Chapter Twenty-Eight

Night is falling by the time we make it back to the safe place Ethan had mentioned hours ago. It is a small house standing in the middle of a clearing. Thick trees surround the clearing on all sides, making it nearly impossible for us to walk towards the house, but we trudge forward.

"Shit," I whimper, trying to curl in on myself to stop the pain of the contraction spreading throughout my body, but Erik pulls me back up. Together, my mates help me to walk the last remaining steps onto the porch.

The jangling of keys distracts me from the driving pain, and moments later, the thick wooden door swings open. Erik picks me up into his arms and gently carries me through the front of the house and up a flight of stairs. Ethan is right beside him, whispering soothing words to me while Taylor is giving orders to everyone else.

"W-where are the girls?" I ask once the pain is gone.

Opening my eyes, I see that we are in a large bedroom with a sizeable bed sitting beneath a curtained window. A large pile of baby supplies sits in the left-hand corner next to the closet and a fireplace is to the right of the bed. Micah had managed to escape the arms of the tall blonde beta and is now starting a fire in the fireplace.

"They're fine," Ethan tells me, rubbing the sweaty hair out of my face once Erik gently sets me down on the towels laying on the bed. "We left them here with some toys and Elliot was with them too. Meeka stayed behind to protect them."

"Okay, Liam," Taylor says, walking to the edge of the bed wearing a clean pair of clothes, "you ready to see your baby?"

"Yes, I needed him out of me hours ago," I say with a tired smile. My mates and Taylor chuckle.

"Him?" Erik questions. "How could you possibly know the baby is a boy?"

Turning, I narrow my eyes at him. "Love, how many times do I have to tell you? I have carried this baby for nine months and am about to give birth to it. I think I would know what gender it is going to be."

"They do say mothers have an intuition for knowing the gender before the baby is born," Taylor says, helping me to remove my shirt before gently prodding his fingers along the skin at the bottom of my stomach.

"How much longer?" I ask, feeling another contraction coming on.

It is stronger than all the rest of them, urging me to push, even though there is nowhere for the baby to come out of if I push. My mates sit on either side of me and are holding my hands, offering me as much comfort as they can at the moment. As the pain runs through me and I resist the urge to push, I squeeze their hands as hard as I can and let out a painful cry.

"It looks like it is time," the other omega says.

"Can we help?" a hesitant voice says from the open doorway. "We helped the other pregnant omegas that had passed through the camp."

Turning my head, I see Micah and Allie watching us, both with small smiles on their faces.

"Who's on guard and who is watching the kids?" Ethan asks from my right.

Micah turns to look at him while his sister turns her questioning gaze to Taylor. My friend gives her a quick nod, and she walks over to him, dragging her brother behind.

"Tatum is watching over the kids, while Jesse and Alexis are keeping guard," Micah tells him, stumbling behind his sister.

Taylor gives both of them quiet directions, and they follow them without question. They both quickly change into clean clothes and wash their hands with the hot water over the fireplace before helping me to lay in a comfortable position.

"Taylor, I need to push," I cry, squeezing my mates' hands as hard as I can. I feel bones move under my hard grip, but neither of them says anything.

"Don't push, Liam. Remember, don't move while I am making the cut. I don't want to accidentally cut the baby. It will be quick so that your body doesn't have time to heal before we get the baby out." He grabs a scalpel before turning his brown eyes to meet my blue ones. "Are you ready?"

I giving him a shaky nod. "Okay. I am making the incision in three, two, one." As soon as he reaches one, I feel the knife piercing the thin layer of skin along the bottom of my stomach. It hurts like hell, but I manage to stay still.

"You're doing good, Liam, I see the baby," Taylor says. Not moving his gaze from the incision, he tells the other omegas to get ready.

With that, Micah grabs a towel that had been placed in front of the fire place in order to warm it up while Allie starts to disinfect a needle and thread.

"Oh shit, it hurts," I whimper, gritting my teeth through the pain.

"You're doing great, love," Erik tells me, pressing a soft kiss to my sweaty forehead.

"Just a little bit longer and then we will see the baby," Ethan says, petting my hair out of my face.

I try to give them a grateful smile, but the pain is too much. It ends up turning into more of a grimace.

"Ah, here we are," Taylor murmurs, and not a second later, I feel the pressure of something being pulled out of me. "Here is baby."

