What Matters

No spoilers but I have a serious problem when it comes to keeping things plain and simple. I just can't seem to do it right...

His constant practice had finally paid off. After countless attempts that had all failed, (y/n) finally achieved success. Not only that, but he also tested it to make sure that it was consistent. And so the big plan was ready to be put into action. "Why are you so happy all of a sudden?" Mordred asked as he entered their shared apartment, obviously suspecting him of something. She had every right to since (y/n) was certainly planning a secret. "What? Quit looking at me like that, it's embarrassing," Mordred whined as she quickly looked away from him.

"Did you have any plans tonight? I want to take you somewhere." Her gaze was his on him again when he spoke.

"Since when do I have plans? Are you okay? Did you hit your head or something?"

"So you'll come with me right? As in, right now. It's best if we go right now," (y/n) urged. "I promise you'll like it."

"Like what? You haven't explained a thing since you walked in. Just tell me what it is," Mordred muttered as she got up from the couch. She had been reading up until he interrupted her. Not a novel of course since Mordred couldn't stand those. Instead she had been giving her full attention to the latest update in her favorite manga. It was clear that she was growing impatient with him.

"Come on, you'll know when we get there. We have to hurry before the sun sets or else it won't be as cool," (y/n) urged as he began to pull her off the couch. She allowed him to lead her by the arm as they left their apartment and began to head towards seemingly nowhere. They passed countless stores and people before Mordred decided to question him again.

"Where exactly are we going? We're nowhere near a bar, so you can't be taking me there."

"No bars. You know I can't take you to any more bars. Not ever," (y/n) reminded.

"It's not like it was my fault," Mordred mumbled in her defense just as they turned a corner down a secluded road. "You're kidding me. We've been to this old building before. There's nothing here. Why would you bring me here?"

"Just come on, it's a surprise of sorts." Mordred kept questioning him after that, but he didn't fail to take notice of her looks of skepticism. They went into the abandoned structure and made their way to the roof where they had a clear view of the sky if they looked straight up. Unlike the inside of the building where dust had plenty of room to settle, the roof was relatively clean.

"If you dragged me away from my manga just to come look at some stars, I'm not talking to you for a week," Mordred threatened. It was far better than her usual threats even if none of them ever came to fruition. "We can't even see any stars in the city. I know that much about them..."

"We're not here to see stars. Come here, I'll show you why I brought you out here."

"I'm literally standing right next to you. What do you want?" she growled. Regardless of her impatience, (y/n) gently pulled her in front of him so that she faced him. She was trapped in a half hug and (y/n) didn't hesitate to press his forehead to hers.

"The hell are you doing..." she mumbled having frozen in place.

"Thought it would work better this way. Just stay still for a bit and close your eyes. Think about the one place you want to go to the most. It can be anywhere, absolutely anywhere," he answered. Mordred was hesitant to follow his instructions, but did just as he asked. He also closed his eyes and allowed his magecraft to activate. To ensure that he could pull this off, he had tested out different places in different times. Though he had never attempted it by using another person's thoughts, he was quite confident that it would still work. "You can open your eyes now. Tell me what you see."

He gave her back her personal space out of respect although he didn't necessarily want to at the moment. The bored stare she automatically gave him quickly turned into a wide eyed gaze as Mordred witnessed a sight she thought she would never see again. (Y/n) was in confusion thinking the magic had failed, but Mordred took hold of his arm failing to find the words she wanted to say. "It's...I'm seeing Camelot. It's really here." Upon seeing her nearly tear up in joy, (y/n) panicked.

"I didn't mean to ups-" he cut his words short when Mordred hugged him. She was only tall enough to reach his shoulder, so she rested her head there and viewed whatever could be seen at her side.

"How did you do this? It looks just like the real deal. No, its definitely real. No magic could fake this detail," she muttered as she drowned him in her subtle affection. He almost forgot to answer her with how proud he was that he somehow pulled off such an advanced spell. "Even from this far up at the top of my father's castle..."

"I'm projecting one of your memories for you to see. It's the best I can do since I can't afford to take you to the real thing. Going back in time somehow might cost me my life, haha..." he internally cringed at his choice of words, mentally slapping himself to right his wrongs. "What are you thinking??"

"You don't look like you can see anything though," Mordred noticed. She had taken a glance at him finding it hard not to force her sight away from the Camelot around her.

"I can't see anything other than the usual city. No worries though. This isn't for me," (y/n) gave a reassuring smile before staring out at the monotonous area of buildings surrounding them.

"I wish you could see it. Camelot is far better than any of this era's stupid tourist attractions." Despite her words, she often enjoyed the very same places she currently trashed. Either way, (y/n) didn't care. Mordred was happy, so he was too. His hard work paid off. "Why did we have to walk all the way out here anyway? Couldn't you have just done this in the apartment?" (Y/n) facepalmed at the realization. Maybe he could have, maybe he couldn't. He didn't have much time to think about it any longer. "Ew, rain," Mordred complained.

Sure enough, drops of rain began to fall at random creating an unpleasant drizzle. "You've got to be kidding me," (y/n) hissed. Before Mordred could complain any further, he pulled her right off of her feet and retreated to the inside of the building. "I didn't mean for it to happen this way, but I can go ahead and get us home before it gets dark out," (y/n) apologized while still carrying Mordred who seemed to still be seeing Camelot. He hadn't released his magecraft yet, so that could have been a high possibility.

"I got to see Camelot. That's all that matters. You wanted me to be in a good mood right? Isn't that why you were so happy earlier?" She didn't make eye contact with him when she said those words. "Aren't I heavy? I can walk on my own, you know," she added. It was this that caused him to smile to himself a bit.

"It's nothing a little magic enhancement can't handle." They left the worn down building, making a quick return to home through the growing drizzle. Only when they were safely at their apartment door did (y/n) let Mordred down from his hold. By now, he knew she was seeing reality once more since his magical energy had been all but exhausted at this point. "Thank you for putting your manga down for my sake," (y/n) mumbled, stealing a quick kiss from Mordred.

"I had already read the new chapter twice before you got back," she scoffed as if she hadn't really prioritized him over a new manga chapter. It didn't matter if she was telling the truth or not though. (Y/n) silently admired her regardless as she retrieved a towel to dry both of their hair. She ran the thick cloth over his head before letting it rest on his shoulders.

"Camelot was actually the second place I'd want to go," Mordred admitted with a sad smile.

"Huh? Then what did you actually see?" (y/n) wondered. She had made it seem like Camelot was there. Those weren't fake reactions that she had given him.

"I definitely saw Camelot, that's for sure...but this place eight here is better than that." She pressed her palm to his heart and he could have sworn he nearly had a heart attack. Mordred toon notice of his stunned silence and immediately hid her face in his chest. "Stop looking stupid when I say stuff..."

Instead of speaking, assuming he could have even found the eight words to say, (y/n) tightly hugged Mordred to himself not wanting to ever let her go. She was all that mattered afterall.

Why the late update? I've been stressed and busy but I managed to try and write something. Two more oneshots left after this. Hope I didn't do badly on this one, I had to redo it a few times.
