Chapter 20

Naomi's pov

"This is not good," Slender said. "If the humans are learning of Selene's presence out here, they could come looking for her and stumble upon all of us."

"I'm causing you all way too much trouble," Selene said while rubbing her arm uncomfortably. "Maybe Naomi and I should leave. We'll finish the job ourselves."

"No," Jack quickly interrupted, placing a hand on her shoulder. "We're gonna help you, both of you."

Slender nodded. "I agree, you two are part of the family now."

I scoffed. "If we're part of the family then why are we still being restrained?"

"You're right," he replied. "I trust the both of you."

His tentacles came toward us and removed our shackles. My eyes widened in surprise. Just like that and we're free? His tendrils then held out our weapons.

"You may have these back as well. But if you should try to use them on anyone here, they will be taken away once more."

Selene and I silently nodded, taking our blades back and fastening them to our hips.

"I also think it would be wise to not leave the woods for awhile," Slender said. "I will have Masky and Hoodie investigate a bit in the meantime."

Again we nodded. Not like we can really protest against Slender. Even Selene shows high respect for him. Slenderman disappeared before our eyes.

After our little adventure last night, we had gotten the fourth of Selene's crystals, which she's now wearing with the rest of the jewelry. Now just one last crystal to find and my debt to Selene will be paid.

Selene suddenly turned and walked out of the room. The three of us followed her all the way out the front door.

"Uh, Selene, what are you doing?" I asked.

She stopped on the front porch and looked back at us. "I was going to go home and change out of these... things."

We followed her gaze down to the shirt and shorts she was wearing. Selene still didn't like wearing normal clothes, but I thought she looked nice in them.

Before she could take another step, Jack's hand shot out, landing on her shoulder. "Don't worry about it. I think you look... cute like this."

Selene turned completely around and tilted her head to the side. "Cute? I look... cute?"

I smiled and nodded. "You look way better now than when you wore those rags. Besides, you'll get used to them."

She sighed. "If you say so."

"So what should we do?" Jack asked. "Watch TV?"

"Pssh, no way," Jeff said. "These two are just gonna watch more documentaries."

"But they're so gory," I argued. "How could you not enjoy that?"

He shrugged. "I prefer to see the blood and gore in person."

"We could play a video game." Jack suggested.

"What's a video game?" Selene asked with confusion.

"It's hard to explain," I said. "We should just show you."

I took her by the arm and led her back inside. Jeff and Jack took us back to the living room where the two boys picked out a game for us. It turned out to be Diablo 3.

I admit, that's a pretty good choice for a beginner like Selene, especially since we can all fight together. Jeff and Jack handed us our controllers and sat down. With Selene right next to me, Jeff sat on my other side while Jack sat on Selene's other side.

Selene seemed to stare down at the controller in her hands with confusion. Jack and I both took a few minutes and instructed her on the controls before we began.

We then picked our characters. I picked a demon hunter, Jeff chose a barbarian, Jack picked a crusader, and Selene chose, of course, a witch doctor.

We started the game and I was a bit surprised at how quickly Selene was picking up on what to do. She was doing a really good job.

I smirked and nudged her with my elbow. "I thought you'd never played before."

"I haven't," she answered with a small grin. "I'm just a fast learner."

After awhile of playing the game, we stopped and had lunch. Afterwards, I found myself following Selene outside. We sat on the steps of the porch, just the two of us along with our pets.

"Hey, Selene, do think the spirits could've been right in choosing those two for us?" I asked.

The question had been popping into my mind a lot recently. I had wondered if Selene had been thinking of it too.

She shrugged her shoulders while petting Fang's snout. "Who can say, only the spirits know that for sure. Why the question? I thought you hated Jeff."

"I did. I hated him for killing my cousin, my pets, and me. I wanted revenge so badly. But ever since we were captured... I don't know what I feel anymore."

She chuckled. "That's normal. I'm as perplexed by the situation as you. I don't quite understand how I feel about all of this."

Bella and Edward climbed into my lap, letting me run my fingers through their thick fur. I stared down at them momentarily.

"I still don't know if I'd go as far as to accept Jeff as anything more than a rival," I told her.

"That's alright, we'll take things one step at a time. For now, they are helping us, making them our allies. But once the job is done, we'll see where the spirits guide us."

