Chapter 16: Mother's Sacrifice
"We ...we were ambushed by a very powerful witch and a few vampires and Werewolf. Are you sure it wasn't...", the hunter leader said when his collar was grabbed by the man in front of him. "Do you think I am a fool to sabotage my own work?" The man bellowed, dark veins were visible around his eyes, which he usually hid with glamour. "No! No! I didn't mean that!"
"Shut up! You weren't even able to protect the base you are assigned with! What a waste! At Least tell me you caught that necromancer witch..." The man composed himself. No point in wasting energy. His face became normal again. He was an old wizard, he needed to focus on what was left.
"Yes! Bring her in!" The leader ordered. Two hunters came in holding a barely conscious witch, she muttered feebly "Leave...me. Where...are..you..."
"Ah! Perfect! She is quite powerful. Take her to base 1, she should be to replace that damn witch. She was so weak, couldn't even last a few weeks. This one should be able to work on the portal."
"But...but the artifact is still not ..."
"Hasn't the mirror been charged with enough blood magic? If not then get MORE!"
"Leave me! Where am I?" The witch shouted.
The wizard got irritated. He grabbed her neck, the ring with a red stone on his finger glowed, as he opened a book to chant a spell, he looked in her eyes and said " Nunc sub mea potestate es. Ad voluntates meas explendas operaberis." The witch's eyes went hazy, "Yes, I shall do what you say."
"Take her with you. And don't disappoint me again. You won't like what I'll do then."
The leader and hunters quickly exited through the tunnels. As the man made his way upstairs, towards his room. He looked composed now. On his way he stumbled across his wife, who didn't even spare him a look let alone greet him. It had been that way for a while. He was furious. How dare she ignore him like that? Once his plan succeeded they will have to beg for his mercy. They won't be able to see him as worthless any more.
Venessa walked in the opposite direction as soon as she saw her husband. She couldn't bear to look at him, all she saw was her daughter's killer. She felt guilty. If only she would have been strong enough to stand up against him, maybe Selene would have been alive today.
Flashback:
Venessa was the king's second cousin, she was forced to marry the king, Orion. She had two abilities of controlling water as an elemental and transportation, which was rare as she wasn't a direct descendant of the royal family. Orion, the only son of the previous witch king, only had the ability of glamour. Thus they got him married to Venessa in the hope that their children would have multiple abilities. Venessa hated the idea of an incestuous marriage. But it had become common among the witches to keep their bloodline 'pure'. But the saddest thing was that Venessa had found her beloved, he was a human. She was scared, if she said something they would have killed her beloved. She got married to Orion. They never loved each other.
Selene was Venessa's middle child. She had three children Emeric, Selene, Eva. According to witches law daughters are preferred to be queens. Selene should have been the heir to the throne. Venessa loved her children dearly, her heart broke when the king deemed Selene unworthy of being queen because she only possessed the ability of glamour, which he didn't consider enough as royals mostly had multiple abilities. The king hated Selene so much, she never understood why. She was furious, the king was such a hypocrite, he himself only had glamour power yet was discriminatory against his daughter.
Selene often would visit the witches market, no one recognised her there, no one judged her, she felt free. Venessa knew about this, she didn't stop her daughter, she knew how suffocating the palace was. The market was where Selene met Valerius, her beloved. She never thought she would find her beloved, but now that she did, she didn't want to stay without him. They both slowly fell in love. Selene had gathered her courage to tell her family that she wanted to be with Valerius. But when she did so, the king became furious, he would never let any witch mix with a Vampire. He locked Selene up, and planned to get her married to one of the heads of the neighbouring coven. Venessa knew she had to do something to stop this, she could let history repeat itself.
Venessa helped Selene escape. "Live happily my dear Selene."
And Selene was very happy, she spent almost twelve years with Valerius and ten years with Seraphina. But the King was relentless in finding her. How dare she run away and hurt his pride. Selene was able to stay hidden for a while as she had never revealed her beloved's identity to the king. But Selene was scared she didn't want them to find her first as that would lead them to her family. So she did what she thought would protect her family, her daughter. She turned herself in. The king was delighted to hear that they had caught the rebellious daughter. Venessa was not happy to hear the news, but she never thought that the King would kill his own daughter.
"How dare you run away! Where is your beloved now! Did he leave you... I told you Vampires can never be trusted! But you didn't listen, did you? Now you must be punished. You dare take me lightly! I am the king!" The king stabbed Selene in the heart and left her to die alone in the dungeon. One would know what happened to the princess other than her mother.
"Why? Why! Why did you come back?" Venessa sobbed as she held her dying daughter. " You shouldn't have..."
"I...I have a...daughter. Ma ... please take care ... of her. Teach her... she is a water...elemental... like you and ... has glamour like me. Please.... Her name is.... Seraphina Bloodthorne."
Venessa fulfilled her daughter's last wish. She taught her granddaughter everything she knew. She would teleport to Seraphina and back to the palace so that no one could ever figure out what she was doing. At first Seraphina's family was against it, but they realised Sera needed that connection with the witch realm. Venessa never really could look at Seraphina with love, when all she felt was guilt. Guilt for not being able to protect her daughter. She was happy to see that Seraphina's family loved and cherished Seraphina. She knew Sera wanted revenge, and she knew she would help her at any cost.
