{5} Corinthia Cabello

WHEN STEFAN AND I got to school, we could see people walking, playing basketball and throwing footballs. There was one person though who caught Stefan's eye and that was Elena, who was talking with Bonnie. They had started dating after that kiss they had that one night. It had all happened really fast now that I think about it, but I was still happy for them nevertheless.

Stefan walked over to the two girls and he started to talk to them. After Stefan said something, Bonnie turned to Elena, said something, and then left. I was wondering what could have happened so I chased after her. When I caught up to her, I tapped her shoulder causing her to turn to me.

"Hey," I said to the girl. "What's got you making that face for?"

"I can't find Caroline. I've tried texting her, but she isn't answering." Bonnie replied.

"That is really weird... And you haven't seen her at all today?" I asked her. I haven't known Caroline for that long, but she almost always replies to her messages and she always shows up for school.

"No. Could you keep an eye out for her?" Bonnie asked.

"Sure." I replied. Then, we hear the school bell ring and we start going to our class.

{In history class.}

"World war II ended in...Anyone got anything?" Mr. Tanner asked us. He was as always calling out on people to see if they knew anything. Some people did and some people didn't. "Miss Juan?" The girl shrugged and Mr. Tanner sighed, "1945. Pearl Harbor?"

I thought I heard someone talking and I turned to see it Elena and Stefan. They were just talking about football for some reason and I knew that I probably missed something. I wasn't really in the right state of mind for some reason. It's mostly because I feel like something bad is going to happen. I don't know what though, I can't seem to place it.

"Miss Gilbert?" I heard Mr. Tanner call out causing me to come back to reality.

Elena turned around and looked at Mr. Tanner, "Hmm?"

"Pearl Harbor?" Mr. Tanner repeated.

"Um..." Elena said, trying to think of the answer.

"December 7, 1941." Stefan cut in. Elena turned to look at him, as well as me.

"Thank you, Miss Gilbert." Mr. Tanner said sarcastically, looking pointedly at Stefan,

"Anytime." Stefan told him.

"Very well. The fall of the Berlin wall." Mr. Tanner said, looking around at the class, but that didn't last long.

"1989." Mr. Tanner looked over at Stefan and all Stefan said after that was, "I'm good with dates, sir." I roll my eyes, amused. He is such a show-off. He is always trying to show-off in front of someone and he is doing it a lot more now that he's got a girlfriend. I find it amusing though.

"Are you? How good?" Mr. Tanner asked, but it sounded more like he was asking himself. Mr. Tanner had a thoughtful look on his face before he spoke again. "Keep it to the year. Civil Rights Act."

"1964." Stefan said.

"John F. Kennedy assassination." Mr. Tanner looked calm so far, but he was going to get frustrated in a minute.

"1963."

"Martin Luther King."

"'68."

"Lincoln." Mr. Tanner was looking frustrated now.

"1865."

"Roe vs. Wade."

"1973."

"Brown vs. Board." Mr. Tanner was closer to Stefan now.

"1954."

"The battle of Gettysburg."

"1863."

"Korean war."

"1950 to 1953."

Mr. Tanner looked really happy now and he leaned closer to Stefan saying, "Ha! It ended in '52."

Tanner started walking back up to the front, but Stefan spoke up again, "Uh, actually, sir, it was '53."

Tanner looked a little furious and he looked at all the rest of us, "Look it up, somebody. Quickly." Some kids looked it up on their phones and others looked it up in their books.

A minute later, one student spoke up, "It was 19...53."

{In the hallway.}

We all walk out of class, Elena and Stefan in front of me while I hang back a little.

"How did you know all of that?" Elena asked.

"Years and years of crossword puzzles. It's a loner thing." Stefan replied. I laugh a little to myself at the excuse. Elena leaves and I walk over to Stefan, lightly bumping his arm to get his attention.

"You are such a show-off, you know that?" I ask him, smiling.

"Thank you." Stefan said to me, smiling sarcastically.

{Football field}

I was sitting on the bleachers, watching the football players practice and looking at the cheerleaders warm up. Stefan thinks that I should be a cheerleader, but I'm not much for looking happy all of the time. It's also just not my type of thing that I like to do. I'm more of a stay-home-and-watch-TV kind of girl.

I hear a car engine coming from where the cheerleaders are and I turn to see Damon's car. Damon is sitting in the front seat and Caroline is sitting beside him, wearing a scarf around her neck. Well, I know where Caroline was now. Caroline opens the car door and before she gets out of the car, she turns and kisses Damon. This surprising me greatly because I didn't think Damon could actually get a girlfriend. Caroline gets out of the car and I wait a bit before walking over to Damon's car.