I nodded. "Okay, that sounds simple enough."

We suddenly heard the door open. We both looked back to see Masky and Hoodie. They both waved slightly and walked past us.

"Slender filled us in," Masky said. "We'll see what we can find."

"Thank you, both of you," Selene said.

The two boys nodded in reply and left us. I then realized that Jeff and Jack still weren't with us. It felt a bit odd not having them hovering over us like they usually did. I grinned and nudged Selene.

"Wanna watch some more documentaries?" I asked.

She smiled and nodded. "Sure."

I picked up my opossums and carried them in with me. Selene and I went straight to the living room, seeing that it was vacant. I grabbed the remote and sat down, flipping on the TV.

We watched the fascinating life of sharks. After a short while, I noticed Jack enter the room from the corner of my eye. He was alone this time. He quietly came over and sat on Selene's left side.

The masked girl jumped slightly upon feeling the couch sink in beside her. She turned her head, noticing Jack there next to her.

"Jack, you startled me," she said. "I didn't hear you come in."

Jack tilted his head to the side in confusion. "Didn't you see me?"

"N-No," she muttered.

I didn't say anything, but I remember that Selene is blind in her left eye. She couldn't see Jack approach from that side. I realized just how nice it was to have both my eyes.

"Where's Jeff?" I decided to ask.

"Out killing," Jack answered.

I grumbled. "That's not fair that he still gets to go out and we can't."

"It's just until the proxies find something," he told me. "Anyway, Selene, you still gonna stay in my room?"

She shrugged. "I suppose. I've grown accustomed to sleeping on the floor."

No one said anything else and we just watched the show. It wasn't long before Jack stood and mentioned taking a shower and heading to bed. Selene soon followed after him. I decided to stay put for now, at least until Jeff got back.

Selene's pov

Slipping on my pajamas and fixing my mask, I exited the bathroom. I walked down the hall to Jack's room. Going inside, I saw the masked man sitting on his bed reading a book.

"What are you reading?" I asked.

He looked up from his book. "A medical book. It helps for when I need to cut out a few parts from my victims."

"Interesting."

I went over to his small shelf of books. The majority of them were medical related, but I didn't mind. I picked one out and sat on the floor, flipping it open to start reading.

I noticed out of the corner of my right eye that Jack seemed to be staring at me. I ignored him and began reading. Jack's gaze never seemed to leave me as I read a paragraph.

"Do you ever take off that mask?" he suddenly asked.

I looked up at him. "Do you?"

He nodded. "Yeah, when I shower and stuff."

I turned my attention back to my book. "I don't like showing my face to people I don't trust."

"You don't trust me?" he questioned with a hint of sadness in his tone.

"Well..."

I trailed off, unable to answer him. I don't want to admit it, but I do trust him. I'm starting to truly believe the spirits were right about him. I suddenly noticed Jack getting up and standing over me.

I put down the book and rose to my feet. I quickly backed away a bit, but Jack just stepped closer again. He stood right in front of me, gazing down at me.

"I want to see your face," he said in a somewhat demanding way.

"Only if you show me yours."

"Very well."

He took hold of his mask and lifted it up. He slowly revealed his sharp teeth, which I've seen whenever he eats, then his nose, and finally his whole face. I gasped slightly at seeing his empty sockets.

"You really are... eyeless," I muttered.

"I hope you don't find me... disgusting."

I shook my head. "No, you look fine, Jack."

He grinned, showing his white, shark-like teeth. "Now it's your turn."

I took a deep breath and reached up, grabbing the beak of the bird skull. I slowly slid it up and off my head. I quietly stared at Jack, watching his mouth open slightly.

After a moment, he finally spoke, "That's why you didn't see me earlier. You're half blind."

I rubbed my arm and looked away. "Yes, Naomi is the only other that knows. I don't like people knowing of my weaknesses."

Jack suddenly took hold of my chin, forcing me to look at him. "You're not weak, you're very strong despite not having your full sight."

I smiled slightly. "Thank you."

I was shocked when he suddenly pulled me into a hug. "I also think you look rather pretty," he quietly said in my ear.

After the surprise had worn off, I returned his hug. Something about him is just so... comforting. For once, it just feels like everything will be okay.