A small cry breaks the quiet of the room. Lifting my head, I see Taylor hand the small bundle to Micah before turning back to my stomach to take out the afterbirth. The pain of being stitched up is on the back of my mind as my gaze is stuck on the small, crying bundle being gently wiped off by Micah. Ethan stays by my side, but Erik stands up and silently walks over to our baby.

"All right, my friend, we are all done down here," Taylor tells me, but I do not break my gaze from the baby.

I hear Taylor and Allie quietly chuckle. The towels are moved out from under me, and somehow, I am guessing with the help of Ethan, the blankets are pulled from under me, and then are covering me.

"Can I see him?" I say to Micah.

He throws me a smile and a nod over his shoulder as he wraps the small baby up in a clean blanket and hands him to Erik. A look of absolute awe spreads across my mate's face as he slowly makes his way over to us, eyes not moving from the baby's face.

Tiredly, I smile as Erik carefully lays the baby down in my arms. Gently, I run a finger over the dark wispy hair on top of my baby's head and smile as big blue eyes blink up at me before falling closed. Pale white skin tinged with the pinkness of being born stands in stark contrast against the lavender colored blanket

"A son?" I whisper.

Both of my mates are pressed against my side, neither looking away from the small baby laying in my arms.

"Yeah, a son. You were right, love," Erik tells me, placing a kiss on my forehead. Quietly, the other omegas leave the room, closing the wooden door behind them.

"He's so perfect," I say, adjusting him so that he is lying more comfortably on my chest.

The movement causes the baby to let out a soft cry and his little eyes blink open. Turning his head, he starts nuzzling at my chest and becomes more frustrated when he does not immediately find what he wants.

"We're going to check the perimeter with the betas and then we will be right back," Erik tells me in a quiet voice.

He must see my embarrassment of being able to nurse and gives me a quick kiss before grabbing his brother and leaving me and the baby alone.

Leaning back against the headboard, I slip off the baggy shirt Ethan had put on me and pull the baby closer. His cries grow louder, but as soon as I rub my nipple against his bottom lip, he opens his tiny mouth and latches on. Luckily, I had gained some weight during the pregnancy, making it easier for him to stay latched.

"Hi baby," I whisper, rubbing a finger over his hair and down his soft cheek. He does not seem to mind and raises his eyes to mine. "You are so handsome already."

His little hand moves to rest above his mouth and I glide my finger down his pale arm all the way to his tiny fingers. As soon as my finger touches his, he grabs onto mine with a tight grip, as if fearing that I might try to move.

"What shall I name you, little love?"

His eyelids start to close as he eats, but he fights to keep them open. Bending down, I kiss the tiny hand wrapped around my finger, causing his eyes to move to mine once again.

"How about Lucas?" His tiny nose scrunches up, and I gently shake my head. "No? Well, I didn't like it too much, either. Your daddies both did, though."

"You look like a Matthew to me. You'll be my little Matty," I say smiling down at him. His fingers squeeze mine, and I take that as an affirmation. "Matthew James Seren."

We sit in silence for a couple minutes, my eyes never stray from his face. The quiet swallowing coming from Matty and the crackling of the fire in the fireplace are the only noises in the room.

"Your grandfather's name was James. He was very strong, the alpha of our pack. Your grandmother, now she was the strongest wolf I knew. If you were a girl, I would have named you after her. You would have been Maria Elizabeth Seren."

Matty lets out a little grunt before unlatching. His little face scrunches up and seeing that he is about to cry, I grab the pacifier laying on the nightstand and gently push it between his pink lips. Immediately, he starts sucking on it and he stares up at me. Deciding that I do not want to risk an accident, I put on the small diaper that was sitting next to the pacifier. Matty does not seem to mind me putting a diaper on him.

Carefully, I scoot down on the bed so that I am only partially sitting up. Placing one hand under Matty's butt and the other over his back, I pull him closer to me. His head rests on my chest and his legs are scrunched up beneath his stomach, his arms lying next to his head. I pat his little back, pulling out his pacifier until he lets out a couple of small burps. With that, I am finally able to relax into the bed.

"How about some sleep, hm? I think we both need it," I whisper.

His blanket is still partially over him, but I readjust it so that it is covering everything but his head. He rhythmically sucks on the pacifier and taking a closer look, I see that it is a tan color with a little purple elephant on it.

"My perfect baby," I whisper, pulling the bed comforter over the both of us. His eyelids finally begin to close as I lightly rub his back. "Sleepy time for the both of us, little love."

Closing my eyes, I relax back into the comfortable bed, happy to finally be someplace safe with my family and pack.