"Why were you with Caroline, Damon?" I asked him.

Damon looked at me with a look of fake surprise, "Char, fancy seeing you here! How is your day going?"

"Damon, answer my question." I give him a stern look.

"Oh, you didn't know?" Damon asked me, faking surprise again. "We're dating, as you can see. Well, I got to go now. See ya!" I step away from the car and he drove away, but not before giving me a little wink. Have I said how much he infuriates me? Because he does.

{Elena's house.}

Bonnie, Elena, and I are in Elena's kitchen making dinner for tonight. Apparently, Elena invited Stefan and I over for dinner. She mostly wanted to do this dinner so Stefan and Bonnie could get closer. Elena grabbed two bowls that were on the counter as Bonnie talking to us.

"You explain it. Last night, I'm watching Nine-o, a commercial breaks come on and I'm like, I bet it's that phone commercial. And sure enough, it's that guy and the girl with the bench, he flies to Paris and he flies back. They take a picture." Bonnie said.

"Oh, come on. That commercial's on a constant loop." Elena said to her, handing her a bag.

"Fine. Well, how about this? Today I'm obsessed with numbers. 3 numbers. I keep seeing 8, 14, and 22. How weird is that?" Bonnie asked us. That is kind of weird, I wonder what they mean.

"Maybe we should play the lottery." Elena said, jokingly. Bonnie gives her a look and Elena continued, "Have you talked to your Grams?"

"She's just gonna say it's because I'm a witch. I don't want to be a witch. Do you guys want to be a witch?" Bonnie asked us.

"I don't want to be a witch." Elena said to her.

"I think being a witch would be pretty cool." I answered her. It wouldn't be too bad. I mean, you could do really cool stuff. Elena and Bonnie give me a look. "I'm not helping, am I?" I asked. Elena pours the food from the to-go box and into a bowl.

"And putting it in a nice bowl isn't fooling anybody." Bonnie smiled.

"Okay, serving spoons. Where are the serving spoons?" Elena asked, looking around in the drawers behind us.

"Middle drawer on your left." Bonnie said. Elena looked at Bonnie and then opened the drawer. Weird enough, they are right where she said that they would be.

"Okay, so you've been in this kitchen like a thousand times." Elena said, coming back over to us.

"Yeah, that's it." Bonnie sighed. Just then, we heard the doorbell ring and all of us look in the direction of the door.

"Okay, he's here. Don't be nervous. Just be your normal loving self." Elena said to Bonnie.

{Awhile later. The Dining Room.}

All four of us sat in the Dining room and ate the food laid out in front of us. It was so quiet that I could hear the stillness around us and our utensils hitting the plates. It was also the awkward kind of silence which made me move around a little and look around the room.

Elena decided to speak up and it broke the silence in the room, "Did Tanner give you a hard time today?"

"Well, he let me on the team, so I must have done something right." Stefan replied.

Elena smiled and turned her head to look at Bonnie, "Bonnie, you should have seen Stefan today. Tyler threw a ball right at him, and-"

Bonnie cut the girl off, "Yeah, I heard." It was silence again after that. Elena drank from her cup and we all were plunged back into awkwardness again.

"Why don't you tell Stefan about your family?" Elena asked Bonnie.

"Um, divorced. No mom. Live with my dad." Bonnie said.

"No, about the witches." When those words came out of Elena's mouth, Stefan snapped his head toward her. "Bonnie's family has a lineage of witches. It's really cool."

"Cool isn't the word I'd use." Bonnie simply said.

"Well, it's certainly interesting. I'm not too versed, but I do know that there's a history of Celtic druids that migrated here in the 1800s." Stefan said to her.

"My family came by way of Salem." Bonnie explained.

"Really? Salem witches?" Stefan asked. Way too keep it subtle, Stefan.

"Yeah." Bonnie replied, silently.

"I would say that's pretty cool." Stefan said, sounding really interested.

"Really? Why?" Bonnie asked him, confused.

"Salem witches are heroic examples of individualism and nonconformity." Stefan explained to the girl. I actually didn't know that, I guess you learn something new everyday.

Bonnie smiled, "Yeah, they are." The doorbell rang out for the second time tonight and I was confused. Did Elena invite anyone else? By the confused look on her face, I'm guessing she didn't.

"I wonder who that could be." Elena gets up and walked over to the door. A second later after Elena left to answer the door, Stefan excused himself and went with Elena. Bonnie and I looked at each other for a second, shrugged, and went back to eating.

