Prologue: Trial By Fire

Fire. It represents many things to many people and cultures. Some would say it's a purifier, some would say it's just a destroyer, but one person's interpretation of it would make your heart shatter. Death. This perspective is held by a young boy as he slowly trudged through the ruins of the city, all the while carrying another boy on his back.

"Is anybody there?" the young boy spoke with a voice that breathed in the ash and dust of the flames.

The other boy coughs, the young boy tries to shield the child from breathing in the toxic air. "Hello.....Anybody?" the boy cries out hoping for a respite their predicament. Yet all he receives is silence, a cold, painful silence that no one should ever hear.

The boy then proceeds to push onwards through the ruins, hoping in his heart that someone anyone would save them.

After wandering for what felt like years to the boy, he trips over some rubble and falls on the ground, the other boy falls not too far from him, he tries to get back up and shield him from breathing in the air but he lacks the strength to, after his fifth attempt to do so, he calls out into the silent void.

"Help..." The young boy pleaded

"Please...." He begged hoping someone would answer him only for silence to fill the void once more.

"Somebody..." The young boy continued. Again silence.

"Anybody..." Silence.

"Please....help... us..." as soon as he spoke those words it began to rain, to the boy it was as though the world itself was crying in sympathy for them.

The two boys then reached towards the clouds as though they were trying to catch them and comfort them like they were forgiving a child for doing something he never knew was wrong.

"I-I'm sorry..." as the young boy said those words his vision began to blur and both boys hands start to fall.

.

.

.

Suddenly their hands were caught by someone. Looking up, they spot a man wearing a black suit and trench coat, tears rolling down his face as he smiles while tightly holding their hands, as though to never let them go.

The young boy tries to utter a thank you but can't as the world fades to black and he felt the warmth of what he assumes to be the man hugging them as though their lives were a miracle.

-----------------------------

Days after the event the boy woke up in a hospital, scanning his surroundings frantically in a panic he catches sight of the boy he was protecting in a bed right next to him as soon as he sees him he sighs in relief and then proceeds to look around the room with a more focused mindset he sees that both of them are connected to an IV drip, and a heart monitor, and both are bandaged up 'standard medical procedure.' The boy thought to himself. Next he sees what appears to be 2 fresh sets of clothing, one his size and the other set for the other boy from the looks of them.'Who got these?'He wondered. Then he remembers the man from that day. 'Probably that man from back then.' He rationalized. As he was doing so the door to their room opened and the man that saved them walked in along with what the boy could only assume was the doctor that was checking on them while they were unconscious. While they were walking in, The younger boy started to stir,'That's a relief.' The child said to himself. He was then pulled from his thoughts when the man started to speak.

"...Hello." He greeted.

"Hello.." the young boy replied "Thank you for saving us back then."

The younger boy soon woke up and upon seeing what is transpiring sits upright and looks at the man.

"Your welcome." The man replied. "My name is Kiritsugu Emiya." He introduced himself.

"So you are Y/N and Shirou, correct?" He asked. "Correct." Y/N replied. Shirou nodded his head in agreement. Kiritsugu is shocked at the boy's maturity given his age but proceeds nonetheless

"I'll be blunt with the both of you." He continued.

Both Y/N and Shirou looked at Kiritsugu and said nothing.

"What would you two prefer, going to an orphanage, or being adopted and taken in by a complete stranger like myself?" He asked.

The boys looked at each other, blinked twice, then looked back at him with their answer.

--------------------------

The boys and Kiritsugu are seen walking down the hospital's halls, each boy holding a hand as they were going to their new home. Silence was prevalent for a short while but was then broken when the man spoke.

"Right, I forgot to tell you boys something." He started.

The boys looked up at the man in response. "What was it?" Y/N asked, a note of slight confusion prevalent in his voice.

"This one thing I have to tell you right out the gate."

"To tell you the truth...I'm actually a Magus." He stated. When he said this both Y/N and Shirou looked at him in Awe and Wonder and were slightly confused by what he said.

(Time skip Brought to you by Chibi Y/N practicing magecraft)

It's currently nightfall and Kiritsugu and Shirou were sitting and gazing at the moon. Y/N on the other hand was sitting in the yard a beam of moonlight shining over him as he's practicing his mage craft, something in Kiritsugu's heart felt both joy and sadness at the boys determination, the reason why still eluded him.

Every once in a while they would look in Y/N's direction, for Kiritsugu it was to track his progress, in Shirou's case however, it was just to see his adopted brother training, all the while feeling awestruck at Y/N's own willpower.

'After all that's happened to us he still pushes onward....' Shirou contemplated every possible reason why that is but none of the solutions stuck. 'Why does he keep pushing forward?' He questioned. After trying to understand it all,  Shirou decided that there was no reason to further delve into it, there was a purpose, that was more than enough for Shirou to feel at ease about his brother's heart.

After a time passed in silence, Shirou spoke. "...Dad."

"Yes..?" Kiritsugu replied.

"Do you think me and Y/N can Be Protectors of Justice?"

"Hmm..Thats a tough question." Kiritsugu said but Shirou said nothing in response so he proceeded.

"So what you're saying, Shirou. Is that you both want to protect everybody in the world, correct?" He stated.

Shirou nodded his head in agreement to the question.

"Listen, the only people a Protector of Justice can save... are those that the protector himself chooses he must save."

At that both Kiritsugu and Shirou return their attention to the night sky. Y/N soon joining them in their endeavor.
