Chapter 4 - Journey Begins

The twins stood in the training yard, their weapons gleaming under the midmorning sun. Ardent's great sword swung through the air with precision, while Balenor, shield raised, braced himself against his brother's strikes. Their routine was interrupted by the sharp toll of the village bell.

"We're under attack! It's the Abyss!" came a panicked voice from a villager.

In an instant, the training stopped. Ardent's eyes locked with Balenor's, a silent understanding passing between them. They sprinted toward the village entrance, the familiar mountain terrain crunching beneath their boots. A thick fog rolled in from the higher peaks, casting an eerie veil over the village's surroundings.

At the entrance, the first of the Abyss creatures appeared—hound-like beasts, sleek and shadowy, their forms rippling with dark energy. The creatures moved as one, eyes glowing with malevolence as they prowled toward the village.

"Ardent, to the left!" Balenor shouted, raising his shield just in time to deflect the lunging attack of one hound. Ardent swung his sword in a wide arc, cleaving through the air as the edge met with dark flesh.

But the creatures were relentless. Each time one was cut down, another took its place, its snarls more vicious than the last. For all their coordination and power, the twins quickly realized something was wrong.

"These aren't like any beasts we've fought," Ardent panted, slicing another creature, only for two more to take its place.

Balenor deflected another strike, but the weight behind the attack sent him stumbling. "They're too many," he growled. "Our weapons aren't enough."

A sudden surge of warmth washed over them. From a distance, they could see the village elder, Ka, standing on a ridge overlooking the battlefield. His hands glowed with spirit energy, and in the next breath, the twins felt the power surge into their bodies.

With renewed strength, the twins pressed on, their weapons now cutting through the Abyss hounds with ease. For a moment, they believed they had turned the tide. But something changed.

The hounds paused, their dark eyes shifting from the twins to the ridge where Ka stood. They had sensed the elder's energy.

"They're going after Ka!" Balenor shouted.

Before either twin could move, the ground shook. From the shadows emerged a hulking figure, far larger than the hounds—a monstrous Abyss creature resembling a bear, its fur rippling with dark tendrils of corruption. It roared, the sound reverberating through the mountains, and charged toward Ka.

"Go!" Ardent yelled, and they both ran toward the elder, cutting down the remaining hounds as they gave chase.

The bear was fast, but the twins were faster. They intercepted the beast just as it lunged for Ka. Balenor's shield clashed with the creature's massive paw, the force sending him skidding back, but he held firm. Ardent's sword swung in a blinding arc, striking the beast across its side, but the wound only seemed to enrage it further.

The bear lashed out again, catching Balenor's shield and knocking him off his feet. Ardent stepped in, his sword blazing with spirit energy as he drove it into the beast's shoulder, but the creature didn't falter.

With a final, devastating swipe, the bear sent both twins crashing to the ground. Dazed and exhausted, they struggled to rise.

Ka stood still, his eyes glowing with concentrated spirit power. "Hold on... just a moment longer," he whispered.

The Abyss bear loomed over the elder, its maw opening wide, but the twins forced themselves up, shields and swords raised once more. They moved in unison, blocking the bear's next attack—just long enough for Ka to gather the energy he needed.

With a blinding flash, the elder unleashed a wave of spirit energy, slamming into the bear and sending it hurtling back into the darkness. The remaining hounds dissipated, their forms dissolving as the power washed over them.

The battle was over.

Breathing heavily, the twins staggered to Ka's side, their bodies aching from the fight. The elder's face was grim as he surveyed the battlefield, the weight of what had just occurred settling in.

"Today we survive," Ka said quietly, his voice heavy with dread. "But the Abyss has found us."

As the sun rose over the mountain village, casting long shadows across the stone halls, the twins knelt before Elder Ka.  The air was thick with anticipation.

Elder Ka: "The time has come for you to understand the true nature of what lies ahead. You've faced the Abyss hounds, but they are only the first of many threats." He paused, his eyes narrowing. "You are still far from your true potential."

Balenor: "What do you mean? We fought as hard as we could..."

Elder Ka: "Strength alone is not enough. Beyond the physical world flows the Etherflow, the source of all life and spirit. This current touches everything—beneath the earth, within the skies. And from this current, rare crystals known as Vylscyra emerge."

The twins exchanged glances, confusion evident.

