Beep... Beep... Beep...

That was the first sound Brianna heard as she stirred back from the abyss of darkness.

She tried to open her eyes but as soon as she did she closed them again. The light was too bright, too bright for the eyes that had been in the dark for so long.

She tried to open them once again, this time slowly. Her vision was blurry but only for a brief moment.

Confusion was the first emotion she felt as the unfamiliar white ceiling came into focus.

Where was she?

Before she could apprehend the situation she was in, she heard a door slide open.

"Bri? Oh my god! Bri you're awake."

"Mom? Mom is that you?" Brianna asked, her voice barely a whisper. She turned to move her head in the direction of the squeal but her body didn't obey her command.

"Yes, baby it's me. I'm so glad your awake. You're finally awake," Jane sobbed as she rushed towards her daughter's side, holding Brianna's hand in hers. Tears started to flow down her cheeks as she said a silent prayer to the gods for bringing her back.

"Where am I mom? Why are you crying?" Brianna continued, confused at the sudden burst of emotion her mom showed. She had never seen her break down like this. Jane had always been a calm and collected woman. So what happened to her?

"It's nothing Bri. I'm just happy. So happy you came back to me," Jane continued to sob but the smile on her face said she wasn't sad.

Before Brianna could ask any more questions she heard a bunch of foot steps approach her.

"Doctor! My baby girl has woken up. This means everything will be alright won't it?" Jane asked a tall blonde looking man who leaned in to have a look at Brianna.

I'm in a hospital? Brianna thought as a slight frown settled on her brows.

"Mrs. Edner, please wait outside so we can exam Brianna," came another voice. This time it was that of a woman. Brianna couldn't see her since she was unable to move her neck.

"Everything is going to be alright Bri," Jane said with a smile. Her tear stained face along with her new formed wrinkles and dark circles made her look twice her age.

Brianna heard the footsteps of her mother get fainter and fainter every second and soon they were gone.

"Hello Brianna. My name is Dr. James Corbin. How are you feeling?" Asked the tall blonde man. Brianna looked at him, not sure what to say.

"I... Why am I here?" Brianna asked. No one seemed to speak. Even though Brianna couldn't see everyone present in the room she could feel the tense atmosphere that had set in. It made her uncomfortable.

Did something bad happen?

"Um... You don't remember anything at all?" Dr. James asked, his faced laced with concern.

"No, I don't think so," Brianna said, trying to recollect her memories.

"What's the last thing you remember?" Dr. James asked, taking a seat beside Brianna.

"I... I can't remember. What is happening to me? Why can't I remember anything at all?" Brianna asked, panicking.

"Hey, hey there is no need to panic. Your safe and that's all that matters. I know what I'm about to say might come as a shock to you but I need you to be a brave girl ok? Can you do that for me?" Dr. James asked, taking Brianna's palm in his. The warmth from his hand seemed to comfort her a bit.

Brianna nodded. She knew that something was wrong, very wrong. She could see that in the eyes of the doctor and in that of her mother's.

"You were in an accident," Dr. James said, his eyes looked straight at her.

"Oh! What happened? Will I be alright? Was anyone else hurt?" Brianna asked but she already knew the answer. The sorrow that lingered in the eyes of the doctor had already told her.

"You were hit by a car. The driver had lost control and crashed into you and no, no one else was hurt," Dr. James said, avoiding the second question.

"Are my injuries serious?" Brianna asked, her heart seemed to beat a hundred miles and hour. She hoped it wasn't anything too bad. She could live with a couple of bruises and scratches.

"We don't know yet. You had been in a coma for about a week now," Dr. James said, his voice slightly lowered.

"Wait! I have been in the hospital for a week? Omg! What is the date today?" Brianna asked, panic setting in on her once again.

"It's the 23rd. Why do you ask?" Dr. James asked, looking confused.

Brianna just stared at him with wide eyes as it took a second for it to sink in.

It couldn't be. This had to be a bad dream. It just had too.

A tear dripped from Brianna's eyes as she laid there motionless.

"Brianna is something wrong? Why are you crying?" Dr. James asked worried.

Brianna didn't answer him. She couldn't even hear him. She had missed it. She had missed her shot at participating in the Olympics. She had missed her competition.

******************

"Bri? Bri! Can you hear me?" Timothy asked as he looked at his daughter with worry.

"Huh? Yes, dad I can hear you," Brianna responded emotionlessly.

Timothy Edner was a man of logic. He had encountered many hardships in life to get to where he was now but seeing his daughter in a full body cast had to be the hardest thing for him to see. But that wasn't the worst part. His daughter's broken spirit tore his heart apart and he couldn't bear it.

The door slid open again and a nurse entered.

"Mr. Edner, the doctors would like to see you."

Timothy turned to look at his daughter. She just stared at the blank wall in front of her.

"Bri, dad has to go out for a bit. I'll be back soon okay?"

"Okay dad," Bri replied, still staring at the white wall. She didn't want to look at her dad. She couldn't bear to see the sorrow he held. It would break her more than she already was.

Timothy followed the nurse to a conference room. Four doctors seemed to have gathered there and his wife had also been seated.

"Mr. Edner please take a seat," said Dr. James as he pointed to an empty seat beside Jane.

"What are we doing here? Is everything ok with my little girl?" Jane asked, looking at the men in front of her with worry.

"Mr and Mrs. Edner, we do have some news about Brianna's condition but I'm afraid it's not good," Dr. James said, opening up a file.

"What does that mean?" Timothy asked holding his wife's trembling hand in his.

"Well Brianna had sustained a pretty bad blow to her spinal cord. Saving her life was in itself a miracle," Dr. Henry said with a straight face.

"Yes, we already know that and we are truly grateful for the efforts you put in doctor but I would like you to cut to the point instead of dragging the topic," Timothy said sternly. He didn't like this feeling at all. The one he gets when something bad was about to happen.

"Very well, I shall cut right to it then. Since Brianna's somatic nervous system was damaged so severely, she mostly won't be able to move her body as she wishes too. In other words she will be paralyzed from the waist down."

"What! What do you mean doctor? Brianna won't be able to walk again? This... there must be a mistake," Jane said her voice cracking as tears started to roll down her bony cheeks.

"I'm sorry Mrs. Edner but there is nothing more we can do for her," Dr. James said.

"What about physical therapy? Will that work? Maybe with practice she will be able to walk again?" Timothy asked hoping for another miracle.

"Yes, we will offer her rehabilitation along with a councilor too. We haven't given up on her yet but looking at the level of damage I need you both to be prepared," Dr. Henry says. He then proceeds to talk about rehabilitation but Timothy heard non of it. All he could think about was how his daughter would handle the news and how he would have to break it to her that her dream of being a figure skater might never come true.

A/n:

Hey guys. I'm back with another chapter. I'm sorry this was a bit sad but it had to be done 😥.

What do you think will be Brianna's reaction when she finds out? What do you think will happen to Timothy and Jane?

Hope you have a good day/evening/night. Love ya!! ❤❤
