Backstory- Charlotte grew up in a home with her older brother Jason, her mother, and her father. Her father was a very controlling man, and wanted to arrange his daughter's marriage himself, to a wealthy and attractive man. Only the very best for his only daughter, he'd say.
Charlotte's mother always felt differently than him, wanting her daughter to be able to choose who she would marry, and to pick someone she loves instead of being arranged to a rich, attractive man. Charlotte adored her mother as much as her mother adored her, but she really didn't like her father, who was always treating her as if she were still a young child.
A few months before her arranged wedding, Charlotte was sitting on the sofa on a cold winter's night, drinking cocoa by the warm fireplace. Charlotte was supposed to be in bed, but she couldn't help but stay up on another sleepless night, seeing as it was hailing out and all she could hear was the hard ice balls hitting against the roof of her home.
She heard a knock at her door, and she wondered who would be out this late at night, and in such a storm! Charlotte hurried to the door, opening it to reveal a beautiful young girl standing there, wounded. She had long wavy brown hair and her eyes and face were covered by a long black hood. She wasn't able to make out any features of the girl. The girl was in a big green dress and she looked very distressed. The girl held out her arm, which had a long vertical cut down it, and she asked Charlotte for help.
Charlotte being the kindly girl she was, invited her in, not realizing that it would be a big mistake. As soon as she was able to enter, the girl shut the door behind her and forcefully poured her blood into Charlotte's mouth, before snapping her neck.
A while after that, Charlotte woke up with her older brother beside her, the two of them covered in blood. She stood, very sensitive to everything around her. Charlotte realized that it was still the middle of the night, maybe about two in the morning at the latest, and her brother was unconscious as well. Charlotte didn't know if he was alive or dead, since she heard no heart but she saw breathing. Then it occurred to her that she could hear things she normally wouldn't, like the squirrels running around outside, and the sound of her own ragged breathing. All of her senses were increased, in fact. Charlotte ran upstairs, but ended up speeding all the way up- like at the speed of light. What was going on? (A/N: yes, she is already a vampire. yes, she transitioned in her sleep. let's just say that the girl who turned her made sure she had no other choice but to be a vampire.)
Charlotte gasped once she reached her parents old wooden door, that was partially open. She had no idea she could run so fast, and as soon as she opened the door, she let out a blood curdling scream. Charlotte heard thunder and lightning outside, making the entire situation worse. As she stared at her parents blood drained, gray, grotesque bodies, she realized the woman who had came in was a vampire, and now she herself was part of the undead.
Charlotte felt a few tears slip down her defined face. Her parents were covered in their own blood, their white sheets and wooden flooring ruined completely by the blood. Charlotte turned to see the words: Mystic Falls. 2009 written on the mirror in her parents' blood.
Suddenly Jason, her brother, was behind her. He leaned in slowly and whispered in Charlotte's ear, "She's gone. They're dead. Whoever did this got hungry. Good riddance to them, too..."
Charlotte let out a long, shaky breath as she turned around and hit his chest gently, "Don't say such awful things about them! Father may have been an ass, but they're still our parents." Jason rose his eyebrows at her, surprised at the language she was using. Usually she wasn't permitted to talk disrespectfully at all, especially around him.
He only glared at her a bit and rolled his eyes, "You know, a proper young lady would never use such language in the presence of a superior." After that, Charlotte apologized. She was taught as a child to be the submissive partner and listen to the man of the relationship (in all relationships). Charlotte bowed her head in silence, mourning her dead parents as her brother scoffed. He hated them both, and always would. Charlotte kissed her mother's head and her father's cheek, before laying a clean sheet over them. She cried quietly, as her brother wrapped an arm around her and walked her downstairs, sitting her down and holding her for a while, calming her down. He stroked her hair as she cried into his chest, and he vowed he'd always protect her.
After Charlotte regained her composure, she walked to the kitchen to prepare something to eat. realizing she had a hunger she couldn't control, and she was sure Jason had too. She then realized that she had an insane thirst as well, and so did her brother. Charlotte ignored it until she walked back into the living quarters, where the blood had been. She saw the dried blood and her face started to get red veins down it, her fangs coming out.