Ardent: "Vylscyra? Is that...what we need to fight the Abyss?"

Elder Ka: "In part, yes. The Vylscyra are far more than just stones. They resonate with your spirit, amplifying both your physical and spiritual power. But they do not simply lie hidden, waiting to be found. No... These crystals awaken only in moments of great need or triumph. When the Etherflow touches the surface, these crystals take form, and they will bind themselves to those who prove worthy."

Balenor: "So...we have to earn them?"

Elder Ka: "Precisely. Some may appear during battle, others as you journey further across the land. You will know when a Vylscyra calls to you—it will draw you toward it, as the spirit energy between you and the crystal becomes one."

The elder raised his hand, revealing an ancient rune carved into his palm.

Elder Ka: "But the Vylscyra is not the only tool you must master. From the village elders, you will receive the Zeifren—marks of ancient power, runes imbued with the wisdom of those who came before. Each elder holds a unique Zeifren. These marks will allow you to unlock techniques and knowledge far beyond your current understanding."

Ardent: "Zeifren..." He repeated the word, rolling it over his tongue. "And these marks... they'll make us stronger?"

Elder Ka: "Indeed. The Zeifren amplify your abilities, especially when you fight as one. This leads me to your greatest strength—the bond between you, the Nexari." His eyes sharpened. "The Nexari is not just the link between your hearts; it is the spiritual tether that connects your souls to the Etherflow. As your bond deepens, so too will your power to harness it."

Balenor: "And how does this work?"

Elder Ka: "When you fight side by side, your Nexari allows you to unlock powers that neither of you could wield alone. Together, you will draw upon the Etherflow to create powerful joint techniques—those that will strike down even the strongest of Abyss creatures."

Ardent: "What about the Abyss? Will they sense these powers?"

Elder Ka: His face grew grim. "Yes. The Vylscyra, the Zeifren, the Nexari... All of these resonate with the Etherflow, and the Abyss will sense that power as surely as you will. The moment you embrace this path, the Abyss will be drawn to you, like moths to flame."

The room grew quiet. The weight of the elder's words settled over the twins like a shroud.

Elder Ka: "This will not be an easy journey. But with the Vylscyra in your weapons, the Zeifren marking your spirits, and the Nexari strengthening your bond, you will have the power to stand against the Abyss."

The twins stood, the resolve in their eyes undeniable.

Ardent: "We're ready."

Balenor: "Whatever it takes, we'll fight together."

Elder Ka nodded solemnly, stepping forward and placing his hands on their shoulders. His gaze held an almost fatherly weight, full of pride and worry.

Elder Ka: "Then go. Start your journey. Protect the Life Tree, seek out the other villages, and know that this is only the beginning. The Abyss has found us, but it is not the end."

As the twins turned to leave, Elder Ka called to them.

Elder Ka: "Before you depart, there is one more thing you will need for your journey."

The elder opened a hidden compartment in the stone altar before him, revealing a small, orb-like device with intricate, glowing runes etched across its surface.

Elder Ka: "This is the Luxon Lens, a tool of great importance. It will help you navigate the Etherflow and sense the presence of Vylscyra, Abyssal forces, and even your own growth in power." He handed the orb to Ardent, the light in its core softly pulsing.

Ardent: "What does it do?"

Elder Ka: "Through this lens, you will be able to see things that remain hidden to the naked eye—the flow of your spirit energy, your progress, and the strength of your foes. It will reveal messages from the Ether, like the skills you've unlocked or your strength in numbers. Think of it as both a compass and a gauge."

The twins stared at the glowing orb in awe.

Balenor: "So, it will show us...our progress? Even new abilities?"

Elder Ka: "Yes. When you acquire new powers, it will display your achievements. You will know when you've grown stronger. But be warned—just as it reveals your strength, it also reveals your weakness. Watch it closely, for the Abyss can sense when you are at your most vulnerable."

Elder Ka: "The Abyss is not yet defeated. Seek the truth that lies beyond our borders."

Ardent: "Where do we begin? We've barely scratched the surface of what we're up against."

Elder Ka: "You must travel north. The other villages have seen signs of Abyss creatures as well. They are not as fortunate as us... their defenses are falling."

Balenor: "Falling? You mean..."

Village Elder Ka: "Yes, some have already fallen.."
