around his ribs and spine to hold on. I climbed on Latte, letting Jeff on behind me. Still holding Selene, Jack carefully got on Saber's back.
We rode back out of the small woods. Our beasts ran as fast as they could out of the city and back into the forest. I kept glancing over at Selene the whole way. I hope she's gonna be okay.