She quickly turned around, her face going back to normal as she rang her best friend Nikitta, picking up the part of the telephone you talk into, turning the dial to the correct numbers before hearing the rings. Nikitta answered quickly and Charlotte wondered why she'd be awake so late at night for. Nikitta was inspiring to Charlotte. She took a no-man vow and lived alone, working as a dress maker and making enough money to pay for her house. Nikitta always had her friend Anastasia over, Charlotte noticed. Anastasia would always sleep over and when Charlotte would come she often found them asleep in the same bed.
Charlotte asked Nikitta if her father was at work, seeing as he worked late shifts at the hospital. Nikitta said yes, but asked worriedly if everything was okay. Charlotte brushed it off and headed to the hospital, Jason having been asleep. Charlotte told a nurse that Nikitta's father had offered to give her blood bags to deliver to a neighboring hospital, and since Nikitta's father was on duty, the nurse believed her and gave her the blood bags, causing Charlotte's True Face to almost come out in front of her. However she turned away from her at the right time, thanked her, and delivered the blood bags to her home.
Charlotte and her brother drank the blood bags till they were all gone, having been insanely thirsty and not being able to control how much they wanted to drink. Charlotte was surprised she didn't drink people, but it showed she had a good amount of restraint. Charlotte then smiled and watched as her brother pulled open a curtain on the opposite end of the room to let light in, but then he shut it immediately once he started to burn. Jason hissed in pain as his burns healed.
Charlotte was then immediately moved to the basement, and locked down there with her belongings. Jason would also go down there to sleep, but at night he roamed freely. He "kept Charlotte safe" in their basement, away form the humans and away from the burning sun. People wondered about their parents, but Jason said that their parents went missing to any curious neighbors and locals. Jason buried the bodies late one night, or well... "got rid" of them. He threw them in the lake and hoped they'd never be found.
Surprisingly, Nikitta admitted to Charlotte that she was a witch, and that she had known for quite some time. She also admitted Anastasia was a witch, and was her romantic partner (they hadn't made any labels yet, seeing as homophobia was a HUGE issue back then). That's when Charlotte finally admitted she was in the basement. Not because she couldn't face the rest of her house due to her trauma, but because she was a vampire. Charlotte knew that since Nikitta was supernatural, she wouldn't mind her being a vampire. She had been dying to tell Nikitta the truth for quite some time, so she was finally able to.
Nikitta promised Charlotte and Jason she'd find a spell to make them walk in the daylight. After months of reading and re-reading her grimoire, she borrowed Anastasia's family grimoire (which was a sacred thing to borrow in the witch community back then) and found a daylight ring spell and had rings made for Jason and Charlotte, and for Charlotte an extra bracelet just in case. Nikitta had done a few spells before that one, so she recited the incantation with some ease and gave them their spelled jewelry.
One evening, as Charlotte returned home (after finally being able to leave the house), she found it burning. She believed her brother was dead, because all of his belongings were in the fire and nothing had been moved like it was burgled and then set on fire. Charlotte ran away, never turning back. She knew that now that every part of her old life was gone, she'd have to start a new one for herself, one she'd actually want to live. Despite getting a restart button on life, she was very upset and in a state of depression for a long while after leaving. That's when she met Stefan Salvatore, a man who was a vampire just like her.
They immediately hit it off, and to her surprise she found herself sticking with him, the two of them becoming partners in crime. Stefan was an older brother to her, even more so than her actual brother was. He taught her the tricks of vampirism: compelling, drinking animal blood works, crosses are a myth, vervain is a no-no, and many many other things. He treated her with respect and with kindness, always. Stefan treated her like he would a sister, and loved her very much.
One night, she remembered the writing on her parents' mirror that one storming night- that she had tried to forget about-, and she was surprised that by 2009, Stefan was in Mystic Falls with her. She didn't even have to tell him about the bloody mirror, because he had taken her with him there, apparently to the place he had grown up in. It was odd that he had grown up there, considering that was written on her parents' mirror the night they were murdered. However, she didn't want to bring it up and decided what happens, happens. Besides, he was only there because he was pursuing this cute girl he saved in a car accident. Then, she saw his annoying brother Damon again, and she realized this was going to be a long year in Mystic Falls.
