{23} "No Way. Never."

***

I was sitting in Elena's kitchen and was listening to Damon and Jenna talk. I wasn't expecting to be here until Damon came and told me that we were coming here. I tried to protest with saying that I was busy, which I really just didn't want to go anywhere, but he saw right through my lie. So here I was staring off into space as they talked amongst themselves. I tuned back into the conversation to hear Damon say, "Hello, Elena."

Jenna and I turned around to see Elena walking to the kitchen. She stared at me and Damon in shock. We did just randomly dropped by so I can understand the confusion.

"Hey. Where have you been? We're cooking dinner." Jenna told her.

Damon looked at the brunette, "Is Stefan with you?"

"Um - he'll be here soon." Elena leaned against the counter that Jenna was sitting on. She looked at Damon with a look of distaste. This was going to be a very long day.

Jenna had went off somewhere and Jeremy now sat in the living room playing a video game. Damon placed something on the dinner table and he turned around to walk back into the kitchen. He ended up bumping into Elena who was carrying plates. Damon said as he bumped into her, "Whoa. Mmm." I scoffed and shook my head.

Elena walked towards the table, "Don't do that."

"Do what?" Damon asked innocently.

Elena continued to set up the table, "You know what. That move was deliberate."

I smirked slightly, "It's not like you were trying to hide it."

"I was deliberately trying to get to the sink," Damon told us. Elena turned to look at him and scoffed. He was standing over the stove and stirring the sauce in the pot. "Speaking of Stefan, where is he? He's missing family night, which I am enjoying immensely," Damon smirked at me as I walked to help Elena set the table, "Is it real?"

I stopped and looked back at him in confusion. What was he talking about? His question seemed to be directed towards Elena. I was curious as to what he was asking though.

"Is what real?" Elena inquired.

"This renewed sense of brotherhood," He tasted the sauce and the asked, "Can I trust him?"

Elena stared at him for a second and gave him a bold look, "Yes, you can trust him."

I raised my hand, "I seem to be missing something here." Neither of them said anything. Elena walked back over to place napkins on the table. Damon suddenly vamp-speeded over to stand behind her. Elena turned and looked up at him.

"Can I trust him?" Damon asked again.

"I'm wearing vervain, Damon," Elena shook her head at him, "It's not going to work."

Damon squinted his eyes at her, "I'm not compelling you. I just want you to answer me. Honestly."

Elena hesitated before replying, "Of course you can." Elena moved past Damon to walk into the kitchen.

I walked over to him, "What was that about?"

He turned to me and smiled, "Nothing for you to worry about." Then he went back to what he was doing. I feel like I'm missing something very important, but I just don't know what. What are they keeping from me?

I helped Elena and Jenna in the kitchen. I looked over in the living room to see Damon was playing video games with Jeremy. They seemed to be talking about something, but I didn't bother to listen in. I was minding my own business when Jenna whispered, "He is ridiculously hot!"

Elena shushed her and looked over at Damon, "He's an ass." I laughed a little bit at that.

Jenna smirked and turned to me, "I can totally see you and him, Charlotte."

I gave her a surprised look and shook my head, "No way. Never." Jenna continued to smirk at me and I shook my head again with a smile. There was no way that I was ever going to date Damon. He doesn't seem like the type to actually settle down and date someone. Elena was looking through a box filled with stuff.

Jenna looked around at it, "What are you doing with all this stuff?"

"I thought there might be something about my birth parents." Elena said.

Jenna turned to stare at the boys, "Have you told Jeremy?"

Elena froze and then nodded, "I will. When the time is right." She closed the box and that's when we heard the doorbell ring.

I knew who it was immediately, "That must be Stefan." I walked over to the front door with Elena following behind me. I opened the door to see that it was indeed Stefan. Stefan stared behind me and I slowly turned to see Damon. I jumped a little and pointed a him as I said, "When did you get here?"

Damon smirked at me then turned to look at Stefan with a serious look, "Well?" Stefan had explained what had happened and the four of us walked out on the porch to talk. To say that Damon was mad would be an understatement, "Who took it?"

"I don't know." Stefan responded.

"You know what, it's that teacher," Damon stopped in his tracks and turned to look at us, "There's something really off about him."

Stefan crossed his arms, "No, he doesn't know anything. Somebody got to it right before me."

"Who else knew it was there?" Damon questioned. Stefan looked through the window and was staring at something. I looked at him in confusion before turning and seeing Jeremy in my line of sight. Damon was staring at him as well and he started to walk back inside the house.

I walked after him, "Damon, no."

"Damon, leave him out of it!" Elena also said.

Damon continued to walk to the door, "Why, what's the big deal?"

"Damon!" Elena exclaimed as we all walked inside. Jeremy was still sitting on the couch and Damon sat on the couch arm beside of him.

He stared at the TV and started talking, "So... I heard you found a really cool journal from back in the day. Who else did you show it to?"

Jeremy wasn't really paying attention and was too focused on his game, "Huh?"

"Don't ask questions, just spill." Damon told him.

Jeremy chuckled, "You're kidding me, right?"

Elena cut in making Jeremy look over at her, "Jer, did you tell anyone other than Mr. Saltzman about Johnathan Gilbert's journal?"

"Why is everybody so obsessed with that thing?" Jeremy asked in interest.

"Who else did you tell?" Elena inquired.

Jeremy replied, "Just that girl Anna."

"The hot, weird one?" Damon questioned.

Jeremy nodded, "Yeah."

I watched in confusion and then joined in the conversation, "Wait, I'm sorry. Who's this Anna girl?"

Damon glanced over at me, "That's what I want to find out." Elena's phone started to ring making me look over at her. She walked away so she could answer it leaving Stefan and I with Damon. Damon continued to ask Jeremy questions, "How do you know her?"

"I just know her," Was Jeremy's answer. I raised an eyebrow at him, that isn't helpful at all. "She wants me to meet her at the Grill tonight." Now that is something that's helpful.

"Perfect," Damon looked over at Stefan and I then back at Jeremy, "I'll drive. Come on."

"O-Okay."" Jeremy stuttered out. Damon grabbed Jeremy's arm and started to lead him out of the house. It all happened so fast that I barely understood what just happened.

I turned to Stefan with a confused look, "What just happened?" He shook his head. I shook my head as well and sighed, "Well, I'm gonna go home. Damon dragged me away when I was trying to take a nap. So I will see you later." Stefan nodded at me with a small smile.

I grabbed all of my stuff and walked out of the house. I was lost in my own little world as I walked home. It was like everything around me wasn't even there. Or... at least it was. I was so lost in my own world that I didn't notice someone walking up behind me. I felt a prick in my neck and I fell to the ground. I had been stabbed with a needle and inside of it was vervain. My life just keeps getting better and better. That was my last thought as I slowly faded out of consciousness.