{A few minutes later. The Living Room.}

We all sat in the Living Room, talking to each other. It turns out the people at the door were Caroline and Damon. This night was just starting to get good until Damon came in. You know what they say though, good things don't last forever. I'm fine with Caroline being here, but as I have said a million times, Damon infuriates me. Stefan sat with Elena, Caroline sat with Damon, and since Bonnie and I are the only one without boyfriends, we sat with each other.

"I cannot believe that Mr. Tanner let you on the team. Tyler must be seething. But good for you. Go for it." Caroline said, setting her cup down on the coffee table.

"That's what I always tell him. You have to engage. You can't just sit there and wait for life to come to you. You have to go get it." Damon said as I just roll my eyes.

"Yeah, Elena wasn't so lucky today. It's only because you missed summer camp. God, I don't know how you're ever going to learn the routines." Caroline said. I looked over at Elena and saw she looked a little offended. I know why too because that was a low blow.

"I'll work with her. She'll get it." Bonnie cut in.

"I guess we can put her in the back." Caroline said with a thoughtful look on her face.

"You know, you don't seem like the cheerleader type, Elena." Damon commented.

"Oh, it's just 'cause her parents died. Yeah, I mean, she's just totally going through a blah phase. She used to be way more fun." My eyes widened a little along with Bonnie's as we just heard what Caroline said. "And I say that with complete sensitivity."

"I'm sorry, Elena. I know what it's like to lose both your parents. In fact, Stefan and I have watched almost every single person we've ever cared about die." Damon said.

"We don't need to get into that right now, Damon." Stefan said to his brother.

"Oh, you know what, you're right, Stef. I'm sorry. The last thing I wanted to do was bring them up." Damon said. I saw Stefan shoot me a quick glance when Damon said that. I was confused I know one of the people Damon was talking about was Katherine, but who was the other one?

{In the kitchen}

I was in the kitchen washing the dishes for Elena because it was the least I could do for her for inviting me. I put some of the dishes in the dishwasher when I heard someone behind me. I turn a little to see Damon standing there with another cup in his hands.

"One more." He said, holding the cup out to me.

"Thanks." I said to him. I reached out to grab it and Damon dropped it, well "dropped" it and then caught it again. I gave him a look and asked him, "Really?" I grabbed the cup from his hands.

"I really like you. You know how to laugh. And you make Stefan smile, which is something I haven't seen in a very long time." Damon said as he moved to the other side of me.

I though about asking him something, but I wasn't sure if I should ask it or not. But I asked anyways, "What did you mean earlier? When you said 'them'? I know one of them had to be Katherine, but who is the other one?"

"The other one was Corinthia Cabello." Damon replied with a thoughtful look on his face.

"Who's Corinthia?" I asked him. I've never heard Stefan mention her before and that's mostly why I'm curious. Stefan usually tells me everything. Notice how I say usually and not always. There are sometimes when he doesn't tell me something because he thinks he's protecting me. I think it's stupid though and he worries about me too much.

"Someone who was very close to Stefan and I, a long time ago." Damon answered.

"How come Stefan never mentioned her?" I questioned the older vampire.

"Bad memories." Damon replied again. He still had that thoughtful look on his face and I knew that she meant a very great deal to him.

"What was Corinthia like?" I asked, hesitantly.

"She was very beautiful. A lot like you. She was very kind, and headstrong, and very stubborn which is a lot like someone else I know." When Damon said the last part, he shot me a knowing look. I was about to speak about me not being that stubborn, but I stopped myself knowing that it wouldn't be entirely true.

I thought for another second before asking, "Who did you like first?"

Damon smirked, "Nicely deduced." Before he could answer, Elena walked into the room.

"Hey guys." She said to us.

Then out of nowhere, Damon said, "I'd quit cheerleading if I were you."

Elena walked over to the hand towels and started to fold them, "Why do you say that?"

"Oh, I saw you at practice. You looked miserable." Damon said to her.

"You saw that?" Elena asked.

"Am I wrong?" Damon questioned her.

"I used to love it. It was fun. Things are different this year. Everything that used to matter doesn't anymore." Was all she replied with.

"So don't let it. Quit, move on. Problem solved. Ta-da." Damon said as if it were the most simple thing in the world. That's the way Damon is though. He sometimes can look at a problem that would be hard for some people to figure out and he would answer it like it wasn't the least bit hard.

"But you know, somethings can start to matter again." I said.

"Maybe. But...seems a little unrealistic to me." Damon said to me. I looked at him, thoughtfully when I realized something. This is the longest time that I have been in the same place as Damon and not get infuriated by him. It was like all the sudden that feeling of fury was replaced by a feeling of calmness. I was broken out of my thoughts by Bonnie walking into the room.

"Hey. Need some help?" Bonnie asked us.

"Sure, why not?" Damon replied.
